Old Governor’s Mansion, located at120 South Clarke Street, c. 1839. Built as theExecutive Mansion, it was home to thegovernors of Georgia from 1839 to 1868. Itwas occupied by General Sherman during hisMarch to the Sea. The Mansion is one of themost perfect examples of Greek Revivalarchitecture in Georgia and also received theprestigious Georgia Trust for HistoricPreservation award. Lockerly Arboretum, located at 1534Irwinton Hwy. Founded in 1965, theArboretum includes approximately forty-sevenacres that feature shrubs, trees, herb beds, iris,daylily beds, rhododendron garden, vineyards,bulb and perennial beds. There is also atropical and desert greenhouse. Lockerly Hall, located at 1534 IrwintonHwy, c. 1839. Lockerly Hall, a Greek Revivalhome, is the centerpiece of Lockerly Arboretumand presides over its surroundings withelegance and grace. The mansion is asignificant example of the finest plantationarchitecture of the Milledgeville area, as well asthe entire cotton belt of the Old South.Lockerly Hall is available for touring as partof the Monday–Wednesday Trolley Tour. Old Capitol, located at 201 East GreeneStreet, c. 1807. The Old Capitol is consideredthe first example of Gothic architecture in apublic building in the United States. It servedas the seat of government for the State ofGeorgia from 1807 to 1868, and in itslegislative chambers the Secession Conventionwas held in 1861. The building underwent a$10 million renovation in 2000. Since 1879,Georgia Military College has occupied thehistoric site. www.gmc.cc.ga.us

AttractionsBrown-Stetson-Sanford House, located at 601 West Hancock Street, c. 1825. This house has a beautiful Palladian double portico andoriginal pilasters. Fanlights have a spread eagleand dogwood blossoms ornamenting the leaddividers. A cantilevered, oval, spiral staircasedominates the central hall and hand-grainedwoodwork remains in the parlor. St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church,located at 220 South Wayne Street, c. 1841,consecrated in 1843. A Gothic roof nowreplaces the original flat roof destroyed by theexplosion of the nearby arsenal during theCivil War. Of special interest is the chancelwindow of Old English glass, a gift fromChrist Church in Savannah. The hand carvedchancel furniture was created by an earlyparishioner, Captain John Wilcox. John Marlor Art Center, located at 201North Wayne Street, c. 1830. This facility isone of three historic buildings that make up theAllied Arts Center. This area was once known as“The Strip” which was the heart of the African-American district until the 1980’s. It nowhouses arts offices and the Marlor Art Gallery.The Allen’s Market Building, across from theJohn Marlor Art Center, is a 1911 building thathas been adapted into a theatre, meeting andstudio space. Bartram Forest, located at 2892 Hwy 441S. In 1794, the Bartram Forest was inhabitedby Native Americans. Today, educationalhiking trails allow visitors to see centuries ofabundant wildlife, natural wetlands, and anerosion ravine with soil that is remnant of theancient shallow seas that covered Georgia 50 to100 million years ago. Andalusia, located on Hwy 441 N. Thispicturesque farm is where American authorFlannery O’Connor found the source of manyof the settings, situations and fictionalcharacters that are the signature of her stories.The 544-acre estate consists of the MainHouse (Andalusia), the Hill House (home tothe farm workers), several barns, a water towerand additional structures. 478-454-4029 orvisit the website at www.andalusiafarm.org.

Lake Sinclair, located on Hwy. 441 N.,encompasses 15,300 acres for fishing, skiing,swimming, boating, camping, fishingtournaments and has several marinas for theconvenience of visitors.
