As the wintermonths drag on, cabinfever sets in for manypeople. However, beingcooped up inside is evenharder for people suffer-ing from asthma and al-lergies because moretime indoors meansgreater exposure to in-door allergens.
Although mold, pet dander and dustmites are often blamedfor sneezing and itchyeyes this time of year, the National Pest Man-agement Association(NPMA) warns that win-ter pests such as cock-roaches and rodents can
also be common asthmaand allergy triggers.
"The saliva, urine and fecal droppingsfrom cockroaches androdents contain allergenproteins known to elicitallergic reactions andasthma attacks," said Dr.Jorge Parada, medicaladvisor for the NPMA.
"During the win-ter months, cockroachesand rodents seek shelterfrom the elements insidehomes, thereby increas-ing allergic reactionsamong those people whosuffer from allergies andasthma."
According to theAsthma and AllergyFoundation of America
(AAFA), cockroach aller-gens are present in 63percent of Americanhomes, and mouse aller-gens in 82 percent. Moreover, the number ofhomes containing cock-roach allergens in-creases to as many as78 to 98 percent in urbanareas.
"It's important fora person suffering fromallergy or asthma symp-toms to see his or herdoctor. A medical profes-sional will be able to testfor a cockroach allergy,as well as other commonallergens," Parada ad-vised.
"Although thereis no cure for asthma,
asthma can be controlledthrough medical treat-ment and managementof environmental trig-gers. A doctor may rec-ommend the use ofantihistamines and de-congestant medicationsto manage symptoms, and may also prescribean anti-inflammatorymedication and bron-chodilators."
The NPMA rec-ommends the followingtips to help keep allergy-causing pests out:
*Seal cracks andholes around the outsideof the home, includingutility pipes.
*Properly venti-late basements and
crawl spaces to preventmoisturebuildup.
*Keepcountersfree ofcrumbs,and vac-uum floorsoften to re-duce theaccumula-tion of al-lergens.
*Keep garbagein a sealed container, and dispose of it regu-larly.
*Pay extra atten-tion to kitchens and bath-rooms -- especially underappliances and sinks --
as these areas are par-
ticularly vulnerable tocockroach infestations.

Winter comeswith a unique set ofchallenges, includinglower air temperatures, lack of visibility, fewerdaylight hours, fallingsnow and, of course, icyroads.
These can cer-tainly make for somehazardous driving condi-tions, which is why ex-perts say you should digout your ice scraper, gloves and snow shov-els before hitting theroad.
"Don't set offlike a tank commanderwith a tiny hole cleared,"says Andy Smith, a pa-trolman in Canada. Thesafest way to preparefor winter driving is to beproactive before anemergency occurs.
The followingtips will give you someideas on how to drivesafely all winter long:
*Surface Condi-tions. Roads anddrive paths are likelyto be covered withrain, sleet, snow andice, which causesslippery driving con-ditions and reducestire traction.
Considerusing snow tires inareas where winterweather is severe. It's also important toinspect your tires foruneven wear, cup-ping and propertread depth. Alsoconsider the lasttime you had thetires rotated, bal-anced and aligned.
*EmergencySituations. Winter
weather increases thechance of getting into acar accident. Pack anemergency kit to leavein your vehicle at alltimes. Con-sider including safetyitems such as flares, medical supplies, jumper cables, a flashlight, batteries, a smallshovel and tire chains. Also consider comfortitems like blankets, gloves and snacks.
*Clear Vision.Snow, ice and fog dimin-ish your visibility, creat-ing dangerous drivingconditions. Remove alldebris from your wind-shield, windows and out-side mirrors beforedriving. Replace yourwiper blades with ex-treme-weather bladesfor a stronger wipe tobattle heavy rain, snowand ice buildup. TheTRICO Ice wiper blade(www.tricoproducts.com)is designed to distributeeven pressure for a
clearer wipe, while thecontour complementsnew vehicle models andmaximizes your line ofsight.
*Vehicle Per-formance. Follow therecommended mainte-nance schedule in yourvehicle's owner's man-ual to avoid hard starts, stalling and lost powerduring colder weather.Keep your gas tankabove the halfway markbecause empty tankscollect condensation, which damages the en-gine.
Some regionsexperience heavy snowand dangerous icestorms, others find anincrease in rainy condi-tions, and in someplaces, temperaturesmay just cool down a bit.Regardless of location, the winter season bringsa climate change that alldrivers should consider.

‘Tis the seasonfor baking cookies. Togive you a hand, hereare some easy tips forstellar cookies and aperfect iced cookie thatSanta and his elves willlove.
•Use self-risingflour, which includes theleavening and salt in thecorrect proportions.
•Use a drymeasuring cup (plasticor metal with straightsides) for measuring theflour. You could end upwith too much flour ifyou use a liquid measur-ing cup (often glass orplastic, with slopingsides and a spout).
•Make sure youringredients are roomtemperature
•Don’t “fluff” thecreamed butter andsugar. This adds toomuch air to the dough.Beat just until smooth.
•Don’t overbeatthe dough once the flouris added. Beat just untilthe flour is incorporatedinto the mixture.
•For extra riseand body, refrigerate thedough until chilled be-fore scooping onto bak-ing sheets.
•Use an insu-lated baking sheet.
•Use a small ormedium scoop to meas-ure out the dough.
•Don’t cramextra cookies on thebaking sheet. Eachstandard size panshould hold about adozen. Aim for 2 inchesof space between cook-
ies.•Remove cook-
ies from the oven justbefore they look done. Alight tan cookie is morepliable than a goldenone.
•A metal cakespatula is better than asticky rubber one for re-moving cookies from thepan.
•Let cookiescool completely beforestoring in an airtight con-tainer.
