Casa BatlCasa Batlló

Antoni Gaudí was a Catalan architect known for his colorful work influenced by nature.

He designed and built Casa Batlló around an existing building in 1904. The building looks completely in Gaudí’s specific style because he redesigned the entire facade (face of the building). The Casa Batlló was used as a house for many years and today is a cultural center and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Taipei Performing Arts CenterTaipei Performing Arts Center

OMA designed the Taipei Performing Arts Center to embrace the experimental aspects in traditional theatre. The building has three independent theaters!

OMA is the design studio lead by Rem Koolhaas.

Walt Disney Concert HallWalt Disney Concert Hall

This iconic building designed by Frank Gehry is home to Los Angeles’ Philharmonic. The Walt Disney Concert Hall was completed in 2003. During the design process Frank Gehry worked with musicians and acousticians (sound scientists) to make sure the orchestra would sound beautiful in the building. The outside is designed to look like musical movement.

Frank Gehry is one of today’s most succesful architects. He designs with paper, folds, and sketches.

The GherkinThe Gherkin

The Gherkin was designed by Foster and Partners to encourage a connection between nature and work. The building is circular and environmentally friendly. The way the triangles swirl around the building mean the floors don’t need columns to stand, making it very open.

Foster and Partners was started by Norman Foster, a famous English architect known for modern sustainable buildings.

Ieoh Ming Pei was selected to design this building when he was very young by the former first lady of the USA in 1964. The building was completed in 1979. The design was meant to be contemporary and timeless like the President it was named after.

I.M. Pei was born in Canton, China and moved to the USA to become an architect at 18 years old.

Oscar Niemeyer Cultural CenterOscar Niemeyer Cultural Center

The Oscar Niemeyer Cultural Center was opened in 2011 in Aviles, Spain. The large open space around the buildings is meant to show that the center is open to all people. The Center is colorful and curved inspired by the Dutch Neoplastic architects. The Center helped the town get more attention and tourism.

Oscar Niemeyer was a Brazilian architect famous for flowing curves in his work.

Villa SavoyeVilla Savoye

Villa Savoye is a modernist home, designed by Le Corbusier. It was built in 1931 using reinforced concrete. Le Corbusier was inspired by machinery and how people and machines lived together. This was one of the first houses to embrace the idea of industry and the home.

Le Corbusier is considered one of the first leaders of Modernism. His real name was Charles-Édouard Jeanneret.

Heydar Aliyev CenterHeydar Aliyev Center

The Heydar Aliyev Center was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects to contrast the generally rigid and angular architecture in Azerbaijan. It was commissioned a few years after the nation won its independence, and was designed as a symbol of the future.

Zaha Hadid Architects was founded by Zaha Hadid, a British-Iraqi architect. She was the first woman to win the very important Pritzker Prize.

New MuseumNew Museum

The New Museum building is designed to look like a playful stack of cubes. The stacked effect is inspired by the buildings and city blocks surrounding it in New York’s Lower Manhattan. The natural light makes it seem airy and modern.

SANAA is led by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, two Japanese architects.

Theme BuildingTheme Building

The Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport was designed post-World War Two to serve as the central hub of the airport. The futuristic design was important about looking to the future and seeing air travel become popular and take off.

Pereira + Luckman is credited with the design of the building and was worked on by the ground-breaking African American architect Paul Revere Williams.
