Bless this house‘BLESS This House With Love And Laughter’, what a positive, old-fashioned blessing. These ‘motto’ art forms are enjoying a revival from their slumber as mainstays of apple-pie America. This particular one is very popular as it is made

with good quality mirror glass with a distressed imprint. Measuring 19” x 14” it is ideal for many places within the home but probably best as a greeting on entering. It would add a nice touch to a hallway or would make a

lovely wedding present for a couple starting out in a new home.

Pippa inspired dressesTHE bridesmaid dress that had everyone talking at Kate and William’s Royal Wedding is the inspiration for a new limited edition dress coming to Debenhams. For those that want to buy one when they arrive in store, Debenhams have created a special ‘Lady-in-waiting-list’ for fans of the dress to reserve their very own version.Pippa Middleton’s iconic figure-hugging bridesmaid gown reportedly cost £20,000 but Debenhams’ High Street version is a right royal

bargain at just €225. Hurrah! If white isn’t your colour, they’ve also created a version of  Pippa’s emerald green evening gown as worn to the evening reception. It could be yours this Autumn for just €149. Send your details to [email protected].

Just for the KrillIF you are in need of some Omega 3 in your diet you couldn’t do much better that Cleanmarine Krill Oil. It provides essential sports performance

and recovery nutrition for people with active lifestyles of any level or age plus those in need of extra physical and mental edge. Krill are the little shrimp-like marine crustaceans that wild Alaskan salmon feed off of so you are getting your Omega 3 from source.Cleanmarine Krill Oil is deemed to be better than fish oil as it is easier absorbed, is reputed to be more effective, you do not experience fishy burps while taking it and it is sustainably fished.Just €19.99 for 60 capsules from The Good Earth.

Snug as a bugWITH another freezing winter on the way there are plenty of options to help keep your dog warm and toasty during the worst of it. If your pooch refuses to wear a dog coat then why not consider investing in a warm woolly jumper. This wonderful jumper will keep your pup snug as a bug! The jumper has a turtle neck with cable detailing ensuring they will be the most stylish canine around. Most importantly it’s soft so your pet will love it as it will feel just like another layer of fur. They are available in most pet shops but the one pictured here is from www.puchipetwear.com.

Girls Day Out

IF you missed out on having a holiday this year there’s still time to treat yourself. The ‘Ultimate Girls Day Out’ is taking place in the RDS, Dublin this coming weekend

and promises to be bigger, better and more glamorous than before. There will be over 100 exhibitors including H&M, House of Fraser, Marks & Spencer, Harvey Nichols and Debenhams so you can enjoy browsing and picking up some bargains. There will also be a chic beauty zone, smart girls zone, there will be experts offering practical advice on beauty, hair and fashion, workshops, interactive shows, spas, jewellery, perfume, handbags galore, makeovers, flash sales and lots of competitions. Write in styleIF you are heading back to school or college or just back to the office after your holidays it’s always nice to stock up on a few new supplies. This boxed set of pencils from Orla Kiely is gorgeous and will fit perfectly in your handbag if you like to jot down ideas, sketch on the go, or tick things off your shopping list in the supermarket.

The solid box which features the classic multi stem design on the front and back, contains six pencils, each with a cream eraser at the end. The pencils come in three different designs - multi stem, brown linear stem and red cross hatch stem print and so all six pencils provide an ideal match to the Orla Kiely notebooks.

Berried treasureA RANGE of products by lip and eye make-up specialists ‘Lord & Berry’ is now being sold at O’Connell’s Pharmacy on High Street. One of their best products has to be the ‘Ultimate Touch Eraser Pencil’. How many times have you tried to put on liquid eye-liner before a night out and ruined it with an unsteady hand or applied just a bit too much lipliner. This little miracle worker will magically erase mistakes leaving the rest of your make-up intact. Also check out their chunky lipstick pencils that not only come in very wearable shades but are also a doddle to apply.

And there’s more . . .

Gig of the week

KILKENNY band ‘Saturn’s Virtue’ play their debut gig in Cleere’s Theatre this coming Friday. The four-piece progressive rock band formed in late in 2010 when like minded musicians from two different bands found they had a lot of the same interests in music. They started to push it as far as it would take them and found their varied

styles came together in a flood of emotional and rhythmic intensity.Their writing often takes a contemporary approach to rhythm and song structure with use of compound time and phrasing. Their songs can sound complex at times but when it all comes together there is a resounding simplicity of melody that anyone can identify with. The careful

blend of effects help aid the transition of their instruments into subtle textures and alternate voices. This gives their songs more depth and clarity. Have a listen to some of their tracks at http://www.reverbnation.com/saturnsvirtue. Support on the night is by Sticky Digit. Doors 9.30pm. 7 EXPANSE, an exhibition by Martina O’Brien, runs in the Watergate Theatre, Upstairs Gallery until September 16. Her work is made up of layers of paint and mixed media and there is a contradiction between the actual and the inner which is emphasized by the three-dimensions that this layering produces. The internal landscape - beneath the skin and within the psyche, is the artist’s inspiration. Light from the outside world refracts through a

mosaic of experiences, paints fractals of light and colour, patterns within.

Darkness, its counterpoint, has its place within providing weight and substance. Its hues echo the recessive, retrograde and painful - allowing a more nuanced experience. The internal landscape is never simply a reflection of what is seen, never a reproduction of the world as is. Rather, it is how we organise our experiences and sensations, and how we choose to engage in the world as we understand it; it is what defines us.

KENYA, Ethiopia and Somalia are facing the worst drought in 60 years. Almost 12 million people are at risk and parts of Southern Somalia have already been declared a famine. Livestock, the pastoralists only source of income, are weak and dying – even the camels. During their long journeys to get to camps, some refugees – particularly children – are dying from the effects of malnutrition. Alarmingly we have not yet reached the hunger season –

the next rains are not expected until October. East Africa’s humanitarian crisis is at the tipping point. The numbers of people affected throughout East Africa is equivalent to twice the population of Ireland. New figures show that over half a million are at risk of starvation.Families urgently need food, water and emergency aid. You can help provide it via www.oxfamireland.org, by visiting your local Oxfam shop, by calling 1850 304055 or by texting GIVE to 51500.

FILM Cowboys and AliensDirector: Jon Favreau

This film must have the best title in years. Your head nearly explodes in excitement when you hear that both Han Solo and

James Bond are in it too. Sad to report that they forgot to write a decent script after they did their naming and casting in the board room.An unknown man (Daniel Craig) arrives into an outpost in Wild West with a strange manacle on his arm. He soon becomes embroiled in a feud with local patriarch Harrison Ford but then suddenly- aliens attack. So they round up a posse and go to kill the ‘demons’ - Craig’s arm being the only thing that can stop them. His manacle now shoots lasers for some unknown reason.I would spoil this film if I could but unfortunately that is kind of about it. The back story of any movie usually reveals itself over the course of the action. The script however is simply not arsed in telling you about how Craig got that silly thing on his arm. The question which kept bugging me throughout was- if he had been abducted by aliens why didn’t they just probe him as per usual rather than give him a weapon that can destroy them? This is never answered. You would think the 10 writers who slung this crap together might have spotted

that. The same amount of monkeys on typewriters would have.It is such a shame that this plot hole sucks any logic into outer space since for the first half an hour or so this is a pretty decent Western. However I think when the aliens come into play it really loses it. Jon Favreau the director plays things far too straight when the ridiculousness of the scenario deserved a few pithy one-liners from Ford or Craig. You long for that lightness of touch which he brought to the first ‘Iron Man’ and his witty debut ‘Swingers’. Spielberg produced this and Favreau tries a bit too hard to ape the master’s more boring films. The casting is probably where he went wrong too- though Craig does his best with a nothing character but he is more of a brute than a minimalist like Clint Eastwood who he is mimicking. It was not only squinting and spitting that made ‘The Man with No Name’ so compelling. There was a world of subtlety in those tiny glances Clint gave which ‘James Bond’ can never achieve. Harrison Ford simply does the cranky schtick he has been doing for the last dozen or so films he made that no-one cared about. You worry that this ex-carpenter is turning into the wood he used to tend.So a great concept is thrown away with an overly serious approach and bad scripting. People always say that children will love this kind of drivel. Kids loved ‘Transformers 3”. Don’t listen to them. Go see ‘The Inbetweeners’ movie instead. - DARRAGH BYRNE
