builders reGaiNiNG positive attitude for the buildiNG iNdustryJanuary’s report was influenced by better-than-normal weather. Builders are feeling positive about the housing market after the validation was made on the number of starts and permits in January. The numbers are rising according to the data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Us Department of Housing and Urban Development. Housing starts overall were up 1.5% from December and a 9.9% jump from a year ago. While single family starts were 1.0% lower on a monthly basis, that drop comes from the heels of a 12.0% jump in December. Multifamily starts were up 8.5%. Part of the exciting improvement can be attributed to great weather. Last month was the fourth warmest January on record since 1985 and the driest. While the weather may be promoting the numbers now the building industry should expect some pay back in March and April. Let’s keep these numbers soaring up by working diligently while the weather permits. 2012 looks as if it could be the year to send the building industry into a positive, profitable leap.

benefits of manufactured stone is topic of february luncheonBy lee Grace, Classified Writer

Pat Holland of Coronado Products spoke about the benefits of manufactured stone for home exteriors and interiors to the February general membership meeting of the North Texas Home Builders Association on Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Kemp Center for the Arts. Holland, along with Mary Tondu, answered questions about Coronado Stone Products, one of the leaders in the manufactured stone industry that - in recent years - has grown from a $200 million per year industry to a $1 billion per year industry. Holland said manufactured stone is a very cost-effective product, saving builders thousands of dollars when compared with natural stone. It is available in a variety of styles, shapes and colors. Manufactured stone is basically a veneer system with multiple applications. Mr. Holland also said it dries naturally from the inside out. Manufactured stone is made from cement, pumice and natural iron oxides to produce a lightweight concrete product that has the appearance of natural stone. In other business, Noel Filer of the Partners With Youth Campaign at the Bill Bartley Family YMCA accepted a check for $280 from the North Texas Home Builders Association. These proceeds were raised from January’s gift basket raffle that was sponsored by Jay Bitsche of Door Systems of Wichita Falls. The proceeds from the February gift basket drawing sponsored by Sharon Tucker of Atmos Energy will benefit Christmas in Action. Johnny McClane of The Ember Shop was the winner of the February gift basket.

Our many years of experience with large commercial jobs quali-fy us as the go-to company for your concrete needs. We will be happy to consult with you on all your job requirements and quote very competitive prices.

charles barr homesI have been working in the construction business since 1967. I was serving as a full time policeman with the City of Wich-ita Falls Police Department and began framing homes with other policemen as a result of the tornado that demolished the City View area of Wichita Falls. I continued to work both jobs until 1972 when I left the police department and be-gan my own home building company. I joined the North Texas Home Builders Association and became a supporter of all their endeavors as a community organization. When I served the association as President the first time, I was in-strumental in helping my fellow members acquire the pres-ent location and build our present-day office. Later we expanded our building to its present size. I have served as President four times and have supported all projects that involved the Home Builders Association, including Toys for Tots, Adopted Squadron at SAFB, Company Picnics for our families and friends, furnished and delivered a truckload of clothing and furniture to flood victims in Louisiana, built and donated several large play houses to Child Advocates, the Salvation Army and the Wichita Falls Junior League. During the years since 1972 I have developed several subdivisions and built numerous single and multi-family homes along with small commercial projects plus expansions and remodels for several churches. For pleasure I enjoy traveling with my wife and family as well as building furniture and other special items in my workshop for my family.

‘Green’ Your Home Well Beyond St. Patrick’s DayIn March, many Americans celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by attending parties, wearing green clothing, and even bedecking their homes with green shamrock and leprechaun-adorned decorations. With nearly 37 million Americans claiming Irish ancestry (according to Ancestry.com), that’s no surprise. But what may surprise you are the many ways that you can “green” your home that will last well beyond March 17, and save you money on utility bills year-round.

Here are a few recommendations to home owners who want to increase their home’s efficiency, decrease costs, and take advantage of the other benefits of “greening” your home.

add iNsulatioN Adding insulation will help save energy costs, increase comfort by better controlling temperature, and improve indoor air quality by eliminating many gaps dirt, dust, and other impurities can enter. Insulation is rated by its ability to resist heat flow, known as the “R-value.” the higher the R-value, the better its ability to resist heat flow.

iNstall hiGh-efficieNcy WiNdoWsOrdinary window glass transmits ultraviolet heat rays from the sun into your home. ENERGY STAR-rated windows can help control this. These windows may have two or more panes of glass, warm-edge spacers between the panes, improved framing materials, and microscopically thin metal or metallic oxide layers deposited on windows to reduce radiative heat flow.

seal exterior peNetratioNsInspect your home from the inside and outside and plug cracks or openings in order to reduce cold air drafts and heat loss, especially the areas where window frames meet the structure or siding of the house. Use caulking to seal all small cracks on non-moving surfaces and install weather stripping on windows, doors and other movable parts of the home.

replace your appliaNces With eNerGy star-rated oNesENERGY STAR -rated appliances, ranging from dishwashers and refrigerators to computers and televisions, meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy. Qualified refrigerators, dishwashers and vent fans use ten to 50 percent less energy and water than standard models, more than making up for the slightly higher costs of these products.

iNstall loW-floW Water plumbiNG fixturesIn the average home, flushing toilets accounts for around 30 percent of water usage. By using low-flow plumbing fixtures such as toilets, faucet aerators and showerheads, you can save up to 25 percent of that water compared to conventional fixtures while providing the same utility.

upGrade to aN eNerGy star-rated or taNkless Water heaterTankless water heaters provide hot water on demand at a preset temperature rather than storing it. A low-cost alternative to a tankless heater is to wrap insulation around your conventional water heater, which can reduce standby heat losses 25 to 45 percent.

iNstall a hiGh-efficieNcy hvac system High-efficiency ENERGY STAR HvAC equipment can reduce utilities costs on average by ten to 30 percent over minimum efficiency equipment. It also can improve home comfort with more heating and cooling and a quieter operation, and often features higher quality components that result in longer equipment life.

Not only will green remodeling help you enjoy your home more during the time you live in it, it will make it more attractive to potential buyers when you decide to sell. According to research by the National Association of Home Builders, 72 percent of consumers report energy efficient features in a home would influence their purchase decision.

For more information on green remodeling visit www.nthba.com and click on either the Builder – Developers tab or the Associate tab for a list of

Professionals who can help you with any of these improvements.
