F - Engine coolant temperaturegauge and maximum temperaturewarning light (fig. 87)

This shows the temperature of the en-gine coolant fluid and begins when thefluid temperature exceeds about 50C.

The pointer should normally be towardsthe middle of the scale. If the pointerreaches the higher temperature valuesthe request for vehicle performanceshould be decreased.

The illumination of this warning light in-dicates an excessive temperature of theengine cooling fluid. In this case, stop thecar and contact Alfa Romeo Authorized

    Services.

IMPORTANT The temperature of theengine coolant may rise towards the maxi-mum values by obstruction or dirt on theouter part of the engine cooling radiator.

In this case you are advised to inspectand remove any obstructions and have

the outside of the radiator washed assoon as possible.

    G - The warning lights

IMPORTANT The presence of thewarning lights may vary depending onthe type of engine and trim level.

    Insufficient brake fluidand/or handbrake on

This warning light stays on for about 15seconds, after the end of the check, when the level of the brake fluid falls be-low the minimum, possibly due to a leak-age in the system and when the hand-brake is engaged.

When the ignition key is turned toMAR the warning light comes on butmust go out after approx. 6 seconds.

    x

If the warning lightcomes on while driving

    Air bag malfunction

When the ignition key is turned to theMAR position the warning light willcome on and should go out as afterabout. 4 seconds.

This warning light will come on perma-nently when an anomaly affecting the Airbag system is detected.

Insufficient oil pressureThis warning light should be out when

    the engine is running.

When the ignition key is turned to the

MAR position the warning light comeson and should go out as soon as the en-gine is started.

    v

If the warning lightcomes on when the ve-hicle is in movement,

switch the engine off immediate-ly and contact Alfa Romeo Au-thorized Services.

    v

    Low engine oil level

This warning light stays on for approx.15 seconds, after the check, when theengine oil level is low.

With the ignition key atMAR, pressingthe check button, the warning light turnson but must go out after approx. 6 sec-onds.

The oil level is checked only pressingthe check button with the enginestopped. If the engine is started duringthe check, the check procedure is inter-rupted.

    k

If the warning lightstays on after thecheck, do not try to get

peak performance out of the en-gine and top up the oil as soonas possible.

    k

If the warning lightdoes not turn on when

turning the ignition key to MAR orif it stays on when travelling, thiscould indicate a failure in safety re-taining systems; under this condi-tion air bags or pretensioners couldnot trigger in the event of collisionor, in a restricted number of cases, they could trigger accidentally.Stop the car and contact Alfa

Romeo Authorized Services tohave the system checked immedi-ately.

    Low battery charge

This warning light should be out when theengine is running (a slight delay is permittedwhen the engine is running at idle speed).

If the warning light comes on, AlfaRomeo Authorized services should be con-tacted immediately.

When the ignition key is moved to theMAR position the warning light comeson and should go out as soon as the en-gine is started.

    wBrake pad wear

This warning light comes on when thebrake pedal is pressed and the frontbrake pads are found to be worn, havethem replaced as soon as possible. Whenthe ignition key is turned to MAR thewarning light comes on but must go outafter approx. 6 seconds.

IMPORTANT As the vehicle is fittedwith brake pad wear sensors for the frontwheels only, when these are replacedcheck the back brake pads at the sametime.

    d

    Seat belts not fastened

When the ignition key is turned toMAR the warning light turns on but itmust go out after approx. 15 seconds.

For versions/markets where applicable, the warning light turns on permanently

when, with the key in the MAR posi-tion, the drivers seat belt is not fastenedproperly.

Presence of waterin the fuel oil filter(JTD and JTD 20V Multijetversions)

When the ignition key is turned to theMAR position the warning light should

come on and must go out after approx. 4seconds.

The warning light switches on fixedwhen driving, to indicate the presence ofwater in the fuel oil filter.

In case the indicator light switches on,even if just for a few seconds, we recom-mend to contact an Alfa Romeo Autho-rised Service as soon as possible in order

to purge the water from the fuel oil filterand avoid severe damages to the injec-tion pump and to the fuel oil supply cir-cuit as well as the engine irregular opera-tion.

    cGlowplugs(JTD and JTD 20V Multijetversions)

The warning light comes on when theignition key is turned to MAR position. When the glowplugs have reached the

established temperature the warninglight will go out. Start the engine assoon as the warning light has gone out.

For versions/markets where applica-ble, the warning light flashes for approx.30 seconds after starting the enginemeaning that there is a fault to the glowplug warning system, in which case, contact Alfa Romeo Authorized Services.

With a high ambient temperature thewarning light may turn on imperceptibly.

    m

The car is fitted with anelectronic braking device

(EDB). If the> andx warninglights turn on at the same time, thismeans that there is an EBD systemfault; in this case violent brakingmay be accompanied by early rearwheel locking, with the possibility

of skidding. Drive the car ex-tremely carefully to the nearestAuthorized Alfa Romeo workshopto have the system checked.

control lever is moved upwards or, togeth-er with the left-hand warning light, whenthe hazard warning lights are switchedon.

    E

    Lights failure

The warning light stays on for about15 seconds, after the check, when a fail-ure is detected on one of the followinglights:

low beam headlights high beam headlights flashing (only gas discharge headlights) side/taillights direction indicators brake lights (stop lights) third stop light rear fog guards

number plate lights. The warning of a fault may mean one

or more blown bulb, a burnt fuse or cutoff connection.

Turning the key to MAR the warninglight turns on, but it should go out afterabout 5 seconds.

The turning on of onlythe>warning light with

the engine running normally indi-cates a fault to the ABS systemonly. In this case the braking sys-

tem is still efficient, though with-out the aid of the anti-lock device.Under these conditions perfor-mance of the EBD system may bereduced. in this case too, you areadvised to go immediately to thenearest Authorized Alfa Romeoworkshop, driving in such a wayas to avoid sharp braking, to have

    the system checked over.

Turning the ignition key to MAR, thewarning light on the instrument clusterlights up and must go out after about 4seconds.

If the warning light does not go out or s-tays on when travelling, contact Autho-rised Alfa Romeo Services. Although the

absence of the VDC function does not af-fect the car safety, it is however recom-mended to drive at moderate speed.

Flashing of the warning light when travel-ling means that the VDC system has cut in.

    1Electronic automaticgearbox (optional for

    versions markets whereapplicable)

This warning light stays on for about 15seconds, after the check, for an automat-

ic gearbox failure. When travelling, thewarning flashes for a failure to the elec-tronic automatic gearbox and it stays onpermanently if the gearbox oil tempera-ture is too high.

Turning the ignition key to MAR thewarning light turns on but it must go outafter about 6 seconds.

    t

If the warning lightstays on permanently, reduce the performance

level required from the engine un-til it goes out and then contactAuthorized Alfa Romeo Servicesas soon as possible to have thegearbox oil level checked. If the

warning light flashes, minimisethe performance level requiredand contact Authorized AlfaRomeo Services immediately.

    EQUIVALENT TEMPERATURE

The system makes it possible to controlthe passenger compartment climate main-taining the equivalent temperature lev-el required by the driver. This equivalenttemperature is an estimator of the idealtemperature (obtained through the devel-opment of a complex mathematical algo-rithm) needed to obtain the best temper-ature and well-being in the passengercompartment.

To bring about this operating condition, select:

    the equivalent temperature re-quired pressing the button (B-fig. 94);

the AUTO position pressing the but-ton (D).

IMPORTANT The compressor can beengaged automatically or manually. Toswitch from one operating mode to theother see the Compressor on/off but-ton paragraph in this chapter.

    DESCRIPTION OF CONTROLS(fig. 94)

A - Climate control dedicated screen se-lector button.

B - Rocker button for adjusting the e-quivalent temperature.

C - Rocker button for fan speed adjust-ment.

D - Automatic system operation selectorbutton.

    E - Climate control compressor off/onbutton.

    DESCRIPTION OF OPERATINGSTRATEGIES

Operating the button, theclimate control system sets to automati-cally control the following functions:

temperature of the air at the vents

and outlets fan speed (constantly changing)

    air distribution

    air recirculation

    compressor engagement.

It is still however possible to intervenemanually on the following functions:

    fan speed

    air distribution

    air recirculation

    compressor engagement.

The functions activated manually havepriority over the automatic ones and theyremain memorised until automatic controlis re-activated.

With one or more functions engagedmanually, adjustment of the temperatureadmitted to the passenger compartment

still continues to be controlled automati-cally by the system except with the com-pressor off: in fact, in this condition theair admitted to the passenger compart-ment cannot be below the outside tem-perature.

Pressing the button for en-gaging/disengaging automatic operation, the system may be in one of the follow-ing conditions:

    FULL AUTO with automatic controlof the fan speed and air distribution;

    AUTO with automatic control only ofthe fan speed or of air distribution accord-ing to the drivers preference;

MAN with manual operation wherethe driver controls the fan speed and airdistribution directly.

Pressing the button turnsthe compressor on/off. With the com-pressor off, the air admitted to the pas-senger compartment can not be cooled ordehumidified and recirculation is switchedoff automatically to avoid misting thewindows: when wanting to activate recir-culation in the condition, press the corre-sponding button.

Pressing the button againwith the compressor off, will restore theoperating conditions of before the com-pressor was turned off.

Pressing the button turnsoff/back on the climate control, in the

former case air is no longer admitted tothe passenger compartment which is thusisolated from outside, in the latter, theprevious operating mode is restored.

Pressing the button selectsthe possible air distributions to the pas-senger compartment:

Flow of air towards the windscreenand front side windows

Distribution of the flow betweenthe windscreen /front side windows andlower part of the passenger compartment

Flow of air to the lower part of thepassenger compartment and secondaryflow of air towards the windscreen andfront side windows

    Distribution of the flow between

the upper centre, centre, side and rearoutlets and the lower part of the passen-ger compartment

  • 7/28/2019 072-092 GB 166 mono

    16/21

    87

Flow of air towards the centre up-per vent, centre and side dashboard out-lets and rear outlets.

If the system was in the FULL AUTOmode, pressing the buttonpasses to the simple automatism condi-

tion: i.e. the system chooses the fanspeed and mixing to obtain the equiva-lent temperature required, but will notchange the distribution selected manually.

Press ing the rec irculat ion button, the system automatically reac-

tivates the compressor if it was deactivat-ed manually; to maintain recirculationwith the compressor of, it is necessary to

press the button to deacti-vate the compressor.

IMPORTANT In this condition (recir-culation on and compressor off), remem-ber that the windows may steam up veryquickly.

Pressing the button the climatecontrol automatically activates the func-tions required to quicken demisting/de-frosting of the windscreen and side win-dows. Rearscreen heating and door mirrorheating are also automatically engaged(for a determinate length of time).

Pressing the button engagesrearscreen heating and door mirror heat-ing for a determinate length of time.

Manually setting one of the climate con-trol functions, the others continue to becontrolled automatically; in particular the

air temperature is always controlled auto-matically to reach the required equiva-lent temperature in the passenger com-partment.

IMPORTANT When working in theFULL AUTO condition, the system canautomatically engage recirculation or de-activate the compressor to cool/heat the

passenger compartment faster ordemist/defrost the windscreen and sidewindows.

IMPORTANT When the engine isturned off the system memorises the cli-mate control operating condition, whichwill be automatically resumed when theengine is started again.

    ACTIVATED CARBON

    DUST/POLLEN AIR FILTER

The filter has the specific capability tocombine the mechanical air filtering func-tion with an electrostatic effect so thatthe outside air admitted to the passengercompartment is purified and free of parti-cles such as dust, pollen etc.

    In addition to the above-mentioned

function there is also an effective reduc-tion of the concentration of pollutants ow-ing to a layer of activated carbons on thelower surface of the filter.

The filtering action takes place when airis admitted from outside (recirculationoff) and when the air is recirculated (re-circulation on).

ADDITIONAL HEATER(Optional, for JTD and JTD 20V Multijet

    versions, where applicable)

The additional heater makes it possibleto integrate heating of the engine coolant

fluid, immediately after starting the en-gine and when travelling, to more quicklyreach and maintain the optimum operat-ing temperature of the engine and pas-senger compartment heater.

The device works completely automati-cally and it is activated only when the en-gine is running with an outside tempera-ture of +5C or less and a coolant fluid

temperature below 60C.When the coolant fluid reaches 61C,

the electronic control unit reduces thepower of the burner and stops the heaterwhen a temperature of 72C is reached, reactivating it automatically when the flu-id temperature falls below 60C. Con-versely, if after reducing the power of theburner, the fluid temperature begins to

fall, the control unit cuts in to restore fullpower.

    The system comprises:

a fuel oil burner for heating the waterand a combustion gas exhaust silencer.

A batching pump connected to the carreservoir pipes to supply the burner.

An electronic control unit for control-ling burner adjustment.

    An outside temperature sensor.

IMPORTANT The heater is fitted witha thermal limiting device which cuts offcombustion in the event of overheatingdue to lack/leaks of coolant fluid.

The heater is also protected by the auto-

matic fuel cut-off switch, which shuts offthe fuel in the event of a crash of a cer-tain size: to see how this works see theautomatic fuel cut-off switch para-graph.

If the filter is not re-placed the efficiency ofthe climate control sys-

    tem may be seriously compro-mised.

The dust/pollen f i lter should bechecked over at least once a year by AlfaRomeo Authorized Services, preferably atthe beginning of summer.

If the vehicle is habitually driven in pol-luted areas or on dusty roads the systemshould be checked and if necessarychanged more often.

  • 7/28/2019 072-092 GB 166 mono

    18/21

    89

IMPORTANT When the heater isworking with the vehicle stationery andthe engine running, standing outside thecar near the rear wheel arch a low noisecaused by normal operation of the heatercan be heard.

The temperature nearthe heater should neverexceed 120C (e.g. dur-

ing body painting operations inthe workshop oven). Higher tem-perature could damage the elec-tronic control unit components.

For maintenance and repairs con-tact only Authorized Alfa RomeoServices and only use originalspare parts.

    MAINTENANCE

Have the additional heater checked atregular intervals by Authorized AlfaRomeo Services. This will ensure safe,cost-effective working of the heater andalso long life.

The burner exhaust gasis released in the centre

floor area: therefore never parkthe car with the engine runningover inflammable surfaces, fire

    hazard!
