Dear Readers,

I would firstly like to wish you Eid Mubarak. It has been an incredibly fulfilling Ramadan. We have all abstained from food, water and earthly pleasures and

have found deep unity amongst each other because of it. It has been a blessing to spend this time in quiet contemplation.

Welcome to our special July travel issue of ABODE magazine. This month we have pulled out all the stops to bring you up to date on the latest trends

emerging from Doha and around the world.

Our cover editorial with Bambah Boutique was shot in the luxurious setting of Lake Como, Italy. Celebrating the brand's fresh new Spring/Summer

collection, this was the perfect location in which to shoot the summery feel of the quaint Italian lakeside getaway which was reflected throughout the

entire collection in spectacular fashion.

On the beauty front, we’ve gathered all of the best travel-sized products you need to look fresh and beautiful as soon as you step off the plane.

Evolve fitness guru Flavio educates us on the benefits of travel and lets us in on a few secrets on how to utilize our free time in the best way possible.

Our correspondent in Mexico, Francesca Cruz, takes us to the mystical waters of Akumal, a coastal resort on Mexico’s Riviera Maya. We explore the deep

waters, swim with endangered sea turtles and take a leisurely stroll down the pristine beaches.

Now we all look forward to a wonderful Eid full of activities and time spent with our families.

I hope that you have safe travels wherever your destination may be.

SAINT-TROPEZ, FRANCEA breathtaking coastal town located in the south of France, St. Tropez sits 62 miles west of Nice in the country’s legendary Cote D'Azur region. St. Tropez is easily one of Europe’s most happening destinations in the summer. A seaside resort and an escape haven for the likes of Jay Z and Beyonce, Dominico Dolce, as well as Victoria and David Beckham, celebrities find themselves spending their lazy summer days along the coast in the Baie de Pampelonne’s private beaches. Where to Stay: Inaugurated in 1967 by Brigitte Bardot, Hotel Byblos remains one of the town’s most iconic hotels. Home to a nightclub called Les Cave Du Roy, the world’s hottest celebrities flock to this exclusive spot from March onwards and party until the early hours of the morning. Mick Jagger as well as Sean “P.Diddy” Combs can often be spotted having the time of their lives in an environment free of paparazzi and naturally surrounded by their bodyguards. Rooms in this exclusive resort start at $1,200 per night and you are advised to book way ahead in advance for a chance to mingle with your favourite famous faces.

STYLE FEATURE

PORTOFINO, ITALYA charming fishing village and vacation resort, Portofino is famous for its picturesque harbour and it’s colourfully painted buildings that line the shore along the Italian Riviera. The town features stunning beaches, well-conserved nature, and pristine views of the Mediterranean Sea. The locale is also quite the celeb magnet- especially in the summer times- when names including Mariah Carey and fiance James Packer and Rihanna flock to this little town to see and be seen.Where to Stay: Madonna and George Clooney call this place their home away from home; if you want to mingle with your favourite stars, then the Splendido hotel is the place to be. With just 64 rooms and suites, the hotel still remains a top pick amongst its European counterparts. Featuring a saltwater infinity pool, tennis courts, a wellness centre and spa, expect to spot the likes of everyone from the Duke of Windsor to Steven Spielberg during your stay. Rooms start at $500 per night. What to Do: Rent a motor boat and spend a day touring the town from the coastline. Unwind in between taking in the amazing sights by sunbathing on the deck just like your favourite stars do.

SOUTH BEACH, MIAMIWhy South Beach: Not too far away from Hollywood, South Beach- also known as SoBe- is already home to the hottest rappers in the music industry. The city enjoys a warm climate throughout the year, which proves to be ideal for celebrities looking for a quick getaway. Everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Gisele Bundchen, Tom Brady, and the Kardashians has been there and they keep coming back every year.Where to Stay: Although you cannot actually stay there, it’s nice to dream: Soho South Beach is the area’s most exclusive spot. The members-only club is frequented by the likes of Paris Hilton, Martha Stewart, and Naomi Campbell- who all get to enjoy a spa and gym and a private beach, all in the comfort of one of the hotel’s 50 guest rooms. While you may not actually get the chance to sleep there, you might as well rub elbows with your favourite stars at the property’s equally impressive restaurant, Cecconi. What to Do: What all celebrities do. Shop during the day at South Beach’s exclusive designer boutiques, lounge by the pool while having a cold juice, and get ready for the bustling parties that take place all over the city during the night. Fashionistas get a bonus pick-me-up since they can enjoy the Mercedes Benz fashion week in early July while culture buffs should be sure to attend the Art Basel art exhibition that takes place every December.

CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICOWhy Cabo: When celebrities get tired of Hollywood, they hop onto their private jets and fly just over two hours to the sunny resort city of Cabo San Lucas. Named as one of the top 5 touristic locations in Mexico, Cabo is a prominent vacation and spa destination for those looking to get away from Los Angeles’ hustle and bustle. With breathtaking beaches, natural rock formations – including the iconic Los Arcos landmark- sprawling seaside golf courses, Michelin star restaurants and a vibrant nightlife, Cabo is undoubtedly a great escape. Where to Stay: With so many options by the sea, you want to make sure you’re living the high life like your favourite celebrities do. Frequented by guests such as Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, the Capella Pedregal resort offers a romantic setting for couples in villa-style rooms with private mini-infinity pools overlooking the Pacific Ocean with prices starting at $800 per night. The extravagant resort is just a 10-minute walk from Cabo’s marina and the destination’s vibrant nightlife. What to Do: Believe it or not, one of the best times to visit Cabo is actually during the winter! That’s right; from December to March, charter a luxurious yacht and view the majestic humpback whales that migrate annually.

FANILLA COUTURE

RAMADAN COLLECTION 2016“Change is Good”, as Qatar-based brand designer Razan Suliman calls this new line and is

the creative insight that brings together the inspirations for Fanilla Couture’s Ramadan Spring/Summer 2016 collection. A-line silhouettes consisting of silk and satin are built on the impressions of traditional Khaliji ‘Nasqh’ plaster carvings and are combined with the metaphors of a botanical garden. Befitting for the vibrant and free-spirited contemporary woman, this collection is one not

to be missed. All garments are exclusively crafted in Portugal.

The Resort 2017 collections have poured into our social media feeds over the past few weeks

with Chanel cruising to Cuba, Louis Vuitton rocking in Rio and Gucci weaving through

the enclaves of the 13th Century cloisters at Westminster Abbey. It was a glamorous global affair; let's take a closer look at the emerging

summer style.

There’s nothing quite like a good belt to hold everything together, especially if it’s a masterfully tailored Erdem jacket. Osman, Altuzarra and Chanel are all belting up for their collections this year, defining our silhouettes and

reincorporating this wardrobe staple back into our lives.

BELT IT OUTThese days, how we dress and express ourselves come hand in hand. However, gender very rarely plays a role in the outfits some of us are wearing. Cue gender neutrality in a generation of millennial’s who want options, options, options! 3.1 Philip Lim, Gucci and MM6 Maison Margiela blurred the lines and redefined

the quintessential woman of today.

The term ‘Normcore’ originally exploded into our consciousness thanks to a trend forecasting agency named K-Hole. Normcore finds liberation in being nothing special, and realises that adaptability leads to belonging. Nevertheless, houses like DKNY, Calvin Klein and Dior reinterpreted the trend and incorporated

this colourless, formless aesthetic into their collections.

NORM TO THE COREIt’s all about extra large sleeves for Resort 2017, apparently! Houses jumping on the overloaded bandwagon this year is Fendi, Chanel and Christian Dior and they're all amplifying their sleeves bigtime!

Gucci showcased its Resort 2017 collection at Westminster Abbey in London this year and what better way to honour British history than to combine it all together- in one outfit. It was a clash of epic proportions but Gucci pulled it

Perfecting theArt of Haute Couture

Jewellerywith ‘SIMO WOMAN’

Qatar-based designer Simona Kreivenaite El-Fiky has

been making jewellery since she was 11 years old,

creating some of the finest custom pieces in the

country. She is more than just a jeweller- she is

an artist and master of her craft – her aesthetic

is unique, edgy, and classy. ABODE details

the style of Simona (affectionately known as

‘Simo’ to her friends) and how she has applied

her honed sense of style and affinity for all

things chic and translated it into the realm

of jewellery design.

ABODE: Can you share the story behind your first creation?

My interest in natural stones and crochet technique started at a very early

age. All women in my family are into crochet and so I grew up watching

and learning from them. I produced my first pieces at the age of eleven.

I’d mostly make pieces for myself, my family and my friends back then but

my style and technique have continued to evolve ever since.

ABODE: When you create your bespoke pieces of jewellery, what inspires you?

My main source of inspiration is Arab cultural heritage, Islamic arts and

the Middle East atmosphere overall. That means everything from a Inte

rvie

w b

y H

airi

ya S

anto

s

ABODE: Please tell us about yourself. How did you get to where you are now?

I was born and raised in Lithuania where I earned a Bachelor's degree

in Business Administration at Vytautas Magnus University. I've travelled

to over 15 countries around the world including Italy and Egypt but

it was in Egypt that I experienced Arab culture for the first time. I was

fascinated and overwhelmed by the rich cultural, historical and spiritual

presence found there. It was these trips that contributed significantly to

my artistic aspirations. In 2012 I launched SIMO trademark worldwide

together with my first official jewellery collection.

Bedouin woman in a stunning desert landscape to breathtaking pieces of architecture of past and present generations.

ABODE: How would you describe your design aesthetic?

Intricately designed attention given to each detail. I am a perfectionist and for that reason, it means that every piece I make is the absolute best, it’s the maximum I can do in that particular design. This year I started designing a complete look for women and launched my first modest clothing and accessories line consisting of belts and handbags.

ABODE: Can you tell us more about the recent creative project you have been working on?

Yes, it is a photoshoot at the W Doha hotel shot by Maria Finlay (on Instagram as @this.is.maria) and the beautiful makeup was done by Andrea Espinosa (on Instagram as @aemakeapp). I am a contributing blogger to Fash Squad Qatar, and the founder, Kellie Silva, was my model. Kellie has always shown such great support to me and to SIMO which I am very grateful for.

ABODE: Can you shed some light on your design process?

I first select and double check all the materials myself. I make sure I get

the best for my designs because I want them to be 100% perfect. It

might take me up to several months of research until I find what I need. I

love all different types of natural stones such as pearls, coral, agate, onyx,

star stones, the list goes on. I then use my favourite crochet technique

to combine it all together.

ABODE: What kind of person do you envision wearing your pieces?

Each of the SIMO pieces is designed and fully handcrafted by myself.

Therefore, they represent individuality rather than the mass production

or “synthetic fashion” as I call it. A SIMO piece is always something special.

I want every woman that wears SIMO not only to wear it and look great

but to feel it and have a deeper connection with it too.

TheStylish

TravellerWhen the travel bug bites, I say, “Scratch.” Getting out and exploring the world is one of life’s most gratifying experiences. While you’re at it, you might as well look your sharpest.

Gone are the days when a droopy tropical-print button-down constituted style. The modern gentleman is no longer content with wearing the same pair of jeans for a week when away from home. But how do you look good without lugging half of your wardrobe across the world?

Going away for the summer? These looks from Bally are perfect for anything from a beach retreat in Malibu to a metropolitan excursion in Madrid.

When sun and sand are involved, sandals and sunglasses should top the packing list. T-shirts ensure ultimate comfort, while a light jacket comes in handy when night falls.

Here are some tips I swear by when packing so that I have functional essentials

that make the vacation or work trip unfussy yet

fashionable!

Loafers, moccasins, espadrilles, boat shoes – all great to wear

and pack when travelling. Think about the hassle of removing shoes at airports and religious sites, on a spontaneous beach walk and when shopping for

new footwear. Slip-ons are usually constructed flatter and lighter than their lacy counterparts. They’re not necessarily less dressy either – plenty of leather shoe designs are lace-free and fuss-free.

Consider this every man’s best friend. A jacket can turn your look formal or trendy. Worn over a long-sleeve shirt, you’re business-ready; throw it over a t-shirt and you’re set to hit the town. Better yet, you can use this on board your flight to take the chill off the cabin temperature -- saves room in your luggage and keeps you comfortable. Also, don't underestimate the utility of jacket pockets to store cash, travel documents and electronics.

Style begins with good grooming. You can’t profess to feel confident when you’ve been brushing your teeth using cotton-swabs and hotel bar soap or washing your hair with liquid hand gel. Bring along the products that make up your daily ablutions. If they don’t come in travel sizes, buy a kit and fill up the mini bottles and jars with

those regimen necessities. You’ll avoid a lot of angst looking for or coping without them at your destination.

City breaks mean comfortable

walking shoesand easy-to-iron

long-sleeve shirts; denim is one great

example. Don’t forget a sport coat for

that special restaurant

reservation.

Bring a Blazer

Hold-alls

Man up with a man bag! The premium ones in style and durability are leather. These holdalls

work as carry-on luggage and are also practical when you’re out exploring. They’ll hold everything

from your sunnies to a bottle of water and your shopping. I keep a little kit of wet wipes, anti-

bacterial gel and emergency chocolate in mine. They’ve not failed me yet.

There's one thing we're sure of: your to-do list before travelling is one hell of a long one and with all the things that need to be done and packed, the last thing you may want to do is plan how to tame that mane on holiday. To lighten your load, here are several hair control tips and reminders for a healthy and worry-free hair

throughout your summer break.

THE ULTIMATE

Travel And HolidayHAIRCARE

1 Pre-Travel Hair PrepBefore travelling, take note of the current weather at your destination. If you’re landing in a tropical country, it’s best to pamper your hair with products that will prepare and protect your hair from sun damage. If you’re expecting cold weather in the U.K, pack some hair hydrating products to prevent frizzy hair.

Wash your hair before the flight, especially if you’re gonna have a long one. Hairstyle-wise, it should be low-maintenance. A messy bun, fishtail or french braids and low ponytails are some of the easiest yet chicest hairstyles for travelling.

2 Carry-On EssentialsBobby pins and hair ties should always be on your hair essentials list. We highly recommend the ribbon or the telephone wire hair ties. These ties won’t crease your hair no matter how long you’ve had your ponytail on.

A travel-size hair spray that gives a great amount of volume should also be on your carry-on. If you’re feeling extra glam or meeting your husband on the other end and you want to properly fix your hair with a hair straightener, GHD and BabyBliss are the top brands that have the best hair tools available in travel size. And lastly, don’t forget to bring a good hair brush or comb.

3Long Flight Hair ManagementWe all know that long flights can take a toll on our skin, neck, legs and of course, our hair. Sometimes you need to go straight to a meeting or somewhere that requires you to look as presentable as you can.

To get rid of hair static, you can either use hairspray or dryer sheets (so be sure to slip a sheet or two into your handbag before the flight). If your hair is really messy and you don’t have much time, just put it up into a bun or a sleek ponytail. These will make you look neat and fresh despite the long hours of flight.

Outdoor Hair ControlSummer holidays are the most rewarding time of the year. To keep your hair healthy throughout the holiday and enjoy your getaway, make sure that you give it the proper protection from the sun. This summer is also the perfect season to pull off some lovely hairstyles like the beachy waves. There are plenty of different kinds of braids too that are perfect if you’re doing lots of outdoor activities.

With your hair damp, separate down the middle and twist two low buns. Pin it for 20-30 minutes

then let it out for no-heat, natural waves.

ABODE: Using all of the extensive knowledge you have accumulated throughout your successful career, what type of cosmetic procedures do you think Khloe Kardashian has undergone in recent years?

In my opinion, she likely had a rib resection, waist binding, fillers and probably fat injections to her face, fat injections to her bottom and a rhinoplasty.

ABODE: We understand you are currently visiting the GCC. Why is this? What is your first impression of the Middle East?

I have had many Middle Eastern patients over the years who have continuously asked me to open an office in the region. And of course, with the demand for plastic surgery in the UAE on the rise, this area became an obvious choice for me. Moreover, my wife has a foundation called Face Forward that helps survivors of domestic violence, which has recently partnered with the Dubai Women and Children Foundation, established in July 2007 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

ABODE: Cosmetic enhancement is more popular than ever now, what are the top 3 most requested procedures?

Non-invasively, botox, fillers and Thermage are widely spread. When it comes to surgery, rhinoplasties or more commonly known as “nose jobs” and facial fat injections are very popular, and of course, liposuction and breast implants are certainly the top most requested procedures.

ABODE: Why can some procedures go completely undetected while others can look so obvious?

Yes, sometimes this is because it is a dramatic change. Other times it is because the procedure was done badly. It is always best to make small changes over a period of time rather than to go straight ahead and dramatically change your look.

ABODE: Let us in on the secret to a natural looking procedure?

Good surgery techniques and judgment. Using the patient’s own tissue rather than using implants. Replacing something the body lost or doesn't have instead of trying to create something new (such as nasal tip grafts and breast implants that are too large for a frame). Doing the right thing for the right patient and avoiding a cookie-cutter approach to everything and is the best way to ensure natural beauty.

ABODE: What is the number one procedure that is requested by a celebrity before the awards season?

Before awards season, or any big red carpet appearances, it’s common for celebrities to come in about two weeks before, and they all come in for Botox and fillers. Two weeks is suggested in case bruising occurs. If there’s a smaller window of time, a couple of days before an appearance, Thermage is common for smoothing the skin and the appearance of wrinkles.

ABODE: As we all know, cosmetically altering our faces and bodies has led to a very high bar being set for perfection. Considering this, how do you feel you are contributing to body positivity?

Patient selection is key. If someone has a body dysmorphic issue, they can be hurt with plastic surgery and the surgeon should say no. If someone is healthy psychologically and has a well-defined complaint such as "I don't like the bump on my nose" or "My eyes look tired and droopy" then they are good candidates and their overall self-esteem will be improved when they leave my office.

HOW TRAVEL

benefits yourwell-being

SWITCH OFF We choose to travel because we want a break from our hectic repetitive lives. Getting away gives us a chance to forget our routine and live in the now. You can eat when you feel like eating, sleep when you’re tired and do what you feel like doing when you feel like doing it because in our busy working days we don’t always get these choices. This small break from our routine helps our minds to relax and take a break from deadlines, appointments and whatever else is going on in our cluttered day to day lives. Of course, when I say switching off that includes technology as well. Give your brain a time out from all this random data and stimulate your brain with your surroundings. Are you always looking at picturesque landscapes on Instagram? Go and experience the real thing. Got too many Facebook ‘’friends’’ from all over the world? Talk to them face to face or make new buddies.

BROADEN YOUR MINDTo truly grasp the idea of travelling broadening your mind you must step out of your comfort zone and fully embrace the country. Otherwise, you are not educating yourself or gaining new experiences that help nourish your mind. Get out there and discover what the country has to offer – this is how we learn. Speak to the locals and ask how they live. Let them ask you about your life. You might learn something new about yourself as well as discover what it is that they do differently. Eat the food they offer and learn about what ingredients they use and the health benefits that come along with each particular dish. Take risks when it comes to invitations, but be safe of course. Only then will you truly understand what it is to be in their shoes and take off yours.

BE GRATEFULI have travelled to a fair few countries in which there is a good economical standard of living as well as to those where there is not. During my journey, I have found that people with less seem much happier than those with more. They are more grateful for what they have, making them more positive individuals. Travelling opens your eyes and makes you thankful for what you have. It will give you a clearer outlook on life and you become a more generous person. Trust me when I say that this generosity will always come back to you.

MAKE MEMORIESNo one likes a show off but if you have stories to tell and someone is interested then fire away. Why not? Traveling gives you many life experiences that make interesting antidotes when in social situations. Perhaps you are shy and struggle to find topics of conversation when with friends. Well I’ll tell you one thing. No one has come home after a trip and not got a good story to tell. These stories will be with you for a lifetime. You can tell your children and grandchildren in years to come and pass on some key lessons you’ve learnt along the way. A travel journal will ensure nothing is lost and you will cherish your memories forever.

ACTIVE BODY FOR A HEALTHY MINDThe excuse of nothing to do, it’s too cold or I have no time are usually invalid once you are on holiday. Use the time you have to give you that extra boost of energy by exercising or at least being more active. Going out for walks whilst on your journey of discovery will automatically release endorphins in the brain giving you a positive energizing outlook on life. As they say two birds, one stone. Arriving home slimmer may not have been one of your main objectives of your trip but it might just happen. This will surely do wonders for your self-esteem and confidence on your return, along with that luscious new tan.

Words by Flavio Rodriguez • www.evolvemindbodysoul.com • [email protected] • +974 50403234

Here are 5 great reasons why travel is the number one medicine

Are you looking to de-stress, energise and recharge your batteries? Coming home after an invigorating, relaxed trip abroad is absolutely

fantastic for your health, well-being and productivity. Switching off from the norm and your monotonous routine is sometimes all

you need to rejuvenate and come back feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world again. That is why I believe travel to be so

important for general health, not just in the short term but it will be beneficial to you in years to come too.

INTERIOR DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

With her more than 30 years of experience, Kit Kemp is a highly recognized interior designer, design director and co-owner (with husband Tim) of Firmdale Hotels, a nine-person team that’s created eight hotels in London and one in New York. She is a passionate artist and entrepreneur with a vision for only the finest aesthetics. Her inclination for colour, floral prints, distinctive patterns and bespoke fabrics have enabled her to create a vibrant, whimsical and quintessentially British look that defines the brand.

In each one of her hotels, no room is the same. Each one has a unique sense of style and character, reflecting her travels and fusing cultures as she designs. Her creations are an explosion of colour, pattern and texture. The interiors are eye-catching, characterized by unlikely combinations of felt applique, rich fabrics and colourful artworks of everything from African figures to Indian landscapes.

Kemp believes that when it comes to design, there are no rules. “It is about trusting your instincts, being prepared to take some risks and being clever with affordable and accessible pieces”, she says. A well as an accomplished interior designer, Kemp is also an author of 2 books, 'A Living Space' and her latest hardback, 'Every room tells a story'. In this book, she shares her inspiring personal voyages and her ethos - design is not something to fear, but instead something to be embraced and enjoyed.

It is very importantto have a sense of arrival. The

character and feel of a building should make you feel like an

Boulangerry BlogsRestaurants in Doha tend to offer menus that are so long, they take a good

chunk of time to properly digest. I sometimes find it bewildering when given too many options that I tend to prefer places that offer a smaller, more targeted selection. Here are two on my current rotation.

Dining Outside the ABODE

Gokul Gujarati KitchenRemoving the element of decision altogether, Gokul Gujarati Kitchen doesn’t even bother with a menu. What you get is a ‘thali’ (meaning

'plate' in Hindi) composed fully of vegetarian dishes that change on a daily basis. Stewed eggplant, chickpea curries and lightly spiced dals are just some of the delights to look forward to, along with griddle-hot chappatis that don’t stop coming.

The friendly servers circulate with top-ups and ensure your plate is constantly piled up. Even when you think you’re done, don’t be surprised if they cheekily sneak in a few extra pieces of pakora and dhokla. The hearty meal costs just QR20. If that’s not enough, you can always grab a bagful of homemade snacks and sweets to enjoy at home.

I will be ‘dishing’ out my advice on the best places to dine out in Doha every month, here between the pages of ABODE magazine.

Muttabaq & SajA 24-hour snack chain that can’t be missed. The sole item on the menu is mutabbaq, an Indian-influenced bread dish popular in Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Ingredients of your choosing are folded into layers of paratha then cooked on a griddle. More than 30 sweet and savoury options await, including the likes of cheese and zaatar or my recommendation, Nutella and banana.

The outlets are more take-out than eat-in, though the branch on Al Difaat Street offers plastic stools on the sidewalk outside the store – a surprisingly comfortable spot to share this hot bread with a group while taking in the bustle of Al Sadd.

A tiny beach town in Mexico’s Mayan Riviera, Akumal is famous for its crystalline pool-like waters, year-round warm temperatures, starburst-hued sunsets, and the coolest attraction of all - the

opportunity to snorkel with endangered sea turtles. It’s the kind of pueblo that beckons you to kick off your sandals and go for a stroll on the powder-white sands. Akumal consists of a series of bays.

There’s Las Bahias de Akumal, Half Moon Bay in the north, Akumal Bay, Jade Bay where a lot of the residential communities are located, Punta Sur and Aventuras Akumal. All are sprinkled with cosy

boutique hotels and some all-inclusive luxury resorts. It’s a seaside hamlet that encourages diversion and repose.

THE LOWDOWN: If you take the rustic path and head north for about 20 minutes from the entrance of Akumal, you’ll come upon Yal Ku Lagoon. Yal Ku Lagoon is an inland lagoon made up of surrounding cenotes that connect to the Caribbean Sea, resulting in calm waters with underwater rock formations and a mix of both salt and fresh water called 'brackish'. The nature-made estuary is full of fresh and saltwater fish. Within the lagoon, you’ll find bronze sculptures created by a local artist that adds beauty to the natural vegetation. There are small palapas with accompanying hammocks that can be rented. There is also a snack bar, bathrooms, showers, changing rooms, lockers, rental cabins, and rental equipment for snorkelling.

TRAVELLER TIP: The cost is $12 for adults and $9 for children. Make sure the sunscreen you bring is biodegradable to protect the environment.

THE LOWDOWN: This exquisite stretch of coastline offers pristine

beaches with talc coloured sand and the opportunity to swim with

turtles. The name Akumal is Mayan for the place of the turtles. Scuba

divers looking for a place a bit off of the radar founded the town in

1958. With the world’s second largest barrier reef located just off shore,

Akumal has become one of the best places in the world to scuba and

snorkel. For a snorkel tour with your own guide and the chance to

swim with the famed green sea turtles, Akumal Dive Center provides

the very best service. The tour runs at $20 per person, or you may

rent the equipment for $15. Aside from the sea turtles, you’ll see sting

rays, tropical fish and a kaleidoscope of colours in the shallow reef

structures. Visit akumaldivecenter.com for more information.

Please take into consideration the turtles are endangered, they are not to be touched, simply

admired.

THE LOWDOWN: Located in the Half Moon Bay portion of Akumal is La Vida Buena Restaurant (translates to 'the good life'). With a wonderful array of seafood options, the non-seafood-lovers can sink their teeth into the Mayan chicken, marinated in achiote and baked in banana leaves; it’s the local favourite! With sandy floors, and adult swings hanging from the rafters, this is more of a flip flops and casual beachwear establishment, so you definitely don’t have to worry about the dress code. The focus is on good food and service in a relaxed atmosphere with wonderful views of the bay.

WHO’S IT FOR? Couples, singles, families.

TRAVELLER TIP: La Vida Buena is about an 8-minute drive from the Yal Ku Lagoon and is a great place to enjoy local fare.

Oman is a hidden treasure in the Middle East, a source of pride for all who call it home and an ideal destination for transient residents such as myself. I have been to Oman before, Muscat to

be exact, and it was a great experience. However, Salalah was different. Salalah was magical.

Only 20 kilometres from Salalah Airport, the Salalah Rotana Resort is surrounded by one of Oman’s most breathtaking natural settings and is nestled between spectacular mountains, fresh water springs and tropical scenery. I journeyed to the beautiful city on a hot April morning on Oman Air with a close friend of mine in tow and arrived, to my delight, onto foreign shores with much more forgiving weather. Salalah seems to abide by its own rules; its weather is often dry, yet cooler than Muscat. But it is when July and August come rolling around that the real magic unfolds. The Khareef season in Salalah is a time when the city is at its most lush, all of the flowers bloom and the trees and grass grow in tenfolds. This season draws thousands of visitors from in and around the surrounding Gulf countries

wanting to escape the blistering Middle Eastern heat every year and this is the perfect place in which to spend your Eid vacation.

Ranging from 43 to 143 square metres, Salalah Rotana Resort boasts some of the most spacious accommodations in Oman. Private terraces, en-suite bathrooms and generous living areas make for a grand setting with optimal privacy and superior comfort.

Spotlighting the rooms at the Salalah Rotana Resort, I stayed in a beachfront villa fully equipped with 2 big screen TV’s, a living room, kitchenette, a spacious bedroom and bathroom with a bathtub to die for. The terrace stretches out onto the perfect setting of the resort and merges harmoniously with the sea front. I enjoyed the most beautiful sunset out on the peaceful terrace with my drink in hand and ready for the wonderful dinner to come at Silk Road restaurant. There are many hotels to choose from in this idyllic destination, but the Salalah Rotana Resort is truly the best by far.

With four restaurants including Saffron, The Beach restaurant and Silk Road, the resort offers the perfect mélange of dining options from casual beachside cuisine and all-day-dining to fine dining Middle Eastern and Western cuisine. I concluded my day at the Silk Road restaurant where I enjoyed an array of different dishes, my order consisting of appetising Japanese sushi with salmon and my main meal was a delicious Korean dish of Kung Pao Prawns - wok fried jumbo prawns with dried chilli and cashews. Simply divine after having spent the day at the beach and to be able to come here for a little rest and recreation to unwind and relax is a delight. The dessert came in the form of Caramel Popcorn Sundae with candied nuts – a real treat for those of us with a major sweet tooth!

Working in the media brings with it wonderful opportunities as well stressful work and deadlines; I needed some down time and so I spent an afternoon at the luxe ‘Zen the spa at Rotana’. It is Rotana’s home-grown spa concept derived from ancient holistic Asian philosophies which also features eight magnificent treatment rooms that blend natural Omani elements with holistic treatments and rituals including full

body massages, facials and soothing wraps. I felt at home, relaxed and rejuvenated after my many hours spent lazing around with not a care in the world.

Among the many activities to do in and around the resort, the most memorable for me was the excursion through Salalah, a tour sponsored by Al Majan International. With a few guests, we toured the small city, visited the Instagram-worthy Al Mughsayl Blowholes, we followed the enchanting Frankincense Trail and spontaneously stopped off at a small Omani restaurant on the side of the road selling strips of lamb meat traditionally cooked over hot coals. All served up in a polystyrene plate, yet delicious and satisfying. Have your own authentic experience by booking a tour at the hotel’s front desk.

After a magical weekend in a mysterious land, we felt as though we had truly experienced the best of Omani hospitality. Not only was the resort one of the best I have ever stayed in, but the people are kind, humble and willing to help you at every

turn. Every moment here at the Salalah Rotana Resort was a pleasure, filled with thrilling first-time experiences. I cannot recommend this resort enough to families wanting a break, couples wanting some romantic time or friends out for a major adventure!

This trip to Oman was sponsored by Oman Air. Economy Class passengers travelling on Oman Air are very well catered for. For a modest fee, the Majan Lounge offers an exceptional standard of hospitality and comfort. Contained within a uniquely modern design, but retaining the key elements of the Omani culture and heritage, the Majan Lounge’s facilities include full Wi-Fi connectivity, a business centre with computer terminals fax and printers, resting rooms with “full recliner” seats, and a media area with full satellite TV, magazines and newspapers. A fully serviced drinks bar, hot and cold snack buffet counter and modern bathrooms with showers and baby changing facilities, ensure a relaxed start to any journey.

IF YOU'RE A PHOTOGRAPHY ENTHUSIAST Cuba; once the most thriving island in the Caribbean fell to Communist rule in 1959, becoming a time capsule clouded in mystery and allure. Imagine a combination of decadence and decay. For the most part, no new construction or restoration since 1959 has taken place so it feels like a rundown Paris by the sea. Buildings with ornate embellishments are rife, columns and mosaics are plentiful and beautiful Carrera marble is on display. Head to San Francisco de Assisi Square taking in the Spanish colonial architecture and cobblestoned streets; take in the spirit of ‘La Habana Vieja’ (old Havana) and observe the locals sitting on steps smoking cigars. Walk to Hemingway’s hideout in the 1930s, the hotel Ambos Mundos—left just as if Hemingway were still calling it home. Another photographers’ dream is the Parque Central. Capture images of old American cars, the unusual coco cabs (three-wheeled taxis) and the locals buzzing about. Mesmerizing and totally Instagram-worthy!

Are you a thrill seeker? Then perhaps a gondola ride in Venice is not your cup of tea—make that, espresso. Are you a romantic that likes hot cocoa by a fireplace? Then booking a hike in Coast Rica might not go down too well. Get savvy on the best getaway for you based on your favourite pastime. Here are the five most popular

hobbies and the hottest destination befitting them. So, which one are you?

IF YOU'RE A WELLNESS AFICIONADOThere is no place on earth like Tulum, Mexico for this personality type. Perched piously on the tip of the Yucatan peninsula, overlooking jungle on one side and the most azure Caribbean waters on the other—Tulum equals nirvana to the eco and wellness junkie. A stretch of rural land with posh boutique hotels are sprinkled throughout the seaside enclave. Tulum caters to the traveller in search of meditation, yoga and organic food. There are so many delightful lodging options it’s hard to pick just one place. From the soothing and exotic Hotel Be Tulum; to the tree house hotel rooms of Azulik, or the luxury suites of Kore Tulum Retreat and Spa Resort—it was not easy to settle on just one. Most of these hotels incorporate the mind & body

experience, offering yoga classes and stocking their restaurants with locally grown organic produce.

FOR THE SOCIAL MEDIA OBSESSED For all things kitsch, for groovy gadgets, street fashion and innovation—there is no other place for you but Tokyo, Japan. This is the place for the selfie and social media obsessed. Tokyo is one big photo op in itself. From the Shibuya District—the pulse of fashion, culture & trendsetting, with the Harajuku youth dressed in doll-like anime getups, to the cities shopping haven, the Ginza district, and home to the most luxurious designer brands from all over the world. Tokyo combines the avante with traditional. You can’t get very far without coming across a temple or a shrine. Camera ready is what you must be—from taking Ninja classes; staying in a capsule hotel to Purikura photo booths in every other street corner, (photo booths where you can add makeup, and enlarge or change the colour of your eyes). Tokyo is oddly quirky, yet cool. Don’t miss out on the

Robot Restaurant, where dancers groove, illuminated by neon lights and you can even ride robotic dinosaurs & whales!

IF YOU'RE A THRILL SEEKERWith pristine mountains, untamable wilderness, lush rhododendron and evergreen forests, Nepal is the spot for you. Start your journey in the hiker’s paradise that is Bhutan, with its serene valleys and continue on to trek through the Himalayas. Attempt to climb (if you dare!) the highest mountain in the world: a 29,029 ft monstrosity, Everest. From the Tengboche Monastery, explore base camp Ama Dablam while taking in views of Kala Patar. Observe the turquoise lakes of Gokyo Valley and trek the summit of Gokyo Ri for the heart-stopping views of the highest peaks in the world: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and

Cho Oyu. This is not for the weary of heart, it’s the adventure of a lifetime!

IF YOU’RE A DEDICATED FOODIEMama Mia! Of course, we must head to Italy for all things foodie. The most spectacular gelato you'll ever indulge in is found at L'angolo Del Gelato via Trionfale Street in Rome. For pizza, Napoli and the Trianon restaurant and pizza parlour is the only place to taste this Italian staple. For pasta, travel to Sicily via Connie Costa and her Food Adventures. She’s a transformational coach, international speaker, published writer, and Sicilian food & wine expert based in Los Angeles who puts together mini travel escapes. One of those adventures is A Day Cooking with the Duchess; a culinary cultural experience that takes place in an 18th century Palazzo in Palermo by the Sea. Costa and her group in the company of the Duchess of Palma take you to the colourful market to select the freshest ingredients and then cook in the spacious kitchen of the palazzo for a

homemade pasta meal.

ABODE: Naser, you’ve clearly got rock and roll in your blood, but where did this passion start? It started when I was a kid. My father introduced me to the classics of the 60s and 70s rock and I just went on exploring from there. Also, I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s so as a kid I was always in record stores (at 7 or 8 years of age) checking out and buying new music. I’ve always wanted to be a musician and during my mid-teens, I picked up my first guitar and began teaching myself.

ABODE: Which international act influences you the most when they’re on stage? Eddie Van Halen, Michael Schenker, Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, Tony Iommi and Jimi Hendrix are the acts that influence me as a guitarist. In terms of bands, there are too many to list, I mean everything from Van Halen to Mastodon. I even have a passion for Funk and New Wave so my taste in music is pretty diverse, my record collection says it all!

ABODE: Rock music is not popular amongst the youth here in the GCC. Why do you think that is? And how do you intend on changing that?Rock music is not necessarily in the mainstream but we’ve got a pretty strong scene in Dubai, that’s where my band is currently based. Back in the 90s, a lot of kids here were into rock music but now globally the mainstream is saturated with other genres, which has resulted in rock bands being side lined. I have tried to inspire some sort of resurgence out here but as I’ve stated online before, quite frankly people seem to be more interested in a quick fix of cover bands playing crowd pleasers rather than watching a band playing original music.

ABODE: So many solo artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Bon Jovi are class acts. How do you keep your own sense of individuality and personality when you get up on stage and belt out your music? Without sounding pretentious, I think people have now gotten accustomed to my style of playing; I have developed my own signature sound. I mean if you listen to any of my records you can tell it’s me, the songwriting, the style of playing, the riffs, solos and the leads. It’s the result of years of playing and writing, I don’t necessarily use a formula and on each record. I explore new elements or develop and use new techniques but overall I have my archetypal sound.

ABODE: Making your first solo LP/debut album must have had some bumps in the road. If so, can you tell us a bit about that?My latest record, Praed Street, was a total joy to work on, aside from the fact that I had health problems which led to us taking some breaks, it was quite a quick process, I mean we finished the entire record in less than 40 sessions. Bader Al Sada, my co-producer, is an amazingly talented musician and totally understands what direction I’m going in with my music.

ABODE: Can you share with us the biggest frustration you’ve had so far in your career and how this setback has molded you into a more passionate musician? The biggest setback recently has been my condition (tenosynovitis). It’s a painful condition which affects my hands and can be pretty depressing but it has made me more determined to practice and become the best guitarist I can be and in all honesty, I am very thankful that despite this illness my playing is better than ever.

ABODE: And what has been the highlight of your career? There have been several. Getting on the radio in Qatar and the UAE the first time and appearing on TV in both countries were amazing experiences. Seeing your album on the shelves or record stores is always a special feeling but I guess putting out “Praed Street” and the response we’ve gotten so far has been pretty incredible.

The response to the single “Prevail” in particular moved me. That was a song I wrote about fighting against the physical pain I had experienced over the years and to hear people tell me they’ve felt inspired by it or played that song when times get tough, really moved me. One of my favourite guitarists Raymond Sanchez (from the LA band Thrown Into Exile) posted that he listens to it when working out, reading that was pretty humbling.

ABODE: What exciting projects are you currently working on?The band and I are busy scheduling shows for the rest of the year, I’m also getting ready to release a few more singles off the album. The next one in line is “Animal” which is about animal rights, something I am deeply passionate about and it’ll come out with a music video which I am currently preparing to work on.

‘EVERYBODY WANTS SOME’ OF NASER!

Naser Mestarihi is a Qatar-born Jordanian-Pakistani singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (guitars, bass & vocals) who is based out of Dubai. Naser is the first rock musician to ever officially release a rock album out of Qatar, the Naser Mestarihi EP and has recently come in 9th position as one of the Best Selling Acts in the U.A.E. In this honest one-on-one with Naser, he talks to us about rejecting the status quo in favour of unique and original music, how he’s fighting a debilitating health

concern and how he keeps his audiences coming back for more!

QUICK QUESTIONS: AC/DC or Metallica?I love both but I'd have to say Metallica. Musically they are much more dynamic and explore a lot more styles within metal/hard rock music.

Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan?Springsteen, I dig The Boss’ style way more!

Drums or Guitar?I actually wanted to be a drummer initially but I’d have to say guitar.

KATY PERRYKaty Perry takes costume galas very seriously it seems. The singer goes all out

in an elaborate Prada gown accentuated with a Tamagotchi toy, theatrical makeup, and a fierce black wig!

The f irst Monday of May in New York is quite the big deal; A-list celebrities f lock to the MET museum on 5th avenue and walk the annual MET gala red carpet in custom-made creations by

the world’s most coveted designers. 2016’s gala was no dif ferent from the others; on the contrary, with a theme entitled “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”, we witnessed a sea of gowns that transported us to the future. ABODE takes a closer look inside the MET ball and

this year’s star-studded event.

This season is all about wearable metallics. New age style isn’t trending right now, it IS the trend. If you aren’t wearing it, you need to go home and

rethink your wardrobe! Loewe embroidered every top and used metallic material in their 2016 Spring/Summer collection, as did Louis Vuitton and Chanel.

It’s the It colour, the go to tone, the be all and end all for spring 2016!

27-Year-old Jordanian/Qatari Jowhara Mohammed a.k.a

‘jay’ has the world at her fingertips. When our editor

discovered her work on instagram, we knew we wanted to

showcase this amazing talent. We finally met and she was

engaged, yet relaxed and very expressive with her hand

movements. This seemed to fit, given these are her master

tools. As we chatted, she recalled her journey through

art and I imagined her at work; gently in a f low, calm and

focused. It soon became clear that Jay represents much

of what qatari youth is all about - discovering your true

passion and potential and transforming it into reality.
