Be thermostat vigilantWhen you leave the house, remember

to lower the thermostat, allowing thehouse to go uncooled while you’reaway. However, be sure to set thethermostat to a temperature that’scomfortable for any pets.The U.S. Dept. of Energy

recommends lowering the thermostat to78 degrees Fahrenheit only when youare at home and need cooling. Thedepartment also aims to the bust themyth that drastically lowering thetemperature, say to 58 degrees, will coolthe house down faster — It will not.Setting the thermostat to an excessivelylow temperature only adds to yourenergy bill. Additionally, lamps and TV sets

should not be placed near thermostatsdue to the fact that thermostats sense

heat from these appliances, which canthen cause AC units to run longer thanintended.For those with a routine schedule, a

programmable thermostat canautomatically change the temperatureduring the times you expect to be out.

Know how best to use your fansBecause fans cool individuals, and

not the space within a home, by creatinga wind chill effect, having them on in anempty room is a waste of energy.Reversely, fans can also save on energycosts when used where they’re neededmost. When combined with air

conditioning, a ceiling fan can allowyou to raise the thermostat about 4degrees Fahrenheit with no reduction incomfort, according to the U.S. Dept. ofEnergy.

Fans should also be used to removeheat and humidity from bathrooms aftera shower, in kitchens after cooking, andin laundry rooms after washing anddrying. Fans can be used for spotventilation throughout the home.

Maintain cooling systems Reading the owner’s manual for your

air conditioner or evaporative cooler isparamount to know how best to operateand maintain the unit.Replacing a dirty or clogged filter

with a clean one can lower your airconditioner's energy consumption by upto 15 percent, according to the U.S.Dept. of Energy. It’s recommended to clean or replace

your cooling system's filter or filtersevery one to two months during thecooling season. However, filters mayneed to be replaced more often if the air

conditioner is in constant use, issubjected to dusty conditions, or youhave fur-bearing pets in the house. To ensure your cooling system is

running at its maximum efficiency,schedule regular maintenance with acertified HVAC technician.

Be aware of the devices that generate heatOnly about 10 percent to 15 percent

of the electricity that incandescent lightsconsume results in light: the rest isturned into heat, according to the U.S.Dept. of Energy. This means that themore lights that are on in the house, thehotter it’s going to be inside. It’s best to install lighting that runs
