April Elder Notes April Elder Notes April Elder Notes April Elder Notes Members: Mark Maybee, Matt Coppess, Paul Maybee(c), Brian Callahan(ac), Scott Weaver, Ray VanZandt,
In attendance tonight: Pastor Cyle Young, Kevin Hamann A. Devotional - Chapter 6 from “The Peacemaker” Confession Brings Freedom (We postponed discussion from the book for this meeting – to resume at next meet-
ing) We took some time to share what God has been saying and showing us indi-vidually. Themes were; trusting in God, reflecting on and learning from our kids who seem to have little or no reluctance to share the gospel with their friends. They should inspire us. There was genuine excitement shared regarding the future at HOTL church and concern for the lives of those in our community who need Christ.
B. PRAYER – The meeting was opened with prayer by Mark C. WELCOME – Pastor Cyle Young! The meeting was handed over to Kevin Hamann (Personnel Team Leader). Cyle
then shared some things from his heart with us. He believes that God has directed him here, and that HOTL is where he is supposed to be. He had some important questions and shared his perspective on a few details regarding the compensation package. There was minimal discussion with some details being clarified. Minor changes were made to the Agreement of Understanding document and then Cyle signed it. A Job Description was circulated and understood to still be a work in pro-gress. Cyle will read through and speak to it at a later date. It was also noted and understood that Cyle has three speaking engagement commitments in 2016 which we will honor, along with the two pre-paid and previously scheduled vacations (July, and December.) At this point we moved to #5 of the agenda’s business section in order to include Kevin Hamann in those discussions. We then thanked Kevin for all of his dedicated work and he exited the meeting.
D. PASTORAL SHARING / SUPPORT:
1. Matt – Matt shared with us about a particular student who has found connection with the youth group and has a better feeling of belonging. Many of the boys from the baseball team he is coaching are coming to Awana, and others are also showing interest and have been invited for the Fall. Matt is planning for a Summer Camp/Youth Group trip to Cedar Point.
E. VISION / MISSION / PURPOSE: Cyle suggested that we meet more often than once a month for a while. We agreed to meet every other week alternating Tues-
days and Thursdays to accommodate everyone. Next two meetings will be Tuesday May 3, and Thursday May 19th.
F. MINISTRY TEAM REPORTS / CONCERNS:
1. CAC - Kevin, Jon, and Jim are still working on a new re-alignment/job description as “Sport Ministry Team.” Jon has asked us to seriously consider installing 4 side-baskets in the gym. This would greatly benefit the Sunday night bible study/open gym guys. Matt said it would really help with the younger boys practices as well. Cyle offered to look into some “at cost” options that he knows of and would coordi-nate with Jon to get some prices for us to review.
2. Property Team – Any new proposals were tabled for tonight in the interest of time, and considering new capital spending with Pastor Cyle.
G. BUSINESS:
1. Approval of Minutes - MSC to accept the minutes from March 19, 2016.
(Mark, Scott) Unanimous
2. Major Expenditure Items – Sign Project - nothing new to report Pastor Cyle has some ideas and strategies with respect to new signage and strategies in the near future.
3. Church Facilities Usage Policy – nothing was presented for discussion at this time.
4. Approval of New Members – MSC to accept Elaine Weaver, Lynn Surber and Vickie Surber into membership at HOTL effective April 17, 2016. (Mark, Matt) Unanimous

Most teens want to embrace Truth. It is a simple concept really.
They really do want to know right from wrong. They want to know in what, and in whom
can they trust. However they are flooded with competing voices and the information age
itself does little to clarify Truth. Instead those competing voices hammer them with lies and
false promises. Whether mere distractions and entertainment, or deliberate deceptions,
our kids and teens have more information to process each day than I had to process in a
year when I was a teen.
So how do we best equip them to sort the good from the bad? How do we best help
them understand God’s Truth and then live it out in their lives at school, work, play and
even at church? We must first help them understand who they truly are. They must know
they are God’s children whom He loves and consistently calls to Him. They must feel like
they belong to His family and they are loved and valued by the Church. This first step in
understanding allows us to impart Truth and even wisdom into their lives.
Doing so this Spring has lead us to directly challenge societies lies about self-identity,
relationships, and even pornography. Using the movie “Divergent” we showed how those
lies try to place us into roles that are not designed by God, but defined by deceitful expecta-
tions. Trusting God to define us is our only real hope of peace and gives us a growing sense
of purpose. Our teens are growing closer to each other and to
Christ. They’re increasingly accepting His call to be “divergent”, in a
good way.
