susceptibility to mosquito bites. Tight-fitting clothing can be bitten through by hungry mosquitoes, while more loose fitting clothing can be more efficacious when it comes to protecting partygoers. Finally, maintaining any areas where water can gather is also an effective means to ward off mosquito attacks. Turn over a dog’s water bowl when not in use or throw sand or dirt in any rain puddles to make the property less attractive to pesky and problematic mosquitoes.

Green Tea Has Beneficial Uses

in the Home Nutritionists have long touted the health benefits of green tea. It’s power-packed with antioxidants, making it a disease fighter and generally healthy brew to enjoy.

But the benefits of green tea do not need to end at tea time. Green tea leaves can be recycled for many other purposes around the home and garden. The “green” in green tea can take on a new connotation when this environmentally friendly product is used in new ways.

The same antioxidant ingredients in green tea are also known for their odor- absorbing abilities. Tea is loaded with catechins — the antioxidant substances. The catechins have antibacterial properties that make tea leaves great for fighting odor. Usually the tea leaves need to be dried before use as a deodorizer. To do so, simply put the wet tea leaves into a strainer and spread out. Press the leaves to remove as much moisture as

possible. Then allow to air dry, turning the leaves over several times in the process.

Pet Beds/Litter Boxes: Sprinkle dried tea leaves onto a pet bed, blanket or pillow. The leaves will help dissipate any foul pet odors. The same technique can be applied with litter boxes. The tea leaves help remove odor and can repel fleas from dogs and cats.

Carpeting: Skip the chemical carpet deodorizer and use dried tea leaves instead. Sprinkle over the carpet, let sit 10 to 15 minutes and then vacuum.

Refrigerator/Kitchen: Put used wet tea leaves or bags in a bowl in the refrigerator to help absorb odors from strong- smelling foods. Wet tea leaves can also be used to rid hands of the smell of garlic or onions after preparation.

Garden: Sprinkle the tea leaves into the garden as a form of mulch and nutrition to

plants.

Cleaning: In some Eastern cultures, a solution of tea is used to disinfect and cleanse things like yoga and sleeping mats. Use tea for deodorizing and cleaning where applicable. Just note that wet tea leaves can stain, so test in an inconspicuous area before using on a large area.

Recycling trees could boost

local economy After Christmas, when people are taking down their ornaments and packing them away, Christmas trees make their way from living rooms to the garbage heap. In recent years, people have realized the benefit to recycling these spruces and firs into compost material. But Christmas trees aren’t the only timber being recycled these days. Many towns and cities are realizing the potential for urban tree recycling at other times during the year.

Many municipalities remove

hundreds of trees from public and private land each year. Utility companies, construction personnel and others also remove trees for various reasons. Some block power lines while others pose safety hazards. In most cases, these cut-down trees end up being sent to the landfill. Some logs are buried, ground up or become a disposal problem. But what if the felled trees could be put to other uses that are a bit more economically friendly and could help those in need earn a profit?

That’s just what Hammond, Indiana’s Lake County Solid Waste Management District Executive Director Jeff Langbehn was thinking when

similar tree recycling programs. Some are municipal- run programs. Others are spearheaded by business-savvy individuals who see a way to profit on waste wood.

The organization Harvesting Urban Timber (HUT) has a Web site that connects people looking for more information on recycling timber. Those with portable sawmills or people with trees can collaborate to find out how to turn waste wood into valuable lumber for business or hobbyists. Not only did the city save on disposal expenses, it saved on purchasing materials for replacement picnic tables and other public area furniture since the “garbage” trees were being recycled into these items.

The concept has since spread beyond Indiana. Many other states have adopted their own

According to Remodeling magazine’s annual “Cost vs. Value Report,” the cost recouped in 2008 of several home improvement projects dipped nearly across the board from the cost recouped in 2007. A master suite addition, for example, with an average cost of more than $220,000, brought in just 61 percent of its value at resale. That’s less than the same project recouped just a year earlier. This is most likely a product of the sagging economy and the high rates of foreclosure throughout the country, which brought home values down and reversed the market from

one benefitting sellers to one more advantageous to buyers. In general, projects that cost less to undertake tended to recoup more money. Among the projects the
