3Management & Bridging Concepts

The VL system features twological parts:

• Management Part:

• Has MAC and IP addresses

• Destination for the management frames

• Never forwards management frames

• Bridging Part:

• Forwards/relays data packets

4

Management & Bridging Concepts

When a frame arrives:

• The frame is examined based on its Destination MAC address

• Where the frame is destined to the Management Part, gets forwarded to it

• Where the frame is destined to a host in the wireless, it is bridged to thewireless link

• There is a bridge aging mechanism

5Management & Bridging Concepts

The decision to forward a frame from the Ethernet port tothe wireless port and vice-versa is based purely on thedestination MAC address

The radio learns and stores the MAC address of allconnected devices (both locally on the Ethernet side andremotely on the wireless side).

In the VL system a frame can be handled by:

• Forwarding

• Relaying

Software Upgrade

If using the CLI, a FTP/TFTP server is required to beinstalled on the PC from which the upgrade is initiated

If using AlvariCRAFT the upgrade is done through SNMP

• Multiple devices can be upgraded simultaneously

The AU/SU holds two firmware versions:

• Main

• Shadow

Page 9: 04 - VL - Management and Maintenance - V6.0 - 200110

17Software Upgrade

Upgrade procedure:

1.Copy the software file to the appropriatefolder in the AlvariCRAFT / AlvariSTAR

2.Transfer the file to the unit (AU/SU/BU/RB)

3.Reboot and run from shadow version

4.Set running version (shadow) as main version.

Managing the Configuration File

The configuration of the VL unit is stored in the FLASH

The file is clear text (it can be edited offline using a regulartext editor)

Two types of operation:

• Backup

• Restore

Two types of configurations:

• Full configuration

• Built in real-time

• File extension: *.cfg

• Operator defaults

• “Save” operation done by the operator

• File extension: *.cm r

The configuration files can be loadedto/from the unit using CLI or SNMP

23Restoring Defaults via CLI

The unit can be reverted to an initial stage of

configuration by performing restore of:• Complete Defaults

• Partial Defaults

The following parameters DO NOT change afterapplying the “Complete/Partial Defaults” resetprocedure:

• Passwords

• Selected Country Code

• Air interface parameters (AU)

• Selected sub-band

• Frequency• DFS required by regulations

• Frequency subset

• Antenna gain

Factory Defaults Reset Application

A special application can beused for the purpose of factorydefaults reset

The utility accesses the unit bysending a special packet

Access to the unit is based onits MAC address, which must be

entered in the “Unit MACaddress” field

Doesn’t reset the SNMPcommunity strings (passwordsfor TELNET)
