Information sessions planned for School No. 8
The Laveen Elementary School District will be
opening their newest school in August 2016. This K-8
school will be located in the Paseo Point community
near 55th Avenue and Dobbins.
Please join us on April 30 to hear about School #8
and see the design. We will be holding two infor-
mation sessions, at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., at the
Laveen Education Center, 5001 W. Dobbins.
Governing Board approves new district logo
The governing board approved a new logo for the Laveen Elementary School District at their April meeting.
Four designs were sent to Laveen staff for voting and comments. The tree design was overwhelmingly the
favorite, taking 65% of the 216 votes.
The district received over one hundred comments, many explaining the symbolism they saw in the tree.
These included: “As educators we plant the seed of knowledge and nurture strong roots of critical thinking and
problem solving. With that nurture they grow strong and reach for the
stars” and “A tree represents so many positive things such as growth,
environment, stability, life!”
The logo is the first step in the district’s rebranding process. Look
for a new tagline and website in the coming months.
Rushlow, Figueroa are February’s Employees of the Month
Employees of the month for February were Ms. Amanda Rushlow, 6th grade teacher at
Cheatham and Mr. Jesus Figueroa, bus driver.
Rushlow was recognized for her work on the selection of the language arts curriculum and set-
ting the pace for its use in the classroom. She changes her teaching style to fit the needs of her stu-
dents. When you walk into her room, you see three different reading classes going on at once. Her
students are leveled off into ability groups and read different passages depending on their levels.
This takes a great amount of planning, but her work pays off. She is always willing to help other
staff members who may be struggling with the new curriculum as well.
Figueroa was recognized for running a “tight ship” as a bus driver serving Cheatham, Vista, and
Laveen Schools. His expectations of his riders are clear and the students respond well to him. He is
always willing to help out and cover a route any time he is needed. In addition to driving, you can
find him assisting the shop with minor repairs such as seat repairs and graffiti removal. Mr.
Figueroa is always in a good mood and brings a ray of sunshine around with him wherever he goes.
