Testimonials

I have known Barry for several years and have raced his pigeons with considerable success. I do believe these pigeons to be of top quality and I would have no hesitation in recommending them to any flyer. I know of other flyers that have had good results this year (2015) with Barry’s pigeons in Melbourne that were purchased at his last auction in 2014. Gary Church VRPU

Colin Cox VRPU flyer has had very good results this year 2015 with stock purchased at Barry’s Melbourne Auction in 2014, Ward Grizzles and Hereman Ceusters.

I first met Barry Devine in 2010 and we have remained friends ever since. I had only started racing pigeons in 2006 and my results were only average. Barry saw that I was keen as mustard but lacked the know how and the pigeons to be competitive. He then started mentoring me by giving me the right advice on how to feed and train my birds in preparation for race day. Barry has since gifted me squeakers from his “top shelf” stock pigeons with the majority being straight bred from his Stichelbauts & Raven Van Loons or a cross of both of these lines. In 2011, I started timing in birds bred by Barry and this became more regular in 2012 and 2013. In 2014 I timed in one of Barry’s Stichelbaut & Raven Van Loon crosses in the first race of the season from Marulan for my best result ever for 1st club, 5th section, 5th Fed in the very strong Central Cumberland Federation with over 300 flyers. Another of Barry’s birds crossed the same way performed well for me as a young bird and I expect he will perform favourably in the 2015 season. I highly recommend Barry’s birds for the most astute racing pigeon fanciers.

Tony Digiorgio.

For the last four years Barry has supplied me with young pigeons to race and every year I have won a race or two with his pigeons. I would have no hesitation in recommending these pigeons in the auction to any keen flyer who wants to win races. I know other flyers have raced Barry’s pigeons with great success.

Anthony Agius.

Snowy Ward Grizzles Would be the oldest strain of pigeons in Australia still racing and winning. The Grizzle Pigeons arrived in Australia in 1919 on a sailing boat from England. Imported by Mr Con Hammond who owned the Camilla Grove Hotel in Alexandria, an inner city suburb, which is still operating today. At some time the Grizzles were taken over by Snowy Ward, who lived in the same area. His home backed onto the railway yards where trains from all over the state came to load up with coal for their return trip back to the country. Many a coal train driver would be gifted a pair of Grizzles and they virtually ended up all over Australia. They became known as the Snowy Ward Grizzles & they have raced now for almost 100 years in Australia. They were a successful, reliable race pigeon then & still are today! No trouble flying the 600 & 700 miles. Kevin Boyce, a very young boy at the time became the loft boy for Snowy and for many years raced as Ward and Boyce. There were bronze pigeons that came out of the Grizzle and it is a known fact that well known flyer Bill McLean was a good friend of Snowy’s and he took the bronze pigeons and that was how the Bronze McLean pigeons developed. The grizzle pigeons are responsible for over nine known National winners, 3 x 1st Union National winners, many 600 mile Combine winners and were responsible for most Club averages winners with over 60 flyers in each club in the sixties. The Snowy Ward & Boyce Grizzle in 2014 It has taken me over fifteen years to put the Grizzles together and many thousands of dollars. I have only kept the best and I would have the best collection of the Ward & Boyce grizzles available in Australia today!

I have sold them all over Australia and they have bred winners in every state. Flyers keep telling me that you cannot lose them and on many occasion they will race

every week and make an excellent cross with all breeds. The checkers & Blue Bars off the Grizzles are just as good. I could write many pages about the winners that get reported to me, but time and space does not allow me.

One of my Grizzles that I sold and repurchased back, who has bred winners and sire of producers in Sydney. He is known as the IRON DUKE AUST 06.12458, a very dark

chequered Grizzle, his young will be in the auction. His children & grand children raced every race from Sydney to Bourke and took 1st and two 2nds in the last three long races for Bob Applebee. Also winning all the pools in the CCF National $1500. Keith Wrightson also did very well with my Grizzles acquired through a second source.

These two old time flyers don’t go in for the new breeds from Europe and when these Grizzles can go to the USA and win against the best, it makes you think.

The IRON DUKE is the short name for the Duke of Wellington, a famous General, who defeated Napoleon at The Battle of Waterloo & was twice Prime Minister of England. The Staff Van Reets. The Staff Van Reets on offer are the same as the ones that were sold for $95,000 at Andrew Carrington Clearance Auction 3 years ago in Sydney. Andrew’s testimony: “winning is easy when you have good pigeons”. One Staff cock in my pedigree ring number BELG 2000.6517657 sold for $3,500. His half-brother the replacement cock, ring number BELG 2001.6524723 sold for $7,000. His sire BELG 1989.6611641, dame BELG 99.6555734 all these Staffs shown in my pedigree. These Staffs are becoming very hard to acquire nowadays. There are numerous winners recorded from these pigeons. Ken Tucker Rockhampton flyer won the last Mallee Classic $10,000 also won Champion Ace Bird & Champion Overall Ace Bird are bred from a pigeon purchased from me, off the very same pigeons that are in this auction. I am also breeding off a son of the original pair and a staff hen AUST 10.20148 raced in Taree one loft race came home late only had ¾ of feathers in her wing. I considered her a very good hen. Her sire was a Kevin Hayden Staff MAS 04.638, they were known as Producers 7210 whom Tom Wills purchased the originals. These were extremely good in Sydney and the progeny sold for big dollars at Tom Wills auctions. If you like Staffs like I do, you must have a look at these! I should mention that Graham Davidson won Parkes One

Loft Race a couple of years ago with a Staff same as these, which tells me that they will race in the country as well as the city. Florengle My Florengles are mainly off the Lu Bros of the De Dikke cock, White tail & Bullet. De Dikke National Winner. 1st Chateauroux 13,285 birds. 10th National Bourges 9,759 birds. 2nd Prov Chateauroux 1,848 birds. The mother of my Florengle AUST 06.4405 bred 4 x 1st Federation winners, 2 x 2nd and 1 x 6th Feds and many club wins in NSW. The sire BCP VHA 10.11691. Grandson of the Bullet & White Tail. The Stichelbaut Pigeons Only about 4 possibly, 6 Stichelbaut were imported into Australia in the late nineties. They were down off National Winners and were kept in a farmers loft in Victoria for a period of time, until Laurie Dennis obtained all the imports. Laurie sent the young to various lofts in Victoria, NSW & Queensland. Every pigeon that went out to race either won or breed winners from the start to the last race 600 mile John Goodwin WPF Flyer. Won many races with one pigeon up to 600 miles timed in 12 times, and then went on to breed two fed winners in 2011. There have been over 8 occasions where these Stichelbauts have won at 400, 500 & 600 mile from pigeons sent out from Laurie Dennis’ loft to race. The best producers were Mealy Cock AUST 01.20997 & BB Pied hen VRPV 03.13756, both off the imports. Another cock was a Strawberry Mealy Cock Rung TAM 05.258. He is the grand sire of my hen BLUE CAVIAR won 5th prize in the Gold Coast 50,000 2013 & is the sire of my 19th prize in the Adelaide 10,000 2013. Dame: a David Cunningham Goodger. The history of the Alois Stichelbaut Pigeons The emergence of the Stichelbaut strain first came into existence in 1922 when Alois Stichelbaut bought two pigeons from the loft of a deceased friend, Alfons Derumeaux. It would be well to keep the name Derumeaux in mind because it is often mentioned in the formation of Belgian lofts of a very high calibre. Only about six other pigeons were introduced. Never has a pigeon strain been more in the limelight than the Stichelbaut strain. This is easily explained by the fact that after the death of Alois Stichelbaut many great Belgian and foreign champions have had wonderful results with this outstanding strain, especially when it came to the 500 to 700 mile distances. Selecting at random we mention the following celebrities who have been at the top with the Stichelbaut strain. Michel Descamps ~ Van Hasten ~ Gerard Vanhee ~ Rodger Vireecke ~ Leopold Boslyn ~ Marcel Desmet ~ Dewert. The above list is incomplete as the Stichelbauts went everywhere. Many present day lofts have to thank their lucky stars for these particular Stichelbaut birds. (The Black Raven Loon was off a black Stichelbaut hen). Many fanciers ask where does the red checker Stichelbaut come from? Alois Stichelbaut’s main pigeon was a strawberry Mealy cock, ring BELG 34.3236983. The only red in the team he was known as De Goede Bleken (meaning in English “The Good Mealy Cock”). Raced from 1936 til 1939 until Germany occupied Belgium. He won 25 prizes and won all the pools on 6 occasions. He was Alois’ favourite pigeon and was described as an outstanding pigeon. On two occasions he won the title of Long Distance Champion of West Flanders. I have a photo of this cock & he is identical to my main Stichelbaut 258. Alois only kept about four pigeons hidden during the war. There is a lot more to be written about, but space does not allow. Alois Stichelbaut’s final auction on 27th January 1946 at 3.30pm in the city of Kortrijk.

There were 15 cocks & 11 hens, realising 145,000 francs. The Oude Bleken cock (Good Mealy) was Lot 1 and the only red, but was the sire of a fair percentage of the auction pigeons, mainly Black checkers & Blue Bars. He was 13 years old when sold and still fertile! Interestingly, I noted there were no young reds in the auction of this cock. Where did they go? Or should I say, who got them???

The Gabby VandenbeelesOriginally from Jack Vanderlinden and two hens from Laurie Dennis. WITTENBUIK STAR

features in both pigeons. Most flyers know the value of the Gabbys. The same Gabby Vandenbeeles were in Mal Coulson Auction are the same as the ones I have in this auction.

Raven Van LoonsThe Raven Van Loons are my choice of the Van Loons in my opinion. They have won

Nationals in Australia and will go the distance and are an excellent cross to most breeds. I don’t believe there are better Van Loons than the Raven Van Loons. My foundation cock AUST 08 13763 is Grandsire of BLUE CAVIAR & IRISH PRIDE on their father’s side. Stichelbaut on their mother’s side.

The Stichelbaut PigeonsThe big advantage about Stichelbauts is they excel on very hard days and easterly winds.

Graham Davidson SCF still holds the record for Bundaberg to the SCF Fed over 650 miles on the day. With a Stichelbaut they will fly 700 miles. My BLUE CAVIAR & my Adelaide prize winner were half Stichelbauts and they survived some very hard lead up races. Even though Stichelbaut sold out in 1946, these pigeons are still very much in demand in England & Europe today. Fetching big money to purchase them, the Bass Pigeons for the Raw Sablons are Stichelbauts. IRISH PRIDE’S mother is a Stichelbaut.

Very determined pigeons with a will to keep going when the going gets tough. A must to havein every loft in my opinion. It does not matter how much you feed them, they don’t put on weight. When they are in racing condition will fly their heart out to get back to the loft. Keep in mind IRISH PRIDE only had 9 flight feathers in one wing, that is why she was slow on the landing board, her wing must have been very sore._________________________________________________________Lot 1.
