New Surface Tolerant Technology solves Maintenance DilemmaA UK oil supplier was faced with a major dilemma when a transformer oil storage tank began to leak in several places. As the tank was located in a confined space, it would be highly dangerous to repair the damage in-situ using hot work. If the tank was removed and repaired offsite, not only would this incur large amounts of downtime, but the cost of welding alone would be over £15,000.

The supplier required a bespoke in-situ repair solution that would safely repair and protect the steel tanks against corrosive attack for the long-term, whilst incurring minimum downtime. In addition to this, as the application area was highly contaminated with oil, the repair method needed to be

compatible with this environment and provide a robust repair solution despite the contaminated surface.

Belzona 1212 was chosen to bond steel plates to the damaged areas followed by a protective coating using Belzona 5831 (ST-Barrier). Launched earlier this year, Belzona

1212 represents a milestone for epoxy technology as not only does this material provide excellent, long-term corrosion resistance, but it achieves this even when applied to oil contaminated surfaces where grit blasting is not possible. Coupled with the rapid cure feature ensuring minimal downtime, Belzona 1212 is the ideal solution to repair the leaking tank. Belzona 5831 was chosen to coat the repaired area as this surface tolerant epoxy coating is specially designed for the protection of oil contaminated surfaces.

Quality manufacturing since 1810London Name Plate brought their exhibition stand to Manchester for the first time this year and were inundated with requests for information, samples, support and solutions to a widely varied audience at the Northern Manufacturing & Electronics Exhibition 2015.

Variable data labelling in the form of barcodes, data matrices and serial numbers are becoming more prevalent within all industries and we are pleased to have been able to offer support in this key area.

It was fantastic to be approached by many groups of engineering students from many local schools, colleges and universities in regards to our products. These students are the future of engineering in the UK and we were very pleased to have been able to discuss at length the many labelling options available from London Name Plate and the science behind some of them too.

London Name Plate have a broad spectrum of customers we work with and are currently as diverse as an executive branding company to a model railway control box designer, from an exclusive housing developer to a bus sign manufacturer and many different customers in between.

London Name Plate consider themselves to be a solutions company in regards to brand labelling or information displaying requirements. It’s rare that we turn down a project and look forward to working with prospective customers, from a sole trader to a multi-national conglomerate.

London Name Plate will be returning to Manchester next year and will also be attending the Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2016 exhibition in February at Farnborough again.

Extractability’s new portable Fume Extractor ‘ProtectoTwin’ out nowExtractability, a division of Weldability-Sif, is a UK based ‘one stop source’ for all welding fume extraction solutions. The company has launched the new ProtectoTwin unit, a twin high-pressure turbine with infinitely adjustable speed control that is specifically designed to extract and filter metal particulate fumes created in welding processes.

The ProtectoTwin is highly portable, weighing only 25kg, and is supplied on swivel castors. Combined with its small dimensions (300mm x 300mm x 670mm), these mean that it is easily manoeuvrable and so suitable for a number of applications. These include small fabrication shops, single welding bays with on-torch fume extraction and maintenance welding.

The unit is supplied with a 2.5m

hose and magnetic foot welding nozzle, and is fitted with a BIA M filter cartridge that filters hazardous substances to with more than 99% efficiency. What’s more, dual ports facilitate local extraction via hood and torch extraction from a single unit.

The filter is automatically cleaned with compressed air, providing a long filter life. The particles are collected in a dust collection drawer and can be easily removed from the unit.

The ProtectoTwin operates from a 230v mains input supply, and works with a full 1.6kw of motor power. Despite this, with the nozzle installed the noise level reaches only 70dB(A).

Packaging Solution SpecialistsBest Practice is incredibly pleased to feature JJA Pack and congratulate its team upon receiving its incredibly prestigious Packaging Solutions Company of the Year profile.

The Barnsley-based business has over 10 years of refined experience in the build, installation and maintenance of contemporary filling and packaging machines, securing its status as a well appreciated frontrunner in a variety of industries. It was originally focused on facilitating the needs of dairies with its dependable machinery and associated services, but it has since diversified its competencies to include the build, installation and maintenance of contemporary filling and packaging machines, the delivery of PLC upgrades, hardware upgrades/software modifications and the supply & servicing of various types of chocolate equipment.

“From such humble beginnings, we have managed to continually develop and achieve worldwide respect,” commented Jamie Ashpole, Founder and Director of JJA Pack. “Ever since forming our business, we have

grown year after year, and the past twelve months have been no exception. We have exceeded what we wanted to achieve in terms of profit but in all honesty it isn’t all about the sales for us – we prefer to pride ourselves on our reputation instead. By focusing on providing the best (and most reliable) possible service to our customers, we understand that the growth will come with that. The aim is to continue progressing and increasing our customer base whilst working on developing our own equipment range where we can.

“We are currently in the process of working on some really interesting projects which we are looking forward to sharing with you all in the near future. I wish I could disclose the details because the concepts are truly

phenomenal, but unfortunately I’m not at liberty to do so, due to the fact we are bound momentarily by the restrictions of stringent contract agreements.”

One deal that can be discussed is one of immense magnitudes – just last year, JJA Pack excitingly managed to secure a deal with the much loved confectionary giant Cadbury World. This opportunistic venture involved the design and implementation of a commissioned conveyor belt, operating solely to allow every visitor passing through the tourist attraction to receive a cup of liquidised Dairy Milk chocolate in a dispensed paper cup ejected from the rotating system. Another recent partnership includes a liaison with FoodJet Printing Systems – a company in Holland that works with flowable products – which saw JJA Pack supply machinery on their behalf as their exclusive UK sales agent.

The company can produce equipment that is able to deposit almost any flowable product ( jams, jellies, cream, chocolate and water, for example) with great

ease and efficiency. Manufacturing machinery in alignment with individual specifications ensures that all clients will be satisfactorily dealt with, receiving designs unique to their applications which will be guaranteed to optimise conditions within the working environment.

“If you were to compare us to our competitors – organisations which are larger in size – we have a distinct advantage,” Jamie continued. “Bigger manufacturers are more restricted, as they are limited by corporate loopholes, so we have greater flexibility (as we are not tied to one specific product range or solution). Imagination is our asset: if the customer can imagine it, we can work with it and turn it into a working model.

“We take the time to listen to all of our customers, and we only take on jobs which we know we can manage capably and can complete to the set timescale. The company philosophy and the success of how we operate is based simply upon the promise to do what we say, when we say. We have developed numerous working relationships as a result of our exemplary abilities, with the majority of new contacts coming through recommendations. Maintaining such a good competitive service is very much an on-going priority for all of us here.”

The JJA Pack team enjoyed a fantastic reception after appearing at the Pro2Pac Show 2015 – the only food and drink packaging event held in the UK – earlier this year. They were notably announced as one of the Top 10 Exhibitors after attending – such success has prompted the group into confirming their space at the next edition of the show, which will take place in London from 19-22 March 2017.

Xylem presents three new instruments at Lab Innovations 2015Xylem’s theme at this year’s Lab Innovations, the UK’s primary laboratory show held recently in Birmingham, was instrumentation that brings convenience to the lab.

Three new products were launched by key brands, Bellingham + Stanley (UK), SI Analytics, (Germany) and WTW (Germany).

Celebrating its Centenary this year, Bellingham + Stanley unveiled the latest in a long line of precision refractometers, instruments used to control the concentration and purity products including soft drinks, confectionery and pharmaceutical raw materials. The new RFM900-T Series refractometer has a touchscreen display and is capable of measuring to 6 decimal places RI over a range 1.30-1.70, making it particularly ideal for use within the pharmaceutical, chemical, petrochemical, flavours and fragrance industries.

Refractometers are often found alongside titrators in many quality control laboratories and it was

the new TitroLine® 7800 titrator featuring IDS sensor recognition technology that together with the photoLab® 7600 featured in two Live Lab demonstrations of how the instruments help save valuable laboratory time. “IDS Technology stores the calibration data in the pH or conductivity electrode that form part of the titrator,” said Philp Bellhouse,

Xylem presenter at the Live Lab. “This saves valuable time when exchanging electrodes as the operator does not have to perform a calibration routine every time an electrode is changed,” he continued. “Additionally, conductivity meters can be directly connected to the new titrator and they also have the unique ability to accept analogue inputs of pH, ORP, Cond. & DO.”

Darren Hanson, the second presenter and product specialist from Xylem Analytics then went on to explain how the latest photoLab spectrophotometer was able to measure COD, nitrates and nitrites in wastewater without the need to use reagents; reducing the overall cost per measurement especially when considering the reduced burden of environmentally friendly chemical disposal.

Envair Laboratory Equipment adds new strength to Envair LtdRecent years have seen a number of key players in the clean air and containment industry falter under the stress of economic change. Global players have found the subsequent adjustment in customer buying patterns and preferences hard to react to, leaving an opportunity for smaller dynamic businesses, offering customer focused solutions supported by dedicated service, an opportunity to thrive.

Envair Ltd took the decision to establish Envair Laboratory Equipment in July 2014 based upon the success of sister company, Germany based Envair Deutschland. With an industry renowned team offering decades of experience, Envair Lab has set the bar high with a pre-sales service which encourages users to make product choices based upon application and industry regulation. With an expanding field team of 10 engineers, post-sales service and ongoing maintenance is also a key factor in Envair Lab's proposition.

Sensors & Measurement News

Tradition, innovation & continuity – a unique combinationOriginally established in 1919 as Foundrometers Ltd, the well-regarded business has specialised in the manufacture, supply and repair of mechanical and electrical instruments for the measurement of rotational movement since then.

In 1980, Foundrometers took over the instrument division of Harding of Leeds and subsequently secured its position as a globally recognised leader in the industry. For more than 10 years now, Foundrometers Instrumentation, now called RHEINTACHO UK Ltd. since 2014, has been a subsidiary of the German company RHEINTACHO Messtechnik GmbH.

The Leeds-based manufacturer was set up with the principle purpose of providing a vast array of customers with an unparalleled level of service and quality surrounding rotational speed instrumentation. Its extensive inventory of products ranges from mechanical & electrical tachometers to handheld tachometers, portable & fixed stroboscopes and speed sensors.

The company is firmly placed in the measurement sector, but its testing capabilities are utilised in many industries, from shipbuilding to printing and production machinery. Its main customers are distributers and OEMs located in the UK or abroad in Europe and the US, and many of its esteemed clients appreciate the fact that the company is one of the very few offering spares and repairs services professionally.

“What makes us stand out from competitors is our high level of quality, our flexibility and speed in connection with delivery reliability and spare parts or repairs,” Paul Hargraves, Director of RHEINTACHO UK, said. “In addition, our parent company is specialised in sensor technology as a complement technology to our mechanical and electrical products.”

The business’s renowned commitment to providing complete customer satisfaction extends to flexibility in terms of its S&R services (spares and repairs), as RHEINTACHO UK is willing to fix not only their own products, but also their competitors.’ Even instruments from closed companies can be repaired, regardless of how old they may be. If not, they will find an alternative solution.

RHEINTACHO UK work under the influence of economic, human and socially focused responsibility. “Our mission is to be successful, but to stay human at the same time,” Paul explained. “We operate having acquired a Corporate and Social Responsibility Code of

Conduct (ZVEI), and we want to be a leader in efficiency, innovation and quality while running a business focussed on a fair partnership with our customers and suppliers alike.”

The company places a direct emphasis on product development and further progression, prioritising innovation and efficiency alongside high value and effective customisation. The most recent addition to the RHEINTACHO UK product portfolio is the ATEX version of the handheld mechanical tachometer (HTM). Both versions of its HTM and the product families of stroboscopes coming from its parent company have definitely been selling best since a year ago.

When discussing the company’s recent performance, Paul said, “The last twelve months have seen a massive restructuring process focussing on process optimization in technical and administrative matters aimed at improving customer satisfaction and the effectiveness of all efforts within the organisation.

“Due to closer integration within the organisational structures of our German parent company, RHEINTACHO Messtechnik GmbH, located in Freiburg, the capital of the Black Forest, we now receive very professional support in nearly every department of our company. In addition, we have been provided with the services of a business consultant, William Buhler, who first concentrated on controlling and KPIs. Now, this support is being experienced in marketing and sales activities.”

It hasn’t all been smooth-sailing, though, “2014 was a difficult year for RHEINTACHO UK,” Paul admitted. “However, since the beginning of 2015, we have surely been experiencing a strong recovery and by far will surpass our good year in 2013 this year. For several reasons, we are well-positioned for the future.

“In comparison to last year, sales are up by approx 50% and in comparison to forecast we are more than on track. We have been able to enlarge our customer base and reactivate several older customers, and our own product lines are complemented with

products we sell for our parent company.”

The future is set to be promising for RHEINTACHO UK, who will be focusing specifically on enlarging its portfolio and securing more jobs in the UK in 2015 and beyond. There are many developments in the pipeline for the notable supplier, who will be receiving further product families from RHEINTACHO Messtechnik GmbH throughout the course of the next few years.

“Our plans are to grow with sustainable development and to eventually provide new job opportunities within the next 5 years,” Paul explained. “On a medium to long-term basis, we must also focus on satisfying our parent company. We are going to continue building and expanding our business with renowned global distributors and sales organisations in all relevant product markets.

“There will be another product transfer from Germany to Micklefield, based on additional capacity resulting from our lean projects and out proven experience in the manufacture and assembly of measuring instruments. In autumn, 2 staff members will again be visiting Germany to be trained for the project. We are also continuously investigating growth opportunities together with Germany ranging from newly transferred products to potential acquisitions.”

Healthcare Sterilisation News

Less than 1 CFU/m3 in a crowded operating theatre, during a real surgery

Have you ever tried to open your preferred web search engine, type keywords such as ‘hospital acquired infections,’ ‘surgical site infections,’ ‘HAI survey’ and then press ‘Enter’? If you have, you know the tremendous impact these infections have on the healthcare system, even now in the 21st century, in terms of longer hospitalization, stress to the patients, direct and indirect costs and causes of death.

At the same time, the current trend worldwide is to reduce the number of beds in hospitals, despite the continuous growth of population and the longer expectations of life. It is easy to understand that the only way to achieve this goal is to reduce as much as possible the days’ stay in hospital.

Among all the enclosed workplaces in healthcare premises, the operating room is one of the most critical for the risk of acquiring infections.

Ventilation plays a primary role, in making an operating room a safe place to stay and to work. Some of the main reasons for ventilation in operating theatres are: supply of the required fresh air, thermal comfort, humidity control, proper dilution of airborne pathogenic substances and their extraction from the room.

Since we are keen in ventilation and air

filtration and we are fully aware of the importance of air quality, we devoted big efforts in developing a unique system for air filtration and air diffusion in operating rooms, our DIF.OT, mainly for critical surgeries where ultra-clean ventilation is needed.

Compared to other so called laminar systems, our DIF.OT is definitely unconventional. Whereas other solutions just debate about the right air velocity that, more, often than not, could be too low to be effective or too high to avoid the risk of undesirable turbulence, DIF.OT

simply supplies three different air velocities, to give the very best airflow wherever it is required, thanks to a decreasing air velocity from the centre to the edges of the canopy.

Looking at a section of an operational theatre using this kind of air diffusion, it is possible to see the unique air flow pattern.

The highest velocity is right over the process core, keeping this area in overpressure to protect the patient; a lower velocity is flowing in the surrounding clean area, mainly where the medical and nursing staff are, to dilute the concentration of contaminants pushing them far from the surgical table and avoiding any draft or discomfort.

Finally, from the outer ring the air velocity is low enough to avoid any polluted air induction from the upper part of the room.

The following images, coming from a CFD simulation of the air movement in a cardiac surgery room previously tested, clearly highlight the advantages of the three velocities:

A critical issue in both new and refurbished operating rooms is their final testing and validation procedure.

Very often, this extremely important process is just turned into a particle-counting test to verify the ISO class and, even worse, the room is tested ‘at-rest,’ without any person inside.

On the contrary, it must bear in mind that occupants play a major role in operating theatres, from the initial design stage when the maximum crowding has to be considered for a proper airflow dimension, to the final testing where they make a big difference between a wrong simulation and the reality.

We carried out many different tests during the development of our system but the ones that really make us proud, are the ones taken in ‘operational’ mode by validation companies.

A very interesting example of this kind of validation came from a hybrid room in Sweden.

We studied the feasibility of this project with the consultant company jointly and, collecting all the information, we suggested the right air flow volume to have an ISO 5 classroom, with maximum 5 CFU/m3 and a maximum crowding of

10 people in the room at the same time.

Given this value, we also proposed the right size of the air filtration and diffusion ceiling, along with the proper three air velocities to protect the critical area and to keep the patients in local overpressure, pushing all the potentially harmful pollution far from the surgical table.

After the first round of tests to verify the correct installation of the ventilation system, the room overpressure, the plenum air tightness and the absence of leakage in the HEPA filters’ frames, a full test in operational was carried out. Here below are its main steps and the result:

■ Test started at 7.23AM and finished at 12.50PM. Incision started at 8.30AM and suturing at 12.30PM

■ Air sampling positions were decided together with the surgical team

■ Particle counting (0.5 μm and 5 μm particle size), overpressure and microorganism concentration (using an air sampler with tryptosoyagar plates with sampling air flow 100 l/min) were tested.

■ Each step of the test lasted 10 minutes. During each step, also the crowding and the number of door openings were recorded.

■ The maximum crowding was 8 people and the maximum number of door openings in a ten minute timeframe was 6.

■ In total 13 CFUs were counted during the test, giving a final concentration far below 1/m3.

The same testing procedures were followed also in other OTs, where DIF.OT was installed, and the result was the same: mission fully accomplished.

The secret of this success? We simply try to work with the team responsible for the ventilation system design, giving our best advice and, even more importantly, we always do that with Passion, Expertise and Reliability since more than 50 years.

1) The clean air from the centre effectively protect the patients

3) The lowest velocity avoids any risk of contaminated air induction from the room to the clean area

2) In the area where the staff is working the air velocity is low enough to avoid discomfort

This process takes precious seconds that the user may not have.

The strength of Loner Duo lies in its ability to be worn by the employee. Maintaining a Bluetooth connection to his or her nearby smartphone, the user is provided with physical interface, allowing a help request to be triggered near instantly.

The Flood Expo Review

Permegrid PG40 gravel and grass paversPermegrid PG40 permeable paving grids can be installed with either a gravel or grass filled surface and allow full rainwater penetration. Manufactured from UV stabilised 100% British recycled Polyethylene, in black or green. Our pavers are strong, chemically inert and non-toxic, enabling them to provide a durable, safe and sustainable eco-friendly surface for trafficked areas.

Permegrid PG40 grids have been designed to meet the demands laid down by local Government regarding flood alleviation and SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) requirements, therefore can be used as part of a source control layer within a SUDS design.

Permegrid PG40 pavers are a cost-effective solution to worn and rutted grassed areas, displaced gravel and for Source Control of surface water run-off. Our paving grids are designed to be installed onto a well prepared, free-draining and relatively even surface using either a ‘Reduced-Dig

System’ or by employing a full sub-base construction incorporating a geotextile reinforcement layer.

Our permeable paving grids simply connect together and are filled with angular gravel for use as a gravel retention reinforcement permeable surface. Construction profiles for each application will be determined by the specific site conditions and loading criteria.

Water Testing Equipment and Water Analysis DevicesFlooding is a continuous threat for many people in the UK, there is little we can do to stop it but we can be prepared. Flooding can happen in a matter of minutes, with whole communities being flooded in as little as an hour, anything that can buy you some extra time can to move your valuables and protect your assets can be a huge advantage.

That is exactly what the LeveLine-EWS system from Aquaread is designed to do. The EWS or Early Warning System can provide you with real time text message alerts as flood waters are rising, whatever time of day, giving you that extra time to deploy your defenses or move your goods.

The system works by placing a sensor in the water, for example a river running through a local community, which is connected

to a telemetry device. The system records the water level frequently. During its deployment, we can setup alert levels so that when the sensor detects that the water has risen, it will send out SMS messages to all people in its contacts list warning them of the rising levels.

Steelcase Research reveals workplaces not designed for BrainsOffice workers are being overwhelmed by distractions – due mainly to a lack of understanding of how to manage attention in the workplace.

This is the major finding of the latest Steelcase research, a meta-analysis of neuroscience and cognitive studies. The study integrates discoveries from neuroscience experts with the Steelcase’s own ongoing investigations into workers’ behaviours and the changing nature of work.

The research findings have major significance for UK businesses. Due to high real-estate costs, especially in London, the United Kingdom has become a champion of offices with non-assigned workstations in open

spaces. However, workplaces tend to be very crowded.

Workers in the UK remain relatively engaged despite clear dissatisfaction with most aspects of their workplaces. Engaged workers are more productive, however in the UK workers lag behind global averages when it comes to concentrating easily at work, feeling relaxed and calm, working in teams without being interrupted or disrupted and

having the ability to choose where to work on tasks within the office.

Findings from the latest research reveal the brain has finite energy capacity, and uses 20% of the body’s energy. This makes it physiologically impossible for anyone to engage in eight straight hours of controlled, or focused, attention and meet any quality or quantity outputs. Attention has a natural rhythm throughout the day.

Steelcase researchers and designers have identified three brain modes that each requires distinct behaviours and settings. Balancing these settings throughout the day can help workers better manage the ebb and flow of their attention.

Guardian24’s Personal Safety Smartphone AppGuardian24, the leading lone worker protection solution for the UK and Ireland, are working with Northern Ireland based charity, Niamh (the Northern Ireland Association for Mental Health), to protect their lone working support workers. By equipping them with Guardian24’s smartphone safety application, Niamh’s staff can quickly and discreetly call for help in the event of any emergency.

Niamh is the largest and longest established independent charity focusing on mental health and wellbeing services in Northern Ireland. At the core of Niamh’s services is the community-based support it provides to people who have had experience of mental illness. Niamh recognise that supporting people within supported housing and the community is both rewarding and, often, challenging.

According to a recent report, nationally, nine out of ten social workers have suffered verbal and physical abuse whilst working. Niamh already have robust risk policies, procedures and training in place for practicing safe lone working, but equipping staff with a mobile-based means of raising an alarm in the event of an emergency was agreed to be a necessary requirement as an additional level of support.

Thorite provides pneumatic power for innovative shoulder joint testing rigReverse shoulder joint replacement is an increasingly common surgical intervention. However there are concerns in relation to such joint replacement, while novel designs of reverse shoulder prostheses continue to appear on the market. Many claim to offer improvements over older designs but such assertions are difficult to validate when there is no agreement as to how such implants should be tested in the laboratory – or even if such testing is necessary.

In order to permit appropriate laboratory testing of all types of reverse shoulder prostheses a unique, multi-station test rig has been designed by

Dr Simon Smith and built under the direction of Professor Tom Joyce in the School Of Mechanical and Systems Engineering at Newcastle University, with help from the North Shields Sales & Service Centre of Thorite, the UK’s biggest distributor of pneumatic products & process systems.

The new test rig is capable of applying motion in three axes to test prostheses. Known as The Newcastle Shoulder Wear Simulator, it uses three Thorite-supplied Norgren pneumatic cylinders with integral position encoders to move five prosthetic shoulder joint units simultaneously in the flexion-extension, abduction-adduction (arm raising and lowering) and internal-external rotation axes.

Renold Couplings’ Hi-Tec range now available ‘off the shelf ’Renold Couplings’ Hi-Tec range of pilot bored RB rubber-in-compression couplings, are now available ‘off the shelf.’

Used across a variety of production industries, the Hi-Tec RB coupling transmits torque using compressed rubber elements to dampen vibration and eliminate backlash. This results in the efficient operation of the drive train, while removing the risk of failure and the consequential risk to health and safety.

Nigel MacVean, Managing Director of Renold Couplings commented, “A reliable coupling is critical to any production line

and coupling failure will prove costly in terms of downtime and loss of production. To have a high quality, replacement coupling available ‘off the shelf’ is a huge reassurance and

Renold Couplings are delighted to be able to meet that demand.”

The Hi-Tec RB ranges are universal sizes and can replace couplings by most manufacturers.

Alan Dean, Business Development Director added “This is also good news for anyone who has planned maintenance scheduled in over the Christmas shutdown, because we can have a coupling with you in time for this.”

Anyone requiring a quote for an RB coupling should contact Renold Couplings on: +44 (0)1422 255000 or visit: www.renold.com

We can all do our bit to help with climate change very easily. We are all guilty of being wasteful and not appreciating what we have.

It is very important that we make as much use of the 15 million tons annually in the UK of unsold and out of date food going to waste. A lot of this perfectly good food currently goes to Anaerobic Digesters or composting which costs approx. £60 per ton or even worse landfill which attracts £80 per ton tax. We can operate at half of this.

At Waste Food Solutions, we have developed the Super Separator, which depackages food, be it

confectionery, fruit, veg, dairy products, in fact almost everything in any type of packaging. Recently we accepted a consignment that we thought would beat us – 44 tons of individually shrink wrapped cucumbers, the Super Separator excelled itself by sending the

wrappers out ready to go to polymer recycling and the diced cucumber ready to go to feed the animals.

We have now developed another machine which is able to empty jars, glass bottles and tins. Again the food goes to farming, the glass, lids and tins back to the relevant industries, giving a 99% recycling rate.

Along with your help of food supplies, Waste Food Solutions are now in a position to open up processing plants nationwide.

Leading Manufacturer Showcases its new Product Lines at ADIPEC 2015Elfab, Europe’s leading manufacturer of rupture discs, proved to be a great success whilst exhibiting at ADIPEC 2015 along with its UAE partner, Safe Technical Supply Co. L.LC.

Attending the show for the fourth consecutive year was a wise decision for the industry specialists, who appeared at the world’s most inspirational and renowned convention and conference for the oil & gas sector specifically to showcase their newest product line; the WirelessHART™ burst detection system.

ADIPEC is the established place to be for all professionals in oil and gas and acts as the perfect platform for organisations to effectively display their latest developments. Understanding the impacting downturn in the sector and combatting this with its cost-effective products is one of the reasons Elfab was selected as a superior brand.

Elfab’s rupture disc burst detection systems Flo-Tel™ and Flo-Tel™ XD have already been extensively employed across companies globally actively searching for failsafe solutions. This particular product evoked interest from visitors at the show due to the fact it has been enhanced further in order for it to work

cohesively alongside Emerson’s WirelessHART Gateway, diminishing the requirement for expensive wiring integrations on both new builds and on plant upgrades. Customers can expect to eliminate the costs and complexity of additional wiring by saving an estimated 50% of the cost and 90% of the time required to install a conventional wired burst detector.

Around 85,000 attendees from across the globe turned up to explore the innovations presented at the esteemed event, further signifying the immense achievement of being chosen as a standout exhibitor.

Zizo – Logistics soundbiteWhy is the logistics market still focusing solely on revenue? The logistics and delivery sector is a highly competitive marketplace. Each business operates on very small margins, and the winners are those organisations which best understand their costs and drive their customers to sign up for longer term contracts at profitable levels. So why is this happening in so few organisations?

The simple answer is that it is difficult. However, with the processing power of next generation analytics platforms, every organisation, regardless of size, has

the ability to break down the costs of the business every month to

actual parcel level. These platforms have been designed not only to manage vast data quantities but also deliver insight as a complete service, reducing costs and improving efficiency.

For example, once an organisation knows how much a parcel costs to deliver, how much it costs to service a customer and how profitable a particular delivery route is, it is able to make more precise decisions.

Coca-Cola speeds up loading process thanks to Zetes scanning system on forkliftsIn order to gear the loading process to the accelerated warehouse processes, Zetes designed a new scanning system on Coca-Cola's forklifts in Dongen. Zetes also advised on the design of the forklift attachments together with the company Durwen. Coca-Cola has since reduced loading time by an impressive 6 minutes per lorry, whilst also improving safety and reducing the number of errors.

Coca-Cola’s production plant in the Netherlands (Dongen) supplies the distribution centres of large supermarket chains, retail and catering businesses across the country. The company produces 6 days out of 7, 24 hours per day, in teams of 20 employees. During each shift, an average of 50 to 80 Lorries are loaded, depending on the weather – in warm weather, more Lorries are loaded due to the higher demand for cold drinks.

At the point of shipping, Coca-Cola had to

overcome a crucial challenge with regard to speed and safety. Pallets with drinks are packed and labelled with a bar code onto a conveyor belt. Sixteen forklifts drive back and forth to collect the pallets and load them onto the correct lorry. The forklifts were able to load up to three pallets, but could only scan two of these. If a third pallet was picked up, the driver had to get out of the forklift and scan it manually using a hand-held scanner. As

this led to time loss and dangerous situations, the automated scanning process required a new solution.

High performance lift trucks using a robust scanning systemCoca-Cola looked for new forklifts that were able to carry more pallets and also had the ability to scan them automatically.

Zetes developed a scanning system on the new Motrac forklifts and also advised on the design of the forklift attachments. With this new system, one type of forklift can either carry 1 euro pallet, 1 block pallet, 2 euro pallets, 2 block pallets, 3 euro pallets or 12 ‘Dollies.’ Zetes equipped each forklift with three moveable, very robust scanners and sensors to the front.

Put down the Pickling Paste

Devon welding machine manufacturer, Inverter Fusion Ltd, has introduced a new electrolytic weld cleaning machine which eliminates the dangers of traditional weld cleaning methods.

The traditional ‘pickling paste,’ primarily used to clean stainless steels after welding, is a combination of hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid which can not only cause serious burns, but also serious lung problems. Although it is used widely, the dangers involved are often overlooked.

Inverter Fusion’s new Fusion Clean machine is a high-quality, electrolytic

cleaner which is not only much safer, but is also far more convenient: the results are instantaneous, and the finish is excellent. And since it avoids the use of harsh toxic chemicals with their attendant storage, handling and disposal problems, the Fusion Clean machine also saves time and money.

Lightweight, portable and operator friendly, Fusion Clean is available in 240v and 110v versions and is housed in a sturdy toughened nylon case for protection, with fan cooling to achieve 100% duty cycles. Fusion Clean machines come complete with everything you need to start cleaning and are covered by a comprehensive 3-year warranty.

ErP means level playing field for heatingMitsubishi Electric has produced a free, CPD-accredited guide to the new Energy Related Products Directive or ErP (2009/125/EC), which is a key part of the European Union’s drive to encourage consumers to use more energy efficient products.

To highlight the requirements under ErP the company has also released a short video which explains how the Directive is designed to help phase out lower performing products whilst having a positive impact on the emissions levels across Europe and increase the share of renewable energies by 20%.

The ErP Directive, which came into force at the end of September 2015, now means that commercial and residential heating products will need to display an energy label, so that consumers can quickly understand the energy efficiency of the products they purchase.

A similar market transformation strategy has already proved highly successful with consumer goods such as fridges and freezers, where it is now very rare to find anything below an A rated product available on the high street.

“There are two parts to the ErP strategy which affect both manufacturers and installers and everyone involved needs to understand how this will change the heating market,” explains Max Halliwell, who fronts the video on behalf of the company.

Firstly, the ErP requires manufacturers to produce energy-using products that meet stringent minimum performance standards. And secondly, these products must be clearly labelled using a standard methodology

so that consumers can quickly understand the energy efficiency of the products they purchase.

These labels will show the efficiency ranging from the most efficient A++ to the least efficient G and will be clearly marked with coloured bars; from green (the most efficient) all the way down to red (least efficient).

The details on the label will identify the efficiency band for heating, and where relevant, hot water production and where relevant, noise, emissions and power consumption.

“For heat pumps they will also indicate the three different climate zones within Europe which is important here because the UK is split between all three of these zones,” adds Halliwell.

“We feel that this is now levelling the playing field for heating products which will allow consumers to see exactly how energy efficient the types of heating they choose are.”

ErP is a significant piece of legislation that will have a major impact on the sale and use

of heating systems in the UK. As such, the requirements of ErP are already being embedded into legislation on the energy efficiency of buildings and as incentive schemes for renewable technologies.

In order to apply for Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments, heating systems will now needs to comply with the Microgeneration Certification

Scheme (MCS), which sets industry standards for products used to produce heat from renewable sources.

In May 2015, the MCS published a new seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) calculator. It also updated its Installation Standard for heat pumps as a direct result of the introduction of ErP. The introduction of this SCOP calculator will enable certification bodies to use a standard method based on ErP to establish whether a heat pump is compliant.

“This is important because in the past, the efficiency of a heating system was based on what is known as the coefficient of performance or COP,” explains Halliwell, “but this shows a single point in time, which is never a good indication on how efficiently it will perform all year round, whereas SCOP shows the performance across the different seasons and gives a much more accurate indication of efficiency.”

The dedicated video can be viewed at the company’s YouTube Channel and further information on the entire range of A++ heat pumps can be found on the dedicated Youtube channel at: http://youtu.be/4tzKoyzRMOU or at: http://www.ecodan.co.uk

The CPD Guide covers both main parts of the ErP: the EcoDesign regulations and the Energy Labelling regulations. The guide explains how the labelling is designed to help businesses and homeowners understand the benefits of each technology and focuses on the importance of ErP in relation to legislation such as the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

The team at SNG Commercial were delighted after winning The Grocer’s New Product Award for its Senses Pure fabric conditioner earlier this year. It was on Friday 2nd October 2015 when the company was deservedly presented with the prize, having fended off difficult competition in the form of many big name brands (such as Domestos and Cif).

The business, which is based in Pudsey, West Yorkshire, is a specialist provider of goods in the household cleaning, laundry detergents & conditioners and personal care segments. Alongside Senses, SNG Commercial owns a number of cleaning brands; Muvo is their leading laundry and household cleaning brand and is positioned to provide products that are premium quality and high performing, comparable to big brands but at a market leading value proposition.

The represented branded item that was selected as being particularly significant at the industry-specific event, Senses Pure, is a hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested fabric conditioner that scooped the title of overall winner for the Household Inc. laundry category.

The panel selected this specific product

for many reasons; namely because of the fantastic results it achieves but also because of the attractively designed packaging. 78% of the consumer panellists rated Senses Pure as either good or excellent in terms of effectiveness and acknowledged that it was suitable for people with sensitive skin. Conclusively, the judges were most impressed

with the fabric conditioner, offering comments such as ‘my laundry seemed especially soft out of the washing machine’ and that it ‘smelt very fresh,’ whilst also confirming that they personally believe the product would stand out on the shelf.

Upon winning the incredibly prestigious title, Simon Gunter, Managing Director of SNG Commercial, commented, “To have won such a recognised award against some very well-established and reputable brands is just amazing. We’ve worked hard to create a high quality product with a leading value proposition so we’re really proud that this has been recognised by consumers and the trade.”

Unwin: Providing high quality, tested mobility solutionsIf there’s one thing you need to know about the future of transport for people with disabilities, it’s this: that safety standards will become increasingly complex and demanding.

Since Unwin began more than 50 years ago, there have been enormous changes.

Go back half a century and disabled people were virtually trapped in their own homes or in institutions. When wheelchair-users were taken out in vehicles, they could be tied down with leather straps or neckties or bits of rope. Such devices did not work well.

It was personal experience of the horrible brain and body bashing dangers of inadequate restraints that prompted Unwin to become the first company in the world to design and manufacture proper wheelchair and passenger restraints. These helped to liberate a generation.

Chris Hellier, Unwin’s Managing Director,

says, “Our early inventions do look a bit primitive compared to what we’re designing and manufacturing nowadays. It’s like putting a Seventies calculator alongside a new iPhone. It’s a real eye-opener to see how far we’ve come. Standards are so much higher now and they will keep on rising.

“As the UK market-leader, we’ve been making a series of moves to keep on improving the safety of our products and help people to get on with their lives. This year, for example, we’ve expanded our engineering section and re-located and revamped our workshop. We’ve set up a 24/7 breakdown and repairs service for doors and lifts, built a new service area and trained up a team for the inspection and examination of vehicle tails lifts. We’re creating a new training room for the hundreds of people that come on our safety and risk assessment and management courses throughout the year. We’ve got a new demonstration van coming soon.

“Now that we’re part of the same corporate group as Autoadapt, BraunAbility, Bruno Independent Living Aids and Foca Braun, we offer a complete range of safe and

reliable products: wheelchair-restraints, occupant restraints, seating and flooring systems, wheelchair lifts, ramps, doors and accessories. As a worldwide business, we’re well-placed to help customers meet all their safety needs.

“We were the first UK manufacturer of wheelchair safety systems to get our own dynamic laboratory for crash tests and it’s proving invaluable. We carry out more tests on products, more quickly and more intensively. We’re making our products even more robust, and giving people the full benefits of our research.

“Our products may only ever need to get used once to their full capacity – i.e., in a crash – and when they do get used like that, they have to work. We make sure they do.”
