1-D tube bendingStaffordshire-based TPCATS, a manufacturer and supplier of aftermarket emission control systems, has invested £160,000 in an advanced 1-D tube bending machine plus tooling from Tubefab.

The 100TDRE-RBE from Tubefab’s CSM range, is a 5-axis, double stack electric hybrid tube bender with electric boost. It has enabled TPCATS to deliver the very tight radius bends that are being increasingly sought by motor manufacturers and associated first-and second-tier equipment manufacturers.

Paul Stubbs, MD of TPCATS, comments, “Today’s drive towards more tightly packed engine bays, wider diameter exhaust systems, and rapid warm-up times achieved by positioning catalytic converters even closer to exhaust manifolds, is clearly signalling a growing demand for 1-D bending.

“We were already successfully bending at 1.5 x diameter. The CSM machine, however,

has equipped us with the means to produce flawless 1 x diameter bends. We are currently bending 70mm diameter mild steel, stainless steel and titanium at 1-D, as well as producing complex components involving multiple and tight radius bends – with reduced requirements for fabrication and welding.

“We will soon be extending that capability to 80mm diameter tube.”

Investing in a MECAL CNC machining centre and a MECAL CN mitre saw from Addison Saws has helped Surrey-based Designplan Lighting reduce customer lead times by up to 50%. With outsourcing both the cutting and machining of aluminium extrusions typically taking several weeks, the lighting specialist decided it was time to extend its already considerable in-house machining capabilities. The CNC machining centre supplied to Designplan Lighting is an MC 305 Kosmos model from MECAL. Able to machine components of up to 8000mm in length, the MC 305 Kosmos can easily accommodate the longest extrusions used by Designplan Lighting, while its 4-axis operation enables the lighting specialist to drill, mill and tap components in one single operation. “We are now able to log every job by material cost and machining time,” says Designplan Lighting’s Engineering Manager, Rob Aldred, “and just one month after the MECAL machines were installed the savings made were considerable. So far we have invested approximately £120,000 in the MECAL CNC machining centre and CN mitre saw. “Had we not spoken to Addison Saws, we could have easily spent £250,000 on a 5-axis milling

machine. Their first class production solutions have not only halved our lead times for aluminium light fittings, but also saved our company a substantial amount.”

Operating facilities in which stock must be kept at critically safe temperatures requires you to check the temperature of your equipment on a regular basis, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. For instance this is often the case at food manufacturing organisations. Operating your equipment outside of specifications can cost your business thousands as well as potentially

damaging critical stock and regulatory standards.

Our innovative Goldilock wireless temperature monitoring system is capable of monitoring up to 20 different temperature sensitive equipment units, enabling in some cases payback timescales of less than a year due to reduced energy costs. Goldilock offer sensors capable of monitoring temperatures of fridges, freezers, hot boxes and of liquid. Temperature data can be easily uploaded from more than one business site onto a safe and secure cloud system that can then be easily accessed for quality validation etc. Further owners will be

immediately alerted to any critical and costly equipment failures so that timely mitigation can be realised.

Low Cost Temperature Monitoring could save you THOUSANDS and aid adherence to REGULATORY standards

Ecolab Contamination Control, a worldwide provider of leading products and services for the control of microbial contamination in the cleanroom environment, has launched a unique product which will revolutionise the process of transfer disinfection within the pharmaceutical industry.

Klercide Sporicidal Alcohol has all the positive features of an alcohol-based disinfectant, including a low surface tension which improves product contact. It also has a ‘flash off’ time of just two minutes and minimal residues, which combined with sporicidal properties, significantly enhances its efficacy.

Critically, Klercide Sporicidal Alcohol will minimise the risk of introducing spores to the manufacturing process during transfer disinfection; a process which has long posed a significant challenge to hospital pharmacies and pharmaceutical manufacturers alike.

It is exactly what the pharmaceutical industry and hospitals have been waiting for and has been specifically developed to address a long standing need to provide a sterile sporicidal product with the key characteristics of alcohol for the transfer disinfection process.

This is in line with recent regulatory guidelines, including GMP Annex 1 and PIC/S P1007-6 which states that ‘Sporicidal agents

should be used wherever possible but particularly for spraying in components and equipment in aseptic areas.’

Emergency Services Show

Orvecare’s range of patient specific, single use linens has been designed with the aid of Clinicians from the Ambulance Service and NHS Trusts.

Patient and Clinician safety and dignity coupled with infection control, operational and cost efficiencies have been paramount throughout the research and design process.

The orve+wrap thermal blanket is a great example of Clinician and manufacturer collaboration.

orve+wrap will pro-actively warm a patient in either an acute emergency or elective surgery situation. It will raise and then maintain a patient’s core temperature. Maintaining a core temperature of ≥36°C will greatly improve the patient’s outcome. It is radiolucent, non-conductive, safe to use with laser and diathermy procedures and ultimately, unless clinically soiled, orve+wrap can

be disposed of in the recyclable waste stream.

Patient specific Ambulance Linen Packs can be also used as a transfer sheet to transfer a patient from ambulance to A&E trolley. This linen can stay with the patient throughout the initial assessment process within the hospital until either discharge or ward admittance. Where multiple items of laundered linen would normally be required, one linen pack is used for each patient.

Another advantage of single use linens is the ambulance crew can clean and redress the ambulance without the requirement to use hospital linen resources. This process aids infection control and cross contamination issues associated with traditional linen.

Front line Paramedics have aided in the design of the Multimover. A lightweight product that can be easily manipulated when a patient is in an enclosed space or an emergency evacuation is required. Multimover can safely lift 40 stones. Another great example of Clinicians and manufacturers working in conjunction to aid operational efficiencies. All of Orvecare’s products are, unless clinically soiled, recyclable.

The Emergency Services Show is the leading UK annual event for all emergency services personnel bringing the sector together with the single aim of improving public safety.

As the marketplace for an emergency services industry looking to drive efficiencies through collaboration, the show reflects the importance the services are placing on finding new ways of working together for the mutual benefit of the individual organisations involved and for the benefit of the public they all serve.

The first Show was held in 2006 at The Royal Horticultural Halls in London with just 90 exhibitors and 1,000 visitors. The Show grew and moved to Stoneleigh Park where it was held from 2007 to 2012.

The requirement for more space took the event to the NEC in Birmingham from 2013, moving this year to Hall 5, the NEC’s most prestigious event space. With 450 exhibitors and a 10% increase on visitors to the 2015 event.

2016 is set to be the biggest ever show from organisers Broden Media. It will once again be held at the NEC Birmingham on the 21-22 September.

Laboratory Excellence Company of Choice

Best Practice UK is extremely proud to present its Laboratory Excellence Company of Choice Award Profile to ALS Environmental.

As one of the UK’s leading providers of analytical services, ALS Environmental provide environmental testing services across the contaminated land, drinking water, waste water, air monitoring and waste management industries. Designed to help meet your environmental regulatory requirements, the company offers customers’ accurate, legally defensible, analytical data, providing an extensive range of UKAS, MCERTS and DWTS accredited analytical services.

As part of ALS Global, the world’s largest and most diversified analytical testing service providers, the Environmental business was set up in 1989 as part of Severn Trent Laboratories and in 2013 ALS Group Purchased the business and all sites. The ALS Group was formed in 1863 and is one of Australia’s oldest companies, originally Campbell’s Soap Brothers.

“By working with our customers for over twenty years, we have been able develop a range of analytical services that meet your specific needs, including standard industry, regulatory and bespoke analytical suites,” commented Sales and Marketing Manager, Nick Barsby.

“We are able to respond in a timely and efficient manner to your analytical and sampling requirements, via our network of laboratories and service centres across the UK and Ireland. This network also means we are able to provide customers

with additional capacity and the reassurance of back-up laboratory systems.

ALS Environmental were the first UK laboratory to UKAS and DWTS accredit the MALDI-ToF Conformation technique which provides instant and informative confirmation data for Microbiology clients. They have developed one of the most extensive MALDI-ToF libraries in the world, with a market leading 56 species of Legionella, as well a broad portfolio of other water borne pathogens

The ground breaking identification of the MALDI-ToF technology, allows the company to remove the need for presumptive data for Legionella and all other bacteriological analysis, with all data reported as Colony Forming Units (CFU).

The instrument is currently able to detect over 10,000 different bacteria and fungi species from a range of genus. In addition the technology allows ALS to continually expand its

own databases by purchasing reference cultures, adding to the instrument library; if the protein structure is unique then they are able to analyse for this at a species level.

ALS Environmental can help organisations working in the water treatment sector that have a host of environmental and public health requirements that they are obliged to maintain

to ensure a safe working environment.

The risk of contaminated water in nosocomial situations is of added importance due to the high number of immuno-compromised patients that rely on water from these facilities. There has been a high focus on the risks associated with Legionella, such as Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 04-01 or HSG220 for use in Care Homes, but Legionella is not the only health risk potentially living in your water supply.

The ESKAPE pathogens are all of greater concern due to their antibiotic resistant nature and due to the high risk of infection from contaminated water. To help manage the risk of these bacteria ALS Environmental utilise the MALDI-ToF approach to provide

instant confirmed counts of these bacteria with a full speciation if required.

ALS Environmental’s Coventry laboratory is the Centre of Excellence for Waste (Water and Soils) and Microbiology. The Drinking Water laboratory in Wakefield helps monitor the drinking water for over 5 million UK homes across the British Isles.

To further support your environmental monitoring requirements, ALS Environmental also offers in-field sampling and monitoring, direct data transfer, sample scheduling, automation of registering and a host of other support services.

“ALS has 7 core values: Honesty & Integrity; Exceeding Expectations; Belief in our ability; Hard work and continuous improvement; Doing it better; celebrating success and Safety as a priority. We strive to abide by these values, offering our customers products and services which are second to none,” concluded Nick.

“Since ALS Purchased the Environmental business from Severn Trent labs in 2013 we have undergone major investment in our equipment and infrastructure. ALS Group operates by acquisition and we have several potential targets across Europe for the next financial year.”

ALS Environmental attends many trade shows throughout the year including Water Management Society, Healthcare Estates, Borehole Users Conference and AGS.

Although only established in 2012, Leman Instruments has developed rapidly to become a leading European company specialising in the field of high technology gas generators. The family-ran business, which is located in Archamps Technopole, France, places a specific focus on the manufacture and marketing of sophisticated scientific components utilised in the analysis of solids, liquids and gases.

The specialist in modules of scientific equipment concentrates on the provision of standard products, OEMs and in custom designed realisation involving high purity Hydrogen (H2), Nitrogen (N2), Zero Air & combined solutions for FIDs, GCs, purge Air generations, CH4 & CO2 scrubbers, N2 and multi gas for LCMS.

Individually equipped with high performance communication interfaces (RS485, Ethernet and WLAN options), the reliable instruments significantly reduce operational costs and provide a solid return on investment within the space of two years. Suitably slotting into laboratory, air quality monitoring and industrial environments, the apparatus has been strategically constructed to suit the majority of these related applications.

These premium quality modules also provide high pressure stability, essentially improving upon the resolution and detection limits of instruments, whilst the constant

purity ensures there will be no contamination concerns. Integrating Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM), Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA) and Catalysis technologies, they can be easily controlled via a touch panel or iPad, proving easy to install and operate.

“One of the major benefits of the generators is their maximised safety and conservationism,” said Alexandre Berteletti, Sales & Business Development Manager at Leman Instruments. “They are the most compact of their kind, and they have the smallest footprint with the highest possible efficiency and capacity. They are incredibly safe and eliminate the risk of a chemical reaction, particularly when using hydrogen.

“Because we have internal quality control, our analysers are on hand to make sure the components run properly. This is of great importance, especially since we insist that our generators are exactly what our customers are after, maintaining guaranteed levels of purity. After listening to individual requests we can develop custom solutions together with the client, tailored for specific applications (and at competitive prices).”

One of Leman Instruments’ newest innovations is its combined technology gas generator, the GC STATION 60L & GC STATION 60LC. The single unit incorporates an inboard compressor and is a concept unlike any other currently offered in the marketplace. Alexandre detailed further, “This advancement is unique to our brand and has been appreciated by our customers for being practical. Combining high purity hydrogen, zero air and nitrogen generators, this product acts as a fully automated solution.

“Further developments include new communication protocols which we have established for the benefit of our customers, who will want to be provided with all of the necessary information. All of our products are part of this system; the technology and protocols can be easily integrated

with systems all over the globe.Fundamentally, we always advance along with technology whilst keeping our customers close. We operate with maximum care and we believe that human contact is important – you won’t be put through to any automated hotlines whilst contacting Leman Instruments – we ensure to offer single customers direct support and are always happy to answer any questions they may have.”

Critically, Klercide Sporicidal Alcohol will minimise the risk of introducing spores to the manufacturing process during

transfer disinfection; a process which has long posed a significant challenge to hospital pharmacies and pharmaceutical manufacturers alike. It is exactly what the pharmaceutical industry and hospitals have been waiting for and has been specifically developed to address a long standing need to provide a sterile sporicidal product with the key characteristics of alcohol for the transfer disinfection process.

This is in line with recent regulatory guidelines, including GMP Annex 1 and PIC/S P1007-6 which states that ‘Sporicidal agents should be used wherever possible but particularly for spraying in components and equipment in aseptic areas.’

In the past, water based sporicides have been used which cause significant wetting,

a feature not recommended for transfer disinfection. This can also increase the risk of inadequate product contact, leading to poor practical performance. It can also increase process time or require transfer to take place while the items are still wet. Water based sporicides also result in pooling which can significantly reduce material compatibility and increase the likelihood of residue build-up.

The consequences of inadequate transfer disinfection where spores evade the disinfection process are extremely serious.

This is a view supported by Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), which states: ‘Transfer of materials into and out of the cleanroom is one of the greatest potential sources of contamination,’ (GMP Annex 1).

Klercide Sporicidal Alcohol is manufactured in Ecolab Contamination Control’s own purpose built cleanroom and is supported by the firm’s Process Match assurance mark to highlight that the manufacturing processes match those of its customers. It is also fitted with the patented SteriShield Delivery System (SDS), the only fully validated trigger spray system on the market, which ensures the integrity of the product is protected throughout its entire use.

By using Klercide Sporicidal Alcohol customers will improve their processes and deliver contamination control without compromise.

Proto Labs, Ltd., the company that’s globally recognised for producing machined and injection moulded parts in as little as one day, has expanded its production facility in Telford, England with the recent addition of stereolithography (SL), an advanced additive manufacturing service for custom prototyping.

Together with Proto Labs’ CNC machining and injection moulding services, they are now truly able to help designers and engineers take a product from the initial stages of prototyping through to low-volume production.

The SL process uses an ultraviolet laser to draw on the surface of a liquid thermoset resin. Where it draws, the liquid turns to solid. This is repeated in thin, two-dimensional cross-sectional layers to form complex three-dimensional parts that are far more accurate than many other types of additive manufacturing processes currently available. Proto Labs’ additive manufacturing service can produce parts in sizes up to 736mm by 635mm by 533mm, using a selection of thermoplastic-like materials that mimic ABS and polypropylene..

Proto Labs’ stereolithography process offers high accuracy and a smooth surface finish on parts. It works well for prototyping very small parts and complex geometries during the earliest stages of a component’s development.

A 40 year old secret recipe, a famous chef and a link to a South African diamond family. Is this a new spy thriller? Well no, but it does lead to excellent Biltong!

Here’s the link – the famous Partridge Restaurant was once the home of the Cullinan Diamond family who owned the Great Kimberley diamond mine. Willem Van de Ploeg, former head chef of said restaurant has shared the secret recipe with the current owners of Chichester Biltong who own the Partridge restaurant building.

The heritage of this recipe is almost as rich as the country from which it heralds. Now with the second largest biltong drying chamber in the UK two Great Taste Awards, Chichester Biltong has certainly made a South African mark on UK shores.

Daniel Hill, Digital Marketing

Manager for the brand said, “Our biltong comes from a traditional South African recipe using only high quality British beef; we want more people to experience and enjoy this SA delicacy and the range of flavours we’ve paired with it”.

The packaging needed to be

rugged yet delicate with simple branding reflecting the history and colours of South Africa. National Flexible produced a kraft paper laminate with registered window which does just that.

With over 10 years of experience in the in the build, installation and maintenance of contemporary filling and packaging machines along with a refined knowledge in the industry, JJA Pack has established itself as a real frontrunner amongst its competitors.

The business, which is based in

Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was initially formed to facilitate the growing demands of leading dairies by providing efficient support services and dependable machinery. The significant progression that ensued enabled JJA Pack to turn its hand to other specialities, supplying a vast range of equipment for a whole host of applications.

These extended capabilities include the refurbishment of mechanical or electrical systems on a wide range of filling apparatus and the delivery of PLC upgrades, hardware upgrades and software modifications. One of its main areas of expertise relates to the food and beverage sectors – it even has the proficiency to supply and service a selection of chocolate equipment. It also has a wealth of knowledge in cup filling and bottle

filling machinery manufactured by companies such as Duckworth, Colunio, Trustpak, BWI Fords and Volumet (to name just a few).

“From such humble beginnings, we have managed to continually develop and achieve worldwide respect,” commented Jamie Ashpole, Founder and Director of JJA Pack. “We can produce equipment which can deposit pretty much any flow-able product, and we can also manufacture machinery per customers’ requests which incorporate bespoke designs for individual applications.

“We are currently working with Food Jet, a printing company from Holland, acting as their sales agent within the UK. This involves supplying machinery on their behalf and providing food printing

services for virtually any product, such as chocolate, jam and cream.”

JJA Pack’s unparalleled status has resulted in the company operating extensively on an international basis. Its esteemed customer base comprises many huge OEMS, including confectionary giants Cadbury and Sollich, and its premium quality products and services are highly regarded by many leading producers and brand-owners who have installed these machines in multiple quantities worldwide.

“If you were to compare us to our competitors – organisations which are larger in size – we have a distinct advantage,” Jamie continued. “Bigger manufacturers are more restricted, as they are limited by corporate loopholes, so we have greater flexibility (as we are not tied to one specific product range or solution). We also retain a strong focus on start-up companies as they can often find themselves neglected by major manufacturers.

“Our biggest selling point is that we take the time to listen to all of our customers, and we only take on jobs which we know we can manage capably and can complete to the set timescale. The company philosophy and the success of how we operate is based simply upon the promise to do what we say,

when we say.”

When discussing JJA Pack’s progressive path, Jamie was confident that his flourishing enterprise will continue to advance effectively, moving forwards at a strong and steady pace, “The Company has experienced continual growth since its establishment, and the aim is to keep on progressing and increasing our customer base whilst working on developing our own equipment range,” he summarised.

“One aspect which is integral to our brand is exceptional customer service. We have developed numerous working relationships as a result of our exemplary abilities, with the majority of new contacts coming through recommendations. Maintaining such a good competitive service is very much an on-going priority for JJA Pack.”

Infection Control Specialist of the Year

Best Practice is pleased to report that Sanondaf UK has been selected as its highly coveted Infection Control Specialist of the Year.

The first European touch-less disinfection and decontamination franchise is best known for providing an Advanced Infection Prevention & Control system that kills 99.99% or higher of harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and mould (including common pathogens

such as Norovirus, Flu, Salmonella, E-Coli, MRSA and high risk infectious agents such as Ebola, Hepatitis, TB and HIV).

The award-winning business was formed in Malta in 2011 and a UK presence was established in Lanarkshire three years later. In just over 12 months the company managed to develop 15 franchise territories throughout the UK, including the major conurbations of London, Manchester, Liverpool

Newcastle and Glasgow, and so holds the unique status as the only decontamination franchise in Europe.

“We believe that everyone deserves to live, work and play in a hygienic and safe environment,” commented Stuart White, Director of Sanondaf UK. “Our mission is to help people live safely by reducing the risks associated with infection and cross contamination. We achieve this through our commitment to using the highest quality products, our fully trained Sanondaf technicians and a passion for continuous product development.”

The Sanondaf system is very simple in its application, and is a highly efficient and effective way of clinically disinfecting high risk areas. It is also 100% environmentally friendly, and poses no risk to people, pets or plants. The patented chemical and application process is also completely non-corrosive, meaning electrical and electronic devices can be treated safely (as well as areas of any sizes and surfaces) with no residue remaining after

application. The ability to treat 100% of any area and its contents is a tremendous advantage in minimising the risk of an infectious outbreak caused by cross contamination.

“We offer a cost-effective and highly efficient service, providing our service on a preventative basis, usually at monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly intervals, based on the bespoke requirements of the client,” Stuart continued. “We can enter premises encountering an outbreak and have it fully disinfected and back up and running in a matter of hours. The decontamination of a 5 star leisure resort during 2015 was the most significant commission undertaken, after they encountered a Norovirus outbreak so severe that they had to close their resort. Sanondaf were able to minimise the closure period, and help get the resort operational and open to over 500 customers within the week.

“We serve a wide and varied range of clients and sectors including hospitals, care homes, nurseries, offices, vets, haulage, hotel, pub

& catering venues, sporting and social venues. The touch-less application innovation is a tremendous way of minimising human error and is often a cheaper alternative when compared to more traditional deep-cleaning methods.

“I am so proud of our team, franchisees and customers who have all played a part in helping Sanondaf UK achieve this award. We are delighted with what we have achieved and we look forward to this year being yet another exciting step in the growth of the Sanondaf brand, as we continue to grow our client base across every sector. Our ultimate goal is to have 100 operational territories across the UK. Sanondaf will continue to bring the most innovative products and services to the market, accompanied with our highest levels of customer service.”

LISTA is a world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative, efficient, modular storage and workspace systems and used by over 100,000 satisfied customers world-wide across a wide range of industry sectors including automotive, healthcare, aerospace and rail.

With the UK rail sector currently experiencing an unprecedented period of rapid growth and acceleration it is of no surprise that this is a key market for LISTA. With its storage and workspace systems proving to be highly effective solutions in other sectors (such as automotive and aerospace), it was a natural progression for LISTA to raise

its profile in the UK rail market and replicate its success in Europe and indeed worldwide.

To give LISTA even greater exposure to the UK rail market, Chris Hargreaves-Heap, General Manager at LISTA (UK) Ltd, took the decision to exhibit at Railtex held earlier this year at the NEC. Showcasing a wide range of cabinets and storage solutions over the three day duration of the show, Chris said, “Railtex was a fantastic show for us this year. We attracted a lot of serious interest in our products and the most important factor for us was that so many of the people who came to visit us on the stand were end-users of the products and could understand the real value and benefit of having LISTA products in their workshops. As a result, we’ve now secured several new customers in the UK rail sector – including train manufacturer, Bombardier!”

Explaining why LISTA products are a natural solution for lean operating principles, Chris continued, “If we look specifically at railway depots, for example, there is a growing trend in transforming their workspace into lean and efficient environments. We work in partnership with these organisations who value and recognise our expertise in this area and the success we have in delivering best practice.”

A senior Thorite sales engineer visited the company’s design team and proposed changing their choice of pneumatic cylinders. Normal cylinders comprise the cylinder itself, tubing, flow control

unit, valves and wiring all as separate components to create one circuit, but as Thorite is IMI Precision Engineering’s biggest distributor the engineer knew there was a far better product available.

He advised the use of IVAC cylinders on the installation which are patented, weight and space optimised pneumatic cylinders that reduce energy costs by up to 50%. They combine pilot and control valves, position sensors and flow regulators in one compact unit, saving energy, removal and replacement time and needing much less space, resulting in improved efficiency, reduced downtime and greater ease of use. An energy saving recommendation was the installation of Emerson filter regulators working in conjunction with the IVAC cylinders to ensure constantly controlled , reduced pressures for the pneumatic system.

Stephen Lambert, Robson’s Project Engineer, impressed by both the knowledge

of Thorite’s engineering personnel and the calibre of the pneumatic products said:“It’s refreshing to work with people who are so obviously experts in their field. Thorite understand our insistence on quality, value for money and the need for energy efficiency in all aspects of our manufacturing process, an insistence that has gained Robson a wide range of prestigious business awards and an exceptionally loyal customer base. It’s a pleasure to find such a specialist supplier whose priorities and standards of business so closely match our own.”

Full details of IMI Precision Engineering’s IVAC pneumatic cylinders and Emerson filter regulators are available from the Thorite website, by contacting the Technical Application Team on Freephone 0800 142 2446 or by visiting any of Thorite’s 10 regional Sales & Service Centres located throughout Yorkshire, Lancashire, the West Midlands and the North East.

Thorite Conveys Innovative Pneumatics Technology to RobsonSheffield-based Mechanical Handling systems manufacturer Geo. Robson & Co. (Conveyors) contacted Thorite to enquire whether they could suggest solutions to enhance their production requirements.

West Suffolk NHS has extended its use of electric vehicles, taking delivery of 6 new vehicles from Bradshaw Electric Vehicles to enable daily transport requirements to be completed efficiently and safely around the hospital.

Having had a fleet of ride on electric tow tractors from Bradshaw for over 18 years, West Suffolk contacted Bradshaw for options to allow them to operate more vehicles at one time and increase safety.

West Suffolk opted for the PT300 pedestrian controlled vehicle, a powerful but compact vehicle at only 700mm wide, allowing two way traffic through hospital corridors. The vehicle has a tow load capacity of 3,000kg and a payload capacity of 1,000kg. With a maximum speed of just 6.4kph, it is easy to operate and comes with safety features including an emergency stop button, safety cut out and body protection switch, which automatically stops the vehicle if it comes in to contact with the operator.

The pedestrian controlled vehicles will replace the ride on tow tractors previously used internally, and will assist with a number of daily tasks including maintenance

duties, delivering food, collecting both domestic and clinical waste, laundry movement and also dealing with the transportation of medical records between wards. Ride on tow tractors will continue to be used for external operations.By West Suffolk using pedestrian controlled vehicles internally it allows more flexibility in the workload, increased productivity with vehicles being able to pass in corridors and a safer environment due to the low speed and operation of the vehicles.

If you would like further information about any of our vehicles, contact Bradshaw on 01780 782621, email [email protected]

West Suffolk NHS make good use of electric vehicles

Electric Actuators answer the Need for Speed - and so much more!Thorite is offering Electric Drives from selected industry-leading manufacturers including Festo, Parker, SMC and Linak. This flexibility of choice means Thorite’s specialist Automation Applications Team, using sizing software to check application parameters, can help customers specify the most appropriate solution to their precise application requirements, with all the benefits that electric actuation brings.

These benefits include significantly increased speed - up to 10m/s maximum, with spectacular acceleration figures of 125m/s2, or twice that of a jet fighter. Control is much better too, with accuracy to 0.003mm and infinitely variable positioning and repeatability.Electric actuators are 80% efficient, compared to just 15% for pneumatic cylinders, providing typical electricity savings of 50%. An integrated encoder gives constant and perfect

position feedback and customers can add rotary actuators and grippers to the mix for a totally flexible “pick and place” solution.

Previous differences in costs between electric and pneumatic actuation are now much reduced, and with Thorite’s prices fast approaching parity there can be no doubt that electric actuators are the better value, higher performance, increased efficiency option for a wide range of automation applications.

Full details of electric actuators are available from the Thorite website, but there’s no substitute for discussing specific application requirements with the company’s hand-picked trio of experts who make up the Automation Applications Team. This comprises Mike Perry, the Systems Division’s Business Development Manager who can be contacted on

07791 051574, Key Account Manager Steve Farrington on 07973 316904 or Pneumatics & Vacuum Applications Manager Mik Rhodes on 07969 875615.

Once customers make the decision on which model of electric actuator best suits their needs they can be ordered online for next day delivery, or collected from any of Thorite’s 10 regional Sales & Service Centres located throughout Yorkshire, Lancashire, the West Midlands and the North East.

VG Energy has successfully commissioned one of the very first Entrade E3 pellet biomass CHP systems to be deployed in the UK. The VG E3 was installed at Edward Baarda Ltd in North Humberside, providing clean, renewable heat and electricity to this market garden business and making those greens even greener. Edward Baarda is one of the largest market gardener businesses in the region and the company was looking for a

reliable, renewable and affordable form of heat and power. Lowering costs and gaining a competitive edge in the form of additional income streams was vital and Mr Baarda soon focused on Biomass CHP and the Entrade E3 unit from VG Energy. VG Energy is the UK distributor for the E3 and one of the largest biomass specialists in the UK, with plenty of experience in the agricultural sector.

The size of Mr Baarda’s business meant that a powerful, dual E3 unit was specified, providing 50kW of electricity and 120kW of heat. The unit arrived in December last year and was quickly commissioned and ready for launch on 7 January 2016. Baarda’s tomatoes and cucumbers will now be grown with green, renewable heat and power, and the business will benefit from a 20-year income stream.

Washing machine gets the smell out of artificial latex body parts!

Limbs & Things is a medical simulation company that manufactures artificial body parts for use in clinical and surgical skills training. The manufacturing process involves the use of various chemicals, and when the latex material comes out of the ovens it has a very strong and unpleasant smell. In order to get rid of the smell, and also to improve the colour of the finished items, they are washed, using ordinary washing powder, in a machine supplied by

Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems.

The machine, which the company bought in 2013, is a Schulthess 7kg washer-extractor and, according to Mark Brown, Manufacturing Maintenance Engineer at Limbs & Things, who works in the engineering department, is in use every day, often three times a day.

“The material is poured into the moulds, goes into the ovens and from there the production line operators put it straight to the washing machine to get rid of the smell”, he told us.

Mark has been very pleased with the machine. “It is reliable and easy to use and does exactly the job we want it to”, he said. “A very good buy!”

Dairy Crest Severnside has more than double machine life expectancy and reduced downtime, and no extra costs, following a decision to commission a lubrication analysis and LabTecta sealing solution from AVT Reliability.

The dairy company had recurring water ingress issues with water cooling towers that were resulting in reduced Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) on the pump motors.

Analysis by AVT indicated that the motors were prematurely failing due to water ingress into the bearing housing. This ingress compromised lubrication and caused the bearings

and, ultimately, the motor to fail.

After identifying the issue, AVT’s condition monitoring specialists arranged for its pump team to devise a solution that would eliminate water ingress issues within the water cooling tower motors.

An integrated approach from AVT Reliability involved working with its sister company AESSEAL on a LabTecta labyrinth design bearing-protector seal to protect the bearings from further contamination failures.

The design of LabTecta took into consideration specific

environmental conditions within the application such as presence of chemicals and product material types. The seals were then prototyped and fully tested before being fitted to the motor.

Dairy Crest achieves improved reliability at no extra costThousands of businesses throughout the UK

rely on Electronic Access Control cards for the security of their building. What many of them are scarily unaware of is that these cards can be easily cloned in just a matter of seconds from just a short distance away allowing criminals to gain easy access.

Using an easily accessible device, thieves can scan these cards and retrieve information from the Radio Frequency Identification chip (known as RFID.) This chip works by responding automatically to a signal sent out by the door reader once within range and then gives out the encrypted access code, the door reader recognises the code and unlocks.

Access cards carried by staff, visitors or contractors may give up its code to ANY reader operating on that radio frequency. Therefore, while your buildings electronic ‘keys’ are being carried, often visibly, by the holder, a third party with a concealed scanner can scan targeted RFID enabled access cards and write that scan to a blank card.

The market leader in the provision of RFID

Blocking Solutions, RFID Secure, has the ideal solution to this growing issue- the clear BloxProx Badgeholder. Never been seen before in the UK, the simple but effective device prevents the access card from being read and sends out a false code to the hacker.

This ground breaking device can shield 125 KHz access cards, which has never been possible before, as well as protecting ISO standard 13.56 Mhz Access and ID cards. Using patented ‘squeeze to read’ technology, the holders give the owner complete control as they can effectively turn the chip ‘on and off.’

“Businesses spend thousands on security but 90% of them don’t realise the weakest link is in the access cards,” commented Robin Rager, Director at RFID Secure. “Our Secure BloxProx Badgeholders ensure the risk of unlawful cloning is completely eliminated. Cards can be inserted and removed from the top of the holder with one hand and the state of the art unique open face design keeps the card locked-in to prevent loss, yet allows easy access to remove the card when necessary.”

For more information or to get hold of one of the devices, contact RFID Secure on 01273 715 225 or email Robin directly on [email protected].

You can find out more information on these products by visiting www.stopthecardclash.london or www.rfidsecure.co.uk

Complete filter unitNew from Extractability, a division of Weldability-Sif, the ProtectoCube line of filtering units equipped with filter cartridges is said to be applicable for nearly every task in the area of fume and dust extraction. The first range of products in the ProtectoCube series is the ECOCUBE range.

The ECOCUBE is a complete filter unit, inclusive of a fan and equipped with near-universal filter cartridges. The polluted air is extracted by means of the ventilator and guided towards the filtering section.

The welding fumes are deposited on the surface of the filter cartridge, which is then cleaned automatically by a blast of compressed air. This detaches the welding fumes, and pushes them into a dust collecting tank. The cleaned air is recycled to the working space without any heat loss.

The importance of using cable avoidance equipment prior to any ground excavation is well documented.

UK manufacturer, C.SCOPE supply cable avoidance equipment worldwide. They have a three pronged strategy in order to minimise the likelihood of cable strikes. Firstly, it is vital that operators receive the best possible training. It is also important that the equipment is operating at the same level on-site as it was when it originally left the factory. And finally, the equipment has to be used correctly when on-site.

C.SCOPE recognise that training is a vital component in preventing cable strikes. A comprehensive ongoing training programme is available for all C.SCOPE customers to ensure that operators understand how to use the

products correctly. C.SCOPE products feature intelligent features such as an Automatic Daily Self Test function (ADST), a dynamic Swing Sensor and Data Logging facilities to help ensure that the best working practices are adhered to and are being applied on-site.

The ADST is used to enhance existing annual service policies to validate both function and calibration each and every day that the unit is powered up ready for use. This extra safety feature compliments the yearly equipment service checks that are carried out, ensuring that the tools are working at optimum level on a daily basis. All C.Scope Cable Avoidance Tools continuously record the Automatic Daily Self Test results along with more general information of how, when and where the equipment is used. This information allows supervisors to audit and organise their fleets in the most effective and efficient manner possible and can also be used to identify ongoing training requirements.

C.SCOPE Cable Avoidance Tools, used in conjunction with a Signal Generator and a range of complementary accessories such as Sondes, enable operators to locate and avoid more underground pipes and cables than previously possible and offer a significant step forward in the quest to reduce the day-to-day risk of cable strikes.
