A weeping 13-year-old girl can be heard with the chaos of the theater behind her.
“My two cousins, they’re sitting on the fl oor ... one of them” is not breathing, the
girl told the dispatcher.The teen’s cousins were 6-year-old
Veronica Moser-Sullivan and Veronica’s mother, Ashley Moser.
The girl tells the 911 dispatcher who was trying to give CPR instructions, “I can’t hear ... it’s too loud ... I can’t hear you. I’m so sorry.”
Veronica was one of those who died. Moser was partially paralyzed.
Testimony revealed that the fi rst 911

La Conferencia Episcopal Venezolana (CEV) expresó su preocupación por la situación que enfrenta el país ante la reincidencia del cáncer que padece Chávez y se quejó de que el gobierno no haya informado a los venezolanos “toda la verdad” sobre el estado de salud del mandatario, que permanece en Cuba.
“Está en un grave riesgo la estabilidad política y social de la nación. Este es un momento histórico, difícil e incierto con rasgos que dibujan

WASHINGTON -- The new year has begun with an avalanche of Republican retrospectives: What went wrong? What must the GOP do?
In attempting to navigate my own thoughts, I keep bumping into advice my father gave me a long time ago: “Learn Spanish. You will need it to survive in the world you will inherit.”
Living in Florida then, the trends were becoming obvious. They were literally in our neighborhood, where in 1960 a recently arrived Cuban family moved in a few doors down. Having just escaped Castro’s Cuba with only a few coins sewn in the hems of the mother’s and daughters’ dresses, this family of six spoke little English.
We became close friends and eventually, as much out of fascination and affection as pragmatism, I did learn their language -- and they mine.
My father’s advice was prescient, if somewhat exaggerated. I haven’t needed Spanish to survive, though being bilingual has helped. A lot. As I often tell college audiences, I was hired for my fi rst job not because I had a journalism degree (I didn’t) but because I spoke Spanish.
What was clear to my father even then is that our hemisphere could not long be segregated by language. Nor, apparently, can we be kept apart by borders, no matter how many fences we build.
Meanwhile, and not incidentally, our new, 113th U.S. Congress has welcomed 31 Hispanic members. Three
are in the Senate, including GOP superstar Marco Rubio of Florida and Republican Ted Cruz of Texas, as well as Democrat Robert Menendez of New Jersey. All are Cuban-American.
Of the 28 Latinos in the House of Representatives, all but fi ve are Democrats.
Why so few Republicans? Therein lurks the relevant question for the GOP and perhaps the most important answer to the puzzle: Learn Spanish.
I offer my father’s imperative not literally but as metaphor. When even some of the Latino candidates don’t speak their forebears’ tongue, one needn’t feign fl uency. Though endearing at times, nothing sounds more ridiculous than a politician pandering with a faux accent or foreign phrase.
Metaphorically, learning Spanish means learning people. Knowing them as human beings, not as statistics on a game board. Recognizing their humanity and fi nding new ways to talk about immigration that don’t alienate entire swaths of the population.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said it best shortly after the November election: “If we want people to like us, we have to like them fi rst.”
Jindal, an Indian-American, should know. The unlikeliest of good ol’ boy governors, he has managed to transcend race and ethnicity in his home state to become incoming chair of the Republican Governors Association. Anti-Latino rhetoric is especially unwelcome in post-Katrina New Orleans, where most will admit that the
growing Latino population rebuilt the city. Instead, dinner conversation during a recent visit with local leaders centered around the state’s evolving cuisine, which is becoming a Cajun-Latino hybrid.
The GOP was always a natural home for Latinos, who tend to be conservative and Catholic, though decreasingly so. Fewer than 60 percent of second-generation Latinos are Catholic, according to the Pew Research Center.
Even so, the Republican narrative of hard work, entrepreneurship and personal responsibility would seem to appeal to recent immigrants who are attracted by those very opportunities. Why aren’t Hispanics hearing the GOP call? Because this aspirational language is drowned out by the rhetoric of rejection.
Last June, Obama, who won 71 percent of the Hispanic vote, announced reprieves from deportation for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants who were here illegally, while Mitt Romney promised to end the reprieves if elected.
Whatever the legitimate arguments on either side, one shows heart and the other doesn’t. Recognizing this defi cit of spirit, rising non-white Republican stars are beginning to form a constellation of “opportunity conservatism,” to borrow Cruz’s term. The ideas aren’t lacking, they say, but the messaging has been disastrous.
Whether these new ways of communication ultimately can change the complexion of the GOP remains to be seen, but the future is clear enough: Lose the Hispanic vote, and you lose.

The carpet was soaked with gasoline. A trip wire had been set up across the front door, attached to a thermos full of glycerine. The thermos was positioned over a pan full of chemicals. A spark would have ignited the whole apartment.
Gumbinner testifi ed that Holmes told him he had left a “pyrotechnic fi ring box” wired to fi rework shells on top of his refrigerator. The box was remote-controlled. Holmes said he left the remote next to a remote-control car in an alley, hoping someone would play with the car and thus set off the device.
The new district attorney for the 18th Judicial District, George Brauchler, was among those in the courtroom Tuesday. He was
sworn in Monday.During the fi rst day of
testimony Monday, Aurora police offi cers who arrived at the theater early July 20 testifi ed about apprehending Holmes and helping victims.
Rita Paulina, 45, whose arm was shattered in the attack, and her husband, Anggiat Situmeang, who carried her from the theater, went to the hearing Monday but refused to go into the courtroom, instead watching on a television feed set up for families in another room.
The stories they heard triggered painful memories and stirred their emotions, said Situmeang. As police recounted the scene they found at the theater, Situmeang recalled, “my tears were coming out.”
Prosecutors hope to show there is enough evidence against Holmes for him to stand trial on 166 counts of murder, attempted murder and other crimes for the shootings at the Century Aurora 16 movie theater that left 12 dead and at least 58 injured.

Supremo de Justicia, Román Duque Corredor, indicó que la constitución es muy precisa y que la juramentación de Chávez para un nuevo mandato no se puede prorrogar. Añadió que en el caso de Chávez no se puede hablar de situación sobrevenida “porque él mismo anuncio al país que se iba (a Cuba) porque estaba enfermo”.
El jurista señaló que “la causa sobrevenida” que prevé la carta magna sólo aplica para los casos en que la Asamblea Nacional no pueda instalarse por alguna situación especial y que eso no puede utilizarse para el presidente electo.
“Desde el punto de vista constitucional y de la moral política lo que procede es designar una junta médica para salir de la duda de qué pasa con el presidente”, dijo Duque

Julio Borges afirmó que el oficialismo está haciendo una interpretación “retorcida” de la constitución para que el presidente de la Asamblea Nacional, el diputado oficialista Diosdado Cabello, no asuma de forma transitoria el gobierno el 10 de enero ante la ausencia del mandatario electo, tal como prevé la carta magna, y convoque a elecciones.
El martes Chávez pidió un permiso a la Asamblea Nacional para no asistir al acto de toma de posesión, dijo Cabello.
Borges dijo a la emisora local Unión Radio que “es verdaderamente lastimoso” que mientras el presidente Chávez está enfermo en La Habana, el oficialismo “esté repartiéndose el poder como una torta sin compadecerse de los problemas graves del país”.
“No sabemos quién gobierna ahora en Venezuela y esa es la realidad”, acotó.
Chávez, de 58 años, se sometió el 11 de diciembre en La Habana a su cuarta operación en un año y medio, dos meses después de ganar la reelección para un mandato de seis años.
El gobernante anunció el 8 de diciembre que le había reaparecido el cáncer en la misma región pélvica donde fue operado hace diez meses atrás por una lesión similar y que debía someterse de inmediato a una nueva intervención.
Por primera vez en año y medio de combate al cáncer, Chávez admitió que había riesgo de que quedara inhabilitado y dijo que de complicarse su situación el vicepresidente debía terminar su período y que en el caso de llamarse a elecciones Maduro sería el candidato del oficialismo.
Desde que Chávez partió el 10 de diciembre a Cuba no se lo ha visto en público.

Esta primavera, Juanita Valdez espera graduarse
de la Universidad Estatal Metropolitana de Denver (Metro State), luego de completar sus prácticas como docente en East High School en Denver, donde ella abandonó los estudios hace 16 años.
Valdez, 32, tuvo un bebé a los 18 años y trabajó en varios lugares para mantener a su familia siendo madre soltera. A los 21 años, obtuvo su diploma de equivalencia (GED, en inglés). A veces pensó en estudiar en la universidad, pero con frecuencia descartó esa idea sobre la base de lo que consideraba como su “realidad personal”.
“Nadie de mi familia jamás fue a la universidad. Y unos pocos con esfuerzo terminaron la escuela secundaria o el GED”, dijo Valdez. “Pensé que ese era mi pequeño papel en la vida y me dije que donde yo estaba era donde yo debía estar. Pero cuanto más lo pensé, más sentí que no tenía que estar allí ni haciendo lo que hacía”.
Cuando hace seis años Valdéz tomó la decisión de ingresar a la universidad, se sintió abrumada, dijo, por ser madre, empleada y estudiante a la vez. Pero eso no la detuvo y ella es un ejemplo de lo que los funcionarios describen como la tendencia de mayor crecimiento en la educación superior de Colorado: estudiantes mayores de 25 años enrolándose en la universidad.
Estudio de las tendenciasEn 2011, un estudio
patrocinado por el estado analizó las tendencias en educación superior y encontró que en los próximos diez años habrá hasta 40.000 nuevos estudiantes asistiendo a las universidades de Colorado. De ese número, el segmento más grande (23.000) es de estudiantes mayores de 25 años sin previos estudios universitarios. Eso significa un aumento del 27 por ciento de esos estudiantes en universidades de cuatro años y del 16 por ciento en instituciones de dos años.
“Ya no se puede asumir que el estudiante universitario tiene de 18 a 22 años y que proviene de un hogar de clase media en el que los dos padres trabajan o que va a vivir en la universidad. Esos estudiantes son ahora la minoría”, dijo Matt Gianneschi, subdirector ejecutivo del Departamento de Educación Superior de Colorado. “La mayoría de los estudiantes ahora son no tradicionales, en Colorado y en todo el país”.
Por eso, las universidades de Colorado y de todo el país están haciendo los ajustes necesarios para servir a las necesidades de los nuevos estudiantes.
Un estudio de 2012 realizado por el Institute for a Competitive Workforce, afialiado con la U.S. Chamber of Commerce, indica que Colorado es uno de los 13 estados que recibió buenas calificaciones en el área de innovación de educación en línea. El reporte afirma que Colorado se destacó por sus esfuerzos de promover educación en línea, que permite que estudiantes no tradicionales accedan a la educación universitaria.
El presidente de Metro State, Stephen Jordan, dijo recientemente que 1.000 nuevos estudiantes se enrolaron
el otoño pasado en el programa de éxito estudiantil de esa universidad, que ayuda a los estudiantes adaptarse a la vida académica universitaria. Los estudiantes pueden elegir entre 40 “caminos académicos” según sus metas personales y necesidades. En general, según Jordan, uno de cada cuatro estudiantes usa un “horario híbrido”, es decir, toma algunas clases en el campus y otras en línea.
“Creo que para muchos de nuestros estudiantes la universidad es algo que hacen entre otras cosas importantes en sus vidas, como trabajar”, dijo Jordan. “Cuando uno tiene que pagar por sus propios estudios y pagar por la casa, los servicios públicos y la comida, todo eso es importante. Esas son las cosas prioritarias. Por eso, aprendimos que para retener a esos estudiantes, para ayudarlos a tener éxito, tenemos que satisfacer sus necesidades”.
La Universidad Regis tiene su campus principal en el que los estudiantes reciben clases en estudios clásicos, pero en los últimos años ha abierto otros lugares satélites y clases en línea para ayudar a que los adultos que trabajan continúen con su desarrollo profesional. Uno de esos campus, el que está en el Denver Tech Center, está cerca de la estación del tren urbano de pasajeros.
“Están llevando la universidad a dónde está la gente en vez de hacer que la gente vaya a la universidad”, comentó Gianneschi.
Quizá uno de los más interesantes ejemplos de innovación entre las universidades en Colorado es el llamado “campus global” de la Universidad Estatal de Colorado (CSU), que es totalmente en línea y regionalmente acreditado (el máximo nivel de acreditación en Estados Unidos). El programa comenzó en 2008 y tiene más de 7.000 estudiantes de todo el mundo. El 45 por ciento de ellos son los primeros de su familia en ir a la universidad y la edad promedio es 35 años.
“La audiencia que tenemos es la que quiere seguir progresando, es decir, obtener un título en una universidad reconocida y de buena reputación sin tener que vivir en la universidad y sin tener que dejar de trabajar”, dijo Lauren Anuskewicz, directora de mercadeo del campus Global.
Este otoño, CSU firmó un acuerdo con Udacity, un sitio de educación fundado por un profesor de la Universidad Stanford, donde los estudiantes pueden tomar clases introductorias de ciencias de la computación dictadas por un profesor de la Universidad de Virginia.
Cuando se abrieron esas clases, se inscribieron 94.000 estudiantes de todo el mundo, en una modalidad conocida como “masivos cursos abiertos en línea”, o MOOC en inglés. Los estudiantes de CSU-Global que completan las clases pueden recibir créditos universitarios que pueden transferir a su carrera. Para ellos, pagan $89 para tomar un examen en un centro de exámenes específico y, si lo aprueban, se les dan los créditos.
“Las clases de introducción a ciencias de las computación despiertan mucho interés entre nuestros estudiantes, pero no sentíamos que podíamos ofrecer nuestra propia clase”,
dijo Jon Bellum, vicepresidente y decano de CSU-Global. “Al ver el rigor académico (de Udacity), pensamos que esa era la mejor opción para nosotros”.
‘Muchas más opciones’El crecimiento de
MOOC hace que algunos se sientan incómodos. Jordan, por ejemplo, cree que los empleadores podrían cuestionar la hoja de vida (currículo) de un candidato que incluya esas clases. Pero, según Bellum, es sólo otra
manera de ayudar a los estudiantes no tradicionales.
“Estamos en una época de revolucionarias innovaciones en la que existen muchas más opciones para la educación superior de las que existían en el pasado”, dijo Bellum.
Phil DiStefano, canciller de la Universidad de Colorado en Boulder, dijo que en esa universidad se debate cómo armonizar el enfoque tradicional con el nuevo enfoque. Una manera de hacerlo es ofrecer las clases
introductorias en líneas y luego pedirle a los estudiantes que completen sus clases en Boulder.
“Creo que la educación en línea complementa lo que hacemos tradicionalmente. No creo que reemplace a las universidades residenciales, sino que las mejora”, dijo DiStefano.

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration proposed the most sweeping food safety rules in decades, requiring farmers and food companies to be more vigilant in the wake of deadly outbreaks in peanuts, cantaloupe and leafy greens.
The long-overdue regulations are aimed at reducing the estimated 3,000 deaths a year from foodborne illness. Just since last summer, outbreaks of listeria in cheese and salmonella in peanut butter, mangoes and cantaloupe have been linked to more than 400 illnesses and as many as seven deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The actual number of those sickened is likely much higher.
The FDA’s proposed rules published on Jan. 4 would require farmers to take new precautions against contamination, to include making sure workers’ hands are washed, irrigation water is clean, and that animals stay out of fields. Food manufacturers will have to submit food safety plans to the government to show they are keeping their operations clean.
Many responsible food companies and farmers are already following the steps that the FDA would now require them to take. But officials say the requirements could have saved lives and prevented illnesses in several of the large-scale outbreaks that have hit the country in recent years.
In a 2011 outbreak of listeria in cantaloupe that claimed 33 lives, for example, FDA inspectors found pools of dirty water on the floor and old, dirty processing equipment at Jensen Farms in Colorado where the cantaloupes were
grown. In a peanut butter outbreak this year linked to 42 salmonella illnesses, inspectors found samples of salmonella throughout Sunland Inc.’s peanut processing plant in New Mexico and multiple safety problems, such as birds flying over uncovered trailers of peanuts and employees not washing their hands.
Under the new rules, companies would have to lay out plans for preventing those sorts of problems, monitor their own progress on those safety efforts and explain to the FDA how they would correct them.
“The rules go very directly to preventing the types of outbreaks we have seen,” said Michael Taylor, FDA’s deputy commissioner for foods.
The FDA estimates the new rules could prevent almost 2 million illnesses annually, but it could be several years before the rules are actually preventing outbreaks. Taylor said it could take the agency another year to craft the rules after a four-month comment period, and farms would have at least two years to comply — meaning the farm rules are at least three years away from taking effect. Smaller farms would have even longer to comply.
The new rules, which come exactly two years to the day President Barack Obama’s signed food safety legislation passed by Congress, were already delayed. The 2011 law required the agency to propose a first installment of the rules a year ago, but the Obama administration held them until after the election.
The produce rule would mark the first time the FDA has had real authority to regulate food on farms. In an effort to stave off protests from farmers, the farm rules are tailored to apply only to certain
fruits and vegetables that pose the greatest risk, like berries, melons, leafy greens and other foods that are usually eaten raw. A farm that produces green beans that will be canned and cooked, for example, would not be regulated.
Such flexibility, along with the growing realization that outbreaks are bad for business, has brought the produce industry and much of the rest of the food industry on board as Congress and FDA has worked to make food safer.
In a statement, Pamela Bailey, president of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, which represents the country’s biggest food companies, said the food safety law “can serve as a role model for what can be achieved when the private and public sectors work together to achieve a common goal.”
The farm and manufacturing rules are only one part of the food safety law. The bill also authorized more surprise inspections by the FDA and gave the agency additional powers to shut down food facilities. In addition, the law required stricter standards on imported foods. The agency said it will soon propose other overdue rules to ensure that importers verify overseas food is safe and to improve food safety audits overseas.
Food safety advocates frustrated over the last year as the rules stalled praised the proposed action.
“The new law should transform the FDA from an agency that tracks down outbreaks after the fact, to an agency focused on preventing food contamination in the first place,” said Caroline Smith DeWaal of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
FDA proposes sweeping new food safety rules

de Seguridad Interna de los Estados Unidos (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció una medida administrativa conocida como Acción Diferida en la cual se abrió la posibilidad para que algunos jóvenes y estudiantes indocumentados puedan permanecer y trabajar en Estados Unidos por un periodo de 2 años.
Desde su apertura y hasta la primera quincena de diciembre pasado se habían recibido 367,903 solicitudes bajo la Acción Diferida, de las cuales se han aprobado 102,965 y cuyos beneficiarios han empezado a recibir sus tarjetas de autorización de empleo.
Es importante que aquellas personas que han recibido su tarjeta de autorización de empleo continúen con su proceso, aplicando por su número de Seguro Social y posteriormente transfieran su historial crediticio.
Al respecto, la administración del Seguro Social de Estados Unidos ha publicado los pasos que deberán seguir los beneficiados de la Acción Diferida los cuales describo brevemente a continuación:
1. Presentarse en la oficina del Seguro Social más cercana a su domicilio (usted puede consultar la ubicación en www.ssa.gov/locator) donde deberá presentar la siguiente documentación:
n Solicitud para la tarjeta del Seguro Social, la cual puede obtenerse en la página www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf
n Original de la tarjeta de autorización de empleo
n Acta de nacimiento original o pasaporte vigente de su país de origen (para ver la lista completa de los documentos que puede presentar en este punto, visite la página www.ssa.gov/pubs/deferred_action.pdf.
Una vez que se han presentado los documentos antes señalados es necesario esperar la respuesta de la Administración del Seguro Social.
2. Después de haber recibido la tarjeta con su nuevo número de seguro social usted deberá transferir su historial crediticio. Muchas de las personas beneficiadas por la Acción Diferida presentaban su pago de impuestos con el número de identificación ITIN (por sus siglas en inglés) bajo el cual también habían iniciado su historial crediticio.
Para hacer el cambio del historial del ITIN a su número de Seguro Social deben seguir las siguientes acciones:
n Contactar a los bancos
o instituciones financieras donde sean cuentahabientes y solicitar el reemplazo del número ITIN por su nuevo SSN.
n Enviar una carta a los tres burós de crédito ubicados en las siguientes direcciones:

n Copia de la licencia o identificación del solicitante donde aparezca su domicilio actual.
Es recomendable mantener una copia de los documentos enviados a los burós en su expediente personal y posteriormente verificar que la información crediticia haya sido actualizada. Para ello usted puede visitar la página www.annualcreditreport.com.
3. Una vez que usted ha verificado esta información se debe dar de baja el ITIN ya que una persona no puede tener al mismo tiempo un número de identificación de impuestos (ITIN) y un número de Seguro Social.
La cancelación de su ITIN debe realizarse ante la oficina de recaudación de impuestos (IRS, por sus siglas en inglés) lo cual puede solicitarse enviando una carta a la siguiente dirección:

WASHINGTON – Undocumented immigrants who are immediate relatives of American citizens will have an easier path to permanent residency under a new Obama administration rule that could affect as many as 1 million of the estimated 11 million people unlawfully in the United States.
The rule issued Jan. 2 by the Department of Homeland Security aims to reduce the time undocumented immigrants are separated from their U.S. families while seeking legal status, officials said.
Beginning March 4, undocumented immigrants who can demonstrate that time apart from an American spouse, child or parent would create “extreme hardship” can apply for a visa without leaving the United States. Once approved, applicants would be required to leave briefly in order to return to their native country and pick up their visa.
Sources said that the administration might expand the changes to include relatives of lawful permanent residents.
The change, first proposed in April, is the latest move by the administration to use executive powers to revise immigration procedures without Congress passing a law. In August, the Obama administration launched a program to halt the deportation of young people brought to the U.S. unlawfully as children.
“This is a continuation of usurping Congress’ control over immigration,” said Mark Krikorian, executive
director of the Center for Immigration Studies, a think tank in Washington that supports tighter controls on immigration. “This waiver rule is a small piece of this broader effort to go around Congress.”
The new procedures could reduce a family’s time apart to one week in some cases, officials said. In recent years a few relatives of U.S. citizens have been killed in violence in foreign countries while waiting for their applications to be resolved, a process that could take a year or longer.
“It’s going to be a better future for me,” said Analy Olivas, 21, from Claremont, Calif., who crossed the border illegally from Mexico with her family when she was 8 and eventually married a U.S. citizen. She didn’t think she could bear to be separated from her 4-year-old son, Naythan, for an extended period, adding, “If I kept on going through the process, I was going to have to leave the country. I wasn’t ready for it.”
“The change will have a significant impact on American families by greatly reducing the time family members are separated from those they rely upon,” said Alejandro Mayorkas, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The immigration agency does not provide applicants with a specific definition of “extreme hardship,” despite requests from legal aid organizations to clarify the phrase. The agency “looks at the totality of the applicant’s circumstances and any supporting evidence,” according to the final rule

Go ahead: Eat more chocolate and shop for a
new pair of shoes.Doctor’s orders.Of course, everyone
knows they should ring in the New Year with pledges to eat healthier and exercise more.
But the experts at the Cleveland Clinic shared these seven unusual tips for happier and healthier living in 2013 on Health Hub from the Cleveland Clinic, available online at www.health.clevelandclinic.org.
“They’re still healthy — just a little more fun, too,” the Cleveland Clinic’s consumer health, wellness and medicine blog stated.
1. Eat more chocolateResearch has shown eating
chocolate can increase blood fl ow to the brain, decrease the impact of heart disease and even fi ght depression.
“Eat in moderation, though,” the Cleveland Clinic warned. Just 6.7 gram of chocolate a day, or roughly a small square of chocolate two or three times a day, are

2. Dance“Dancing burns calories,

Stimulate your brain by trying something new, such as learning phrases in a foreign language, attempting a puzzle or enrolling in a class.
“Your brain needs exercise, too,” the Cleveland Clinic experts on Health Hub pointed out.
4. Take a mental time out“We all take sick days
when physical illness strikes, but unchecked stress and depression also can have negative effects on your health, including heart disease and
anxiety,” the Cleveland Clinic’s consumer
health blog said. “Use a
vacation or personal day when you really need it and do something you fi nd relaxing.”
5. Drink coffeeAccording to the Cleveland
Clinic, research has shown drinking two or three 8-ounce cups of coffee daily can reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease by as much as 40 percent and Alzheimer’s disease by up to 20 percent. Remember, though, moderation is key, just as with chocolate.
6. Go shoe shopping.For women, replace high
heels with shoes with a thicker heel that’s 2¼ inches or smaller. The Cleveland Clinic also recommends opting for square-toed shoes rather than pointy-toed versions.
To be sure of a good fi t, the Cleveland Clinic’s Health Hub suggested, “try shoes on at the end of the day, when your feet are at their largest.”
7. Laugh“Research is not defi nitive
on whether laughter is the best medicine, but studies have shown laughter’s positive effects on blood fl ow and sleep, among other things,” the Cleveland Clinic stated.
Regardless, the Health Hub concluded, “a little more
humor in your life can’t hurt.”

Si la receta le pide 1 taza de manteca entonces use ¾ taza de aceite. Poco a poco se va a acostumbrar y verá como la masa se puede modifi car para que le quede con buen sabor y una buena consistencia.
� 4. El aceite: Hasta para las recetas que piden aceite como los panes de fruta, los famosos brownies, galletas o panes de plátano o de banana, se pueden modifi car usando la mitad de aceite y la otra mitad con puré de manzana.
� 5. El azúcar y la sal: No batalle, solo use menos cantidad.
No es necesario usar todo el azúcar o la sal que piden las recetas. Pero, si es bueno que lo haga poco a poco para irse acostumbrando y verifi car que todavía queden sus platillos exquisitos.
¿Les conté que me encanta el pollo frito? Con una simple modifi cación se puede hacer nuggets o trozos de pollo al horno empanizado. El truco es usar una bandeja de hornear y colocar encima una bandeja de rejilla (las que se usan para enfriar galletas) para que se cocine bien. Corte el pollo en trozos, páselo por una mezcla de huevos y luego por la mezcla de pan. Hornear a 500˚F por 3 minutos de cada lado.
Los tiempos han cambiado y hasta yo me debo acostumbrar al sabor más ligero. Inténtelo. La mayoría de las recetas se pueden adaptar para bajarle las calorías y empiece con un cambio uno por uno para encontrar el punto perfecto.

The Colorado Rapids reached into the South American well again, signing
Eduador national team defender Diego Calderon, the team said last week.
Calderon’s departure from club Liga de Quito in Ecuador to the Rapids of MLS had been reported for weeks by South American media. His paperwork as an international player, though, is finally near complete in the U.S.
“Diego is a versatile, talented defender who will come in and compete for a spot in our back line,” Rapids technical director Paul Bravo said in a release. “He can play in the middle or on the left.”
The Rapids last season struggled some on their backline, allowing the third most goals in the Western Conference and finishing the season at minus-6 in goal differential.
Colorado since has lost defender Hunter Freeman to the MLS supplemental draft.
The 26-year-old Calderon spent most of his career at Liga de Quito in Ecuador’s first division, helping them to three league titles and the 2008 Copa Libertadores.
Calderon has played with Ecuador’s national team in each of its World Cup qualifying matches, and the team is 5-2-2 and trailing only Argentina in the standings.
Terms of Calderon’s contract were not released, but he will take up an international spot on the Rapids’ roster.
The Rapids late last season signed defensive midfielder Hendry Thomas, a member of the Honduras national team. And Colorado in 2012 was led by Argentina’s Martin Rivero (team-high eight assists) and Colombia’s Jaime Castrillon (team leading eight goals) — both first-year players.

The NFL’s wild-card weekend is over, with nary an upset. Moving
on are division winners Green Bay, Houston and Baltimore, along with NFC West runner-up Seattle and the only rookie quarterback still standing: Russell Wilson.
Ahead are some daunting challenges as the Ravens visit Denver, the Texans go to New England, the Packers head to San Francisco and the Seahawks journey to Atlanta.
Only the Seahawks-Falcons isn’t a rematch.
Seattle isn’t intimidated one bit about facing the NFC’s top seed.
“Despite the fact that we have a ‘nobody’ team,” Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman said after Sunday’s convincing 24-14 comeback win at Washington, “a team not full of first-rounders and things like that, we have a lot of guys that play at a high level.”
Of course, so do the Falcons (13-3), Broncos (13-3), Patriots (12-4) and 49ers (11-4-1).
“They have a great coach and a great quarterback and they have great role players on their team,” Texans running back Arian Foster said of the Patriots, who routed Houston 42-14 last month. “I have a lot of respect for them, but we can play ball, too.”
The Texans beat Cincinnati 19-13
on Saturday, then Green Bay took out Minnesota 24-10. In Sunday’s other game, Baltimore eliminated Indianapolis 24-9.
The playoffs continue Saturday with Baltimore at Denver, followed by Green Bay at San Francisco.
On Sunday, it’s Seattle at Atlanta, followed by Houston at New England.

Ravens at BroncosNot only is Baltimore thrilled to
keep playing and keep star linebacker Ray Lewis’ career going, but the Ravens got the opponent they sought for the divisional round.
“I wanted Denver,” said Anquan Boldin, who set a franchise record with 145 yards receiving, including the clinching touchdown against Indianapolis (11-6). “Because they beat us. We’ll make it different.”
Lewis made 13 tackles in his first game back in nearly three months. He ended his last home game in Baltimore before his impending retirement by lining up at fullback for the final kneel-down. Then Lewis went into a short version of his trademark dance before being mobbed by teammates.
Joe Flacco became the first quarterback to win a postseason game in each of his first five seasons and John Harbaugh is the first coach to do so.
Here come the big boys
“I love our team,” Lewis said, “and I’m really looking forward to going out there and playing them next week.”
Packers at 49ersIt’s been a long time since these
teams met on kickoff weekend, and much has changed.
Green Bay has become a bit more balanced on offense and somewhat stingier on defense than it was back in September. San Francisco has second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick instead of Alex Smith, and receiver Michael Crabtree finally has developed into a threat.
The Packers held league rushing king Adrian Peterson to 99 yards in beating the Vikings (10-7), 100 yards
less than he got on them the previous week.
Seahawks at FalconsAtlanta has flopped in its last three
playoff games, including losing at home to Green Bay two years ago in a similar scenario.
Seattle won’t bring as high-powered an offense as the Packers did to Atlanta, but it’s versatile enough with the creative Wilson, bulldozing halfback Marshawn Lynch and a deep group of receivers.
The most significant challenge for the Falcons, though, will be a defense that completely shut down the Redskins.
“Seventy yards in 3½ quarters is
ridiculously good defense,” coach Pete Carroll said after his Seahawks won their sixth straight.
Texans at PatriotsBoth teams say the romp by New
England on Dec. 10 is not an indicator of what’s ahead. For their sake, the Texans better hope that is true.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick fully expects a tighter game.
“When you play a team twice during the season, the games are totally different. They never go the same way,” Belichick said. “As far as plays and calls and things like that matching up, I’m sure they’ll have some new wrinkles. I’m sure we’ll have some, too. It will be totally different.”

LAS VEGAS — Dismayed that family members are spread out over the house, each with a separate PC or tablet? Lenovo has something it believes will get them back together: a PC the size of a coffee table that works like a gigantic tablet and lets four people use it at once.
Lenovo Group Ltd., one of the world’s largest PC makers, is calling the IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC the first “interpersonal computer” — as opposed to a “personal computer.”
At first glance, it looks like a regular all-in-one machine in the vein of the iMac: It’s a 27-inch screen with the innards of a Windows 8 computer built into it, and it can stand up on a table.
But you can pick it up off
the table, unhook the power cord and lay it flat for games of “Monopoly.” It’s big enough to fit four people around it, and the screen can respond to ten fingers touching it at the same time.
As a tablet, it’s a monstrosity. The screen is the size of eight iPads stitched together, and it weighs 15 pounds. It’s almost as homebound as a flat-panel TV.
The Table PC will include plastic “strikers” for “Air Hockey,” and joysticks that attach to the screen with suction cups for other games, including multiplayer shooter “Raiding Company.”
In a demonstration at the International CES, photos and videos could be rotated with fingers. Spreading five fingers at once on the screen cleared the screen of clutter,
while squeezing them together brought the photos and videos back.
Lenovo, a Chinese company that owns IBM Corp.’s former PC business, said the Table PC will go on sale this summer starting at $1,699.
Microsoft Corp. pioneered the idea of a table PC with the Surface, a PC with a 30-inch touch-sensitive screen released in 2008. It was designed for store displays and other commercial applications. The concept is now called PixelSense, as Microsoft started using the “Surface” name for an unrelated tablet computer last year.
More recently, Sony Corp. released the Tap 20, an all-in-one PC that can also be laid flat. But it’s smaller than the Lenovo model, at 20 inches.
