Introduction The Savant SmartEnergy Monitor (SEM-­1024) connects to your electrical panel via clip-­on current transformers, and to your Savant SmartSystem via the local area network. You can monitor each and every aspect of electricity usage, from appliances to heating and lighting, and view your entire electricity usage or generation at home or remotely. The SEM-­1024 uses the RacePoint Blueprint™design tool to integrate the Savant SmartEnergy Monitor solution.

Note: The SEM-­250A1, SEM-­400A1, and SEM-­600A1 require the use of da Vinci 5.2.3. Lead Length Consideration: Savant recommends that you do not increase the lengths of the above current transformer leads, which are 8 feet. Increasing the lead lengths may cause inaccurate measurements. The lead lengths can be decreased without causing inaccurate measurements. Important: The use of the above parts with any other Current Transformer or Voltage Sensor product will void the limited warranty, and may cause an electrical or fire hazard. The Current Transformers offered with the SmartEnergy Monitor are calibrated to offer the optimal performance.

SmartEnergy Monitor Considerations

Safety Every effort has been made in providing for the safe and secure installation of the SmartEnergy Monitor. The installation of the SEM-­1024 requires the removal of the cover of the main electrical circuit breaker panel. After the circuit breaker panel cover has been removed, the potential hazard of shock, burn, or even electrocution now exists. Do not attempt to complete this installation unless you are very familiar with the electrical components and operation of the circuit breaker panel. Even when the main circuit breaker has been turned to the “OFF” position, certain areas within the circuit breaker panel may still be electrified. Do not attempt installation unless you know where these electrified areas are.

WARNING -­ These servicing instructions are for use by qualified personnel only. To reduce the risk of electric shock, Do not perform any servicing other than that contained in these operational instructions, unless you are qualified to do so.

Before You Start Do not begin installation until you have read the “Safety” section of this manual, and read all instructions before beginning the installation.

Estimated Installation Time: Thirty minutes to several hours when performed by a professional installer—dependent on the number of current transformers, number of SmartEnergy monitors, single-­phase or 3-­phase installations, and the complexity of the energy-­monitoring configuration. All wiring in the United States must be installed in accordance with the latest adopted edition of the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70, NEC) and state or local requirements. All wiring in Canada must be installed in accordance with the latest adopted edition of the Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.2 CEC, Part I) and any provincial or local requirements. The SEM-­1024 setup provides the following information:

Installation Site Ensure the SEM-­1024 installation site provides adequate ventilation for proper cooling and space to access the SEM-­1024 panel connectors. If mounting on the wall, Savant recommends using the supplied mounting brackets.

Savant ID for SmartEnergy Monitor Write down the 16-­character Savant ID (UID) from the label on the back of the SmartEnergy Monitor. The Savant ID is an alphanumeric string ending in four zeros as shown below.

The Savant ID for the SmartEnergy Monitor and other components that require a Savant ID must be added in the RacePoint Blueprint configuration (see Add Savant IDs). You cannot create a valid configuration without the Savant IDs. Write down the Savant IDs when unpacking the components. You will find the sticker displaying the Savant ID on the component.

Limitations Review the following SmartEnergy Monitor operational limitations: Current Transformers (CTs)

• SEM-­1024 is only suitable for services of 600A or less, or 1200A with parallel 600A feeds.

• SEM-­1024 is only suitable for services with maximum 500 MCM conductors. Note: MCM = A circular mil (CM) is a figure that represents the cross-­sectional area of a circular-­section conductor whose diameter is one mil (i.e. one-­thousandth of an inch). Common MCM sizes in the electrical trade are 500, 350, 250, and the circular mil is a measurement unique to North America.

• If your main circuit breaker or fuse panel is larger than 600A, SEM-­1024 WILL NOT work.

• If your main service circuit conductors (wires) are larger than 1-­inch diameter, SEM-­1024 WILL NOT work.

Power Supply • If you have a 230V AC 50Hz service typical in most areas outside North America,

SEM-­1024 WILL NOT work.

Connections and Status Indicator Left Side

1 Input Channels (1-­16)

2-­pin termination connectors attach to Input Channels from current transformers (CTs) (left side-­positive, right side-­ground).

2 Status LED (bi-­color)

• Green indicates the Host has established communications with the embedded system.

• Green flashing indicates the embedded system is ready (running with DHCP IP address), but the Host has not established communications with the embedded system.

• Off indicates the embedded processor is resetting or is not powered up;; or is booting the embedded firmware.

• Red indicates the Host has determined the firmware needs to be updated, but a problem occurred during the process that will initiate a reset.

• Red flashing indicates the embedded firmware is running, but has not received a DHCP IP Address.

• Amber indicates the Host is currently updating the embedded firmware.

• Amber flashing indicates the embedded system has a valid link-­local IP Address and is waiting to connect to the Host.

Right Side

1 Reset button Resets the factory default DHCP mode. Press and hold the Reset button

for 5+ seconds. 2 Data – Ethernet

Speed LED 10/100 Base-­T auto-­negotiating port Green indicates an Ethernet speed of 100 Mb, when Off indicates an Ethernet speed of 10 Mb.

3 Data – Ethernet Speed LED

10/100 Base-­T auto-­negotiating port Orange indicates Ethernet data activity.

4 RS232 serial port

RJ-­45 port used to transmit and receive serial binary data transmission. Reserved for future use.

5 12VAC input power

Connects 12V AC input power to SEM-­1024.

6 Savant recommends using the ground connector to achieve a greater level of safety from electrical hazards to persons and protection from electromagnet interference (EMI).

7 Voltage Sensors (1-­3)

2-­pin termination connectors attach to Voltage Sensor line input connectors (left side-­positive, right side-­ground) for each of 3 separate phases.

8 Input Channels (17-­24)

2-­pin termination connectors attach to Input Channels from current transformers (CTs) (left side-­positive, right side-­ground).

Input Channel and Voltage Sensor Connector Polarities Ensure the black wire is connected to right side of the 2-­pin termination connector when connecting to the CT and VT inputs on the SEM-­1024.

Note -­ When connecting to the VT transformer, refer to the External Voltage Sensor (SEM-­VT01) diagram.

Installation To install the current transformers, voltage sensors and SmartEnergy Monitor (SEM-­1024) unit, do the following:

IMPORTANT: Turn off all power to the circuit breaker panel by turning off the main breaker or main switch. 1. Turn off all power to the circuit breaker panel.

Installing and Connecting the Current Transformers CAUTION -­ Only use Savant supplied current transformers with the SEM-­1024. All Savant current transformers are internally shunted (333 mV at rated current), and therefore, inherently safe compared to other commercially available CTs. In addition, they are also calibrated for optimal performance with the SEM-­1024. CAUTION -­ If this is a combination panel, the lugs on the primary side of the main breaker are probably still hot. CAUTION -­ The CT installation along with any other task requiring the removal of the electrical panel cover MUST be performed by an electrician or qualified individual. All local electrical codes and rules must be obeyed. Install the Current Transformers as follows:

• The 20A and 50A CTs must be installed with the arrows pointing in the direction of the current flow (towards the load) or away from the main breaker to maintain the correct polarity. If the CTs are not installed in this manner, the readings will be wrong. Install one 20A or 50A CT over each required circuit output from the electrical panel by prying the clip away from the housing. After placing the CT around the power line close the CT tightly and ensure the clip snaps securely back into place.

• The 150A CTs have a label on one side. The CTs must be installed with the label closest to the source (away from the load).

Note-­ If the power source is power producing, such as solar panels or aquatic energy, the label must be located closest to the source, such as the solar panel.

Install one 150A CT over each incoming power line by pressing on the handle to open the split-­core then clipping it over the power line as shown below for a single-­phase installation and on the next page for a 3-­phase installation.

Note – Do not install the CT over the neutral (N) (grounded) conductor.

3-­Phase Installation Diagram

1. Ensure that the two sides of the split core CTs are mated tightly together over the main in-­

coming power line (they should fit loosely around the wires). 2. Ensure that the two sides of each split core CT used in the installation are mated tightly

together over the single or double-­pole breakers. 3. Connect the split core CTs used in your specific installation to the SEM-­1024 monitor(s) by

plugging the 2-­pin screw-­down connectors from the CT leads to the mating female connectors of the SEM-­1024 monitor input channels which are labeled – See Figure above.

Note -­ Ensure the black wire is connected to right side of the 2-­pin termination connector when connecting the to the CT inputs on the SEM-­1024. Note -­ The included screw-­down 2-­pin connectors are added to each bare wire CT leads. These connectors are keyed and can only be inserted one way – do not force.

Installing and Connecting the Voltage Sensors The Voltage Sensor (SEM-­VT01) is a highly accurate voltage transformer that steps the primary phase voltage of 0 to 300V AC down to 0 -­ 0.333V AC secondary voltage. This functionality allows you to monitor the 0 -­ 0.333V AC secondary voltages safely with the SEM-­1024. The Voltage Sensor connector is used to measure the incoming line voltage, which allows you to take and record more accurate energy readings. The Voltage Sensors must be used when measuring bidirectional circuits and when measuring any 3-­phase systems;; one Voltage Sensor is required for each phase (see SEM-­VT01, SmartEnergy Voltage Sensor). For 1-­phase power, the use of a Voltage Sensor is optional if higher accuracy is not required unless you want to measure bidirectional power flow. The 1-­phase is connected the same way as the 3-­phase system. The SEM-­1024 will monitor the voltage that the AC power supply is plugged

into for power calculations. In this application, it is best to plug the power supply in as close to the electric panel box as possible. The user needs to indicate if there is a Voltage Sensor connected to the Voltage Sensor input connector on the SEM-­1024. This is done by a selection of the voltage source in the RacePoint Blueprint. If there is no Voltage Sensor then select AC Power Supply. Important -­ Ensure that the right side of the Voltage Sensor (SEM-­VT01) output is connected to the left side of the Voltage Sensor (1, 2, 3) input connector on the SEM-­1024. Savant requires a licensed electrician to wire from the high voltage side (primary) of the main electric panel box to the voltage transformer to meet the electrical codes of the municipality. Wiring the low voltage side (secondary) from the voltage transformer to the SEM-­1024, must be done by qualified personnel only.

External Voltage Sensor (SEM-­VT01)

Installing and Connecting the SmartEnergy Monitor 1. Determine the best location to mount the SEM-­1024 monitor.

a. Choose a location where it will not interfere with existing equipment or wiring.

b. Choose a location within the CT lead lengths (8 ft / 2.4 m).

c. The SEM-­1024 maybe mounted using the side-­mount brackets.

d. The SEM-­1024 may also be mounted in an appropriate utility panel, which meets all electrical codes for your specific region.

2. Connect the CT wiring to the Input Channels connectors and voltage sensor wiring to the

Voltage Sensor connectors.

3. Arrange and tie-­wrap all the wiring in a neat and safe manner. 4. Replace the Electric Panel cover following all electrical safety guidelines. 5. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Data port on the SEM-­1024 and to the Local Area Network

(LAN).

6. Connect the ground wire from the SEM-­1024 grounding screw to a proper grounding system. Savant recommends using the ground connector to achieve a greater level of safety from electrical hazards to persons and protection from electromagnet interference (EMI).

7. Connect the 12V AC power supply to the SEM-­1024 12VAC connector and connect to AC

outlet.

Note: Source power for the 12V AC power supply must be obtained from a surge-­protected circuit.

8. Turn the power back On.

Solar (Photovoltaic), Wind or Geothermal Installation Installing Solar (photovoltaic), Wind, Geothermal, Auxiliary Generator or other ‘energy producing’ components should be completed after the installation instructions have been followed for the installation of the primary SEM-­1024 monitoring unit. Assuming that you have successfully installed SEM-­1024 as detailed above, it is time to connect a secondary1 SEM-­1024 monitor to your Solar, Wind, Geothermal or Auxiliary Generator system. While there are many different variations in solar (photovoltaic) connections, we are presenting the installation of the SEM-­1024 in the most common scenario. Solar panels typically connect to an inverter, which changes DC (direct current) to AC (alternating current). In most cases it will be 120/240V. The connection can tie into the main switch/circuit breaker, a transfer switch, a junction box, or a splitter box, etc.

In the case of an auxiliary generator, it will likely tie into a transfer switch—generally speaking, a generator is not run in parallel with the utility. Note -­ You will use two current transformers if 240V, or a single CT if 120V.

In the following drawing, the current transformers are connected to a secondary SmartEnergy monitor and electrical sub-­panel.

Interconnect the Network The SmartEnergy Monitor requires enterprise class/commercial grade network equipment in order to handle the IP traffic between Savant Network Equipment. When configuring the network ensure that all of the connected Savant units are on the same local area network (subnet or LAN). Being on the same subnet allows the Savant units to locate each other using the Bonjour network protocol.

Network Changes Require Rebooting the SmartEnergy Monitor The embedded processor used in the SmartEnergy Monitor needs to be rebooted after switching to a new network with a new IP address range. If you do not reboot, the SmartEnergy Monitor will not sense the network and IP address changes. The Status LED on the SmartEnergy Monitor will start to flash and log reports in System Monitor.

RacePoint Blueprint Configuration Setting up Savant's Energy Monitoring solution involves attaching physical sensors (Current Transformers and Voltage Sensors) via monitoring devices to the circuits of interest, and then describing those connections in the Energy Monitor configuration within RacePoint Blueprint. Ensure the correct Savant ID has been assigned to each applicable Savant device and that these devices have been assigned connections in the local area network that are accessible from the host.

Open RacePoint Blueprint 1. Download and install the current version of RacePoint Blueprint.

2. Open a new RacePoint Blueprint configuration.

Add the SmartEnergy Monitor to the Configuration To add the SmartEnergy Monitor to a RacePoint Blueprint configuration, refer to the following example: 1. To add the SmartEnergy Monitor to a configuration, access the Component Library by

clicking on Show Library on the Toolbar. 2. You can filter down the Component Library list by choosing a category and/or manufacturer

from the pull-­down menus or search for a component directly using the search field.

3. Select SmartEnergy (SmartEnergy, SEM-­1024) and drag and drop it in either the Zone/Component List or in the Layout view.

4. In the Layout view, the SmartEnergy shows the default Energy and Resource Monitor

name.

5. When prompted, the default Energy and Resource Monitor name should be changed to suit the installation. Particularly in large multiple-­energy monitor device installations, a clear and recognizable name should be chosen, since it will be used later in the installation process. For this example, the name Energy and Resource Monitor will be retained.

6. Highlight the Energy and Resource Monitor in the Layout window. 7. Click Show Inspector on the Toolbar. The Inspector window opens. 8. Click on the Device tab and ensure the Edit checkbox is checked to add the Savant ID (UID)

to the Energy and Resource Monitor in the configuration.

Add Savant IDs The Savant IDs (UIDs) for the Energy and Resource Monitor and other Savant components (host, for example) must be included in the RacePoint Blueprint configuration. Find the sticker displaying the Savant ID (UIDs) on the Savant component. 1. Enter the Savant ID (UID) in the appropriate Inspector window text field.

2. When all of the components have been added to the appropriate zones you can close the

Components window by clicking Hide Library in the Toolbar.

3. Drag the components from Zone/Component List into the Layout Window (including the Energy and Resource Monitor). Avoid placing components so that they overlap. The Layout window will automatically grow in size if a component is dragged downward or to the right. You can change the zoom level by adjusting the slider below the Layout window.

4. Wire the Data (Ethernet) port to your network switch or other Ethernet source.

Energy Monitor Configuration Dialog After the SmartEnergy Monitor has been configured in the Layout view you need to access the Services window to initiate the Energy Monitor Configuration Dialog. To do this process, refer to the following steps. 1. Open the Energy Monitor configuration window:

Tools>Settings>Energy Monitor

Important: For this configuration to function correctly, all Energy Monitor devices must be laid out, and services generated before using this configuration dialog.

Circuit Description: This category describes the physical wiring to which one or more Current Transformers are attached.

• A circuit must consist of at least one phase channel, and may have up to three.

• Phase channels can be added or removed by only selecting a phase channel within the circuit and pressing "+" or "-­" located in the bottom left corner of the dialog. New circuits will have one phase added automatically.

Classification: A circuit may be classified as Consumption, Bidirectional, Net Power or Net Power (Bidirectional).

• Consumption refers to any circuit that consumes power, which is the most typical kind of circuit.

• Bidirectional should be used for PV/Solar cells, wind turbines, generators, or any other power generated locally.

• Net Power is a special indicator for monitoring the main wiring trunk of a facility.

• Net Power (Bidirectional) should be used when monitoring mains where power may be

pushed back to the grid.

Note: If any Net Power or Net Power (Bidirectional) is stipulated, all Net Power coming into the facility must be monitored and configured in order for the end-­user UI to be presented with meaningful totals. If the main trunk(s) are not monitored, Savant's software will use the other circuit totals to approximate the appropriate totals.

Group: This category provides for the end-­user categories to be stipulated, allowing for easier navigation and viewing of the energy use data. You may either select one of the predefined groups (Appliances, HVAC, Lighting, Rooms) by clicking on the selection arrows, or you may click the text field to enter a custom group. If a group is set, it will define the top-­level navigation presented to the end-­user.

Monitoring Device: Under this category you must choose the specific physical monitoring device, such as Energy and Resource Monitor that is connected to the circuit.

Channel: Under this category you select the physical port on the energy-­monitoring device to which the Current Transformer for that circuit is connected.

Size: Under this category you must select the capacity of the Current Transformers used for the circuit. This capacity must exactly match the 20A, 50A, 150A or other supported CT size physically clamped onto that circuit. Voltage Source: Under this category you can select from the available voltage monitoring sources that correspond to the phase channels of the circuit.

For the best and most accurate monitoring results, ensure that the voltage of each phase channel is accurately measured as close to the trunk as possible, and that every circuit phase channel is correctly matched to it's corresponding voltage sensor.

External Voltage Transformer sensors will provide more accurate voltage and power reporting, but must be physically connected to the correct phase and each phase channel must have the correct voltage sensor selected here.

Parent Circuit: Use this category when using a WPS (Wi-­Fi SmartPlug) so that the energy reading from this device does not double-­report on the energy consumption total.

Control: Under this category, for those circuits that have Savant-­controllable resources, double click on Choose… to be presented with a Service or Zone selector. Convenient links will be presented within Savant's end-­user Energy Monitoring UI to control these resources and impact energy utilization.

"+": Clicking this box will do the following: • If a circuit level row is selected or there is no selection, a new circuit will be added. • If a phase channel is selected, a new phase will be added (up to 3).

"-­": Clicking this box removes a selected phase channel or circuit per the selection.

Import: Clicking this button will import a copy of the energy monitor table configuration that has previously been exported with the Export option. This function is useful for backing up before making changes, or it can be used for template management in installations that are very similar.

Export: Clicking this button saves a copy of the energy monitor table configuration for use with the Import function described above.

Appendix: Historical Data for SmartEnergy Monitor Software Below is a summary of the historical data for the SmartEnergy Monitor software. The SmartEnergy Monitor software records real / active (W) power averages in a database on the master host Mac mini. The software is designed to balance the ability to view detailed recent usage information within limited long term storage capabilities by maintaining more detail for the most recent data and less as it ages. The data is stored as follows, and is not installer configurable at present:

• The most recent 5-­second power averages are recorded and stored for 1 hour. • The most recent 2-­minute power averages are recorded and stored for 1 day. • The most recent 15-­minute power averages are recorded and stored for 7 days. • The 1-­hour power averages are recorded and stored permanently.

The integrity of the data is checked periodically, and in the event of a problem the software will archive the data for later expert recovery (if desired) and begin recording to a new database. The size of the data will vary based upon the number of SEMs installed. Currently an approximate average of 12 MB of storage per SEM per year is required. As these database files are in status files, a redundant host should sync up appropriately and maintain the history continuity.

ELECTRIC SHOCK: The 100-­240V AC, 50-­60 Hz source power poses an electric shock hazard that has the potential to cause serious injury to installers and end-­users.

ELECTRICAL DISCONNECT: The 100-­240V AC, 50-­60 Hz source power outlet and power supply input power sockets should be easily accessible to disconnect power in the event of an electrical hazard or malfunction.

ELECTRICAL DISCONNECT: The 12V AC power outlet should be easily accessible to disconnect power in the event of an electrical malfunction.

Weight Injury Prevention

WEIGHT INJURY: Installing some of the Savant Controllers require two installers to ensure safe handling during installation. Failure to use two installers may result in injury.
