Here is our list of current and upcoming wine and food-related events for 2012. The list may be updated at any time, so watch this space…. (Click on the bold Green highlights to access websites for more information). We have separate lists   of restaurant special offers and wine farms which offer picnics, which are updated as we receive them from the restaurants, farms or their PR agencies. We also have a special list of Valentine’s events. Click on the underlined, bold words above to access them. Not all the events are in the Western Cape and we are, occasionally, told about events in Johannesburg, London, and other cities and towns.

UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE:until 15 July 2012. ART EXHIBITION: Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of Herman Wald, SA Jewish Museum, 88 Hatfield Street Gardens Cape Town. Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm, Friday 10am to 2pm. Sculptures, Sketches, Writings and Audio Visual Displays. A major South African artist, Herman Wald is currently having his biggest exhibition in Cape Town, forty two years after his death and the digital-age retrospective breaks new grounds in the Arts market, offering online global access to the entire collection and its catalogue. The Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of Herman Wald is on exhibit at the South African Jewish Museum, Cape Town until 15 July 2012. On show are almost 60 sculptures, more than 40 sketches, writings and audio visual displays. Gallery hours are Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm and Fridays 10am to 2pm. Sculptor Herman Wald would have approved of the bold initiative, said his son Louis Wald who was only twelve years old when his father died, leaving a legacy of over 650 castings of his works but little money to sustain his family in Johannesburg. Hungarian-born, Herman Wald the son of a Rabbi, challenged the Orthodox Jewish restriction against carved images of the human form. After studying, doing apprenticeships and working in Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London he moved to South Africa in 1937 to escape the persecutions of the Nazi era and established his studio in Johannesburg. The death of his mother and her family in a concentration camp during the Second World War motivated him to produce a series of public works which confirmed his standing in the Arts world. The first, entitled Symbol for Chaos and Hope, and known as Kria, is the rendering of garments and a symbol of Jewish mourning, originating from biblical days and still practiced today. Admission Fees to the Museum and exhibition are: Adults R 40, South African Pensioners and students R25, Children under 16 years of age free. Valid Identification Required. The Museum caters for group tours by prior arrangement.

Friday, 25th May Ernst Gouws & Co. Family wines paired dinner at the Vineyard Hotel & Spa. Owner and wine maker Ernst Gouws will showcase his wines at a four-course wine-paired dinner. Ernst and his wife Gwenda are the soul and drive behind the family-owned wine company, with four generations of the Gouws family intrinsically linked to the fine art of winemaking. Gouws studied winemaking at the Weinsberg Wine School in Germany during the 1970's. During the early 1980's he worked in the Champagne and Bordeaux regions in France, and then spent 15 years actively involved with the development of a number of private wine estates in the Cape Winelands, including Saxenburg, Rhebokskloof and Hoopenburg. In 2004 he fulfilled his lifelong dream by going solo and launching the family flagship label, Ernst Gouws & Co. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to book well in advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local and resident guests. Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout the evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. So whether you are looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent with a group of friends – the experience is bound to be a memorable one. Each wine-paired dinner is either four- or five-course, depending on the wines served. Ahead of each event we conduct a tasting where The Square’s sous chef, the winemaker and select members of the media as well as the hotels food and wine committee get together. It’s an opportunity to taste the wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a menu specifically paired to the wines in question. For those guests who’d like to make a night of it, the Vineyard Hotel & Spa is offering a special rate which includes the four-course wine paired dinner, accommodation and breakfast the following morning. Single rooms are available at R900 and double rooms at R1500 per room per night. Reservations

before, Trophy Wine Show patrons can expect to sample the very best wines entered into the 40 different categories. The judging panel has been chaired by leading wine authority Michael Fridjhon since the inception of the show in 2002. The 2012 panel comprised three international judges of high standing and six local judges covering a broad range of expertise. The international judges were: Brian Croser (Winemaker and industry icon, Australia); Anthony Rose (UK and Asian wine columnist) and Tom Cannavan (Scottish wine blogger – see www.wine-pages.com and UK wine broadcaster). The South African judges were Ginette de Fleuriot CWM (Marketing Manager, Vinimark), Gary Jordan (proprietor-winemaker, Jordan Wines), Christian Eedes (wine writer and blogger – see www.whatidranklastnight.co.za), Angela Lloyd (wine judge and writer), James Pietersen (head sommelier of Belthazar and Balducci restaurants) and François Rautenbach (Head, Premier Wine Programme, Singita Lodges). The participation of a team of associate judges, drawn from the pool of rising South African winemaking and judging talent, is included in a supportive capacity. Since these tastings include an array of the top achievers in both regular and lesser-known grape varieties, they serve to showcase the best of South African wines. Both events are held shortly after the announcement of results and while there are still stocks of the top wines for collectors seeking to add the best of current release Cape wines to their cellars. The list of wines and producers in attendance at the public tastings are kept under wraps until 30 May when the Most Successful Producer and the full results of the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show 2012 will be announced on www.trophywineshow.co.za. All wines present at the tastings can be ordered at special prices via Makro at the public tastings. Secure underground parking is available at the hotel and neighbouring shopping malls. Bookings: Ticket sales via www.computicket.com or call 083 915 8000 or 011 340 8000. To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to book well in advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local and resident guests,” says Davies. “Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout the evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. So whether you are looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent with a group of friends – the experience is bound to be a memorable one.” Each wine-paired dinner is either four- or five-course, depending on the wines served. “Ahead of each event we conduct a tasting where The Square’s sous chef, the winemaker and select members of the media as well as the hotels food and wine committee get together. It’s an opportunity to taste the wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a menu specifically paired to the wines in question,” Davies explained. “The combination of the tasting session and then experiencing the end product – the actual dinner – is a fascinating journey, allowing us to ensure that the end-product is always of the absolute highest standard, something we believe our guests will experience with every paired event.” The cost of the dinners is R265 pp for the four-course and R315 pp for the five-course. Davies and his team have also put together exclusive stay-over packages that include the dinner for guests attending the events. For the five-course dinner, a single room is R950, while a double room is R800 per person sharing. For the four-course paired dinner, a single room is R900 and a double room is R750 per person sharing.
