Mary Stanton Willis Doll, 84, of Louisville, died Tue, June 13, 2012. She is prede- ceased by her hus- band, A. Robert Doll; her parents, Golder Sandidge Willis and the Honorable George L. Willis, Jr; and her brothers, Alan Sand- idge Willis and George L. Willis III. She is survived by her son, A. Robert Doll, Jr. (Diane); daughter, Mary Angela Doll Dworin (Richard); grandchildren, Brian Potts (Abigail) and Ruthie Dworin; a great-granddaughter, Lily Potts. In addi- tion, "Aunt Mary Stanton" leaves be- hind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mary Stan- ton was a natural art- ist. Everything she touched became beau- tiful. She grew up in Shelbyville, KY. She and her brother George were raised by their lovely and cou- rageous mother after their father died when Mary Stanton was twelve; their little brother Alan was hit by a car and died six months later. Under the very firm guid- ance of her mother, Mary Stanton grew up to be an accom- plished pianist with a deep love for music, history, and garden- ing. All the ingredi- ents of her long and productive life came together at the Col- lege of William and Mary. She developed a life-long love for co- lonial and English his- tory, living among the colonial buildings, homes, and English- style gardens of Wil- liamsburg as she stud- ied the classics. She became a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and was its president in her se- nior year. And she met the tennis jock, A. Robert Doll, who would be her hus- band until his death in 2009, only months short of their sixtieth anniversary. After graduating from Wil- liam and Mary, Mary Stanton and Bob were married in 1950. They stayed in Williams- burg until Bob fin- ished law school and then lived briefly in Washington, D. C. In 1953 the Dolls moved to Louisville, where in close and loving part- nership they built their life together. In Louisville, Mary Stan- ton made life-long friends through her memberships and par- ticipation in the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association, Women's Club of Lou- isville, Filson Club, J.B. Speed Art Mu- seum, Pendennis Club, Louisville Boat Club, Harmony Land- ing Country Club, Douglas Blvd. Chris- tian Church, Calvin Presbyterian Church (where she directed the children's choir), and First Christian Church of Louisville. She was also a mem- ber of the Chicago Bo- tanic Gardens and a charter member of the Bailey-Matthews Shell Club in Sanibel, Fl. Mary Stanton loved Louisville because of its beauty and long history. Of the many projects she was in- volved in, some of those closest to her heart were Locust Grove, Farmington, the Edison House, and above all, her own home and gardens. Among the last gar- dens Mary Stanton designed was for her granddaughter's school, Louisville Classical Academy. The funeral service will be at 11am Mon, June 18 at First Christian Church 7700 US Hwy 42 at Wolf Pen Road; Lou- isville. Visitation 1-5pm Sun Pearson's 149 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville.
