Letter from the President

As you will see in this edition of Network 34, the planning is well under way for the 30th Conference of the ISSR in Santiago de Compostela (July 27-31, 2009), whose theme will be The Challenges of Religious Diversity. I went there with the General Secretary last November, and we came to the conclusion that the University of Santiago de Compostela offers hospitality, as well as pleasant and practical working and living conditions for our next conference. I would really like to thank Juan-Luis Pintos and his team for the work they've already done (and for what's to come!), making sure that our next conference takes place under ideal circumstances. Dear friends of the ISSR, let me tell you that many surprises are in store for you in the administrative and cultural capital of Galicia. As a city recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Santiago de Compostela has a number of assets that not only attract pilgrims, but also tourists, travellers, writers, artists and scientists. This city is shaped in many ways by its multicultural outlook and its openness to the rest of the world, making it just as suitable for welcoming a conference of sociologists – including those who study religion! – as it is for traditional pilgrims. And for a group comprised of French and English speakers like us, what better way of making our way there than to do as the pilgrims do: take the English route from the north or the French route from the east? Not to forget the Portuguese and Spanish routes from the south and southeast. Spanish will of course be spoken, alongside English and French, during the opening session (with a translation), and will also be used with English and French in some of the thematic sessions.

In Santiago de Compostela, there will be as many of us, perhaps even more, than there were at Leipzig, which already beat the previous record. Judge for yourself: the programme that Karel Dobbelaere has drawn up, with his usual attention to detail – many thanks go out to him! – counts more than 500 presentations spread over 180 sessions, and most of the 78 thematic sessions will have two or three work sessions. In addition to these 78 thematic sessions, our 30th Conference will include 4 working groups, 5 sessions for New Researchers and 7 sessions of "authors meet critics".

For the first time, colleagues from some African countries (Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe…) and Asian countries (Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, Vietnam…) will participate in a conference of the ISSR, which is increasingly establishing itself as a worldwide organisation. Of course, colleagues from the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America will be well represented; after all, we will be in Santiago de Compostela.

Among the many thematic sessions, let me first mention the one on walking pilgrimages, and the one on religious pilgrimage destinations and the tourism involved (an obvious choice!). Next, several sessions are directly connected with the theme of the conference, The Challenges of Religious Diversity, using various cultural spheres as their frames of reference. Finally, there will be sessions covering new fields of study, or those worthy of greater recognition, as the sociological research which is devoted to them is in my view not yet sufficiently developed: religions and the Internet, the world of Orthodox Christianity, religions and laïcité in Vietnam... The programme at Santiago de Compostela will also include joint sessions between the ISSR and other scientific organisations (ISA, AISLF, RRA, ACSRM, ISORECEA, …)1.

In conclusion, I would like to ask everyone to respect the deadlines for paying the fees for your subscription and for the conference. This will simplify the work of our Treasurer, Jean-Pierre Hiernaux, who is, as always, devoted to his job, which is not always an easy one.

In July 2009, our Treasurer and our General Secretary will come to the end of their terms of office. Karel Dobbelaere, who for many years has served the ISSR with intelligence, efficiency and devotion, wishes to step down. Make him happy by respecting his guidelines in every detail: this is the last ISSR conference that he will be organising as General Secretary! Let him say that the 30th was the best, and everyone cooperated both with the big things and the little ones! When the time comes, I will tell him for all of us how deeply grateful we are for everything he has done for the ISSR. But for now, your president is busy finding his successor, who will be elected in Santiago de Compostela. As I am writing this, all I can tell you is that a solution is in sight.

Please check carefully your session and inform me of possible mistakes before January 15th 2009 by e-mail:

Check also if all titles of the papers in your session are in the two languages of

the Society and also if you were able to send me the abstracts in both languages

(French and English). If some proposals do not have the title and the abstract

in these two languages: write to the concerned and ask her/him to comply

before January 10th 2009.

The PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME of the 30th Conference is sent:

to inform you about the programme and

to allow you TO CHECK whether:

- your proposal is integrated in the programme (it may be missing because of a problem with e-mail or an accidental deletion) and in the correct session(s)

- your proposal is correctly presented typing errors etc. may have occurred: especially important is the check of the email addresses

- all required information is presented (you may have forgotten to provide a translation of the title of your paper in French; your institutional affiliation and/or your e-mail address may be lacking)

- in the timetable (p. ) there is no overlap, in a given time segment, between sessions you have to participate in as speaker, discussant or president (With the help of Mrs H. Van Meerbeeck, I have checked carefully your performances in different sessions, however, we may have overlooked something). Although it was clearly specified in the precedent Network that “each participant may only present one paper at the conference” and that the president of a session should be selected amongst the participants of this session, more than 20 % did not follow these rules, which, in spite of all efforts (we worked on it during two days), has rendered very difficult and sometimes impossible to avoid certain overlaps. If you locate an overlap that concerns you, please try to solve it with the conveners of the concerned sessions (change the sequence of your presentation, give up a paper…).

Please inform me of any change or correction that is needed before January 15th 2009 by sending an e-mail to: [email protected]

specifying the number of the Thematic Session (T), the Working Group (WGT) or the New Researchers Forum (NRF) ), where your paper fits, and specifying the

miscellaneous paper (MPL). This will allow me to organise the definite programme and to put it on our Web Site.

Characterized by a distinct interdisciplinary tenor, the study of religion initially emerged as a critique of the failures and limitations of the theological sciences to explain and understand human behavior. Yet, in spite of this success, we find that the methods and theories within these disciplines have often been developed and incorporated into the study of religion in an unreflective way, preserving ideological prejudices that hinder our understanding of human behavior and its potentials. As a response, our book series aims to develop a sustained interdisciplinary project with the express purpose of articulating a body of critical research on religion. The purpose of this book series is to provide a venue for scholars engaged in critical research on religion. Our aims include studies contributing to our understanding of how religious institutions and religious thinking may simultaneously serve as a source of domination and progressive social change. We seek to analyze the historical and economic conditions giving rise to religious systems while recognizing that religious ideas can be motivational and therefore dialectically related to material conditions. We aim to understand more precisely the role of religion within social and political conflicts. These conflicts are often based on ethnic, racial, and regional differences, which have political and economic inequity as crucial factors. As with most disciplines, a critical perspective recognizes that its own historical continuities lie within the confluence of numerous religious, political, and philosophical traditions. Critical reflection does not reject this intellectual heritage but critically self-reflects on its relationship to it. This book series invites proposals and submissions of monographs and edited volumes from scholars across all academic disciplines. These include but are not limited to theology, religious studies, sociology of religion, anthropology of religion, psychology of religion, history, political science, and philosophy. Works can use a wide range of methodologies, including quantitative, qualitative, and historical. While encouraging works to be theoretical driven by a critical perspective, it is particularly interested in empirical research which is theoretically guided by interdisciplinary concerns. The programme probes the current condition of religion in Europe against the background of European secularism and the re-kindling of religious activity brought about by the political and social changes in Europe of the past thirty years.

The ten innovative and methodologically varied projects take a look at the significance of religion in contemporary social life, as well as exploring the social and cultural impacts of recent religious growth points, such as Pentecostalism and Islam.

Quantitative studies analyse data from the major social surveys conducted over the past ten years to examine whether religion has re-emerged as a social force, how much has changed, how much is religion still in decline, how far have new migrant groups transformed or merely refreshed the picture.

Qualitative projects involving ethnographic, visual and othe methodologies, look at the detail of religious activity through empirical and theoretical research, exploring issues concerning gender, transnational processes, the politics of religious cultures, new forms of religious expression and many other dimensions of contemporary relevance.

The Programme was launched in March 2007 and will continue through 2010.

ANNOUNCING THE 2009 TAYLOR & FRANCIS SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION POSTGRADUATE ESSAY COMPETITION

The British Sociological Association Sociology of Religion Study Group is now inviting entries for the 2009 Taylor & Francis Sociology of Religion Postgraduate Essay competition.

We welcome essays from postgraduates at all stages of their studies on any aspect of contemporary religion grounded in a sociological perspective. The prize for the winning essay is £100 and, subject to undergoing the usual refereeing process, it is hoped that the winning essay will be published in the Journal of Contemporary Religion.

Essays should be between 5000 and 7000 words, and should be submitted electronically as a single MS Word document to Kristin Aune ([email protected]), including bibliography and cover sheet (which can be downloaded from the Study Group website). The deadline for submission is the 27th February 2009, and entries can be submitted at any time between now and then.

The winner of the competition will be announced at the Study Group's Annual Conference Dinner in Durham (30th March to 1st April 2009). If you are not already a member of the Study Group, you will need to join prior to submitting an essay.

If you are a member of staff, please download a poster to display on your departmental notice board and encourage your postgraduate students to submit essays. If you are a postgraduate this is great opportunity to work towards an early publication on your thesis topic, or a chance to explore another area of interest.
