Programme for

2018CLUB HISTORY

The Club began playing at a 12-hole golf course on privately owned land in Mentone (near the old race course) called “Braeside”. The Club was originally named “Springfield”. The private property was sold in 1953, and as a consequence the club was disbanded. In 1954 the new owners made the golf course available again to the club; it was reformed and renamed “Mentone Golf Club”. At this time there were approximately 50 lady members. The first President of Mentone Golf Club was Mrs Hope Lemmon, who later became a Life Member of the Victorian Women’s Golf League. To help establish the Club, a loan of £25 was accepted from the men’s committee. At this time there was a strong association with the men’s committee, with monthly social dances organised as well as mixed foursomes competitions. In 1960 ‘Braeside’ was sold and the golf course was closed. As a consequence the club decided to move to its current location, Sandringham Golf Course. The President at this time was Mrs Hazel Edmonds, who along with the Committee, steered the club through challenging times and laid strong foundations for growth and financial stability. The club has grown considerably since then and now has more than 110 members.Mentone Golf Club has produced five VWGL Champion of Champions; won the VWGL “A” Grade Pennant flag in 1984 and the “D” Grade Pennant flag in 2001.The Club has a strong ethos of charity and has for more than 50 years donated the proceeds of its charity day to Inclusion Melbourne (formerly Gawith Villa).

To date more than $140,000 has been donated to Inclusion to assist with its programs of supporting individuals with an intellectual disability.
