Lee School was originally built in 1904 as a two-story, four-room building. It opened in September 1904 with 160 students and 4 teachers. Some students traveled to school in horse-drawn hacks for a cost of $2.50 a month. When voters did not approve funds for new construction Lee was reduced to half-day sessions in 1908-09. In 1911, teachers were making about $65.00 a month. Curriculum continued to develop, and the importance of children getting fresh air and more exercise led to playgrounds being added to the school settings. A University of Missouri student helped the boys at Lee build their own playground equipment and some birdhouses. Because of the close proximity to the University, Lee served as a site for student teaching for the College of Education. In 1914 a 10-cent property tax increase allowed for Lee to expand. During the Depression the district received low-interest federal loans and built a new Lee building. During World War II food rationing led to the Victory Gardens which encouraged school districts to grow their own food to support the war effort; hence, they produced most of the food served for the hot lunch programs. In 1989 Lee became the Expressive Arts School and includes neighborhood students and students who transfer in to experience the extended arts and music integration into the curriculum.

VOLUNTEER HELP Lee will need volunteers to help in the library, computer lab, and many other PTA

functions. The volunteer hours are a very important part of our school records. Every year at the end of the year, we are asked to report the number of volunteer hours to the Superintendent of Columbia Public Schools. This report is then sent to the State Department of Education. Please keep this report in mind as you volunteer at Lee during the year. If you sign in at the office on the volunteer cards, it may be easier to report the hours next April when we are asked. Volunteers must complete a background check and be fingerprinted. The Board Office has more information.
