TEMPLE ADATH B’NAI ISRAEL THE TABI TIMES

Much of what we do at TABI falls under the category of Tikkun Olam – repairing the world. Tzedakah is certainly something that falls into this grouping. Tzedakah comes from the Hebrew word “Tzadik” which means righteous. We often think of Tzedakah as meaning “Charity,” but it really means much more. Charity is an important component of Tzedakah, however, and it should not be minimized. What many in our TABI community may not be aware of is that “Charity” is something not only needed by social service agencies in our town and national organizations who help those in need. Charity is needed within our own TABI families. It is often uncomfortable for individuals to ask or receive help from those they know – so I turn to the Jewish concept of Charity/Tzedakah that was developed by Moses Maimonides. Moses Maimonides (1135-1204), was a great Jewish scholar and teacher, prepared what has come to be known as the “Ladder of Tzedakah.” Two main concepts help to determine which levels of Tzedakah are the highest:

1. Maimonides ladder includes seven levels of giving and one level of doing Tzedakah. Doing Tzedakah is the highest form.

2. The ladder places kinds of Tzedakah that are given with Kavod (honor and dignity) as higher than those that do not, or those that lead to Bushah (shame and embarrassment.)

The highest levels of “giving” on Maimonides’ ladder are:

1. When the giver does not know the receiver and the receiver does not know the giver2. Helping a needy person become self-sufficient by giving them a job or teaching them a skill.

I am starting a new giving initiative at TABI for our TABI members who may be in need or find themselves in a difficult financial place at the moment – an initiative that tries to operate according to Maimonides ladder of giving. The program is simply called “Give One Take One.” Outside of my office there will be two envelopes; one says “Gas Cards” and the other says “Grocery Cards.” Inside the “Gas Cards” envelope are Marathon Gas Cards in $10.00 denominations. Inside the “Grocery Cards” envelope are Schnucks Cards in $20.00 denominations. I have started this program with funds from my Discretionary Fund. Rather than writing checks to individuals for food and gas – which is “lower level” giving on Maimonides ladder (since people need to come and specifically ask for these funds) my hope is to operate this aspect of giving on a higher level and encourage more anonymity. If any TABI member finds themselves in need, my hope is that they can simply walk down the hall, find the envelopes and simply take what they need – no questions, no need to “ask for help” and hopefully no shame or embarrassment. At the same time, any TABI member wishing to participate in the program is free to “add to the envelopes” and donate both gas and food gift cards. Again, these are “anonymous” donations and “anonymous” gifts for those in need. I have long found that many who are in need at some point in their life and receive Tzedakah are often the first to contribute at other points in life when they have all they need. If you would like to “Give” in a different way – you now have one more opportunity for giving at your disposal. If you are in need, you now have another opportunity to receive that hopefully won’t cause any embarrassment or shame.

New Year, new beginnings and…resolutions. Of course I have my long-standing ‘lose weight’, ‘exercise more’ near the top of the list, which means I didn’t quite hit the mark the year before! As I get older, and dare I say wiser, my top resolutions are to spend more time with family and my grown and mostly flown children and to also gain greater insight into my faith.

I am fortunate that my mother-in-law loves to send me newspapers, articles and more from her very large synagogue in Michigan and she highlights what she loved. There was recently an author, Abigail Pogrebin, discussing her book “My Jewish Year, 18 Holidays, One Wondering Jew” which caught my attention. I watched an YouTube of one of her presentations and she said many things that struck a chord. In our effort to keep Judaism alive for generations to come, she reminds us that we are all stewards of something precious and to not overthrow the customs that made it all the way to us. She researched and attended almost EVERY Jewish holiday for a year and she compiled the information in a very easy to read and understand book that she hopes to be a bridge for Jews and non-Jews alike. She has some great ideas I think might appeal to our synagogue.

This is a link of one of her talks “My Amazing, Demanding, Indelible Jewish Year” https://binged.it/2F8xtFy

Another book I recently read, recommended by Davena Day, was the “Tattooist of Auschwitz”, which is a love story set during the horrors of the Holocaust. It was a timely recommendation as TABI will be hosting a Cypress Special Event – Holocaust Murals Exhibit February 2-17th. Please see the flyer in this bulletin for more information and we need volunteers and would love to hear from you if you can spare a few hours during one of the days or help with the oneg following the Afternoon of Remembrance with guest speaker Fred Gross, a Holocaust survivor living in Louisville. This will be a wonderful event, plan to attend, tell your friends and please lend a hand.

We also have another One God One Community event on 2/10 at the Islamic Center, which is always a treat!

I wish all of you a joyous and healthy 2019!

Warmest Regards,

Michele Malitz, President

A New Generation Remembers: A Unique Holocaust ExhibitComing to TABI

This February, the Committee to Promote Respect in Schools (CYPRESS) invites you to join in a powerful, creative learning experience around the Holocaust.

CYPRESS, in partnership with Temple Adath B’nai Israel (TABI), is hosting an exhibit of Holocaust Murals created by students designed to ensure memories of the Holocaust are preserved in art.

The exhibit is called “A New Generation Remembers: A Unique Holocaust Exhibit.” The mural collection is part of a program for gifted middle and high school students from Kentucky. Every summer, a group of students immerse themselves in the study of the Holocaust, watching historical films, taking field trips and hearing from survivors. During the course, students work together to capture what they've learned in a mural.

This is the 25th year of the Holocaust education program. Through the years, students have created 21 murals in all. They are each 6 foot by 9 foot long. Every mural is unique, but displayed together, they tell a powerful story, and ensure that the lessons of the Holocaust are not forgotten.

The mural collection will be on display in the social hall of TABI the first two weeks of February. The exhibit will be open during the week for middle and high school field trips, and open on the weekends for public viewing and special events.

For a list of the public viewing hours, for more information on the special events, or to schedule a field trip, please visit the CYPRESS website, www.cypressevansville.org .

CYPRESS is also looking for TABI volunteers to serve as docents for the exhibit and to help out with events. To volunteer, please visit the CYPRESS website.

Dear Friends,

You all never cease to amaze me! This year, because of all your generosity, our Thanksgiving Basket Food Drive was a great success! We were able to put together more 90 food baskets for families spending the Thanksgiving holiday in shelters. That adds up to more than 700 meals…and it means hundreds felt the warmth of our community as they celebrated Thanksgiving! This year, we provided baskets for the YWCA Transitional Housing and Domestic Violence Shelters, the House of Bread and Peace, Ruth's House, and the Albion Fellows Bacon Center. We also worked with TABI's own Dave Parker at Aurora to deliver meals to people living throughout our community. And finally, 40 baskets went to the Tri-State Food Bank for distribution to food pantries throughout the area…ensuring your gifts touched those who live in our greater Tri-State community. Special Thanks goes out to Scott Berry, and the rest of the staff at the Eastside Schnucks who helped coordinate and load up the baskets and to Barbie Williams for collecting and keeping track of the donations. This fundraiser has become just “what we do” here at TABI but it’s also become something our partners have come to count on. It’s wonderful that year after year, our amazing congregation comes through! It’s an honor to be part of such an incredible, giving group of people!

Sincerely, Patricia Weinzapfel
