Sunday of the Holy Fathers

The 7th Sunday after the Feast of Holy Pascha

For these pious wise ones put down the godless

teachings of the terrible Arius, and expelled him

from the unity of the Catholic Church, and clearly

taught everyone to profess their faith in the

consubstantial and coeternal Son of God, existing

before the ages, expressing this clearly in the symbol of faith".

First Antiphon

Clap your hands, all you nations;* shout to God with the voice of joy.

Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Saviour, save, us.

For the Lord most high is awesome,* a great king of all the earth.

Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Saviour, save, us.

He has subdued peoples to us,* and nations under our feet.

Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Saviour, save, us.

God ascended amid shouts of joy;* the Lord at the sound of the trumpet.

Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Saviour, save, us.

Glory… Now… Only-Begotten Son…

Third Antiphon

We sing usual verses with the following refrain: Son of God, who ascended in glory,* save us

who sing to You: Alleluia.

Troparion, Tone 6: Angelic powers were upon Your tomb* and the guards became like

dead men;* Mary stood before Your tomb* seeking Your most pure body.* You captured Hades

without being overcome by it.* You met the Virgin and granted life.* O Lord, risen from the

dead,* glory be to You!

Troparion, Tone 4: You ascended in glory, O Christ our God,* giving joy to Your

disciples by the promise of the Holy Spirit,* and assuring them through your blessing* that You

are the Son of God,* the Redeemer of the world.

Troparion, Tone 8: Christ our God, You are glorified above all,* You established our

fathers as beacons on earth* and through them guided all of us to the true faith.* Glory to You,

most compassionate Lord.

+Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Kontakion, Tone 8: The apostles’ preaching and the Fathers’ doctrine* confirmed the Church’s

one faith,* and wearing the garment of truth* woven from theology that descends from on

high,* she rightly imparts* the mystery of godliness* and sings its glory.

Now and for ever and ever. Amen.

Kontakion, Tone 6: When you had fulfilled Your plan for us* and united things on earth with

those in heaven,* You ascended in glory, O Christ our God,* in no way distant, but remaining in

separable,* You cried to those who love You:* I am with You and there is none against you.

Prokeimenon, Tone 4 Blessed are You, Lord God of our fathers, and praised and

glorified is Your Name forever.

verse: For You are righteous in everything that You have done to us. (Daniel 3:26,27)

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles: In those days, Paul had decided to sail past

Ephesus, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; he was eager to be in Jerusalem, if

possible, on the day of Pentecost. From Miletus he sent a message to Ephesus, asking the elders

of the church to meet him. When they came to him, he said to them: “Keep watch over

yourselves and over all the flock, of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd

the church of God that he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after I have gone,

savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Some even from your own group

will come distorting the truth in order to entice the disciples to follow them. Therefore be alert,

remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to warn everyone with tears. And

now I commend you to God and to the message of his grace, a message that is able to build you

up and to give you the inheritance among all who are sanctified. I coveted no one’s silver or

gold or clothing. You know for yourselves that I worked with my own hands to support myself

and my companions. In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support

the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to

give than to receive.’” When he had finished speaking, he knelt down with them all and prayed.

(Acts 20:16-18, 28-36).

Alleluia: The God of gods, the Lord, spoke and summoned the earth from the rising of sun to its

setting. verse: Gather to Him His devout ones, who with sacrifice make covenant with Him.

Instead of “It is truly…”: O my soul, magnify the Lord who in glory ascended bodily into the

heavens. O Mother of God,* you transcended both mind and word,* and in time, ineffably bore

the Timeless One:* it is you who, with one accord,* we, the faithful, magnify.

Communion Hymn Praise the Lord from the heavens;* praise Him in the highest. (Psalm

148:1)* Rejoice in the Lord, O you just;* praise befits the righteous. (Psalm 32:1) Alleluia,

alleluia,* alleluia.

Instead of We have seen the true light and Let our mouths be filled we sing: Be exalted, O God,

above the heavens, above all the earth be Your glory.

Mission Days - A Ten Day Journey "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the holy Spirit," Mt. 28.19

About Mission Days:

Through our active participation in the spiritual

efforts of these ten Mission Days, once again we are called

upon to discover and understand anew that our parish

communities and families (domestic churches) are

missionary in nature. Such understanding flows from the

gift of our Baptism, by virtue of which, and through the

power of its mystery, we have committed ourselves to

believe, live, serve, and share the experience of our faith in

Christ; and not simply with our family members, but with

everyone we meet in life. Thus, the mission of our parish community is to allow Christ to

enter deeper into our lives, to carry the Good News beyond our own community and to support

those who expand the boundaries of the Kingdom of God with their missionary activity and

chaplaincy ministry.

From the feast of the Ascension to Pentecost, together with our entire parish

community, let us pray that the Lord might renew our life in God by the grace and intercession

of the Holy Spirit.

If circumstances do not allow your parish to conduct Mission Days during the week or if you

personally cannot participate in them, you are invited to observe Mission Days in your own

home, setting aside at least 5 minutes of family time in order to read the Guidebook together

(Word of God, Meditation, Quotation-witness, Prayer), and then to discuss among yourselves

the Missionary Tasks provided for each day. Another possibility is to observe Mission Days

in a prayerful gathering together with other families, with your neighbors, for example.

Prayer: Lord our God, spread the light of Your Holy Gospel, that it may shine through us

who are baptized, as children of the Light. Grant that the Christian faith may spread in our

society, that we may bear witness to Your living presence in our lives and in our parish

community; O Lord, hear us and have mercy. O Holy Spirit, bestowing all: You send

prophets, perfect priests, teach the uneducated wisdom, transform fishermen into

theologians, and unite the entire church community. Consubstantial and co-reigning with

the Father and the Son, O Comforter, glory be to You!

OUR TRADITION: FEAST OF ASCENSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST

On Thursday of the sixth week of Pascha, we celebrate the feast of the Ascension of our

Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ.

After His Resurrection, Jesus remained on earth for forty days, appearing to His Disciples in

various places. He ate, drank and conversed with them, verifying and assuring His Resurrection. On

the fortieth day after Pascha, Jesus appeared to His Disciples in Jerusalem. He gave them His last

commandment, to go forth and preach in His Name to all the nations. At the same time, He told them

not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait until they were clothed with the power from on high by the

descent of the Holy Spirit upon them. Having said this, Jesus led His Disciples to the Mount of Olives.

Then He lifted up His hands and blessed them. And as He was speaking to them with words of fatherly

blessing, Jesus departed from them and ascended into Heaven, being received by a shining cloud,

indicating His divine majesty. He gradually disappeared from the sight of the Disciples as they gazed

at Him. And as they stood thus, two angels in brilliant white robes appeared to them in the form of

men and said to them: Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into Heaven? This same Jesus, Who

is taken from you into Heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into Heaven. In

these words is fulfilled and defined the doctrine concerning the Son of God and His Word, in the

Confession of Faith. After our Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled all His great dispensation for us, He ascended

in glory into Heaven, and sat on the right hand of God the Father.

The Ascension was the final Resurrection appearance to the Disciples and Mary, the Mother

of God, and it marked a new beginning in all their lives. The Disciples went back to Jerusalem “with

great joy” and “devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary, the Mother of

Jesus.” The Disciples elected Matthias to bring their number up to twelve again. They were waiting,

as Jesus had told them to; they were waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Jesus had told the

Disciples that the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, would not come until He ascended to His Father.

Jesus left us with many promises, three of which are associated with the Feast of the Ascension:

Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit.

Jesus promises to remain with us even to the end of time.

Jesus promises to return in glory at the second coming.

For Jesus is our forerunner into heaven, He takes our human nature into the Godhead, in His steadfast

love.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) is pleased to announce the launch of its

project, Celebrating the Strength of Canada’s Diversity: Youth Engaging Youth. The project is

undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada’s Department of Heritage

Canada 150 Fund. With the Celebrating the Strength of Canada’s Diversity: Youth Engaging

Youth Project, the UCC will work with its member organizations across the country to organize

youth-led and driven Canada 150 celebratory events in British Columbia, Alberta,

Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. The end goal is to focus on youth working together in the

spirit of diversity and inclusion to share experiences and create actively engaging celebratory

events for Canadians for Canada’s 150th anniversary. The project will result in 50 events,

engaging 1250 – 2500 youth in actively designing and administering the events, and attracting

up to 50,000 Canadians. Galyna Paliychuk (our Canada 150 Community animator in BC) will

work with Ukrainian Canadian youth on organizing youth-led and driven Canada 150

celebratory events in British Columbia. The BC youth will organize ten events in our province

(ranging from sport to celebratory to cultural activities) working in partnership with youth from

other ethno-cultural, linguistic, and Indigenous communities.

At this stage of the YEY project Galyna Paliychuk is reaching out different communities

and groups to indicate young leaders within those communities/groups and help them to develop

their ideas of events within the scope of YEY (non-commercial mulicultural events, June-

August 2017).

If your organization has young and enthusiastic leaders who might be interested in

organizing or developing current multicultural youth event in BC under the UCC Youth

Engaging Youth project umbrella with the financial support of the Government of Canada’s

Department of Heritage Canada 150 Fund, please contact:
