Opening Acclamation Prayer Book Page 351
Presider: Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins.
People: His mercy endures for ever. Amen.
Presider: Let us pray together for our worship during the time of the pandemic.
People: Almighty God of the Cross and loving God of Community, who has
called us forth as a body in your suffering world; we are different as the Church
today, but we know you are with us. Buildings crumble, the church year passes,
but your church endures from generation to generation. Give us strength and
courage to be the light of your Christ, whose body we are, and to keep loving the
world that you have called good. Make this day a feast day of your protection,
your plenty, your purpose, your plan, and your peace. All this we ask as we pray
with all the saints and with one another. Amen.
Presider: Jesus said, “The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our
God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor
as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31
The Confession and Absolution Prayer Book Page 352
Presider: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
A moment of silence is kept.
All: Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
3
Presider: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our
Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit
keep you in eternal life. Amen.
Presider: Please join in singing the Kyrie together.
Kyrie WLP 839
Title: Lord, have mercy [Kyrie]; Music: Arlen R. Clarke (b. 1954)
Presider: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
4
Presider: Let us pray.
The Prayer for the Day Prayer Book Page 218
Prayers are a way of talking to God in a serious way, of saying to God, “I want to be closer to you, I want to say ‘yes’ to you, God. We conclude our prayers with “Amen” which means, “yes, so be it.”
Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep
us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended
from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which
may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
The First Reading
Reader: A reading from Exodus 20:1-17
Then God spoke all these words:
I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
You must have no other gods before me.
Do not make an idol for yourself—no form whatsoever—of anything in the sky above
or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. Do not bow down to them or
worship them, because I, the Lord your God, am a passionate God. I punish children
for their parents’ sins even to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me.
But I am loyal and gracious to the thousandth generation of those who love me and
keep my commandments.
Do not use the Lord your God’s name as if it were of no significance; the Lord won’t
forgive anyone who uses his name that way.
Remember the Sabbath day and treat it as holy. Six days you may work and do all your
tasks, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. Do not do any work on
it—not you, your sons or daughters, your male or female servants, your animals, or the
immigrant who is living with you. Because the Lord made the heavens and the earth,
the sea, and everything that is in them in six days, but rested on the seventh day. That is
why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
Honor your father and your mother so that your life will be long on the fertile land that
the Lord your God is giving you.
5
Do not kill.
Do not commit adultery.
Do not steal.
Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.
Do not desire and try to take your neighbor’s house. Do not desire and try to take your
neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox, donkey, or anything else that belongs to
your neighbor.
Reader: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Presider: Please join in reading today’s psalm together
Psalm 19
Heaven is declaring God’s glory; the sky is proclaiming his handiwork. One day gushes the news to the next, and one night informs another what needs to be known. Of course, there’s no speech, no words— their voices can’t be heard— but their sound extends throughout the world; their words reach the ends of the earth.
God has made a tent in heaven for the sun. The sun is like a groom coming out of his honeymoon suite; like a warrior, it thrills at running its course. It rises in one end of the sky; its circuit is complete at the other. Nothing escapes its heat.
The LORD’s Instruction is perfect, reviving one’s very being. The LORD’s laws are faithful, making naive people wise. The LORD’s regulations are right, gladdening the heart.
6
The LORD’s commands are pure, giving light to the eyes. Honoring the LORD is correct, lasting forever. The LORD’s judgments are true. All of these are righteous! They are more desirable than gold— than tons of pure gold! They are sweeter than honey— even dripping off the honeycomb! No doubt about it: your servant is enlightened by them; there is great reward in keeping them. But can anyone know what they’ve accidentally done wrong? Clear me of any unknown sin and save your servant from willful sins. Don’t let them rule me. Then I’ll be completely blameless; I’ll be innocent of great wrongdoing.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to you, LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
The Second Reading
Reader: A reading from 1 Corinthians 1:18-25
The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are being destroyed. But it is the
power of God for those of us who are being saved. It is written in scripture: I will
destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will reject the intelligence of the intelligent.
Where are the wise? Where are the legal experts? Where are today’s debaters? Hasn’t
God made the wisdom of the world foolish? In God’s wisdom, he determined that the
world wouldn’t come to know him through its wisdom. Instead, God was pleased to
save those who believe through the foolishness of preaching. Jews ask for signs, and
Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, which is a scandal to Jews and
foolishness to Gentiles. But to those who are called—both Jews and Greeks—Christ is
7
God’s power and God’s wisdom. This is because the foolishness of God is wiser than
human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
Reader: The Word of the Lord
People: Thanks be to God.

The Gospel of the day is Good News from Jesus as he teaches us and tells us how much God loves us, and how God
truly believes in us as children of God. Following the readings, we praise God for giving us the story of saving love
and grace.
Presider: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
The Gospel John 2:13-22
It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found
in the temple those who were selling cattle, sheep, and doves, as well as those involved
in exchanging currency sitting there. He made a whip from ropes and chased them all
out of the temple, including the cattle and the sheep. He scattered the coins and
overturned the tables of those who exchanged currency. He said to the dove sellers,
“Get these things out of here! Don’t make my Father’s house a place of business.” His
disciples remembered that it is written, Passion for your house consumes me.
Then the Jewish leaders asked him, “By what authority are you doing these things?
What miraculous sign will you show us?”
Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple and in three days I’ll raise it up.”
The Jewish leaders replied, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and you will
raise it up in three days?” But the temple Jesus was talking about was his body. After
he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered what he had said, and they
believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
Presider: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.
We listen to a message from the preacher to understand what Jesus is telling us in the Gospel reading and to learn how to practice the Good News in our everyday lives.

standing
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of
all that is, seen and unseen.
9
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of
the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten,
not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the
Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was
buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he
ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will
come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have
no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the
Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and
apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We
look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

labor to you. Amen.

The Holy Communion
This is the time we remember that Jesus died on the cross for us and then was made alive again by God so we would always know how much God loves us. We ask for God to fill us with his spirit so we will be made strong and inspired to do God’s work in the world.
**Currently, as a faithful community in solidarity with one another as the body
of Christ, we will fast from the taking of Holy Communion and engage in
Spiritual Communion in response to maintaining safe distance, and in honoring
the integrity of the sacrament. **

Proper Preface for the season of Lent
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who was in every way tempted as we are, yet did not
sin; by whose grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer unto
ourselves, but unto him who died for us and rose again.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all
the company of heaven, who for ever proclaim the glory of your Name:
Sanctus
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
All are welcome to stand or kneel as they are able.
The Celebrant continues
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we
had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus
Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of
us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your
will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it or lay a hand upon it; and at the words
concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took
bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the
remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to
them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is
shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this
for the remembrance of me.”
14
Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith:
All: Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
The Celebrant continues
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your
Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we
may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and
peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal
kingdom.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the
unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for
ever. Amen.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray…
People and Celebrant
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.
Amen.
Breaking of the Bread
The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A moment of silence is kept.
Presider: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
All: Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Diocese of Virginia:
All: Faithful God, in the wonder of your wisdom and love, you fed your people
in the wilderness with the bread of angels and you sent Jesus to be the bread of
life. Though we cannot consume these gifts of bread and wine together, we
thank you that we have received Christ’s presence, the forgiveness of sins, and
all other benefits of Christ’s passion and resurrection. By the power of the Holy
Spirit, may we embody your love, be renewed for your service, and be
reflections of the awakened and risen Lord. Amen.

Song of Sending Stand By Me The Band on the Corner
When the night has come And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see No, I won't be afraid Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, Stand by me
So Jesus, Jesus, Stand by me, oh, stand by me
Oh, stand, stand by me Stand by me
If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, Stand by me
And Jesus, Jesus,
Stand by me, oh, stand by me Oh, stand now, stand by me
Stand by me
Jesus, Jesus Stand by me, oh, stand by me Oh, stand now, stand by me
Stand by me Whenever you're in trouble, won't you
stand by me? Oh, stand by me
Won't you stand now? Oh, stand, stand by me
