Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. When some people develop chickenpox the virus may lie dormant in

part of the spine for many years causing no symptoms. This virus travels down the sensory nerve and appears on the surface

of the skin. This is why it always appears in a very specific pattern and why it is

very rare for two sides of the body to be affected at once. The long term damage caused to the nerve is what is responsible for

the pain before and more importantly after the appearance of the rash .

WHAT IS IT?

Pain - the pain in the affected area tends to be continuous. Some describe it as a dull pain, while others experience a burning sensation. There may also be occasional stabbing pains.

Rash - about two to three days after the onset of pain the rash will appear. It usually emerges on just one side of the body, and develops at the area of the affected nerve. It starts off as red blotches on the skin, and rapidly develops into itchy blisters; similar to those of chicken pox. They become yellowish and dry out.

Post herpetic neuralgia - some patients experience severe nerve pain. If the nerves are damaged the pain can last for a very long time, even months or years after symptoms have disappeared.
