A sk questions to identify your topic and information need

•What is your topic?

•Is your topic a “workable topic”?  Is your topic too

broad ?  Enough material on it?

•Is this topic interesting to you? Can you make it

interesting to others?

•Is there a particular question or aspect of your

topic that you want to focus on?

•What keywords will you use to search for

information on your topic?

L ook at quality resources for information/answers

• Gather information:

–  What kind of resources –  reference works, books, periodical articles, websites?

– How are you going to find them – library catalogs, research databases, suggested

websites, via search engines?

• Evaluate the source:

– Who is the author - are they an expert?

– When was the information published - is this Important?

– Where does the information in the source come from - is it biased, fact or opinion?

– What is it about and Why was it written  - what point is the author trying to make,

who is  the intended audience, are they trying to sell, inform, or entertain?

– Should I use this source?

T ake notes as you read about your topic

•How are you going to record and organize the information that you find? (i.e. index cards, electronic worksheets, PowerPoint slide, etc.)

•Focus when reading:– What is different from other sources?– What reinforces what you’ve already read?

•Consider the purpose of your note-taking:–  Quick facts?– Direct quotations?– Extended paraphrasing?

• Be sure to match notes with source info for citing

I dentify and record information about your sources

•Properly citing sources prevents plagiarism, lends credibility to your work, and helps others find additional sources on your topic

•Create a bibliography as you are using sources or at a minimum write down essential citation info for later use (i.e. author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, page numbers used; website url, title, date of use/download; etc.)

Page 7: “ Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.”

ALTIORA – “Strive for the Higher Things”

O rganize your information to create an outline for your project

•Organize the info that you found –  Use an outline (one recommended by your teacher or create your own)  to structure your project and to show how the research supports your main points

•Reflect on what you have learned from your research and consider your thesis – should you change it?

Page 8: “ Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.”

ALTIORA – “Strive for the Higher Things”

R eview, research to fill information gaps, and create a draft

•Review your outline :– Do your points support your main ideas?– Do you have sufficient information for all of your

main points?– Does your outline make sense, is it logical?

•Perform additional research to fill any gaps

•Create a draft of your final project

A cknowledge all sources and complete all parts of the assignment

•Review your draft, edit, revise, and insert any visuals if your project requires them (make sure you have permission to use the images!)

•Acknowledge/cite all sources (Internal and Works Cited)

•Review requirements and complete all parts of the assignment before the due date
