Meet the Interns
The New Spring 2010 UCARE Interns
The UCARE interns of Spring 2010 come from a variety of backgrounds, majors, concentrations and interests. The current interns represent students from the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Architecture. The Spring 2010 UCARE Interns have been working on a wide variety of projects and initiatives that are forming and
facilitating the growth of the organization. Some projects include spreading awareness of UCARE, working on the Slave Memorial Initiative, doing research on racial issues in the Charlottesville area, and developing programs to include local high school students and their dialogues of race.
This Spring UCARE is proud to announce six interns: Robin Proebsting, Colleen Wolfe, Ishraga Eltahir, Arley Arrington, Yonji Kim, and Florette King.

Robin Proebsting is a 2nd year graduate student majoring in Planning (MUEP). She is working on researching current and historic policies at the UVa Medical Center, including the legacy of disparity and promotion at the hospital, and access and privacy issues. Her goal is to produce and issue outlines of her findings.
Colleen Wolfe is a 1st year graduate student working on her Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning. She is currently working on compiling research about the racial landscape of UVa and the surrounding community. Her goal is to bring all this research together in one place and to make it easily and publicly accessible. She hopes to be able to develop some creative distribution materials that will direct people in the community to this resource
Ishraga Eltahir is a 3rd year majoring in Political and Social Thought & African and African American Studies. She is working on a project in conjunction with Student Council, to raise awareness about the
history of UVA as it relates to slavery. In addition, she is working toward having a memorial to commemorate the enslaved laborers who helped with the construction of the university. Beyond that Ishraga is working with other students and Madison House to better help prepare student volunteers who go into Charlottesville. She wants to research student housing at UVA and its effect on the Charlottesville community. Her goal would be to see a more prominent memorial on grounds for the enslaved laborers, and a better understanding for students of the disparities that exist and are created by their presence in Charlottesville.
Arley Arrington is a 3rd Year majoring in Urban & Environmental Planning. She is currently helping Frank Dukes with the Race & Repair Class, doing basic administrative tasks, and as the groups begin to solidify their projects, and plug them into the existing UCARE projects. She is working on planning a
Dialogue on Race at the local high school, and possibly middle school. Her goal is to work with teachers and faculty who have already begun efforts to create a dialogue for Charlottesville students.
Yonji Kim is a 2nd year in global Development Studies. She is interested in social justice issues and loves contributing to her community. She is currently a Marketing/Communications Project Intern with Florette King. Together, they work on increasing awareness among the UVA student body of UCARE and its goals through networking and technology.
Florette King is currently a 3rd year major in Sociology and Global Development. She is currently working with Yonji Kim on spreading the vision, message and goals of UCARE. She is working on a resource database and website development. Her goal is to get the University Community to learn about the many racial disparities in Charlottesville and actively combat them.

Slave Memorial Initiative and Focus Groups
As a part of the initiative to include a slave memorial at the University of Virginia, UCARE along with Student Council is holding focus groups to hear what students, faculty, and community members have to say. UCARE views this as a good way to not only inform people about the memorial and gain insight from the Charlottesville, but also to spread the organizations name to the UVA community. We are holding these focus groups over several weeks to ensure that we can have a wide spectrum of people attend these events. Here is the information:
Be a part of UVA history! Contribute your thoughts and ideas for a memorial to commemorate the enslaved laborers who were an integral part of UVA's past. We want to know what you think an appropriate memorial would look like, where it should be located, and how you think it will affect the university community. This is your chance to speak
candidly, and really have a voice in this effort. All opinions and points of view welcome!
This is a one time and one-‐hour commitment, and refreshments will be served.
