Scientific Report

COLDBEAMS (for ultra-COLD gas for the production of a Bright Electron And Monochromatic ion Source)intends to foster transfer of knowledge and exchange of know-how in order to develop new, well controlled electron and ion sources.

The Project aspires to create new sources with superior performance, in terms of energy spread, brightness and minimum achievable spot size, with respect to the existing ones, and to apply them in several advanced research domains.

Possibility of huge breakthroughs in Focused Ion Beam and in low energy electron source technologies New market

Comments (non scientific)66 months recruitment but only ~34 months secondement

Problem with ER <4 position. Severe cut in PhD positions at UNIPI

Due to financial restriction and due to the fact that the scientific results were sometimes delayed, OP choose to not hire new PhD students on the project before being sure that a valuable project could be performed. Less secondement to CNRS or UNIPI

SOME GOOD NEWS:All fellows (L. Kime, N. Porfido found a job after their secondement)Andrea Fioretti, formerly at LAC has joined the UNIPI team.Matthieu Viteau has been hired at OP

Networking eventsFew courses have been organized (laser cooling, FIB lenses optimization) for seconded researchers to acquire new knowledge.

CONFERENCES:• “Monochromatic ion and electron beams: new sources and

applications”. 30 people (10 feb 2011) Symposium.

• coldbeams conference: http://coldbeams.sciencesconf.org/ (50 people) clearly pushed transfer of knowledge from and to interested people and entities (academy or SME) external or internal to the IAPP project.

They have tremendously strengthen the visibility of the IAPP project.

3) Microscopie de perted’énergie d’électrons à haute résolution

The goal of the HREELM (High Resolution Electron Energy Loss Microscope) project is to combine a novel highly monochromatic electron source from Laboratoire Aimé Cotton (LAC, France) with the Electron Controlled Chemical Lithography experiment from Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d'Orsay (ISMO, France) and with an innovative high-resolution full-field spectroscopic electron microscope (Mainz University, Germany). This unique combination will allow microfocussing monoenergetic (~1 meV), very low energy electrons (0-20 eV) for nanoscale surface structuring and for diagnostic tool. The coupling to a novel spectroscopic full-field microscope, with high spatial, energy, momentum and time resolution (20nm, few meV, 0.003 Angstroms-1 and 150ps, respectively), will also open the way towards high resolution spectroscopic low energy electron imaging and real-space access to ultrafast switching processes (CEA/IRAMIS/SPCSI, France).

4) Deterministic single ion source

• Huge demand for sources of single ions Large number of applications: Quantum computation, ion

implantation, etc.

• Coulomb repulsion (not Rydberg blocade) provide simple solutions for deterministic source.

The idea

• Use fs laser to excite a small volume of atoms (<10 um)

• Blockade limits excited atom number
