RECENT ABNORMALITIES IN EPTESICUS FUSCUS

Cases 1 & 2

Male admitted May. Found grounded. Joints swollen and deterioration of wing membrane. Treated with antibiotics. Joints and membrane functional, but joints still minimally swollen. Bat released in June.

Male admitted with generalized swelling at all joints and tail vertebrae. Minor lacerations noted on dorsal elbows. Developed progressive paralysis of hind legs and dry necrosis of outer fingers left wing. Euthanized. Joint tissue submitted for pathology.

Case 3

Female admitted May with generalized swelling of all joints. Had been seen hanging on wall but found grounded by property owner. Treated with several courses of antibiotics. Swelling not resolving and bat has ceased hanging.

Case 4 Admitted June; severely emaciated,

dehydrated, maggots present dorsal tail and fur, no visible wounds, significant wing membrane deterioration, moderately swollen joints, abnormal appearance of forearms. Died on intake.
