EASTER-2011 Dear Friends in Christ, We are approaching the celebration of the central mystery of Christian message, the death and the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus enters Jerusalem temple during Passover pilgrimage (Ma4k. 11:1-11). Thousands of Passover pilgrims gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate their deliverance from Egypt and how God had formed them into a nation. Politically, this was the time of unrest, and they were looking for a new national deliverer. The Gospel writers present Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem as a new era in the life of the nation and of the church. The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem was a time of Jubilation and hope for the crowd. However, the ruling class was disturbed and plot against Jesus. The riding of Jesus into Jerusalem as King brings out for us three crucial aspect of our discipleship (Ma4k. 11:1-11). First the disciple responded in obedience, when he told them to go and fetch “a colt”. They might have been missing the excitement of being with the crowd, but they put service to Jesus above this, even though it was somewhat puzzling request. Second, the willingness of the owner of the animal to allow Jesus to use it reminds us that discipleship requires the total surrender of all our possessions. Finally, the disciples demonstrate truth about worship. Their admiration of Jesus was a response to who they understood him to be, a mixture of tradition and spontaneity, both exuberantly personal and very public. (David Spriggs, Encounter with God. P.107) Perhaps some of the people who acclaimed Jesus as their Messiah and King would later shout in response to Pilate’s question: “Crucify him, crucify him” (Mk.15:13-14). “Sometime we are also examples of this inconsistency. At one moment we acclaim him as the King, at another we deny him. Holy week is precisely a time for conversion, a time to hear the gospel calling us to be more consistent in our lives, a time to choose Jesus rather than Barabbas, a time to be in solidarity with Simon of Cyrene and the good thief ( Mk.11.21) and the time to be courageous and determined like the woman of Jerusalem.” (Gustavo Gutierrez- Sharing the word…P. 71) May the passion and resurrection of Christ enlighten our hearts and minds for a renewed spirituality.
