Risk Assessments
Why carry out risk assessments?
Legislation requires it, for example, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations, Manual Handling regs and others
To identify possible hazards
To ensure appropriate controls are in place
To reduce the risk of harm
Risk Assessments
How do you carry out a risk assessment?
What are the hazards?
For example, are they electrical, chemical or biological?
How might you, or anyone affected by the activity, be harmed?
For example, by contact, ingestion, inhalation.
What control measures need to be put in place?
For example, test all electrical equipment, use a fume-cupboard, wear protective equipment.

Finally
Once a form is completed get your supervisor to check and approve it.
Supervisors and Principal Investigators are responsible for any work carried out by their students and staff
Risk assessments are not completed until they have been checked and registered by the DSO.
