Development of air warfare
Air warfare became important in World War One.
To begin with, aircraft were used for reconnaissance,
that is, to find out what the enemy were doing.
The success of this led to aircraft being armed in order to
attack and defend reconnaissance aircraft.

Alongside fighters, bomber aircraft were also developed to bomb troops out of artillery range.
All sides bombed military targets, but opinions were divided on whether it was acceptable to bomb cities.
This was a tactic Germany adopted, first using Zeppelins and then Gotha bombers.
In World War Two, aircraft became increasingly important. They were faster, better armed and had a longer range.
