MotivationCosts for components utilizing Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies are almost independent from quantity and complexity – a perfect match with the requirements of tools, dies and other pro-ducts of the toolmaking companies. This leads to the question, whether conventional processes can be complemented or even replaced by AM.

If so, in which way can products of the tool and die making industry potentially be replaced and to what extent? Already three rounds of the consortium study with over 80 industry players have been conducted by KEX AG since 2014. Due to the request for a dedicated project regarding the tool making industry, this new focus study is scheduled for December 2016.

Main FocusThe study focusses on the fields of proces-ses, design and services for the toolmaking industry and covers different technological issues, which will be adjusted to the requi-rements of the consortium individually, i.e.:

Productivity � In which way can new machine concepts and recent developments contribute to a higher productivity?

� Which automation measures keep the costs low?

� How can build-up speeds be effectively improved?

Component Design � What are general design guidelines for additive manufactured tools?

� How can tool components be configured and redesigned for AM?

� What are general performance drivers and necessary skills for additive manufactured tools?

Process Quality � How can AM processes be integrated into current toolmaking process chains?

� How can overall process stability be continuously improved?

� Which measures are necessary to certify components and materials?

Economic Attractiveness � What are drivers and barriers for eco-nomic toolmaking applications of AM?

� What are economic applications and benchmarks in toolmaking now and in the future?

� How can costs for additive manufactu-red tools be reliably forecasted?

In cooperation with the most relevant play-ers in this field, this consortium study aspires to create economic as well as technological transparency, emphasizing future trends and developments of the highly dynamic AM technologies.

MethodologyThis study provides an overview on all Additive Manufacturing technologies and related future trends. We will align these trends with requirements from diverse appli-cations within tool and die making. This broad information basis on both technologi-cal capabilities and economical requirements will then be utilized to derive and assess highly attractive technological opportunities and hidden potentials. In order to reach this aim systematically, the study is divided into three stages featuring increasing levels of detail. Transferability of results will always be safeguarded.
