Introduction to 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting
Welcome! 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting is an invitation for you to fast and pray over the course of the next three weeks for a revival of God’s presence and work in your own life and church. When large numbers or high percentages of people are transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ, spiritual awakening is the result. Communities change. Cities change. Nations change. Spiritual awakening is what we need and spiritual revival is the prerequisite.
Each day in this prayer guide, we have included one or more Scriptures to get your focus on God and what He has to say to you through His Word. We are praying that God will increase your hunger for His presence to such a degree that you will make every adjustment required to experience revival and awakening. We are praying that God will increase your faith to believe Him for all He wants to do where you are.
Fasting may be a new discipline for you. Fasting may be denying yourself food, or it could include a fast from television or media for a season. Fasting heightens your hunger for God and your focus on Him, but it also provides you with additional time to pray. Fasting and prayer go together. See the notes on fasting in appendix A on page 47.

What To Do Each Day
1. Focus—Set aside a specific time each day to work through the daily devotionals. Be ready to respond to God’s Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit.
2. Pray—Commit to intentionally praying for Pine Grove and your selected five people.
3. Follow the SOAP Method:
- S for Scripture. Read the daily scripture. Take notice of which verse(s) catches your attention and mark it in your Bible. When you’re done, reread the verse(s) you marked and look for one that particularly speaks to you. Write it in your journal notes.
- O for Observation. Focusing on that scripture, tune in and listen to what God is saying to you through His Word. What is it about this scripture that specifically stands out? What does God want to reveal to you or teach you? Ask the Holy Spirit to be your guide and show what God is saying.
- A for Application. Think of how this verse(s) applies to your life right now. Perhaps it is instruction, encouragement, revelation of a new promise, or correction for a particular area of your life. Use your journal to write how this scripture applies to you today.
- P for Prayer. Wrap up your SOAP time in prayer. Talk to God about what you you’ve just read. This can be as simple as thanking Him for revealing a truth from the scripture, or it may be asking Him for greater insight or wisdom as to how it applies to your life.
-- Remember, prayer is all about relationship. It’s a two-
way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say.
The Weekly Focus During the 21 Days
Week One - Fasting in Spiritual Warfare (Daniel 10)Prayer Focus: Yourself
What happens when a church begins praying and fasting? What happens when men come together to pray for their work, witness, and families? What happens when women gather seeking to lift up their churches, children, and families in prayer? What happens when God’s people humble themselves before Him, seek His face, and pray? The answer is Revival.
Revival begins in the heart of the individual Christ-Follower and continues through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our church and our community. Revival is the result of humility, confession, and repentance.
Week Two – Fasting During Transitions (2 Samuel 1:12)Prayer Focus – My Church (Pine Grove Baptist Church)
In this second week, we are turning our attention to our church. There is no greater institution on this planet than the local church. Heaven and Earth and all that is within will pass away, but God promises to send His Son back for one thing…the local church.

We are calling on God in this second week of prayer to unify our church. To give wisdom to our leadership and conviction to our members. We are fervently praying that God will send Pine Grove Baptist Church 50 souls and 100 new people to our fellowship by December 31, 2017 (5 for 50). Yes, the prayer is audacious, but nothing is impossible with God.
Week Three – Fasting For the Future (Nehemiah 1:1-11)Prayer Focus – My Influence
During week three, we are focusing our energies on the future. Namely the future lives that we will influence for the kingdom of God. Yes, we are trusting God to do His part, but He is also looking for us to do our part. This is where words like boldness, conviction, urgency, love and witness come into practice. The beauty of our gospel is stripped if we don’t tell someone about Jesus and invite them to a place of worship. Our influence is huge!

Day 21 – August 27th Focus: Day 21 and Beyond
Today is the conclusion of the 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting.Yes, this is the last formal day of the prayer guide, but we still have four more months for God to bring the 50 souls and 100 new people to Pine Grove. More importantly, you still have four more months to intentionally pray for your five people.
As you start your day, read Luke 19:1-10 and Matthew 28:18-20.
After reading the two passages, get your phone out and set your phone’s timer to 7 minutes. (If you don’t have a timer on your phone, use your watch, or oven/microwave timer, etc.) For the next 7 minutes, be still and mediate on these two verses.
Begin your meditation with this prayer…
“God, open my heart and mind to the reality of these two passages. Give me eyes to see and ears to hear as you instruct me.”

Ways To Fast
As you consider the potential for prayer with fasting, there are multiple methods for fasting. The following suggestions are associated with fasting:
One meal each day – The fast is not about only giving up food, but also includes praying during mealtime. Jesus said, “Could you not watch with me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40). It takes about an hour to prepare a meal or travel to a restaurant or get ready to eat. This time is a perfect opportunity to pray. Those who work in hot exhausting jobs cannot fast completely because they need their strength and stamina for physical exertion. However, they can sacrifice one meal a day for the Lord.
Two meals each day – Some people can pray for two hours a day, sacrificing two meals to the Lord.
Eat only veggies – This fast involves giving up meats, desserts, and snacks, eating only the food that Daniel most likely ate (The Daniel Fast). While the fast doesn’t give extra time to pray, it is a commitment of the heart that when joined with prayer, moves the heart of God.
Give up television – Secular people might laugh at “fasting television” or “sacrificing television” but it is a commitment to God to place loyalty to Christ first above all else. This is a spiritual choice in response to Christ who promises, “Seek

first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).
Give up sports – Giving up lifting weights, golfing, fishing, jogging or other activity for a season to pray during that time is a choice. It places spiritual exercise above physical exercise. “Bodily exercise profits little, but godliness is profitable for all things” (1 Timothy 4:8).
Restrict cell phone use and text messaging – While some of these communication devices are necessary, they are serious time robbers that could be placed aside for praying.
Give up Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram) – These activities can consume huge chunks of time. Part of a fast could be to cease social media and use the time for prayer and intercession.
Other – There may be something that the Holy Spirit brings to mind that you could place aside for a season while you focus on more prayer.
Spiritual Guidelines for a Daniel Fast
The Daniel Fast is for the body, soul and spirit. While some may want to consider alternate methods for expressing self-discipline for spiritual purposes, the following will assist those wanting to participate on a Daniel Fast.
The Bible teaches us that we are a spirit, we have a soul and we live in a body. The Daniel Fast affects all three parts of us as we enter into a period of time for focused prayer and fasting.
The Body- Certainly our bodies are affected as our diet is changed, for some in very dramatic ways, during the Daniel Fast. Many men and women experience detoxing from caffeine, chemicals and sugar. The symptoms are most often headaches, leg cramps, fatigue and malaise.
Most people lose weight during the Daniel Fast. And many report healings from diabetes, allergies, arthritis and cancer.
The Soul – Frequently referred to as “the flesh” in the Bible, the soul is also greatly impacted during the Daniel Fast. The soul is the seat of our emotions, intellect, personality and will. It is in the “soulish realm” where we experience cravings, frustration, anger … and even happiness.
During the Daniel Fast, your soul may very well rebel against the dramatic change in your diet. Experiencing and winning this battle over the flesh is often one of the most powerful lessons of the Daniel Fast.
The Spirit – Our spirit is that born-again part of us that surrenders to God and then abides with the Father and the Son. Our spirit is filled with the Holy Spirit when we yield to Him. During the Daniel Fast, we want to put our spirit in charge of the other two parts of us. When our flesh is acting out with a craving, we take control of it with our spirit (just as a parent takes control of a rebellious child).
What if I have health issues?
Fasting should never bring harm to the body. If necessary, please consult your health professional before going on the Daniel Fast or making any major dietary change.

What is the Daniel Food Fast?
The Daniel Fast is a biblically based partial fast. It is a method of fasting that men, women and young people all over the world are using as they enter into the spiritual discipline of prayer and fasting.
There are two anchoring scriptures for the Daniel Fast. In Daniel 1, the Prophet ate only vegetables (that would have included fruits) and drank only water. From these scriptures we get two of the guidelines for the fast:
1. Only fruits and vegetables2. Only water for a beverage
Then in Daniel 10, we read that the Prophet ate no meat nor any precious breads or foods and he drank no wine for 21 days. From Daniel 10, we get the third and fourth guidelines:
3. No sweeteners and no breads4. No alcohol consumption
Finally, with all the above puzzle pieces, we conclude that no artificial or processed foods nor any chemicals are allowed on the Daniel Fast.
An important question to ask yourself…
During your Daniel Fast you will have many times when you might want to “stretch the rules” a little bit. For example, even though the guidelines say we are able to drink only water…you conclude that herbal teas are vegetables and water is therefore will go ahead and drink herbal teas during the Daniel Fast. But I encourage you to learn a powerful spiritual lesson by asking yourself (examining your heart) the question,
“Why do you want the herbal teas?” My guess is that the answer will be, “Well, I just want them. I can’t drink only water. I have to have something else.”
The Daniel Fast teaches us to deny our “selves” and instead put our spirit in control over our flesh. As you plan your meals and eat your food, keep in mind that the definition of a fast is to deny food for a spiritual purpose.
