ISOLATION TRANSFORMERS

Isolation Transformers are designed to be used on one or three phase systems where galvanic isolation and voltage step-up or step-down required.

Input and output voltages may vary up to 5000V and they pos-sibily include voltage taps or shield windings. Power ratings of these transformers go up to 1600kVA.

The electrical connection is done via terminal blocks or bars. Any vectoral connection type is availiable on request.

Auto transformers are used to change the level of voltage without providing galvanic isolation. They are an economical alternative to isolating transformers.

MEDICAL TRANSFORMERS

Medical transformers used for isolating systems in purpose of maintaining human safety and protecting sensitive medical equipments in hospitals and medical clinics. Therefore these transformers are designed and built to meet the specifications for these places. The IEC 61558-2-15 standard describes the addi-tional specifications.

Medical transformers can be produced according to the cus-tomers voltage requests. Different voltage ratings for different regions are applicable.

POWER FACTOR CORRECTION SYSTEMS

In order to make a sustainable prevention in increase of the har-monic currents and harmonic voltage distortions in the harmonic intense environment, the power factor correction(PFC) systems should be maintained with filters.

Harmonic filter reactors are placed between the power capacitors and mains in the filtered power factor correction systems. The reactance within the PFC systems which include the capacitors and reactors is higher than the one that only includes capacitors without reactors. Due to the incrementing reactance, capacitors’ current is reduced in the systems that contain harmonic voltage distortions.

Since the serial resonance frequency of the capacitor and the re-actor is conserved within a secure level considering the harmonic generation of a facility, resonance in the harmonic frequency be-tween the PFC system and the mains is prevented.

Although the general architecture of the system seems to be simple, the dimensioning and the correct component selection requires high quality engineering and experience. In order to maintain a sustainable work performance and observe expected benefits, the resonance frequency should be carefully handled. This requires proper capacitor selection, suitable harmonic filter reactor-capacitor matching, and well-designed panel that should endure to the temperature rise due to the heating in harmonic filter reactor and capacitor.

On the other hand reactive power compensation is commonly per-ceived as using capacitor banks to compensate for the reactive en-ergy consumption of inductive loads such as motors. However, in some cases, load characteristics may become capacitive and the excess reactive energy in the system should be compensated us-ing inductive load banks, called SHUNT REACTORS. Capacitive load characteristics are commonly observed at power lines, residential and commercial areas as well as data centers where uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are heavily used.

Utilization of underground power lines becomes more popular as the cable technology progresses. Under-ground power cables comprise dielectric materials for insulation, which allow them to withstand medium and high voltages, however cause a significant capacitive impact on the system. Especially, cables longer than a few kilometers produce substantial reactive power. Since most of the loads fed through these cables are inductive and cable itself has an inductance, their capacitive effect is negligible under full load. How-ever under reduced or no-load operation, their capacitive behavior becomes significant, such that the ratio of reactive power to real power may exceed the legislation limits. This results in high penalties especially on installations where reactive power measurement period is one day or shorter.

HARMONIC FILTER REACTORS

Detuned Harmonic Filter Reactors, are used in series with capaci-tor banks in power factor correction units. By using these types of detuned reactors it is possible to avoid following negative effects on system.

• Overcurrent during switching on the capacitor banks• Overload of capacitor banks because of the harmonic resonance.• Short lifetime on capacitors• Overheating of the utility transmission cables.• Overheating of the distribution transformer.• Unintended triggering of the protective devices.• Distortion of utility voltage waveform and problems on voltage sensitive devices• Interferences on data transmission systems• Unexplainable faults in electronic boards

Chosing the correct detuned filter reactor and capacitor value on de-tuned power factor correction systems is very important. To obtain optimum performance form a detuned power factor correction sys-tem following criteria must be controlled and met during the pairint of the reactors and capacitors.

CHOOSING CORRECT HARMONIC FILTER REACTOR

• The resonance frequency must be chosen according to harmonic analysis of the system• The voltage across the terminals of the capacitor will increase because of the inductive reaction of the rector. The rated voltage of the capacitors must be chosen according to the resonance frequency.• In detuned power factor correction systems, presence of higher voltage rated capacitors and reac-tors causes a difference between rated capacitor power and obtained reactive power. The obtained power must be calculated in order to avoid low compensation.• The reactors will genereate extensive heat due to heavy harmonic load. The cabinets must be de-signed to disperse this heat.

SHUNT REACTORS

Shunt reactors are mainly used in places with long power trans-mission and distribution lines. Especially for supplying telecomu-nication stations in urban areas like radio, GSM and TV transmit-ters with electricity, long overland cables must be used. These cables have a capacitive characteristic at longer distances. This capacitive characteristic causes the system to become overcom-pensated. This results in penalties in electricity bills because of high capacitive demand.

Furthermore this capacitive characteristic causes the line volt-age to increase and may damage sensetive equipment connected to it.This problem can also be observerd in industrial zones, wide campuses, solar farms etc.

The solution for this problem is loading the system inductively with shunt reactors. These reactors can be used single or three phased. They will utilize necessary inductive load for the system to stop overcompensation.

MEDIUM VOLTAGE CAPACITORS

These units are special capacitors designed to be used for power factor correction systems at medium voltage levels (up to 34.5 kV). The dielectric material is low loss polypropylene film. An adequate amount of capacitor elements, chosen ac-cording to power and voltage level, are connected in series and parallel. The unit is impregnated with an environmental-ly harmless impregnation substance. This way, in an unlikely event of failure, the leaking material will not be harmful.

Sinhle phase and three phase units are available at given volt-age levels below.

MV IRON CORE HARMONIC FILTER REACTORS

These units are iron cored detuned filter reactors to be used at medium voltage power factor correction applications up to 12kV.

Detuned filters are power factor correction units with anti-res-onance reactors connected in series with capacitor steps. The low impedance at 50 Hz and high impedance at common har-monic frequencies allows them to effectively protect the ca-pacitor banks against the harmful effects of harmonics, while retaining the reactive power compensation function.

Iron core medium voltage detuned reactors are mainly used at applications where space is limited. In some cases they may present a more economical solution than an air cored counter-part. These units are designed for indoor use only.

MV AIR CORE HARMONIC FILTER REACTORS

These units are iron cored detuned filter reactors to be used at me-dium voltage power factor correction applications up to 34.5kV.

Air core reactors have similar electrical characteristics as iron core reactors, but they lack an iron core. These reactors make up for the lack of magnetic material by having more turns in windings, thus re-sulting in larger dimensions. Since it is very hard to actually saturate air, these type reactors have excellent linearity, maintaining same amount of inductance value, regardless of current.

Air core reactors can be used independently, or they can be mounted on top of each other.

CURRENT LIMITING REACTORS

Current limiting reactors for medium voltage applications up to 34.5kV are used to dampen the transient current spikes that happen during the turn on of various electrical components and machines. Most common example is the power factor correction capacitors. During the initial charging of these capacitors a very large current spike occurs.

These reactors, when connected in series with a capacitor bank, prevent this spike, thus preventing protection devices from kicking in and shutting the system down. Furthermore the additional imped-ance provided by these units can be used to reduce the short circuit current of the system, allowing for circuit breakers with lower short circuit capacity to beused.

Air core reactors can be used independently, or they can be mounted on top of each other.
