1. Security and Shelter The security and shelter function provides
the physical and psychological security and comfort in the classroom.
The fire escape posters and classroom rules provide the students with a feeling of being secure and protected.

2. Social Contact The social contact function provides
interaction amongst the students and teacher while in the classroom.
The teacher arranged
the desks into four
groups, with four
students in each
group. Each group
has their own bins
filled with extra
paper, scissors, glue
and other essentials.

3. Symbolic Identification
This function represents the students and teacher within the classroom. Anyone entering the classroom should be able to understand what the students are currently learning.
This word wall not only shows where the students are in their learning, but it also represents the teacher’s spontaneous and fun personality with the fun colors and colorful border.

4. Task Instrumentality The task instrumentality function is how the
teacher and students get tasks done in the classroom. The work station board
demonstrates where the students will go during their small group activity time.

5. Pleasure The pleasure function is simply decorations
that make the classroom more intimate and friendly.
Owls are a central theme
to this classroom, so there
are many owls placed all
around the room. This
makes the room look a
little more lively and fun.

6. Growth Growth refers to anything located in the
classroom that promotes cognitive development and academic achievement.
This is the classroom library, the picture shows all the book baskets neatly labeled with the subjects. However, they are also organized by shelf so that the more advanced books are at the bottom and the “easy” books are on the top shelf.
