Bishop Auckland born Andy Cook (22), whose parents live in Ferryhill, has been voted the Young Player of the Year in the Non League Paper’s annual awards.Andy, who plays for Grimsby Town, collected his award at Craven Cottage, the home of Premiership club Fulham last week.Andy, who became the
Mariners’ first summer signing in 2012, capped off a memorable season with the award. The striker scored 11 times in his first season playing full-time football, including the opening goal at Wembley in the FA Trophy final against Wrexham. But although the Welsh side went on to win the
final, Cook’s contribution did not go unrewarded.“It was a good season for me personally and I enjoyed myself and I am really pleased to win the award,” said Andy, who will be aiming for league football next season after the club narrowly missed out on promotion at the end of the last campaign.

This summer will truly be an exciting one for one Woodham Academy student. Selected as part of the student leadership programme at Woodham, Richie Howe from Chilton is looking forward to a once-in-a-lifetime oppor-tunity to volunteer on a traditional American log cabin style summer camp, in New Hampshire, USA.The programme, which has been developed by Woodham, enables 16-year-olds to travel to, and coach at Camp Cody, a summer camp with almost 80 years of history.Situated on Lake Ossipee in New Hampshire, students will live in log cabins and work with campers from all over America, an opportu-
nity usually only available to students aged 18 plus. The programme is the first of its kind in the UK. Richie had to go through a strict application and interview process before he was selected to take part in the scheme. Along with three other students, Richie will spend his time coaching American children aged 7-15 in a multitude of activities including water skiing, wind surfing and kayaking, alongside the traditional sports of baseball, basketball and American Football. Not only will he have the summer of a lifetime, but he will also develop essential skills and char-acteristics needed in leadership, which will undoubtedly see him
continue to develop into a successful, mature and dynamic individual ready to realise his dreams and ambitions as a young adult. Richie will be partaking in an advanced training programme in preparation for his departure in July, developing his coaching and leadership skills. Jon Tait, Assistant Head Teacher at Woodham and leader of the Camp Cody programme commented, “This is a wonderful and truly unique opportu-nity for our students. The benefit that this will have for them as young people cannot be underestimated. The summer will now be a great way to utilise their energy and enthusiasm for sport and helping young people”.
Woodham students to coach in America
Kieron Lee Wynn, aged 20 of Church Lane, Ferryhill, believed that Barry Richardson owed him £90, which he had repeatedly requested from him, so when the opportunity arose, on 4th May, he stole a Giro cheque to the value of £106-43 which was payable to Richardson. Wynn also took a household bill and others details belonging Richardson, which enabled him to cash the cheque. He claims that he returned £15 to Richardson, who states that he is owed the full amount. Wynn also faced charges
that on 7th May he drove an unregistered Pit Bike on Grasmere Road without insurance. In defence it was stated that earlier in the year, Wynn had been ‘sailing close to the wind’ with regard to his offending but there had been a turning point for the better since recently gaining an apprenticeship. Wynn, who is currently serving a community order and owes the court over £1,300 in fines, was sentenced to a further twelve months community order and ordered to pay Barry Richardson £50 in compensation.

The Ferryhill Six are holding a plant sale on Saturday 1st June from 10am on the corner of Cleves Court estate in Ferryhill. There will be lots of bargains with summer bedding plants, perennials and tomato and vegetable
The brand new Ferryhill Volunteers Group is introducing a regular programme of Community Market Days, the first of which will be held on Friday 19th July.
Lee Gray, aged 26, of Coniston Road, Ferryhill, pleaded guilty to a charge that, on 5th May on Coronation Road, Chilton, he drove a Peugeot 206 whilst over the legal limit of alcohol. The court at Newton Aycliffe heard that, at around 2am that morning, police stopped the vehicle due to the manner in which it was being driven. Gray, who was fully coop-erative with officers, failed a roadside breath test and
two further tests whilst in custody. He told police that he had had three drinks and had intended to have something to eat before driving friends home. He had since sold his car for £400 as he fully expected to receive a driving ban.It was then brought to the attention of the court that the defendant owed £1,038 in unpaid fines and that he was failing to meet the scheduled repayments agreed with the court.
Gray, who is employed with sheeting and cladding in the building trade, would not lose employment due to a driving ban as he had arranged lifts to work.Magistrates reminded the defendant of his obligation to pay off his fines before sentencing. Gray was ordered to pay a further fine of £275, plus a £28 Victim Support Surcharge, to be consoli-dated with existing fines and repaid at the rate of £30 per week. He was disqualified from driving for eighteen months.

Dear Editor,
Please could I take this opportunity to give well deserved recognition to Hannah and her team at New Dance Generation.
My daughter attends the class regularly at Ferryhill Community Hub and it’s fantastic to see her and the other children enjoying it as much as they do!
So once again, a huge thank you to NDG for all of the hard work you have put into setting this up.

Dear Editor,
Now that all the votes have been counted and the democratic wish of the electorate noted (if not agreed with by all) I would like to use a personal vote of thanks to everyone who invested their confidence in me.
It truly was a resounding lesson in democracy that I know will not have gone unnoticed by everyone involved in local politics.
Councillor Joe Makepeace,Ramsey Drive, Ferryhill.
Dear Editor,
Could I take this opportunity to thank all the voters in the Dean Bank & Ferryhill Ward of Ferryhill Town Elections for voting from me and returning myself for another term of office on the said Town Council.
I promise that I shall carry out my duty to the best of my ability. Once again thank you all.

Following a week when all junior games were called off due to bad weather, the bank holiday weekend started with the best day of the summer when the club’s senior sides played the highly rated Castle Eden. A near full strength first XI were away from home to the team sitting 4th in the league. Castle Eden elected to bat first and despite a slow start, they declared after 46 overs with 193 runs on the board for the loss of 7 wickets. Vinny Gash who was only drafted into the side at the last minute produced his best senior cricket bowling performance, returning figures of 4 for 30 in 12 overs. He was well supported by Brady Smith and professional Mohammad Nawaz. At the tea interval the Castle team were clearly confident of victory and when Mainsforth opener Neil Pratt was bowled in the first over, the home side’s confidence was sky high. However Josh Peel (22) and Nawaz (52) steadied the ship and with Tom Orton reaching 42 not out, at the end of the match Mainsforth finished on 170
for 9 to claim an excellent draw. The second XI game at home was a mirror of the first team game, with Mainsforth batting first and building up a score of 186 for 9. In reply the unbeaten Castle Eden came close, finishing on 181 for 7 for the game to end in a draw. A good crowd at the Mainsforth Sports Complex enjoyed excellent weather, a good game of cricket, with a number of compli-mentary comments about the performance of the club’s juniors who contrib-uted to an entertaining afternoon of sport. On Thursday 30th May, from 6pm, the first XI are at home to Shildon in a twenty over Carlsberg Cup Match. For those readers who have not been to a cricket match for a while these 20 over matches offer exciting non-stop action. This is followed on Saturday 1st June, from 1.30pm with a second XI league game against local rivals Evenwood. Support for the club has been increasing steadily, but new supporters will always be made welcome at the home of cricket in Ferryhill.
