"Easter is a time to celebrate new life and what better way to breathe new life into those who need your help the most than by giving just an hour of your time to give blood?" asked a spokesperson. "Even if you are unable to donate on your next visit the NBS would like you to register as a donor. What better way to enter a new season than by offering patients in your local hospitals a glimmer of hope." Anyone aged over 17, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12 lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. A blood drive will be taking place at Shildon Methodist Hall on Friday, April 9th, between 2.30pm and 3.45pm, and again between 4.30pm and 7.00pm. hERITAGE TRACTION CAB IT! AT LOCOMOTION

Visitors will be able to access the cab of the prototype Deltic at Locomotion’s Heritage Traction Cab It! event.

Visit Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon on Saturday, April 10th and Sunday, April 11th for Heritage Traction Cab It! – a chance to get on board some very special vehicles in the museum’s collection. At the Heritage Traction Cab It! event, visitors will be able to get on the footplates of DP1, the prototype Deltic; North Eastern Railway No. 1; and BR Class 71 No. E5001. A knowledgeable team of museum staff and volunteers will be on hand to give people an insight into the life of an engine driver, and answer any questions people might have on the historic vehicles. The iconic prototype Deltic was built as a demonstrator

locomotive by English Electric in 1955. This locomotive resulted in 22 similar locomotives being ordered by British Rail, which became their Class 55.North Eastern Railway No. 1 was built in Gateshead in 1905. It was built to work on the railway line from the Tyne quays to Newcastle upon Tyne’s mainline. This route was steep (an average of 1:27), curved and mostly in tunnel – the cab of a steam locomotive working this line would often fill with smoke, making it unpleasant and dangerous for crews. The solution to this was to make the line an electric-worked railway.BR Class 71 No. E5001 is an

electric locomotive powered either via a third rail or overhead wire. This class of locomotive pulled the famous Golden Arrow luxury boat train of the Southern Railway and later British Railways. The Golden Arrow linked London with Dover, where passengers took the ferry to Calais to join the Fleche d’Or of the Chemin de Ferd due Nord and later SNCF, which took them on to Paris. What’s more, visitors to the museum will have the chance to enjoy a footplate ride on the Dutch diesel shunter Annette, built in 1955. Tickets, priced £5 per person, will be available from the shop in the museum’s Collection Building on the day.

BANK hOLIDAY BIN COLLECTIONS

People in Shildon are reminded to check for changes to their bin collection days over the Easter holidays.Durham County Council has placed stickers on all household waste bins informing people of collection arrangements on Bank Holidays, up to and

including August.Oliver Sherratt, Durham County Council Head of Direct Services, said, “We want to make sure that everyone is clear about when to put their bins out.“Our aim is to provide as normal a service as possible over the holiday weekend, which in some areas of the

county involves collecting on Good Friday.”Residents who have not received a bin sticker should contact their local council office.Bank Holiday collection arrangements are also featured on the council’s website at www.durham.gov.uk/bincollections.

MEDICAL EvIDENCE REQUIREDMark Bassett, of St. Philip’s Close, Auckland Park, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving without due care and attention when he appeared before Magistrates recently. However, he entered no plea to a second charge of failure to give a specimen of urine for laboratory test in the course of the investigation into whether

he had committed an offence contrary to the Road Traffic Act. On December 4th, the 41 year-old was driving on the A689 at Sedgefield when he was stopped by police. At Spennymoor Police Station he failed to give a specimen of urine but the defence solicitor stated that this was because the

defendant was unable to do so and not because he was being obstructive. Matters were adjourned until April 21st to allow time for a supporting medical report to be provided by the defence and Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe will then deal with both matters. Bassett was released on unconditional bail.

EXCEPTIONAL hARDShIP APPLICATION

George William Gowland was granted an adjournment in order to allow him to seek legal advice and he will return before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates on April 12th when an application for exceptional hardship will be heard. The 35 year-old, from Richardson Terrace, Coronation, was before Magistrates to answer two charges relating to motoring incidents in Newton Aycliffe on February 12th. At around 7.50pm that evening, Gowland was seen driving away from an off-licence and officers followed the VW Bora, attempting to stop the vehicle in Meadowfield Way. They eventually stopped the car after a short pursuit but Gowland

then ran off. He was chased and quickly apprehended. He was breathalysed and found to be below the legally prescribed limit of alcohol. He told police that the reason he had ran off was because he had no insurance cover.Gowland was not represented in court but told Magistrates that he had not driven recklessly or exceeded the speed limit. He had failed to stop only because he was at a junction and had continued to drive to a place were it was safe to stop the vehicle. He added that he had driven the car so that another person, who was drunk, did not drive it and he believed that the owner of the vehicle had insurance which

covered him. Gowland expressed concerns that he would be unable to get his children to school in Shildon or to carry out his work if he was to lose his licence. Before releasing the defendant on unconditional bail, the chairman of the Bench reminded the defendant that to apply for exceptional hardship in the case, matters needed to be seen to come from necessity not out of convenience.

FLOwER CLUB MEETING

A Shildon couple celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary 50 years after they wed at St. Andrew’s Church, South Church, on Friday March 26th, 1960.John Slater was born in Auckland Terrace, whereas his wife, Brenda, is originally from Bishop Auckland. John went to the Council School, which is now known as Thornhill. Brenda attended All Saints, but lived in West Auckland until she was 11 years-old.The couple have known each other nearly all of their lives through a family connection.John started work as a colour mixer at Aycliffe Textiles on Dabble Duck in 1953. He worked there until the company moved away to Carlisle in 1965, when he

started work as a welder at Shildon works, staying until it closed in 1984.Brenda’s first job was at Westools in St. Helen Auckland; she later went to Paton & Baldwins in Darlington. The day they were married, they moved into a house in Victoria Street, the same home they reside in now.John and Brenda have two daughters, Sharon and Diane; Sharon lives in Shildon, but Diane has moved to Cornwall. The couple have five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Twice a year, the family go on a special journey to visit Diane and two of their grandchildren in Bude, Cornwall.John is an excellent artist, with many of his fabulous pictures

displayed around his home. He used to regularly exhibit his paintings in Barnard Castle and Darlington, and a number of his paintings have spread throughout the world, to places including Australia, Mexico, America, Canada, South Africa and Spain. He also used to enjoy fishing; entering competitions ran by the Railway. Brenda was a keen knitter, and enjoyed cross-stitching and card making. The couple celebrated the joyous occasion with a carvery alongside family and friends, at The Countryman, Bolam. Speaking of the strength of their relationship, the couple said that, as with all couples, they argue from time to time, but they never really fall out.

Small community groups will be given a boost thanks to plans to set aside cash especially for them.Five of Durham County Council’s Area Action Partnerships are setting aside budgets for a Small Grants Fund, including that in Middridge and Newton Aycliffe. It is hoped that the fund will make a difference at a local level and involve local communities in the decision-making process. Groups can apply for grants from between £50 and £2,000, depending upon the criteria.Newton Aycliffe and

Middridge AAP will look at supporting all ‘grass roots’ community and voluntary sector groups.Andy Coulthard, Coordinator for Mid Durham Rural West AAP, said, “Sometimes it’s the small amounts of money that can make the most difference. We recognise that to make the AAPs work we need to be working closely with our key community groups to support them and raise their profiles to help them grow and develop.”For more information on the grants available in Middridge, call GAMP on 01388 811115.

Bill and Pearl Horner celebrated 50 golden years together on Saturday March 19th, also the day of her birthday. Exactly fifty years previous, the couple were married at St. John’s Church before enjoying a wonderful honeymoon in London, which is also where they decided to celebrate their special anniversary. While in the capital, the couple had a marvellous time

visiting the London Eye and taking in a number of shows, which both Bill and Pearl love. The Horners have lived in Shildon for all their married life. Bill worked at Shildon Works from 1950 until its closure in 1984; he served his time as a wagon repairer and prospered, eventually becoming an Assistant Repairs Controller in charge of the inspectorate.

Pearl worked at Pages, working for both father and son, Leonard and Anthony Page, for forty four years. On the afternoon of Sunday 21st, after returning home, the couple were whisked away for something to eat. Unbeknown to them, the family had arranged a surprise meal at the Bay Horse in Middridge. Pearl said that it was the icing on the cake for a fabulous weekend.

Youngsters in the town are invited to go along to the Young Entertainers’ Wacky Workshops at Sunnydale Leisure Centre, from 11.00am to 4.00pm on Wednesdays 7th and 14th of April.A spokesperson said, “These workshops are open to all young people aged 8 to 16

A pilot for a Shildon Community Safety Awards Scheme, initiated by Shildon Community Safety Group working alongside all three Primary schools in the town, has recently been completed. The scheme consisted of engaging with Year 5 pupils in a series of five workshops, covering topics such as alcohol, anti-social behaviour, the environment, litter and dog fouling. Feedback from all the schools was positive, with all of them indicating that they would like the work to continue. Therefore, with the help of The Community Safety Partnership's partner agencies, and subject to funding, it is hoped that the scheme will start again in September. A spokesperson commented,

"The Community Safety Group would like to thank the schools for their co-operation and patience in helping us to deliver these workshops and, despite a few ‘teething problems’, we believe the scheme has been a real success and we are grateful for the opportunity to work with the children in this very valuable area of work."Our thanks also to our partners in this work, Durham County Council, County Durham Fire & Rescue Service, The School Nurses and The Community Safety Partnership. "Well done to all the Year 5 pupils at the three primary schools in the town who are all now proud owners of the Community Safety Award medal!"

Elm Road WMC’s Saturday team will be playing in the Norman Wright Cup Final against Wearhead United on Good Friday, April 2nd at

Crook Town A.F.C. Kick-off is at 11.00am.A club spokesperson said, “The team and the management would appreciate your support”.

ELM ROAD CUP FINAL

GOAL-FEST FOR ShILDONAT DEAN STREET

Shildon AFC got back to winning ways on Saturday 27th March 2010, when they entertained high flyers Ashington and were worthy winners by 5 goals to 1.The first chance of the game fell to the visitors when No. 10 Glen Taylor was clean through, but Shildon's keeper Keith Finch stood firm with a great save.Despite the promising start, 15 minutes of mediocre football followed, with neither side creating any real chances. However, things changed on the 25 minute mark. After a brilliant run Steve Walklate passed to Sam Garvie who found Martin Houlahan. He still had a lot of work to do, but he beat two defenders before hammering low into the net.Two minutes later, Ashington had a glorious chance to level when Bobby Moore let Alex Benjamin through, only for Benjamin to miss kick right in front of goal. The Railwaymen were now playing their comfortable passing game, with neat one -

twos, but their final pass was letting them down. Despite the final ball proving somewhat elusive, Sam Garvie, Jamie Harwood, Steven Johnson and Martin Houlahan all spurned opportunities before half-time.Half Time: Shildon 1 Ashington 0.Shildon continued in the 2nd half in much the same vein as they finished the first. Their good work was rewarded when on 66 minutes, when they extended their lead. A cross from Steven Johnson found Chris Hughes at the far post to push the ball home. Two minutes later, Ashington problems were compounded when Alex Houlsby was given his marching orders for bringing down Sam Garvie, in full flight, inside the box. Garvie stepped up for the kick, but keeper Karl Dryden blocked his shot and from the rebound Chris Hughes missed an open goal. With the extra man, Shildon were able to dominate and capitalised their advantage. On 72 minutes it was 3 – 0.

A through ball found Steven Johnson who pulled it back to Andrew Johnson, who scored with his first kick of the game, having just been brought on.Against the run of play, Ashington pulled a goal back on 78 minutes; a cross from the right found David Collin unmarked and he lobbed the ball over keeper Keith Finch. Two minutes later Shildon restored their three goal advantage when a hard shot from Martin Houlahan was blocked by keeper Karl Dryden and the rebound looped into the air, dropping perfectly for Steve Johnson head home.Just for good measure, Shildon added a fifth. In the dying embers of the match a left wing corner found Chris Bell who headed home for to cap a 5 - 1 win to the home side. This win saw Shildon overtake Ashington in the league, they are now in 5th place and the league’s form side.Final Score: Shildon 5 Ashington 1.The Club's £100 monthly cash draw winner for March, 2010, was number 31, Colin Leek.

Grey Horse Over 40’s played the 2nd division cup semi final away at Wearmouth Southwick Carpets and eventually came out winners after extra time and penalties were needed.A strong squad was available against the mid table opposition. Horse took time to settle into the game with the home team showing determination and full of effort. Wearmouth opened the scoring just before half time with a break from the half way line that was clearly offside to go one up.Horse began to create more efforts on goal in the second half looking to get back into the game. Mid way through the half a Neil Bannister corner

was flicked on for Jeff Dixon to head home from 5 yards out at the back post. Both teams had good chances to score more goals, but the full time score ended one all. Extra time was played with both teams looking for the goal to win the game but no more were scored.Penalties were taken and, with the home team blazing two wide and keeper Stuart Timmiss saving one, Horse went through 2 – 3. The Final to be played 1st May at Herrington FC against Sunderland Oddies.Next game: Hartlepool Station Hotel (H) Please meet in Rec at 9.50am.

Goals win games but sometimes that doesn’t always tell the full story. Shildon Railway Juniors' recent victory against Whiteleas Pascoes was built on a solid foundation of defending, which was epitomised by the Man - of - the - Match performance of Turner, who rarely looked flustered and commanded his defence well. Up front, Dobson was strong and always a good outlet, with Shoulder looking lively and always looking to create an opening. The first half saw a nervy Shildon playing into the wind and enjoying the lion’s share of the possession. Corner went close with a cross come

shot, but all the home side’s dominance came to nothing and the half ended goalless.Second half saw Upton and Cooper replacing Louth and Turner. With the wind behind Shildon's luck changed, Joyce was fouled and, from an acute angle, Upton scored at the near post with the resultant free kick. Brown could have scored a second but missed an open goal from a headed effort. This was an excellent team effort and one incident particularly demonstrated that Shildon’s luck could be changing. Final score Shildon 1 Whiteleas Pascoes 0.
