Modern bhangra
From the 1950s, many people from the Punjabi region moved to the UK, and continued to play traditional bhangra.
Bhangra then mixed with Western music. It was important for Asian people born in the UK to fuse their cultural heritage with contemporary styles. This music developed in two phases. At first, live bhangra with live bands developed from the 1980s to the 1990s.
♫ Bands like Kalakaar, formed in the late 1990s, mix traditional bhangra with Western sounds,
using instruments and beats from both cultures. Listen to their track
‘Bhangra sade nal pao ji’ and listen for traditional bhangra and
Western sounds. ♫

Bollywood
Hollywood is the home of the American film industry.Bombay is the former name for Mumbai, the capital of India. The term Bollywood was coined to refer to the large film industry in Mumbai.
Bollywood films are usually musicals, and contain many songs and dances. The success of a film is often based on the music, so the soundtracks are sometimes released before the film.
Bollywood films are made in Hindi and Urdu, but it is now common to also hear English words and phrases.

Music and song
♫ Watch an acting scene followed by a dance from a
Bollywood film. List the features you feel are
traditionally Indian and those that show the influence of
Western society. ♫
Like in Western musicals, the songs can describe the action taking place or express the feelings of a character. The songs are always accompanied by a dance. In more recent years is has become common for the music and dance to be a fusion of Indian and Western styles.
