PROPERTY GEOLOGY

These 16 claims lie entirely in a 2Km. wide belt of Timiskaming Group sedimentary and alkalic volcanic rocks. The sedimentary rocks inclade arkosic and lithic wackes and arenite* and polymictic conglomerate. The alkah'c volcanic rocks are porphyritic trachytes which occur as massive flows and agglomerates.

The property lies along the axis of a large synclinal fold, the Beaver Lake S yncfine. This fold has been structurally modified by bedding parallel shears that repeat lithologic; along the northern fimb. and by cross-cutting shears that have truncated the southern limb.S everal important shear zones transcect the claim group (see map). The E -W trending Bear Creek shear zone follows Bear Creek on the southwest part of the property and is offset to the north in the central part, and then continues across the eastern half of the claim group. The NE -S W trending fault or shear that snristrafly offsets the Bear Creek shear may be part of a major fault mapped by Thompson (1943) as separating trachyte rocks from well-bedded turbidities. Another important shear zone trends across the three northernmost claims and apparently follows the contact between conglomerate and sandstone units to the north and trachyte flows and agglomerate to the south.

During the 1987-88 exploration by Northern Dynasty (report available for viewing upon request), a grab sample taken from quartz and tourmaline veinlets exposed in an old trench at 17+40 W/17+OON assayed 0.26 oz. per ton au., also half core sampling in altered conglomerate produced assays of 0.05 oz. per ton au.

Anomalous gold values were also obtained from altered shears and quartz veins in a number of locations. Many old pits, trenches, and shallow shafts tested quartz veins on the cliff marking the southern contact of the main Conglomerate * Agglomerate ridge as well as other locations. Some anomalous gold values were obtained from these sites.

REGIONAL GEOLOGY

The Larder Lake "break" is one of a system of major shears .that are part of the Kirkland Lake-Larder Lake Deformation Zone. These major shears are generally continuous and are characterized by zones of carbonate alteration, talc-chlorfte schist, isoclinal foldings, and transposition of bedding. The majority of the sedimentary rocks in the area are generally referred to as the Thniskaming Group. Fairly flat-lying sedimentary rocks of Proterozoic Cobalt Group rest with angular unconformity on the moderately to deep dipping Archean rocks.

The wide spread metavolcanics constitute a layered sequence of ultramafic, mafic, felsic volcanic assemblages of komatitic. tholeiitic, calc-alkalic and alkalic affirates.

Fundamental points concerning the localization of gold mineralization have been presented for the Abitibi greenstone belt in general (Hodgson. 1983) and for the Larder Lake area in particular (Hamilton. 1986). Gold deposits in the Abitibi belt are structurally controlled, commonly occurring in the vicinity of the intersection of major fault or shear structures or along branch faults that splay off the major "breaks". Most of the major past and present gold producers in Kirkland Lake - Larder Lake area are located near the intersection of ME-S W trending shears and E-W shears. The areas of intersection are favourable sites of mineralization owing to the strvoturidh/BD induced permeability in highly deformed rocks localizing the flow of^ftDER LAKH hydrothermal fluids.
