October 2015 Meeting Review

There were 117 members and 11 visitors attending our October meeting. Door prizes of patterns and a calendar were donated by Mary Young, Lois MacLean, and Bridget O’Flaherty; winners were Christine Piché, Nijole Destin, Arlene Langstaff, Leona Blair, and Rosemarie Alarie. There were 14 items for Show and Tell including huge and small quilts, wall hangings, a stool, bags, and a calendar of Bridget O’Flaherty’s own quilts. Peggy Beckett asked if anyone is interested in sewing feminine hygiene kits for the Days for Girls Project, to please contact Louise McDiarmid. Carol Darou announced that our blog is now being administered by Cathy Price. (To find how to get onto the blog, see the back page of our newsletter, under Reminders.) Carol also advised that our Membership Directory is being printed in November, so although you can join/renew at any time during the year, your name and contact details will not be included in the Directory unless you have paid by the end of October. She also reminded members that Jean Sherwin is still looking for people to fill the positions of Vice-President, Treasurer, Program Coordinator, and Library Coordinator. Carol presented name tags to the following new members: Judy Wood, Julia Egener, Cait Maloney (not present), Rosemarie Bowick, Helen Mowbray, Ingrid Olimer, Wendy Kehoe, Sandy Pulham, Jill Nolan (not present), Linda Lake, Donna Easter (not present), Debbie Mundell. Marilyn Robinson confirmed the date, time, place and menu for the December QT. A sign-up sheet is at the back of the room tonight and she asked people to sign up as she has to give the Civitan the number of people attending as soon as possible. The cost is $15.00 which must be paid by the November meeting. Nancy Jossinet spoke about the possibility of running a round robin and what this involves. If anyone is interested in doing this see her to sign-up.

Heather Buchan thanked everyone who brought in last month’s block of the month. She also thanked people for returning the Lombardy blocks. Heather showed samples of this month’s block, and advised that next month will be foundation piecing as there will be two months to complete it. Marie Amyot presented the books for this month, all of which had been donated to the library by members. Guest speaker Bethany Garner also donated a book to the library during Marie’s presentation. Loree Tannett spoke about the sensory quilts and advised that Bonnie Leclair had put together some samples that were at the back for people to see. Loree showed a sample of the Monkey Wrench pattern she has chosen for the charity

quilt; she advised that the retreat for this will be in February and sign-up will be November. Beverley Davidge advised that the recent Fall Retreat was wonderful and the Spring Retreat has been booked. She advised that in November, Joni Newman will be doing a Stained Glass workshop on the day of our meeting. Alexis Mongeau advised that 15 people have registered for Joni Newman’s workshop so far. Sharon Kryvenchuk will also be doing a workshop on November 17; Molly Hartin will be doing a workshop on February 9. Cathy Price who is in charge of this year’s Challenge for Program, referred members to the Alphabet Challenge insert in the newsletter. She had a table set up at the back with Colour ideas for every letter of the alphabet and encouraged members to have a look and make notes. Members reviewed and approved the 2015-2016 budget as presented by the Treasurer.

Library

Women of Grace and Charm by Barb Adams and Alma Allen is a tribute to twelve American Women, including Rosie the Riveter, who served in WWII. For each woman, her story is told and a quilt block is designed. All twelve blocks have a six inch centre star. Different arrangements are given for joining the blocks, some with appliqued or pieced centre blocks. Other patterns are included for redwork, cross stitch, and rug hooking.

Nature's Offerings by Maggie Bonanomi has patterns for projects inspired by the four seasons. Quilts, hooked rugs, pincushions, table runners, and even a silly rabbit are included. Maggie Bonanomi can be contacted at: [email protected]

Outreach

Not much to report this month. We are proceeding with our two projects for this year.

Fidget or Sensory Quilts:

Please continue to think about or make your small quilts. Check the box to either contribute interesting supplies or feel free to take something you can use. So far we have one recipient, Fairview Manor in Almonte. Please feel free to contact a facility you may know about or refer

the name on to me at the meeting. I would like to start distributing the quilts when and every time we have 10.

Charity Quilt:

I will know by the meeting, the date of our In-town Retreat. It will be in February. I will have a list at the meeting that you can sign to indicate interest. The Retreat will run over three days. Friday night will be for cutting and organizing the sewing units; Saturday, we will assemble the units and organize them for the quilt top; Sunday will be the final assembly so the top will be ready for the quilter.

I know this sounds like a lot of work, but many hands make light work. I want to encourage all levels of skill to come. We can all learn something and get to know each other a little better. You do not have to commit to the entire Retreat. Come for a bit of time, do a little work, enjoy the process, just offer what you are free to do. For those who receive eNewsletters, the form that a group will need to apply for the quilt is also attached. Please download it and pass it to a group that you think might be interested. For those who receive hard copy newsletters, you can get an application form from me. Just remind the organization that the deadline is February 1, 2016. They can

give it back to you to pass on to me or mail it to me: Loree Tannett, 66 North Street, Perth, ON K7H 2T2. ~ Loree ~

Above L-R: Modern Baby Quilt (Carole Armstrong); Love

Birds (Lois Roberts); T-shirt Quilt (Carol Darou); Fireworks Wallhanging (Anna Cornel); Below L-R: Scrappy Quilt (Jean Sherwin); Lisa’s Birds (Linda Norris); Northern Neighbours workshop with Carla Alexiuk.

Did you know?

Some tips shared by quilters to Fons & Porter: Wooden figures sold at craft stores make good quilting

designs, especially for kids’ quilts. Alcohol prep pads kept in your sewing box and near your

sewing machine are great if you jab yourself with a needle. You can also use them to clean your needle when it gets sticky from fusibles or glue.

Lay your blocks on pieces of construction paper to help you decide what colours to use for borders on your quilts. When you decide what colour family works, head for that section in the fabric store.

Use pencil grips to protect the points of your small pointed scissors as well as prevent poking and cutting fingers.

Your tips, hints or general news are needed for this section or elsewhere in the newsletter, so please email or give them to Lynne Green. Thanks.
