УРАЛТРАНСМАШURALTRANSMASH
Dear friends!
It is my great pleasure to congratulate the collective of the Ural transport
machine-building works with their enterprise’s 190th anniversary!
The now stable economic development of Sverdlovsk region is a natural
result of policies aimed at the maximum utilization of region’s potential
resources. We link the perspectives of our province’s further prosperity first of
all with the development of the metallurgical branch and machine-building
complex. This is why the anniversary of the Uraltransmash, which is justly
called a pioneer of the machine-building in the Urals, is an important date not
only for the enterprise but for the whole region.
Sverdlovsk region is justly called “a supporting krai of the state”. A major role
is played by such works as the Uraltransmash. This is where the victory was
forged during the years of the Great Patriotic War and the base for the region’s
development was created during the further decades. For a long time Sverdlovsk
province remained a closed region for the rest of the world – people never used
to talk about those many enterprises, which worked for the defence complex of
the country. Today this situation is changing. We proudly demonstrate our
achievements on the traditional International Exhibition of armament, military
machinery and ammunition held nearby Nizhny Tagil. It is worth mentioning
that Uraltransmash’s famous self-propelled artillery takes a special place on it.
In the years of “perestroika” many defence enterprises found themselves
in a critical situation. The conversion of production necessitated some
cardinal changes and the adaptation to the new technologies. The
Uraltransmash managed to overcome these difficulties very well. The civil
production of the enterprise is more and more demanded in the main
industries – metallurgy and railways. We’ve got Sverdlovsk tramway called
“Spektr”, which is already deservingly appreciated by Ural citizens. The base
for the recent successes of the Uraltransmash is the aspiration to continuous
development, search for something new and the caring treatment of the
unique technological experience, which was gained over the years and passed
from one generation to another.
Overcoming all the difficulties it had to go through, the works fully
reflected the character of the Ural people – the people with a special tempering.
I’m sure that these qualities will help the administration and employees of the
Uraltransmash to manage the tasks of any difficulty. Keep going!
E. E. Rossel,
The Governor of Sverdlovsk region
Dear colleagues and friends!
In 2007 the Ural Transport Machine-Building works is turning 190.
Almost two centuries of history is a long way of search, successes,
achievements and difficulties of the turning points, as well as everyday and
every-hour creative activity of many generations. During all two centuries
the works’ history was closely interrelated with the city history, reflecting
the main stages of Ekaterinburg’s development.
The enterprise started from the Melkovskaya gold-washing factory
built in 1817 during Ekaterinburg’s “golden age”. It was just here, where a
talented mechanic P. E. Tate expanded his activity. He founded the
Ekaterinburg mechanical establishment, which was on the same level with
the best European samples by the middle of the 19th century. Ever since the
works’ production has been a symbol of the technical progress and latest
achievements in the industrial technologies. In the 19th century these were
the steam engines for the mining industry and first in the Urals and Siberia
steamships. In the 20th century – the equipment for the mining and oil and
gas industries as well as for the railway transport.
The turning point in the history of the Uraltransmash was undoubtedly
the Great Patriotic War. The defence order essentially corrected the works’
profile specialisation and required the creation of the own construction
base, adequate to fulfil the tasks of the military production. The legendary
self-propelled artillery guns developed at the enterprise don’t have and
have never had any equal analogues. From that period till the present day
the Ural Transport Machine-Building works is one of the main home
enterprises working on the improvement of our country’s defence strength.
The works had some very uneasy challenges on its shoulders during
the economic reforms on the edge of the 21st century. However, it
managed to survive as well as maintain its production capacity and mainly
its intellectual, technological and personnel potential. This is why today we
are sure that the Uraltransmash has not only the glorious past and worthy
present but also all the basics for a successful development in the future.
Looking back and measuring everything created by the workers,
engineering and constructing thought and talented managers’ efforts, I’m
not afraid to say: “We can everything!”.

XIX в.
В XIX в.

It is well‑known that machine‑building as an industrial sector originated in England. In the second half of the18th cen‑tury Britain became the so‑called “world’s workshop”. However, in 1786 the import of machines from England was pro‑hibited, so all the other states had no choice but to start producing their own machines. The Tsarist government sought for specialists eager to leave the smoky Albion and introduce the production of steam engines in Russia. The search didn’t take very long: in the same year of 1786 a group of specialists headed by engineer an Gascoin arrived to St. Petersburg1.
One of the Gascoin’s partners Joseph (in Russia he was called Osip) Major served in Siberia at the end of the 18th century. His first Ural product dates from 1803. At the works of merchant Knauf, Major made “different but quite sim‑ple man‑ and water‑driven machines for pumping water from mines”. In the following year Major built an already more complicated steam air‑blowing machine of 10 horse power capacity at the Yugovsky works. An academician Kraft described it in the “Technological Journal” in 1805. From 1806 onwards Major has been fulfilling the orders from Ural state‑owned works2.
In 1812 Major was officially taken to the state service at the post of the mechanic of Perm mining department. One of the contract terms was the right to build a factory near Ekaterinburg by his own means to produce “steam and other machines and implements for mining works”. It could be equipped with everything required from forges and cupolas to a steam engine. The required for this purpose small mill’s pond and the site near the village of Bolshoy Istok were bought at the state expense from the local merchant Cheryshev. An additional plot of forest was taken from the tract of woodland belonging to the Beryozovsky gold fields. All this was granted to Major’s “eternal and hereditary property”3.
In order to supply the works with manpower Major proposed to send him fifty state workers, the general conditions has been a practical activity and study with a gradual rotation during which the subjects leaving the works were replaced by the newly arrived ones. The closest assistants of the English mechanic were the mining engineer E. I. Danilov in 1813–1814 and mechanic I. Pankratov from 1815 onwards4.
Major was one of the first in the Urals to apply the advanced English (so‑called puddling) method of iron production. He pioneered the utilization of peat in metallurgical furnaces and actively popularized this method. In the spring of 1825 he even submitted a report about his successful experiments to the Department of Mining and Salt Affairs. However, it was only two years later in March 1827 when Ekaterinburg mining management sent its representatives to Major after a direct order from the capital. They watched how Englishman’s workers melted copper and iron with peat coke and heated metal in a smith’s hearth5.
There is another important fact. During the process of obtaining peat Major opened the gold fields and cleverly used this circumstance. In 1823 he built a mentioned in the description gold‑washing machine after his own design. Its capac‑ity was “to wash up to 200 poods of gold per hour using the force of four workers – even if the gold was only of the poor‑est quality”6.
The money earned from the sale of gold was immediately put into business. By the end of the 1820s Joseph Major’s mechanical establishment located near the village of Maly Istok (known by the locals as “Major’s squatting”) has become a large square block with an inner yard built of stone and wood after the model of Ekaterinburg “Gostiny Dvor”. Apart from all the production constructions it was also comprised of the ironmaster’s apartments including a home theatre as well as the subsidiary services, such as the stables, byre, hen‑house, storehouses. Together with his waterwheels Major used his own steam engine thus he no longer depended on the changes of the Ural climate with its alternating droughts. There was a school right next to the factory. The workers from all Ural state works were taught here; there would con‑stantly be approximately 30 subjects studied once. To avoid the possibility of a fire the saw‑mill was situated separately. All the required details were manufactured just at the place, with the only exception for the large‑size castings, such as iron cylinders which were ordered at other works just as they have always been. However, in case of a large order Major was ready to adapt to the production of these articles too7.
During 26 years of his activity in the Urals Major produced no less than 18 steam engines and founded two mechan‑ical establishments: his own large one and at Verkhne‑Irginsky works. In 1818 Major was awarded with a 4th‑class Saint Vladimir Order for his merits before the empire. It is quite possible that be the circumstances different, “Uraltransmash” would have originated from the Bolshoy Istok establishment, not from the factory on the Melkovka River. But the fortune made its deed: one night Joseph Major stayed in his laboratory late and was murdered on April 20, 1831. Two bandits were certainly looking for gold8. Unfortunately Major had no successor. The initiative was taken over by another dynasty also headed by a British subject P. E. Tate. He was the founder of two sources and two components of the future “Ural‑transmash”, i.e. the Ekaterinburg and Melkovskaya mechanical factories. In severe autumn of 1941 they were united giv‑
ing birth to the modern enterprise.

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE WAYAT THE BEGINNING OF THE WAYВ НАЧАЛЕ ПУТИВ НАЧАЛЕ ПУТИ
XVIII–XIX
There is always a pioneer and a leader in every busi-
ness. Regarding the Ural machine-building industry, it is the
federal state enterprise “Ural Factory of Transport Machine-
Building” (“Uraltransmash”) that plays such a role. Certainly,
there are and there’ve always been far larger and more glo-
rious enterprises, such as “the father of the works” Ural-
mach, the giant of Tagil “Ural Car-Making Works”, “Moto-
vilikha” of Perm. This list may be continued. However, the
history can’t be changed: it is the Uraltransmash that orig-
inated from the first machine-building works of the Urals.
It may be also mentioned that on the turn of the 18–19th
centuries many region’s metallurgical machine-building
works had their own mechanical shops or even small facto-
ries – for instance, Vyisky mechanical establishment of the
famous Tagil mechanics Cherepanovs. Many unique details
from rolling mills to locomotives were produced there. Nev-
ertheless, all analogous establishments were intended to sat-
isfy the works’ local needs and therefore didn’t have a long
history.
The specifically equipped “works for works” made their
first appearance in the 1830–1840s in Ekaterinburg. These
were the Ekaterinburg state works and Melkovsky private
mechanical factory. They became the base for the Uraltrans-
mash, which now justly possesses the title of the first and old-
est works in the Urals.

Tate came to the Russian service approximately in 1828–
1829. In the first half of the 1830s he was the head manager
of the Vsevolozhskys’ group of works. He was even awarded
with a Gold medal at that post in 1834. It could have very
possibly been this fact that in 1836 encouraged the state
department to invite Tate onto the post of a mechanic of the
Ural Mining Department with a considerable for the time sal-
ary of 2850 roubles paid with silver. Tate agreed and signed a
correspondent contract9.
In autumn of the same 1836 the first investigation of
the situation at the state works and mines made Tate come
to a conclusion that Ural mining works were poorly techni-
cally equipped everywhere – from the ore mining, iron melt-
ing and iron hammering sections to the production of guns
and shells as well as the area of washing the gold-containing
sands. In order to improve the situation he offered to arrange
his own mechanical establishment turning it into the centre
of training for skilled the machine-builders. The Mining Head
of the Ural Range V. A. Glinka supported this idea. By May
1837 the list of different machines that the establishment had
to produce in the following years was compiled10.
For two and a half years P. E. Tate together with an archi-
tect M. P. Malakhov have been designing the necessary docu-
mentation, general and private layouts of the houses, draw-
ings of the machines and equipment. A few various sites for
the future mechanical establishment were investigated at
the Nizhne-Isetsk and Uktuss works, Melkovsky gold-wash-
ing works and Ekaterinburg mint yard. The latter one was
selected11.
It should be mentioned that the Minis-
ter of Finance Kankrin did not greet Tate’s
offer. He considered that the new mechan-
ical factory as an educational establishment
was not required. According to his opinion,
the mining technical school at the Techno-
logical Institute in St. Petersburg sufficed for
this purpose. Kankrin thought that to pro-
duce the machines and their parts in Ekat-
erinburg for other works may be obstacled
by their transportation at large distances.
In view of these causes the Minister saw no
necessity to establish a new central mechanical factory in
Ekaterinburg. At the same time Kankrin normally did not
object to the purchase of machines from England. However,
no strict prohibition of building the factory followed. Unfor-
tunately, neither did the money for the construction of the
necessary shops12.
Thus, the construction began with a small machine
section at the Ekaterinburg mint yard in 1838. The Minis-
ter’s permission to convert it into a factory was obtained
in 1841. A complete set of cutting and metal-work-
ing implements together with the billets of foundry steel
were ordered in Zlatoust after an agreement with Colonel
P. P. Anosov had been made. In autumn of 1839 Tate went
to St.-Petersburg to buy five machine-tools at Technolog-
ical Institute and to order three machines at the Alexan-
drovsky foundry works13.
In 1841 P. Tate and a draftsman E. Niko-
nov were sent to England. Their trip resulted
in the collection of 50 sets of drawings
either obtained or personally made at
various British works. A list, constructed
two years after the trip, frequently men-
tioned the machines and furnaces
from Gax works in Newcastle. This
name will be numerously met fur-
ther on. However, the drawings of
the machines from much more
famous works-owners, such as
Wittworth, Nasmith, Watt, Fern-
burn and Stephen-
son were mentioned

even more often. Some drawings already had a footnote say-
ing “inculcated at the Ekaterinburg factory”14.
After P. Tate came back from Britain he focused his atten-
tion on the process which Major had no time to complete,
i.e. the introduction of peat as an industrial fuel. In Octo-
ber of 1843 he performed the trials of heating one of the
Beryozovsky fields’ steam boilers with peat. In January of 1844
a high-pressure steam engine sent from England was oper-
ated in the same manner. In the winter of 1844–1845 the
Ekaterinburg mechanical establishment was heated entirely
with peat, which proved to be 2.1 times cheaper than the fire-
wood method. Tate managed to shake the bureaucratic wall:
the Nizhne-Isetsk and Kamensky works started to use peat,
as well15.
Those specialists, who knew the “art of mechanics”
were sought for all over the state Urals. I. Busygin from
Bogoslovsky district was appointed as a senior master of
the metal-working shop. S. Kuznetsov, who recently arrived
from the capital to work at the Goroblagodatsky’s group
of works, became the head of the turning shop. The work-
ers were recruited from the Kushvinsky works and Zlatoust
armoury works. The local artisan E. Nikonov was a designer,
draftsman and Tate’s assistant for the production from 1837
onwards. His duties were to make all the plans given to the
shops with all the necessary calculations of the capacity
of steam engines, hydraulic wheels and so on. Apart from
this he was responsible for a proper fulfilment of the con-
structions in accordance with the confirmed drawings and
assembly of the various steam engines and other machines.
However, E. Nikonov was officially appointed as the man-
ager and senior draftsman of the mechanical establishment
as late as in 1850. In 1844 F. S. Knyazev, a graduate from the
technical school at Petersburg Technological Institute was
appointed “for working under the chief mechanic”. In 1848
he became the technical head of the machine-building pro-
duction16.
In 1844, i.e. six years after the foundation, P. Tate
approved the activity of the Ekaterinburg factory’s workers:
“Regarding the working class people it may be justly asserted
that although they didn’t have enough time to quite get the
skill which can be equally compared to that of workers at
the long-existed large-scale mechanical enterprises, we may
at least hope that their skill would indeed achieve its highest
perfection in a short time”17.
The results of a four-year activity testify to this. The first
products – the rolling and carving mills for the Nizhne-
Isetsk works and a large turning mill for the Beryozovsky
gold fields – were followed by seven steam engines only of
their own kind, the capacity of which varied from 8 to 40
horse powers18.
The most significant act in the history of the Ekaterin-
burg mechanical establishment was its participation in the
construction of iron ships for the Caspian Navy. In 1842
three ships of this kind were ordered in England. The total
sum including the delivery and assembly at the place proved
to be exclusively high and amounted to 72 thousand roubles
for each ship. Therefore at the end of 1844 the new produc-
tion was commissioned to the Ural state industry. The Kam-
sko-Votkinsky works (it had waterways to the Caspian Sea
through the rivers) was ordered to initiate the ship-build-
ing. Meanwhile the production of the most complicated
mechanisms was ordered to be fulfilled by the Ekaterinburg
mechanical establishment. P. Tate was one of the initiators of
such a labour division. The drawings and books he gathered
during his trip in 1842 became the first manuals for the ship-
building production19.
The program of preparation for the ship-building pro-
duction included numerous trips abroad, first and foremost
to the 19th-century world’s centre of this industry – England.
The conductors Khatuntsov, Zakharov and Maletinsky were
the first to travel with Tate’s instructions where and what to
watch. In the spring of 1846 P. E. Tate also went to his moth-
erland where “the ship-building industry was then flourish-
ing”. One of his duties was to find out the exact advantages

of the screw ships before the wheel-driven ones. Among the
numerous materials gathered during his trip Tate brought
back a complete set of drawings for an 80-horse power steam
engine ordered by him in Manchester from the works-owner
Fernburn20.
The new production necessitated a great amount of new
high-capacity equipment for both the mechanical establish-
ment and ship-building dock. Some machines were pro-
duced by the local forces and some were purchased in Eng-
land. The Ekaterinburg mechanical establishment got a large
planning mill and a screw-thread mechanism delivered from
Wittworth works in Manchester, a bore mill delivered from
Watt works in Birmingham and many other machines with-
out identified firms-producers. At home the machines were
also built after the British design, in particular after those
from Nasmith works21.
The new production also entailed an additional invitation
of the British specialists. In particular, an engineer-mechanic
Richard Jackson (he was responsible for the construction
and repair of the ships’ machines) and a mould-master Wil-
liam Leigh were the first to be recruited for the Ekaterinburg
mechanical establishment.
In 1850 another engineer-mechanic Wigzel arrived from
Greenwich. Apart from that two British smiths Guardskettle
and Johnson and a welder Willkinson also arrived there. The
contracts of all the foreign specialists contained not only an
agreement to their labour duties but also to a duty of train-
ing the local specialists. However, the local specialists were
also invited to the factory, when needed. Thus, the foundry
master of the Nizhny Tagil works Shcherbakov taught the
casting of copper articles including bushes for air pumps for
a steamship. This was not a single case – as early as in 1838
two workers from Ekaterinburg were sent to the private Sys-
ertsky works to “study the production of iron steam boil-
ers”22.
In 1853 Eustace Wigzel replaced Tate at the post of the
chief mechanic and head of the technical section of the Ekat-
erinburg mechanical establishment. The projects of 14-ton
lifting cranes for the mechanical establishment are particu-
larly known among his elaborations. After coming back to
his motherland Wigzel became the chief engineer at a well-
known ship-building works in Greenwich. In 1854 the Rus-
sian mining engineer A. A. Grammatchikov occupied the post
of the chief mechanic.
In 1851–1855 the mining engineer V. I. Rozhkov imple-
mented the duties of the assistant of the Head of Ekaterin-
burg mining works and the director of the Mint Yard together
with the mechanical establishment. He organized a produc-
tion of the water turbines there. In 1855 he designed and
built a turbine characterized by a double-action with a hor-
izontal roller. Further on Rozhkov’s turbines became wide-
spread all over the Urals23.

By the beginning of the 1850s the Ekaterinburg
mechanical establishment was hardly inferior to the best
European works in its technical equipment. The unique
system of a central hydraulic drive was doubled by a
70-horse power steam engine in case of the lack of water.
Up to 500 subjects were engaged in the six shops fulfilling
the orders of the state-owned and private works24. In 1859
the Ekaterinburg mechanical establishment was equipped
with 4 cupolas, 3 reverberatory furnaces, 2 steam ham-
mers, two 74-horse power steam engines, 3 waterwheels
and a turbine of a total capacity of 175 horse powers. Also
49 various machine-tools operated there. Within a works’
year (from May 1859 to May 1860) different works-owners
were supplied with 2 steam engines of 100 and 30 horse
powers, two steam long boats, 2 air blowers, 3 water tur-
bines, 5 implements for steam boilers, an air compressor,
and 14 machine-tools for various purposes, among them
two samples of a very complex design for the rifling guns’
barrels. At that time the rifling artillery for the Russian Army
was only at the project stage25.
After the Abolition of Serfdom in 1861 the Ural mining
industry entered the period of stagnation. This consequently
entailed the lack of orders for the Ekaterinburg mechanical
establishment, as well. At the end of the decade it produced
only the gun carriages, but even those orders were irregu-
lar. The activity was often stopped. The factory was often left
with nothing to do, as, for instance, in June-July of 1869. In
1870 the number of working days did not exceed 150. The
way out was the creation of a self-managing work artel con-
sisted of 87 workers. In 1871 the artel independently per-
formed the order for the gun carriages26.
In 1874 the establishment was eventually closed, but
only for several years. In 1878 the houses and the equip-
ment were transferred to the railway specialists for the
arrangement of a chief workshop of the Mining Railway,
which connected the western and eastern slopes of the
Ural Mountains. A railway to the Shartash station was laid
along the Pokrovsky Avenue (now the Malyshev Street). In
the Soviet times the workshops were converted into a car-
making works and had existed in such a state up to 1941.
Some constructions of the former Ekaterinburg mechanical
establishment have survived to this day, among them the
smith-boiler shop (built in 1865), the drawing office and
the mechanician’s bureau (1833), the metal-working and
assembling shops (1848). All of them are displayed in the
Historical Square27.

vate orders. However, their fulfillment at the Ekaterinburg
mechanical establishment was quite difficult. The orders
were registered through the department of the Head of
Ural mining works and were performed according to “the
remaining principle”. Sometimes unpleasant accidents did
happen, such as a refusal of the merchant Knauf from the
steam engine delivered to him in 1851. The engine proved
to be not new, but quite old and repaired. It turned out
that there was simply no time to execute the required
machine and the old one being at disposal was sent to the
merchant28.
It was certainly unprofitable to lose customers. This fact
necessitated Tate to think of his own small works. He rec-
ollected of the Melkovskaya gold-washing factory, which
was declined earlier in the course of selection a site for a
state-owned works. This place had its own “history”. Once,
as early as at the times of Vassily Tatishchev and Wilhelm
de Gennin, it was where a contractor Melkov was prepar-
ing the larch wood for the building of Ekaterinburg dam.
Since then the hitherto nameless river was called the Mel-
kovka River29.
Ninety years later two enterprising women (quite a rare
phenomenon for the time) – Alexandra Agte, a daughter of
an ober-berg-meister Adolf, and Natalia, a wife of the head of
the Mint Yard Nicolas Mundt – took a decision to arrange a
paper factory there. At their own means they purchased the
appropriate for a construction site on the Melkovka River. In
October 1813 they appealed to Emperor asking for the per-
mission to found “an establishment” with a dam and water-
driven mechanisms. The petition, as it was required, firstly
highlighted both the state and public profits as follows: “The
construction of this dam and the accumulation of water there
may also greatly help the maintenance of the local Ekaterin-
burg pond, the Mint Yard on its bank and some other produc-
tions… The distribution of the production of writing paper in
the region will decrease its price and will consequently result
in the total profit for the general public”30.
The permission was given and in the summer of 1814 the
dam was erected, while the construction of the factory’s building
went actively on. Unfortunately, a tragedy happened in autumn:
a worker has drowned, while washing two horses in the pond.
The investigation was delayed by various bureaucratic proce-
dures. The women could not stand the excessive communica-
tions with officials and refused to continue their undertaking31.
There is no evidence whether Mrs. Agte and Mrs. Mundt
or their husbands extracted gold near their dam or not. They
probably did not. The site was legally bought and since 1812
there has been a Senate’s ukase functioning in the Russian
Empire, according to which everyone who wanted to have
the right to mine precious metals could have it. A. Agte occu-
pied a significant post of the assistant of the Head of Ekater-
inburg mining works and himself headed the treasury, lab-
oratory, amalgamation production, mining schools, print
house and library32. He had enough influence to retain the
dam and the site either as his own property or as a property
of his daughter and her partner. In any case when in August
the gold fields were discovered on the Melkovka, the mark-
sheider of the mining department I. I. Kolobov offered to
buy the finished dam and to use it for the arrangement of
a gold-washing factory. Agte and Mundt at their turn will-

ingly sold their property. In fact, they were probably totally
satisfied, as they managed to return the whole capital they
spent earlier.
On September 8, 1817 I. I. Kolobov, architect M. P. Mal-
akhov and the dam’s manager N. I. Usoltsev were ordered to
study the dam and calculate the expenses of the new gold-
washing factory. In 1821 a special brick building was con-
structed after Malakhov’s design. It was “laid on a stone foun-
dation 15.5 sazhen long, 8 sazhen broad, the foundation was
of arshin and a quarter”. It housed different necessary mech-
anisms. The mining engineer A. S. Menshy was the first and
only head of the factory. At the beginning of the 1830s after
14 years of activity the sands had been exhausted and the fac-
tory was closed33.
So it was this abandoned site that P. Tate decided to rent
out. On October 30, 1843 he asked for the permission to
arrange there a mechanical establishment at the expense of
his own means. The Ural mining department granted Tate
the site on lease for 24 years from May 16, 1844. He had to
pay 30 roubles in silver every year. In 1844 the construction
activity started and by the autumn of next year the factory’s
building, a hydraulic system comprised of a dam, a sluice, the
water pipe-line leading to a waterwheel and a drain as well as
the proprietor’s house were completed34.
However, this construction had led Tate to quite an
unpleasant situation, since heading simultaneously state-
owned and private factories meant breaking the laws of
Russian Empire. To make the true case answer the law Tate
invited his relatives from England – P. Gax and G. Gullet – and
gave them the Melkovsky establishment on lease. However,
the situation still remained to be dual, which was testified by
the following case: in 1852 an inspector of the Nizhny Tagil
works Beccker saw British clinching and flanging machines
during his visit to the Ekaterinburg mechanical establishment
and wished to order the identical ones. P. Tate agreed to pro-
duce and even to improve them according to the customer’s
desire but at his own factory at the cost of 5000 roubles in sil-
ver. In the spring of 1853 both machines were sent to Nizhny
Tagil. As a result Tate eventually had to leave the state service
in 1853. Soon he went away from Russia, leaving the factory
to his relatives-leaseholders.35.
Already at the very beginning of its functioning in 1847,
there were fifty subjects engaged at the Melkovskaya factory.
This number was quite considerable in view of the fact that
at that time any establishment with 16 workers equipped
with a steam engine or with 30 workers without a steam
engine was called “a works”. The first considerable pro-
ductions that P. Tate performed were those he complited
together with his brother Edward. At his own time the lat-
ter replaced his brother as a mechanic at the Vsevolozhskys
works after Peter left for the state service. There Edward dis-
tinguished himself in 1838 – he completed an earlier started
construction of a locomotive, for which was awarded a Gold
medal of Petersburg industrial exhibition in 1839. In 1847
in Perm Edward built one of the first on the Kama River
steam tugs of 40 horse power capacity and named it “Two
Brothers”. This was followed by the construction of three
more powerful tugs – “Perm”, “Ekaterinburg” and “The
Urals” equipped with 60-horse power steam engines. All the
engines for tugs were assembled at the Melkovskaya fac-
tory. In 1865 already 300 subjects were obvioysly engaged at
E. Tate’s shipbuilding factory. By the end of the 1870s four-
teen steamships were launched fulfilling the orders from all
over the Volga basin36.
During 16 years, from 1845 to 1861, thirty five steam
engines and a great amount of varied production equip-
ment were produced at the Melkovskaya mechanical fac-
tory. Only in 1859 229 workers assembled 9 steam engines
and two boilers for the total sum of 134.5 thousand rou-
bles. Among them there were engines of a new design
(without balances) for the steamships “Nakhimov” (80 HP
capacity), “Two Nicolas” (100 HP), “Irtysh” (80 HP) and
“Tobolsk” (80 HP). Five more high-pressure machines were
at the stage of completion at that time. Their designer Hec-
tor Gullet even published an article about the establish-
ment’s activity in Petersburg journal “Morskoi Sbornik”
(“Marine Collection”). Now even the state-owned Ekaterin-
burg mechanical establishment was eager to give orders to
the Melkovskaya factory37.
At the end of the 1860s the term of lease for the Mel-
kovskaya factory determined in 1844 was expiring. P. Tate
had to return to Russia despite his old age and made attempts
to save his property. Today it is difficult to determine what
means and ties the Englishman used but he succeeded in
his acts. The plot of land on which the factory was situated
was sold to him at the cost of 600 roubles. This gave him the
opportunity to leave the business with a considerable profit
and to come back to his motherland. On September 4, 1872
the Melkovskaya mechanical factory was transferred to Tate’s
country-mate and according to some witness even his rela-
tive Gasper Yates38.

FOMA (THOMAS) YATESGasper or Egor as he was called in Russia, Yates
arrived to Russia for a contract. Initially he served in the
vicinity of Petersburg at the ship-building works in Kol-
pino, later he was transferred to Kamsko-Votkinsk min-
ing works, which also produced ships. Then the desire
to “have his own business” had led him to Nizhny Sergi.
Gasper and his sons rented a small mechanical fac-
tory there as well as a paper factory at the neighbour-
ing Mikhailovsky works. Both of them were located on
the lands of Serginsko-Ufaleisky mining district. Apart
from the local works’ needs the mechanical factory also
performed outer orders, for example for Perm cannon
works. However, the products’ quality was rather poor.
A well-known mining official V. P. Bezobrazov accused
Gasper Yates himself of this: “The factory’s leaseholder is
not an experienced mechanic and all his projects were a
mere imitation of the drawings of machines, which con-
sequently led the majority of the factory’s operations to
turn out rather badly and the built machines were either
not durable because of an improper location of their
parts or unprofitable in operation of the steam engines…
Yates is definitely not a specialist in a field of production
of the steam engines and other machines, his specializa-
tion is a paper-making factory”39.
This opinion is hardly totally adequate and just. Yates had
certainly accumulated a considerable production experience,
although he indeed could have been an unskilled designer.
However, there was one more considerable circumstance: it
was next to impossible to establish a highly skilled collec-
tive of machine-builders entirely devoted to their mechani-
cal art within such a moderate period of time in patriarchal
Nizhny Sergi with its ancient-Ural mode of life with obliga-
tory ploughs and kitchen-gardens, stopping the works’ oper-
ation for a hay season and so on.
At the same time such a large city as Ekaterinburg was
capable of giving this opportunity to any educated indus-
trialist, which was proved by the elder Gasper’s sons, first
and foremost by Thomas (Foma in the Russian manner)
Yates. It was him who after his father’s death in 1875
headed the “Administration of all Yates’ business” includ-
ing the situation at the Melkovskaya factory. Meanwhile,
this name remained only in the past, because now both
the city and the world knew only of “Yates’ works”. He
quickly restored and re-equipped the abandoned shops
with new machine-tools and burst into the Ural mar-
ket. In order to be well-aware of the latest achievements
in the world machine-building and to produce only the
modern machines an agency “Siberia” was established. It
represented the American and other foreign countries’
machine-building firms. He headed the agency together
with his brother Friedrich40.
Yates’ works did not limit itself with a strict assort-
ment of products. It produced steam engines, machine-
tools as well as the equipment for mills. In the majority
of cases Yates personally performed chief assembly and
presented a completely finished machine to a customer.
This was the case of the construction and setting of the
first in the Urals large milling machine of the merchant
and town’s head I. I. Simanov in Ekaterinburg near the
bridge above the Iset River. The works’ gold fields pur-
chased a considerable number of machines. The small Sil-
ver medal from the Department of Mining and Salt Affairs
was the first official assessment of Yates’s successes and
achievements. The medal was awarded at the Siberian-
Ural industrial exhibition in 1887 for “a thorough pro-
duction of a steam engine and a more-than-ten-year use-
ful activity”. The small steam engine displayed there to
the visitors’ and especially their children’s joy was oper-
ated for a several hours every day driving the model of a
gold-washing machine. Once a week the gold was pub-
licly taken from the cradles, as well. Foma Yates was even
selected as a member of the exhibition commission. He
also entered the Ural Society for the Lovers of Natural Sci-
ences (UOLE)41.
The machine-building works became the technolog-
ical base of a multi-branch economy of the Yates broth-
ers. It rendered assistance in creating the mechanical and
foundry establishment of brother Theodor, a brewery of
brother Basil as well as Chelyabinsk gold fields of brother
Thomas. The works produced all the necessary equipment
for the “Siberian paper factory” built in 1880 in Kuriy by
Basil. In 1844 a new set of machines was assembled for
the burnt Ural paper factory leased by brother John in
Mikhailovsk. It should be noted that the Yates brothers’
paper factories literally dominated in the section “paper-
making business” at the Ural-Siberian industrial exhibition
held in 1887. The fact that the exhibition’s catalogue was
printed on the British entrepreneurs’ paper emphasized
their status42.

In 1896 the quality of the machinery and turbines
produced by the Yates dynasty was acknowledged all over
Russia, the works itself entered the list of the eight best
machine-building enterprises of the country. However, the
old Melkovka site lacked sufficient space. Already in 1877
the Yates made an unsuccessful attempt to buy the state-
owned Nizhne-Isetsk works.
Only in 1892 they became the co-proprietors of
Zhabynsky works in Tyumen and thus acquired a ship-
building base. At the end of the century the situation
became acute. The means accumulated over the years of
their activity were spent on the first serious reconstruc-
tion: the works grew in height after the American pat-
tern. The three-storey building of the mechanical shop
was erected. The second floor housed the mould work-
shop, the first floor – small machine-tools, the ground
floor was occupied by the heavy machinery for the pro-
duction of large-size articles. At the same time the brick
copper- and iron-casting shops as well as a fireroom were
built. Only the boilers’ shop and subsidiary constructions
remained wooden. After the reconstruction all the shops
were lighted with electricity by two dynamo-machines,
which also drove two small machine-tools.
The large ones were driven by three steam engines of
local production. These machine-tools were capable of
processing flywheels and sheaves up to 6.5 m in diameter
and 33 tons in weight, boring cylinders up to 2.7 m, plant-
ing the surfaces to 9 m long and 1.5 m broad, cutting gears
up to 2 m in diameter. Altogether by 1902 the number of
machine-tools increased to 100. All this gave an opportu-
nity to produce the large-size machines, such as the gold-
washing floating drags being in considerable demand in the
Ural market43.
Now Yates’ works could undoubtedly perform any order.
Twenty two steam engines, 31 boilers, 6 air blowers, 11 steam
hammers as well as lifting and bridge cranes, crushers, run-
ners, rolling and wire-drawing mills, drags and units for
steamships were included into the list of the most important
products only for 1902 alone. In 1907 a bridge crane of local
design driven by a steam engine was installed in the iron-
casting shop. However, the founders, boiler operators and
smiths still went on to make a lot of heavy manual opera-
tions. The number of workers increased from 80 subjects in
1880 to 350 in the early 20th century44.
In the early 20th century Russian Empire was paralyzed
by a severe economic crisis followed later on by a long-last-
ing period of stagnation. Only in the 1910s a new industrial
rise started to commence. Nevertheless, all these changes
had almost no impact on Yates’ works. It continued to
increase its rates and employ new workers. Their total num-
ber reached 600 subjects, so the works’ operation in two
shifts had to be introduced. In order to attract investors and
concentrate the capital the “Administration for the affairs
of Yates’ machine-building, ship-building, boilers, iron and

copper works” was established on June 1, 1903. A new build-
ing of the joiner shop was built and the mechanical shop
burnt in 1910 was restored into a two-storey building45.
In 1915 the “Zauralsky krai” newspaper advertised the
products of Yates works. The not-full list of output made
within the last decade showed that the works had produced
1223 articles, mainly for the state-owned (to be more pre-
cise, armoury) works of Zlatoust, Goroblagodatsky and Perm
districts as well as for the Zlokazovs shell works in Ekaterin-
burg. However, the parallel orders from the civil sectors were
also performed. The machinery was supplied to the mills, oil-
mills, saw-mills, tanneries and textile factories of the Urals
and Siberia. Ship-building also flourished. The first ships were
built in 1892. These were the freight-passenger “Okhotnik”
and the tug-boat “Stradalets”. In the same year the “Arseny”
steamship launched in 1876 was modernized. Later on, due
to the assistance of the technical office of brother Friedrich
two diesel engines were imported. They allowed the initia-
tion of the production of fast motor boats. In 1907 the offi-
cial steamship “Turinsk” of 300 HP was launched for the
Tyumen steamship line; in 1910 the steamship “Otets” was
launched for the Irtysh steamship line. Later on another tug-
boat “Syn” was built. Thus by 1917 together with the works
of Pirson and Gullet the Yates Tyumen ship-building dock
had launched practically a third of all the steam fleet of the
Ob-Irtysh basin46.
It should be noted that the high quality of Yates’ works’
steam engines encouraged the other ship-builders to buy
them. Thus in 1912 a large order for the steamships of “The
Amur” type was performed. The metal quality played a sig-
nificant role there. Since the 1870s Yates, probably being the
first in the world, used alloyed manganese boiler steel melted
in the open-hearth furnaces of the Demidovs’ Nizhny Tagil
works famous for the quality of its products47.
However, there was one even more important cause of
Thomas Yates’ works’ fame. This was a very prudent staff
policy. The relations of the works-owner with his engineers
and workers essentially exceeded the bounds of a com-
mon “capitalistic” rationalism. He never had national prej-
udices in employing the engineering and technical person-
nel. Foreigners always worked in his administration, among
them Makferson, Wardroper, Elson and others. However,
in the course of perfecting their skills the local specialists
like brothers Andrei, Ivan and Nikita Pimenovs, I. D. Fro-
lov, P. F. Yuryev worked together with foreigners or even
replaced them. Russian specialist P. Ya. Zuyev was appointed
to the newly established post of the chief designer. Later on
an engineer N. P. Kuznetsov replaced him. The latter had
attracted Yates’ attention as a skilled draftsman. The works-
owner sent the gifted young man to the Riga Polytechnic
Institute and after he successfully graduated he was given
every opportunity for his further professional rise, i. e. a
serious occupation, a possibility to travel over the world

Ефим Мялицын в 1902 г. имел около 100 выходных дней;
Однако неизменной ценностью всегда остается хлеб;

and study the best foreign achievements in the machine-
building sector. In 1912 the mining engineer I. I. Tibo-Bri-
gnol headed the works’ administration. Despite his name
inherited from the French fore-fathers he was a typical rep-
resentative of the Russian engineer school48.
Th. Yates’s treatment of skilled workers was described
in every detail by a well-known at the “Uraltransmash”
engineer and leader V. V. Seifert: “According to the mem-
oirs of the works-owner’s contemporaries Thomas Yates
loved the works’ craftsmen called at that time “the first-
hand masters”. In the majority of cases these were the
strong dumpy beard men with mighty hands dirty of soot
and sulky faces. They seemed to have grown into the
works. Later on, in the first years of the Soviet power the
image of Yates’ beard smith was selected as the prototype
of the Ural worker for the cover of the regional “Tova-
rishch Terenty” journal”49.
The worker’s monthly salary at Yates’ works was far
higher than that at the mining works. In the early 20th cen-
tury it fluctuated from 30 to 40 roubles with quite a mod-
erate working schedule. Below there are some figures cited.
For example, the boiler operator Yefim Myalitsyn had about
100 days off in 1902; two weeks he worked on the average
for 10–11 hours, the rest – for 8 and lesser hours. His sal-
ary for a year was 443 roubles 63 kopecks. Turners’ average
salary was 440 roubles. Was it much or little? It is rather dif-
ficult to compare these estimates with the modern period,
since many today commodities simply did not exist at that
time. However, there is a constant value – bread. All the
other food’s prices to a certain extent depend on its cost.
In 1900 a pood of rye flour cost 52 kopecks in the Urals,
800 g of bread (two pounds) cost circa 2 kopecks50. Mak-
ing calculations it may be inferred that the Yates salary in
“bread” equivalent corresponds to 15–20 thousand of mod-
ern roubles.
However, any serious affair could not simply be
expressed in monetary terms only. Yates was directed by
a severe Suvorov’s principle: “Any soldier must know his
manoeuvre”. Having received an order to produce a com-
plex and expensive machine he gathered the workers and
started his speech with the words: “We’ve got an order”. It
seemed that he was not a proprietor and the men sitting
before him were not employees but the share-holders at
the very least. Then Yates always enumerated all the things
they had to do and what profits they would have and said
the average salary of every worker. The completion of a job
was celebrated with a picnic on the open-air somewhere
in the country-side. It’s costs were at the expense of the
derived income. At the same time the works-owner person-
ally hired and discharged the workers and pitilessly expelled
the guilty ones51.
Developing the workers’ initiative Yates was well-aware
of its consequences. At his factory a worker was easily able to
read a drawing or a newspaper but he necessarily took part
in strikes, “mayovkas” and some other revolutionary actions.
The history of the revolutionary movement is beyond the
bounds of our research but the important feature should be
noticed: in case of a conflict Yates always sought for compro-
mises and did not hurry to call the police or Kazaks. More-
over, he was among the industrialists who appealed to the
government for the permission of peaceful strikes, meetings
and trade unions52.
So, the attempts to introduce a working control in the
spring of 1917 and especially the enterprise’s nationalization

after the October revolution proved to be even more unex-
pected for him. Th. Yates decided to return to England having
lived all his life in Russia. He warmly parted with the work-
ers, he was grateful for their labour and even rewarded them
with valuable gold rather than devaluated papers. Suddenly
the Kolchak army came and with it returned the hope for
the restoration of the common things. Unfortunately this did
not last long.
In the summer of 1919 before the Red Army came and
Yates made an attempt to carry away at least the most valu-
able equipment, but he could only get two railway cars and
even this attempt failed. Some machines were cheaply sold,
some of them were simply left along the endless Trans-Sibe-
rian trunk line. Despite all the difficulties Yates reached his
motherland, but tragically died under the wheels of an omni-
bus in the same 191953. This was the case of a usual “planned”
accident: a person who had lost the business of his life died
as if unexpectedly.
Meanwhile the steam engines with a trademark “Th.
Yates – Ekaterinburg” went on driving the ships with the
soviet flag over the seas and rivers for several decades.
Some of the ships of the Tyumen branch also lived for a
long time. For example the tug ships “Smychok” (the for-
mer “Svyatoi klyuch”) and “Syn” served up to the 1940s.
The steamship “Father” was serving for more than half a
century54.

THE YEARS OF STALIN’S FIVE‑YEAR PLANSThe established in January 1918 “Business committee
of workers’ self-governing” failed to improve the produc-
tion process over the relatively short peaceful period from
nationalization to Kolchak’s attack. There was no money for
salaries, the specialists opposing the fool orders were imme-
diately removed from the leading posts. However, firstly and
foremostly the entire paralysis of the industry left the works
without any customers, able to pay55.
In the summer of 1919 after Kolchak’s army left and the
decision of the works’ nationalization, taken a while ago, was
not any more opposed. “The business committee” was re-estab-
lished. It consisted of three men – an engineer N. P. Kuznetsov,
a master I. P. Pimenov and an administrator, a former sailor
S. I. Tarasov-Rodionov. At least two of them were well-aware
and experienced men. However, the committee did not exist
for long. The new heads of the country finally apprehended
the profit of having a single power in the production. An engi-
neer P. A. Ladyzhensky, a son of a well-known Ural geologist,
became the first Soviet head of Yates works56.
The enterprise was not essentially affected by the battles
and the lack of power. The industrial-technological map of
Ekaterinburg industrial trust from 1920 contains the follow-
ing description of the works: “The Machine-building and iron
works (the former Yates works) is located within the town, the
number of the workers is 322, the number of employees is 39.
Among them there are 306 male subjects, 16 female subjects,
42 teenagers. Its main productions are mechanical, foundry,
boiler-making and partially the smith’s work with the subsid-
iary shops (mould, building-yard shops, steam station, electric
power station). According to a new revaluation all the works’
immovable property is appreciated as 186 thousand 667 pre-
war roubles (according to a pre-revolutionary inventory it was
194 thousand 737 roubles)”. The main value of the enterprise
consisted of 93 machine-tools (though 78 of them were worn
to 60 %), two steam engines, two cupolas and other machin-
ery located in a two-storey mechanical shop (600 square m), a
boiler shop (360 square m), a assembly shop (150 square m), a
foundry shop (70 square m), a mould shop (65 square m). The
smith’s shop, machine section and steam boiler’s room occupied
the total area of another 150 square m. The scenery was supple-
mented by the brick two-storey building of the works’ adminis-
tration, wooden school and ambulatory clinic, a fire-room and
some other auxiliary constructions57.
The description witnesses that the works had lost almost
half of its workers. The majority of them had rescued from
starvation in the countryside. The raw materials and fuel were
lacking and there were no chances to find them anywhere
under the conditions of a complete disruption. The continu-
ing experiments to establish an equal payment, the attempt
to liquidate money circuit and to reconstruct the organiza-
tion of labour after the military pattern (the works was even
called “the shock battalion”)58 contradicted Yates’s traditions
and moreover killed the desire to work altogether.
The declaration of a new economic policy with a par-
tial rehabilitation of a private capital gave an impetus to
the growth of agriculture and the sector of consumer ser-
vices. The industrial enterprises retained under the state’s
authority. The workers formally being the country’s pro-
prietors were in fact severely treated. The average monthly
salary at Ekaterinburg works in terms of its true purchase
capacity in February 1922 corresponded to 2 roubles
95 kopecks from the level of 1913. By October it had risen
to 3.37 roubles59. At Yates’s times some workers earned
such money within a day, the others within 1.5–5 work-
ing shifts.
Nevertheless, by the beginning of 1921 the works was one
of the first in the city to start operating and immediately turned
into the centre of rehabilitation of the region’s national econ-
omy. Due to its assistance the city electric power station and
Verkh-Isetsky metallurgical works were set up. The unique skills
and experience of Yates’s workers, who were able to make or
repair any machine, were used to serve the Soviet power. There
are a lot of illustrations. The mechanic I. P. Pimenov found the
way to restore the exploded by Kolchak’s army crankshaft
weighing 6.5 tons by means of a powerful steam engine from
the gold fields. The head of the foundry shop A. P. Pimenov
had adopted the technology of pouring bronze into a mould.
The works started to receive orders from everywhere, since the
machinery was urgently needed at the electric power stations
and flour mills, metallurgical works and railways. The old ship-
building branch was also not forgotten. In 1922 the steamship
“Metallist” ran over the Ekaterinburg pond. It was designed by
a graduate from the pre-revolutionary women’s polytechnic
courses V. A. Shiryayeva. In 1924 the works made a steam boiler

of an unusual design with two hearths weighing more than 10
tons for a large sea steamship “Spokoiny”. At the same time a
large 4.2 m in diameter flywheel for a rolling mill of Verkhne-
Ufaleisky works was executed. Its parts were separately cast
and then assembled with a unique precision60.
At the end of the 1920s the “Metallist” works together with
its closest “relative” Voyevodin car-making works became the
production base for the program of the region’s industrializa-
tion. They supplied with the machinery and equipment not only
for the nearly initiated “Uralmashstroi” but also for other new
constructions, the giants of the Urals and Siberia. Within Sep-
tember of 1930 only the “Metallist” sent 217 tons of products
to the UZTM; 56.1 tons to Magnitogorsk; 75.4 tons to Kuznetsk;
56.5 tons to Gubakha; 102.4 tons to Kemerovo. However, the
works itself was not actually reconstructed and had no state
support of any kind. The numerous bureaucratic integrations
and disintegrations could hardly be regarded as help. In 1922
the works “Stalkan” producing steel cables was introduced into
the enterprise’s composition. In 1924 the absurdity of joining
such opposite productions became apparent. “Stalkan” became
independent again. In 1928 “The Metallist” Association of state
machine-building works” comprised of several enterprises was
established on the base of the “Metallist” works. Meanwhile the
equipment, production buildings and constructions became
more and more outdated. The works was loosing its signifi-
cance. By the beginning of the 1930s it was implied to convert
the works into a repair workshop61.
Only the personal interference of people’s commissar for
iron-and-steel industry S. Ordzhonikidze together with the sup-
port of regional press allowed the enterprise to be preserved.
“The Uralsky rabochy” newspaper highlighted that “… the
personnel educated at the works and the experience in the
production of complex earlier imported from abroad mech-
anisms allowed to expand the production process, gave the
opportunity (to talk) of a large-scale reconstruction in order
to finally fix the works’ position of a large machine-building
base of the iron industry”. In 1932 a great reconstruction activ-
ity of “The Metallist” commenced. In order to locate the new
shops a pond and a bog were dried and a number of dwell-
ing houses were destroyed, since the right of a private prop-
erty has then meant nothing. Within a short period of time
the modern buildings of the foundry, smith’s and mechanical-
assembly shops as well as the new buildings of a steam-boiler
room, substation and the works’ administration were erected.
On the turn of 1933–1934 they were equipped with the new
machinery and were put into exploitation one after another.
The ancient constructions were given to the repair services62.
Since 1934 the rehabilitated “Metallist” became the chief
supplier of equipment for the mining enterprises of the “Vostok-
ruda” trust. The output had increased 5 times after the recon-
struction and the number of workers had reached a thousand
not counting the section of the capital construction. The works
had adopted the production of earlier imported from abroad
articles, such as bore machines, separators for a wet magnet
concentration of iron ore, chisel-filling machines and so on. In
1936 a new change of nomenclature took place and the enter-
prise was transferred under the direction of “Glavneftemash”.
Now it had to supply the oil industry of the Povolzhye area, “the
second Baku”, with the latest machinery. These were the very
serious orders: complex machines, such as bore machines for
percussion and rotary boring of holes to the depth up to 500
m, deep-operating pumps for lifting oil from 1 km depth, oil
pumps, tractor and automobile windlasses and later on even the
derricks. The first ones up to 41 m high were supplied to three

trusts “Prikamneft”, “Ishimbaineft” and “Elbaneft”. in 1941. A
bit earlier, in 1939 the production of defense products like cast
shells of aviation bombs and mortars was adopted, as well63.
By the end of the 1930s “The Metallist” was quite a mod-
ern and successive machine-building enterprise. However, the
status of the technological, intellectual leader of the sector
eastward the Volga that Yates works had merited in the early
20th century had to a considerable degree been lost. It wasn’t
even because of the appearance of the new large enterprises –
the so-called works-giants. The cause was that the latter were
slowly but persistently increasing the science-technological
potential while “The Metallist” had, in reverse, lost it.
During the 1930s the new constructions attracted the best
engineers and the most skilled workers. Meanwhile, at “The
Metallist” the number of workers of the Yates school decreased.
There were several reasons for that. Firstly, there was the fac-
tor of time – people became old and retired. Others were trans-
ferred to the new works to adopt and start the latest production
processes at the most modern enterprises. There was also the
third variant of losses. Yates, as it was already mentioned, had
no prejudices concerning the origin and the political position of
his workers, as talent and craftsmanship were what he valued.
However, for the new ideologically restricted power these attri-
butes were at the end of the scale of values. On March 2, 1926
the works’ head P. A. Ladyzhensky at the party meeting stated
“the weakness of the technical personnel” as one of the causes
of a low labour productivity. According to his opinion it con-
sisted of “the former officers of the White Army who are used
to command not work”. Approximately a year later Ladyzhen-
sky became “the former” himself. V. S. Bayanov replaced him
and became the first “red” head. He was an excellent turner, but
he obviously failed to direct the whole works64.
The hunting for the “enemies” firstly among “the for-
mer” persons and then everywhere else became a covert and
overt refrain of many staff decisions in the second half of the
1920s and throughout the whole of the 1930s. The fates of
the repressed workers and engineers of “The Metallist” were
dwelt upon in the book by S. L. Beryozovskaya and V. V. Dubly-
onnykh “At the Sharp Curves of History”. These tragic stories
should not be repeated now. It should only be noted that
the individual initiative of a master became yet another vic-
tim of the gloomy atmosphere. This was the trait for which
capitalist Yates was ready to resign himself to strikes and
trade unions. Evidently the last manifestation of the workers’
opposition was the unauthorized meeting held on March 10,
1928 caused by the reduction of professional classes and the
following decrease in salaries65. Obedience went to the first
place and was the one and only merit. It didn’t matter where
it was shown, whether in the struggle against “the people’s
enemies” or the struggle for “the completion of a five-year
plan ahead a schedule”. The enactment of Presidium of the
USSR Supreme Soviet from June 29, 1940 on “The transition
to an eight-hour working day, seven-day working week and
prohibition of an unauthorized dismissal of the workers and
employees from enterprises and institutions” was a reason-
able outcome of the process of turning a worker into a serf.
In accordance with this “ukaz” an unauthorized transfer to
another place of work was treated as a crime66.
A strong shock therapy, a crushing blow over the shaped
world picture and stable traditions was indeed required in
order for the people to re-start feeling the responsibility for
the their own fates, as well as for the fate of the works and of
the whole country. Unfortunately, the history of our country
in the 20th century was too generous for such shocks.
