Well, summer is finally here and the country’s thoughts are turning towards the Summer Olympics.
We are lucky to be in such close proximity to
one of the 2012 Olympic Venues with
Hadleigh farm playing host to the Mountain
Biking events on the 11th and 12th August.
The venue is expecting over 20,000 visitors
over the 2 days! Our Olympic article on page 6
looks at the history of some of the symbols
associated with the Olympic Games.
If you have a business based in the local area
or serving local residents, Your Canvey and
Your Benfleet & Hadleigh magazines both
offer an affordable and effective way to
advertise. We have been publishing our quality
magazines for 5 years in July so we are here to
stay! We find that many local residents keep
hold of their magazine and use it as a useful
reference guide to the area. To keep our
advertising costs as low as possible, we deliver
to half of the area one month and the other half
the next. We can also include your own leaflets
with our magazines if you prefer.

website at www.yourlocalmags.co.uk or for

The Olympic Games
Excitement is really beginning to build now in the run up to the 2012 Olympics. The Summer Olympic Games will be held in London from 27th July to 12th August 29th August to 9th September. There are many symbols of the games and here is a brief look at their origins.
The Rings
The Olympic Rings are five interlocking rings
that stand for the five continents - Africa,
America, Asia, Australia and Europe and the
athletes from around the world. The colours of
the rings are blue, yellow, black, green, and
red respectively. They were chosen because at
least one of these colours is found on the flag
of every nation.
The symbol was originally designed in 1912
by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of
the modern Olympic Games and was first used
at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics.
The Flag
On the Olympic flag, the rings appear on a
white background. At the Olympic Games, the
flag is brought into the stadium during the
opening ceremony. After its arrival, the flag is
hoisted up the flagpole and it must fly in the
stadium during the whole of the Games. When
the flag is lowered at the closing ceremony, it
signals the end of the Games.
Motto
The motto of the Olympic Games is “Swifter,
Higher, Stronger.” These three words
encourage the athlete to give his or her best
during competition and to view this effort as a
victory in itself. In other words, the most
important thing is not to win but to take part!
The Flame
The Olympic flame is one of the best-known
features of the Games. From the moment the
flame is lit to the moment it goes out, a very
precise ritual is laid down :
The lighting: In memory of the Olympic
Games’ origins, the flame is lit in Olympia,
Greece, some months before the opening of
the Games.
The relay route: The torch is carried by relay
from Olympia to the host city of the Games.
Arrival at the stadium: The day of the
opening of the Games, the flame enters the
stadium. With the lighting of the cauldron by
the last relay runner the flame is transferred
from the torch to the place where it will
continue to burn for the entire length of the
Games. The flame is extinguished on the final
day of the Games at the closing ceremony.
Mascots
Since the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble,
France, the Olympic Games have had a
mascot, usually an animal native to the area
or occasionally human figures representing
the cultural heritage. The first major mascot
in the Olympic Games was in the 1980
Summer Olympics in Moscow. Nowadays,
most of the merchandise aimed at young
people focuses on the mascots, rather than the
Olympic flag or organization logos.

Local History
Daws Heath was named after Philip Dawe who held land there in the late 13th century. This was a patch of heath and scrub entirely encircled by woods.
During the mid-late 19th century, Daws
Heath, a remote and forbidding place was
the haunt of smugglers and thieves. It’s
proximity to Hadleigh, the fishing port of
Leigh-on-Sea and the creek between
mainland Canvey Island offered a good
landing spot for smugglers who would
recover their contraband at the foot of the
hill below Hadleigh Castle, take the goods
up Castle Lane and through Hadleigh
Village and beyond to the wild wastes of
Daws Heath.
Centuries before this, a thriving woodland
industry had been in action. We know today
of woods such as Pound Wood. The wood
charcoal produced was noted for it’s quality
and was used in the manufacture of
gunpowder. Great cartloads would have been
conveyed by horse-drawn carriage to
London and there is evidence that this usage
of woodland resource dates from the Tudor
period.
Church life in Daws Heath
originated with The Peculiar
People movement. It was founded
in 1837-8 by James Banyard from
Rochford. He was a drunkard who
converted to religion as a
Wesleyan and went on to found
the movement. The Peculiar
People - a sect - was principally
confined to membership in Essex
and with Daws Heath found to be
of “evil repute” as mentioned
earlier, the missionary zeal and
industry of these people transformed it into
one of the most prosperous agricultural
communities in the county.
Several suicides occurred in Daws Heath and
these sorry individuals and vagrants, without
religion or family, were not allowed to
receive a Christian burial. It is said that
several such people are buried in the triangle
in the road outside St Michael’s Church with
another such site being at the junction of
Daws Heath Road and Western Road. This
folklore has been supported by local
residents over many years who have also
reported several ghostly sightings.
The road called Sherry Way was once a
slaughter house for pigs and at one time,
residents dug up bones and mistakenly
thought they were human.

Two local authors, Gill Mckinlay and Lorraine Coverley have been selected to contribute to a new short story website.
Revolutionising the publication of short
stories for the internet age, publisher Alfie
Dog Limited has, through its internet site
www.alfiedog.com, brought together quality
stories from current writers across the globe.
Unlike other sites offering short stories
www.alfiedog.com carries three different
formats of every story so that readers can use
whichever e-reader they have, or print the
story out to be read in the traditional fashion.
With new stories being added every week,
the publishers hope that once a reader is
‘hooked’ they will be happy to come back
for more, knowing they can find a reliable,
good quality read.
The site carries a wide range of stories and
Managing Director of the site, Rosemary
Kind, hopes that it will appeal to readers
with a variety of tastes. Even parents looking
for a new bedtime story to read to young
children can find something suitable.

Natural help for Migraine and Headaches
Summer’s here at last! I hope you’re well and enjoying life and it’s still sunny when you read this after a very long winter.
Recently I’ve had a lot of clients suffering
from migraine and headaches looking for
help. Last year I was asked to speak at a
migraine conference. I was there to
demonstrate Bowen Technique and
Reflexology and how they can be of help to
migraine sufferers. Excitingly research
projects on both Bowen and reflexology
found in just a few treatments, migraines
could be reduced or sometimes even
eliminated, something I’ve seen in my own
practice.
Migraine affects one in ten of us at some
time and the people at the conference told
me of migraines that lasted 72 hours and
were so painful that they couldn’t even sleep
during that time. Sometimes they seem to
be triggered by something in your
environment such as lighting, the
atmosphere before a thunderstorm, even a
particular odour. Other times there seems to
be no obvious cause at all. A tension
headache or bad neck, lack of sleep or not
eating regularly is factors that can affect a
migraine if you’re susceptible.
Sufferers feel the need to rest and there are some
excellent medications available but sufferers can
become quite dependent over time and too much
medication makes the condition worse so you
may need professional help to get the balance
right.
What can help your migraine?
The consultant experts at the conference said
that codeine and paracetamol are not helpful for
migraine but if it suits you, aspirin and an over-
the-counter anti-sickness tablet is effective, if
taken very early when symptoms first show. Do
consult with your doctor or pharmacist before
trying new medications and you could also ask
your GP to refer to an expert headache clinic or
migraine specialist.
I’ve seen Emotional Freedom Technique help
someone who was actually in the throws of a
migraine to get full relief in 5 minutes. This
involves a sequence of tapping acupuncture
points, simple and painless and you can do it
yourself when symptoms come on. Acupuncture
is also helpful and is recommended by the NHS
for migraine. Homeopathy can be helpful too.
All these therapies help your body get back in
the best possible state of balance when life’s
stresses, injuries and the environment we live in
throw us off balance.

QR Codes - Hints & Tips You might have seen codes like this popping up everywhere with no explanation to the uninitiated as to what we are supposed to do with them!
So far this week, I have seen them in
advertising leaflets delivered through the
door, in the Evening Standard newspaper
and on an advertisement hung up in the local
shopping centre. So what are they?
QR Code is an abbreviation for “Quick
Response Code” and is the trademark for a
type of matrix barcode first designed for the
automotive industry. The code consists of
black modules (square dots) arranged in a
square pattern on a white background. The
information encoded can be a web site URL,
telephone number or business card
information.
To read the information in the QR Code, you
need to download and install a special
program called a “QR Code Reader” onto
your laptop (which also needs a web camera)
or an app onto your mobile phone. When
you run the program/app, you simply point
the camera at the QR Code, position the
image within an onscreen grid and it will
automatically guide you to the website URL.
Download a Laptop “QR Code Reader”
You will need to do a Google Search for a
QR Code reader - download it and then
install the program onto your laptop. Look
for the “Quickmark QR Reader” which is
free for personal use and can be used to read
QR codes or generate one for your own website
URL for advertising purposes.
Download a QR Code Reader for your iPhone, iPad or Android Phone
Do a Google Search on your phone or iPad for
“QR Code Reader App” and download the one
from Warrior (this one worked for me.) To use,
you simply run the App and point the camera at
the QR Code and
poition it inside the
on-screen grid - the
App will probably
“Beep” and then
load the relevant
website.
Try it out on the
codes on this page!
