Born in the Black Forest town of Calw, in Germany, Wuttenberg, on July 2, 1877. From a religious family who expected him to study theology.

HERMANN HESSE

His work focused on the duality of spirit and nature, body versus mind, and the individual’s spiritual search outside the restrictions of the society.

LIFE AS A POET AND NOVELIST

While on his visit to India in 1911, Hesse was highly influenced by the ancient Hindus and ancient Chinese cultures. In 1922, Hesse wrote Siddhartha, a novel based on Buddhism.

Hesse received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946. He later died of cerebral hemorrhage in his sleep on August 9, 1962 at the 85.
