PARCC: Ohio State Testing!

#NewPolicies!!!

Introducing The PROBLEM

PARCC, Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers testing, is a an assessment assigned by the state to test the common core knowledge of the students within that state. There are 12 states that volunteered to participate in taking the assessment, including Ohio. In all of these states PARCC is being required for all students.

About PARCC..

PARCC Stands for Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. We believe that PARCC testing

disrupts student learning. We do not believe it is beneficial for students and teachers and that it can

actually affect students negatively.

Identifying the Problem

● Assessment requires that the students take the test online and technology doesn’t always work

● All of these test are very time consuming and tiring ● The assessment doesn’t even affect our grades, therefore PARCC is a big

waste of time.● Teachers and students or missing out on educational time● Students are being well over worked ● Students do not have time for personal life

Common problems across the country

○ Parents■ Believe their children are put under

too much stress.■ Feeling that grades are being affected

more negatively than positively.

Disagreements about PARCC within the country.

● Students○ Feel there is not enough time for homework, extra curricular

activities, and life outside of school○ Stressed by over testing, pressure to do well, academic rigor.

● Teachers○ Students are missing class time to take all theses test that last one

to two hours per day.○ Getting behind on valuable lessons and learning○ Testing takes away from teaching students within the classroom

Disagreements about PARCC within the country

● Federal○ The Federal Government gives grant

to schools that take that test● Local○ The superintendent makes the

decision of participating in PARCC.

Why should the government be involved in the solution?

Turning The Problem Around

Community members should have a say in the participation of PARCC, or the right to vote on participating in PARCC

Advantages● Students might be more willing to take the test

Disadvantages● If you don’t participate in the PARCC, you won’t

be able to get certain grants from the federal government.

Alternative Public Policy # 1

The state of Ohio should return to standardized Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA’s).

Advantages

● It would take up less time in the school year.● Students won’t be as stressed out about taking these long tests.

Disadvantages

● School will not receive a grant from the Government

Alternative Public Policy # 2

● The Department of Education has advised districts that test are mandatory and if students refuse to take it, schools need to consult their discipline and attendance policies.

● A group of students from New York protested against PARCC.

Controversies and conflicts

Handling Conflict/Controversy #1

Convincing Supporters of PARCC1. Stating the facts2. providing evidence

Partaking in civil disobedience 1. Peacefully protesting2. Writing persuasive letters3. Start a petition4. Simply refuse to take the

test

A group of students in New York protested PARCC and refused to take the

assessment.

● These students were not punished for their refusal to take the test.

SOLUTION

Returning to OAA’s Alternative Public Policy

● It is supported by the constitution● Supported by Ohio’s Department of Education● Less Expensive● Students are more prepared● Students get a fair opportunity to succeed

Support The Policy

Advantages● More class time ● Receive grants for the assessments● More preparedDisadvantages● Decreased academic rigor on test● Paper-pencil test vs. Computer based

○ Eco-Friendly/Cost

Advantages and Disadvantages

● Individuals in Ohio have the responsibility to assist state and local government

● Individuals can address relevant or controversial problems that directly affect the communities

● The constitutional right of parents to “direct the upbringing and education of children.”
