3 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
To learn more about advertising in this book, please visit www.smesports.org.
Lancer Nation,The time has arrived for us to move sports indoors for the winter season. After another successful fall athletic season, all the teams are expecting to see significant gains in their program. Our swimming team is eager to return to the pool and go after an 8th consecutive Sunflower League title. These young men are not satisfied with their 5th-place showing at the State Meet and look to once again grab hold of the spotlight. The womens basket-ball team will once again be young; however these young ladies have learned a lot from their second year coach and look forward to being a factor in the league. The mens basketball team virtually returns the entire team from a year ago. These players were not satisfied with how they played last year and look to becoming a more complete team in all facets of the game. The mens and womens bowling are young and inexperienced but they
have the talent to make some noise and should not be counted out in any tournament. With a strong nucleus of returners these two teams are eager to compete with those who have won the accolades in the past. Finally, the wrestling team is coming off a 5th-place finish at the State Tournament. This group of wrestlers is by far the best SME wrestling team in the history of the school. Several state placers and a core of solid state qualifiers look to win it all in February.
We want to thank the Booster Club and all parents who have athletes involved in one or more of our programs. Your generosity (during difficult economic times) and overall support allows us to be competitive at a high level in the toughest conference in Kansas the Sun-flower League. More importantly, we know that students involved in athletics tend to do better academically than those students who are not involved. In 2010, we made huge strides in fan support and sportsmanship at all of our events. We want this philosophy to continue so we ask every-one to join with us in welcoming our guests to our school and to be respectful to the opposition when we are away.
I would like to personally invite you to any of our winter season activities. Our coaches and athletes work hard and they deserve the recogni-tion and support from their community. Come on out and have some fun. I guarantee there will be plenty of action!!
Karl R. Krawitz, Ed.D, Principal
Lancer Fans, On behalf of the coaches and student athletes at Shawnee Mission East High School, thank you for your continued and unwaver-ing support of our athletic programs. There is no doubt that this year will once again be a fantastic year for Lancer Athletics. The dedication of our coaches and student athletes and the enthusiasm and support of our student body and community is unmatched and should be commended. Going into my first year as athletic director at SME, I am truly humbled to be part of such a great program. The rich tradition of excellence that is Shawnee Mission East, both scholastically and athletically, is something of which we can all be proud.
We appreciate everyones continued support through your students participation in the athletic programs, as well as your member-ship in the All Sports Booster Club. If you are new to the school, the All Sports Booster Club is a great investment in the future of our students and school. The resources that they provide to the students of SME are very beneficial and helpful. Please learn more about this organization and how you can become a member by visiting www.smesports.org.
Again, I am excited to be part of this great school and to be able to work with all the students, coaches, and community members. I encourage you to show your Lancer Pride and support all our athletes by attending games and cheering on the teams in a positive way!

5Welcome to the 2011-2012 SME Winter Sports Booster Book
What is it?This book celebrates the athletes of SME. It is printed three times annually, once for each of the sport seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring. Advertising revenue from this project provides over 50% of the an-nual budget of the SME All-Sports Booster Club.
What is the All-Sports Booster Club?Rather than have booster clubs for every sport, in 1968 Athletic Director Dr. Art Newcomer formed the All-Sports Booster Club to support each and every team and the cheerleading program at SME. In 2007, the board voted to begin supplementing the budgets of the marching band and Lancer Dancers.
Where does the Booster Club money go?Grants are provided to each sport. Coaches spend this money on things such as equipment, teaching aides, uniforms, travel, continuing education, and professional memberships. In recent years, funds raised by the Booster Club were used to purchase exercise equipment for the weight room, a new video camera available for use by all sports teams, water chillers for the soccer and cross country teams, a new mat for the gymnastics team, tennis nets, a new pace clock for the pool, swim meet software and a laptop, a laptop for the golf team, a tractor implement for softball, a bleacher system and record boards for track & field, a power blaster for the football team, and funding for the summer speed coach. In the past, funds have been used to purchase the sports trophy case, the equipment garage on the practice field, and the banners that decorate the main gymnasium and the pool.
How can YOU be a part of the All-Sports Booster Club? There are two ways you can financially support Lancer athletics:
1. JOIN THE CLUB! The Booster Club sells memberships annually, starting in August. Members receive passes to get in FREE to all home sporting events!! Multiple sponsorship levels are available and you receive special recognition in this book!
2. BUY AN AD for your business or to express your support for the Lancers! Families and businesses can purchase advertisements in this Sports Booster Book which is widely distributed to the East community. The ads are available in a variety of sizes and prices and your ad is published in all three seasonal editions of the Sports Booster Book. When you buy an ad, you receive two FREE season passes to all home SME athletic events. Advertising opportunities are also available in game day programs and on the web site at www.smesports.org.
