What is Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD) ?

• It is highly effective, long acting, reversible family planning method.• It is a small device made of plastic and copper that is inserted in the

uterus.

• Women in the child bearing age group for spacing births.• Women who have had a caesarean section delivery.• Women who do not wish to undergo sterilisation but want an effective

long-term contraceptive method.• It can also be used as an emergency contraception, if inserted within

5 days of an unprotected sexual intercourse.

• Anytime during the menstrual cycle after reasonably excluding pregnancy.

• Immediately or within 48 hours of delivery (PPIUCD).• Six weeks after delivery.• Immediately after

MTP, spontaneous abortion (if there is no evidence of infection). ?

What are the advantages of IUCD ?

• It provides highly effective, long-term (10 years by Cu IUCD 380 A and 5 years by Cu IUCD 375) and reversible protection against pregnancy.

• Does not require daily attention from the user or special attention before or during sexual intercourse.

• Is effective immediately after insertion.• Can be used by lactating women.• Once removed, there is immediate return to fertility.• It does not have hormonal side-effects or does not interact with any

medicines that may be taken.• An effective long-term contraceptive

method for couples who do not wish to undergo sterilisation.

What are the advantages of IUCD ?

Are there any side-effects of IUCD use?

• One may experience spotting or bleeding immediately after insertion. This is not menstrual bleeding. One can perform all household chores.

• There may be abdominal discomfort or cramps for a few days, after IUCD insertion.

• There may be increase in the duration/amount of menstrual bleeding or spotting in between for the first few menstrual cycles.

Follow- up• The client is required to make a follow up visit to health facility after

1st menstruation / 4 weeks following IUCD insertion.

What are the common misconseptions about IUCD?

There are some common misconseptions associated with use of IUCD which are baseless and FALSE, like-

• IUCD causes weight gain.• IUCD causes infertility. • IUCD can leave the uterus and travel to distant parts of the body.• IUCD cannot be used by women who have had a caesarean section.• IUCD increases risk of infection. • IUCD causes discomfort during sexual intercourse for both the woman

and her husband.• IUCD increases the risk of pregnancy outside

uterus (Ectopic pregnancy).• IUCD may cause cancer.• IUCD may cause birth defects in the next baby.

What are the common misconseptions about IUCD?

• Yes, It can be used as an emergency contraceptive.• It should be inserted within 5 days of any unprotected sexual

intercourse.• It is effective even in situation of multiple episodes of unprotected

sexual intercourse.• Same IUCD can then be continued as a regular contraceptive.

What is Emergency ContraceptivePill (ECP) ?

• Emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) is a method, that helps women to prevent unwanted pregnancy resulting from unprotected sexual intercourse.

• ECP is a hormonal pill and must be used within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sexual intercourse.

When can ECP be used ?

• ECP should be used ONLY in emergency situations.• ECP should be used in case of likely contraception failure- - Bursting or slippage of condom. - Missing of 2 or more OCPs. - Failure to withdraw penis from vagina before ejeculation. - Miscalculation of the fertile period.• It can be used in the case of forced sex or rape.

• Depending on when one uses ECP during menstrual cycle, the pills will either stop the release of an egg, prevent fertilization of an egg, or prevent transportation of the sperm.

How is ECP used?

• ECP must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse, as soon as posible.

• After taking ECP, if menstruation gets delayed by more than one week from the expected date, go for a medical opinion/pregnancy test.

Dosage of ECP: Single dose of 1.5 mg of Levonorgestrol to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

• ECP taken within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse is 85% effective, if taken correctly.

• ECP is more effective if taken within 12 to 24 hours of unprotected intercourse.

• Any delay in taking the pills decreases the efficacy of ECP.

Does ECP cause any side-effects?

• ECP may cause temporary side-effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, fatigue, and breast tenderness.

• These side-effects generally do not last for more than 24 hours.• In case of vomiting within two hours of consuming ECP, consult service

provider immediately.

• No, it does not cause abortion.• ECP is not effective once the fertilized egg is attached to the uterus.

How can one return to regular Family Planning method after using ECP?

• Condom can be used immediately after using ECP.• OCP users should start a new packet of OCP from the beginning of

the first day of next menstrual period. Meanwhile, they should use condoms for the rest of this menstrual cycle.

• If next menstruation is delayed by more than one week from regular expected date of menstruation, woman should contact the health care provider/take a pregnancy test for excluding pregnancy.

How can one return to regular Family Planning method after using ECP?

Remember!• ECP is NOT a regular family planning method. It is only for emergency

situations.• It gives women a chance to prevent an unwanted pregnancy from

unprotected intercourse.• ECP should be used within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse,

the sooner the better.• ECP does not cause abortion.• ECP does not necessarily bring on menses immediately, most women

will have menstrual bleeding on time or slightly early or 2-3 days later than the expected date.

• Repeated use of EC pills decrease the effectiveness of the pill, increases side-effects as the amount of hormones consumed would be much higher than the regular oral hormonal pills.

• Hence, ECPs are not a substitute for regular contraception.
