Financial Aid (merit scholarships) & your family funding plan
Types of Merit Scholarships
Application processes & getting in the best position to get $
Resources available
Complete some tasks
Receive assistance
But first….let’s see about those stress levels!
Stress and Heightened Visual Perception Experiment
A 2001 study conducted in France
found a strong correlation between
high levels of stress and visual acuity.
One of the most in-depth studies found that
stress heightened test subject’s visual perception.
A direct correlation was found when comparing the
amount of stress the subject reported and
differences he or she saw in the images.
This was not what the researchers expected.
Your Turn
You now will participate in the experiment.
I will read a statement that may or may not evoke a stress response.
After hearing the statement, close your eyes and think about that statement as it applies to you.
When instructed, open your eyes and look at the image on the screen. You will see several animals jumping a fence.
You will then indicate whether you note NO DIFFERENCES, SOME differences, MANY differences in the types of animals.
The more differences you note, the higher the amount of stress the statement evoked.
Section #1 -- Question #1How Stressed Are You?
Not much Some from time to time More than I think I should be I NEED HELP!
Section #1 -- Question #2What’s the PLAN as you know it?
Enlisting in the military
Doing some combination of military and school (ROTC, guard, reserves)
Going to work
Going to work for a while then think about school
Going to a less than two-year trade or technical program
Finding an apprenticeship and working toward journeyman’s license
Going to a two-year college and stop at a certificate or associates’ degree
Going to a two-year college and transfer to a four-year college
Going to a four-year college and stop at a bachelors’ degree
Going on and obtain a masters’ or doctoral degree
Living at home, no job, play video games, figure it out some day
Read #3 and stand next to the sign that
represents where you are (or think your
senior is).
Section #1 -- Question #3How certain are you?
Actions Inaction/NeedExactly Excited, will do the
work quickly, follow through OR talks a good talk with no action.
Reluctant to look at other options, may not have a back up in case something falls through; needs encouragement to check all options or follow through with plans.
Mostly Confident, nervous, open to many options, spits & spurts
to spur on, may have too many optionsMay need more information or to talk outloud
Not so much
Spends time thinking/dreaming, asks questions, talks to others, waits for “a sign”
may avoid talking if stressed, may wait too long and miss deadlinesMay need more information or have too much. Need to eliminate the obvious Nos; if no action…that means something
No idea May be weighing options and remaining open, internal thought process -- stuck
Won’t act, may miss deadlines, needs to experience options in order to process
Section #1 -- Question #4What Will Help Us in the Decision-
Making Process?
Researching (reading, internet, etc.) Talking out loud to someone about my ideas Experiencing (visits, job shadows) Keeping my options open Not taking in too much information Writing out my plans
Section #1 -- Question #5What are the Obstacles We Face?
Having discussions about finances Disappointing family members Making a decision (freezing) Change Leaving friends or letting friends choose Balancing & prioritizing Making the RIGHT decision EVERYTHING and/or nothing
Section #2The Game Has Changed…
More kids going to school (2-year and 4-year) Fewer kids finishing college (less than 40%) Less than that end up a career that fits the degree
(25%) More kids getting out after 1-2 years…owing a lot of
money and not having a high enough salary to pay the debt
Dramatic increase in the number of students defaulting on school loans
School loans are not forgivable, even in bankruptcy
Section #2College is a MEANS to an END
When looking at colleges, gone are the days of “the experience”
Focus should be “bang for your buck”Frank discussions at home about
finances and realityMarketable skills -- pay attention to
the world of work and economy In the end…you’ve got to find a job
Section #2So…what does that mean?
Finding the MATCH is more important than everAcademic matchCareer matchFinancial matchSocial match
Knowing the difference between good and bad debtTotal loan amount should be LESS than 30%
of what he/she can expect to make his/her first year out of college
Let’s Try
Potential income for a first-year teacher =
$35,000 30% of $35,000 =
$10,500 Now your career…(if you don’t know put
a “?” and check on Kansas Career Pipeline)
What is the CURRENT Family Plan for Paying for Higher Education?
_____% Student job/savings
_____% Parents income/savings
_____% Other family
_____% Merit scholarships (getting ready to discuss)
_____% Need-based scholarships (getting ready to discuss)
_____% Loans
= 100% total cost
Need-Based Scholarships
FINANCIAL AID
MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS
Need is determined by information you provide on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) using 2014 income tax information. Most communication will be with the financial aid department at the prospective college.
To specifically address this topic, we will have a meeting in January.
Need-Based Scholarships
Awarded to students who excel in academics, athletics, performance and other skills.
Used to attract “the best and brightest”.
Learning to “package” yourself and match your interests and abilities to the institution is key.
