Fifth Grade 2017-2018

Objective

The fifth grade environment is one that is geared towards helping the students take an increasing responsibility for their own learning which in turn will help them become life-long learners.

Literacy/Language

WONDERS Reading Program • Award-winning literature • Content-Area Links extend into science and social

studies • Focus on different genres, reading comprehension,

craft and structure of text, fluency • Writing to compare texts is integrated throughout

program. • Various writing tasks and key components are

embedded into the program. • Spelling and vocabulary are assessed at the end of

each unit.

Go Math! Students will have online accounts to access: •Ebook editions for students •Math games and practice •Personal Math Trainer is used both in class and may be assigned for HW •These are all accessed through ThinkCentral

Expectations

• Homework – Homework will reinforce skill areas covered in class. It is always due the next day for class unless otherwise specified by the teacher.

• Absentees: If your student is absent from school,

they are allowed a certain amount of days to make up the work according to how many days of school he/she has missed (See Student Handbook). If the workload is too large, contact your child’s teacher to make accommodations.

Expectations Continued… Students have a “Student Planner” to keep track

of their assignments. Homework is written on the homework board in each classroom daily. Use this planner as a communication tool between home and school.

Assessment

• Students’ assessment will be based on

classroom work, homework, quizzes,

tests, written and oral assignments,

and class participation.

MCAS 2.0 Schedule

• English/Language Arts testing is scheduled for April 10-12

• Math is scheduled for May 8-9

• Science is scheduled for May 15-16

Field Trips and Classroom Volunteers

• A letter with more information will be sent prior to the field trip.

• Chaperones and Classroom Volunteers need to be C.O.R.I.E.D in order to attend a class trip or work in the school building.
